What to do
Fishing at Watauga Lake: At Cardens Bluff Campground, visitors have direct water access for fishing. "I love this campground. They have a nice bathhouse and plenty of great sites right on the water. The camp hosts are helpful. It can get a little crowded in the summer months, but it's a great place!" notes Lauren M.
Hiking trails close to camp: Trails begin directly within some camping areas around Piney Flats. "The campground is well organized with many amenities including super easy access to the water on all sides and surprisingly clean bathrooms. After the boat noise dies down the lake is extremely peaceful and placid," shares Nathan F. about Little Oak Campground.
Mountain biking on dedicated trails: Warriors' Path State Park Main Campground houses dedicated mountain biking trails. One visitor notes, "This amazing campground has spots for tent and rv camping, hiking trails, a beautiful lake for kayaking and fishing, and a Marina where rentals are available! Park also has a Boundless Playground!"
Disc golf courses: The area offers disc golf opportunities for campers looking for alternative recreation. "My son and I enjoyed a round of disk golf while my wife and daughters made use of their awesome playground. We only did one hike, however, there are multiple trails to make use of in the park," reports Jedidiah J.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Little Oak Campground offers spacious, separated camping spots. "Very kid-friendly super spacious campsites every site is right on the lake with amazing sunsets every night. Only wish they had electricity," says Tiffany G.
Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the area maintain well-kept facilities. "The bath houses were clean. All sites are primitive," notes Hank M. about his stay at Little Oak Campground, reflecting a common appreciation across the region's campgrounds.
Lake proximity: Direct water access ranks high among camper preferences. "The campground sites are a bit close together but it is well maintained and has friendly staff. Wifi works well. Nice dog park," shares Doreen M. about Lakeview RV Resort.
Natural sounds: The region's creeks and water features provide natural white noise. "We parked with van doors opened to the bubbling creek and had the natural white noise as a backdrop all night. Very few bugs with cooler temps," mentions an N.P. at Camp Stonefly.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Mobile connectivity varies significantly across camping areas. "Camp host were super nice and the price was wonderful. There weren't as many bathrooms as I would have liked due to most being worked on. There is really good cell service on the camp site," notes Bailey R. about Cardens Bluff.
Uneven terrain at some sites: Roan Mountain State Park Campground and other area campgrounds may have challenging elevation changes. "Really nice facility near town. There are a lot of uneven campsites, so bring your leveling blocks. That said, great campground," advises Michelle I.
Bathroom limitations: Some campgrounds have minimal bathroom facilities or maintenance issues. "The only thing keeping me from giving this park a 5* review was the bath houses. While they are most definitely adequate there were few out of order making it difficult to get in to shower," shares Jedidiah J.
Site size restrictions: Many campgrounds have strict limitations on vehicle size. "Pay attention to the site size as some RVs had issues getting their larger RVs in their sites with the road/site layout," cautions Jennifer H. at Warriors' Path State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Camp Stonefly offers family-friendly amenities. "Very fun and kid friendly with play ground," shares Britt, highlighting facilities specifically designed for younger campers.
Educational opportunities: Ranger programs provide learning experiences for children. "In the warm seasons they have a ranger that comes around and even little events for kids. I remember picking apart an owl pellet with the ranger. Very outdoor educational," recalls Travis R.
Group camping areas: Some campgrounds accommodate larger family gatherings. "I tent camped with a group here and the sites are very rugged and pretty far from water/bathrooms but there is a pool and the staff is very friendly and helpful," explains Erin R. about Bristol-Kingsport KOA.
Swimming access: Lakes and creeks provide natural swimming opportunities. "Swim at sunset when the boats go quiet. Spacious sites; peaceful campground; clean showers," recommends Van M. about Little Oak Campground.
Tips from RVers
Leveling requirements: Bristol-Kingsport KOA and similar campgrounds may require additional equipment. "Kingsport/Bristol has easy access from Interstate 81 and the campground is easily navigated with a large 5th wheel. They have several large pull through sites, as well as back in smaller sites. They have 50amp service and full hookup sites," explains Laura H.
Site size limitations: RV campers should verify their vehicle fits designated spaces. "Our site was perfect for our 23 ft RV but pay attention to the site size as some RVs had issues getting their larger RVs in their sites with the road/site layout," warns Jennifer H.
Hookup availability: Water and electric access varies by location and site. "The only issues we had were several of the sites were too small for even our pop up camper, no way an RV can fit. You really need to scout the sites beforehand," advises Kate S.
Pull-through options: Some campgrounds offer easier access sites for larger vehicles. "Note: My 5th wheel is 43' and I got it in to one of their 40' sites," shares Travis R. about Warriors' Path State Park Main Campground.
