Within Fort Griffin State Historic Site, this campground sits along the Brazos River and provides access to one of Texas's most significant frontier locations. The Texas Historical Commission manages this all-season facility where campers can walk among the ruins of the 1867 fort that once housed legendary figures like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections.
The campground maintains a reputation for quietness that multiple visitors appreciate. Clean restroom facilities serve the camping area, and the riverside location offers stargazing opportunities after dark. "Wonderful place to see the stars at night," notes Brad V., who has returned multiple times. The historic fort ruins provide walking paths and interpretive opportunities for history enthusiasts.
Sites cost $12-20 per night and include picnic tables, with ADA-accessible options available. A dump station serves RV campers, and pets are welcome throughout the campground. Reservations can be made in advance. For those exploring the broader region, campgrounds around Albany provide additional options about 14 miles south. The combination of riverside camping and frontier history creates a distinctive overnight experience in this part of central Texas.
