Part of the Texas Historical Commission's Fort Griffin State Historic Site, this established campground sits along the Brazos River where visitors can walk through remnants of the 1867 frontier fort. The site preserves the history of buffalo soldiers, cattle drives, and frontier figures like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Campers have access to both hookup and primitive sites within the protected area.
Reviews consistently highlight the campground's quiet atmosphere and dark skies. "Wonderful place to see the stars at night," notes Brad V., who also mentions clean bathroom facilities. The Brazos River provides a natural backdrop, and multiple visitors return specifically for the peaceful setting away from urban noise.
The campground operates under a reservation system and welcomes pets. Historical interpretation trails wind through the fort ruins and down to the river. Campers can explore the visitor center exhibits detailing the area's role in Texas frontier history. The site sits roughly three hours from Dallas, making it accessible for weekend trips.
For those wanting additional amenities, nearby options include campgrounds near Albany about 14 miles south, including ALBANY INN & RV CAMPGROUND for full-service RV camping.
