Primitive camping areas at Aiken State Park provide more secluded options for campers with dogs, requiring a half-mile hike to reach spacious sites near the water. The trails throughout both parks are well-maintained and suitable for dog walking, though summer heat requires morning or evening exercise times. No designated off-leash areas exist in the state parks, requiring pets to remain on leash at all times. The campground hosts at Barnwell are known for being friendly and helpful with local information, including directions to the nearest veterinary services in Blackville or Barnwell. Crunchy Acres, a small 19-acre family farm with only three camping sites, offers a unique option where pets can interact with farm animals including chickens, goats, and rabbits. Sites in both state parks fill quickly during weekends, making reservations essential for pet owners planning weekend trips.

      Outside Inn Campground

Great Family Trip Especially for the kiddos!!

This was our second visit to Outside Inn Campground and both times we stayed in the camper they offer as a rental. It’s the first thing you basically see when pull into the campground and when we come back next time that’s where we want to stay again. It’s perfect for a family with multiple kids and for us we had 3 adults and 3 kids and we couldn’t have been more comfortable. The owners Chris and Clair are just the best. They are so accommodating and always there if you need anything. The kids really enjoy the animals and activities they provide, especially feeding the goats when they were babies. The facilities are in exceptional condition and especially if you may have forgotten something“fire wood for us” they have that available to you as well. We can’t wait for our next trip back and are really looking forward to seeing the new changes the have in progress like the Glamping Tents and pond. Overall this was one of our best experiences as a family camping in South Carolina. Thank you again Clair for being present and patient with Avery and Albie while they were around the animals! We look forward to seeing y’all again soon!

      Colleton State Park Campground

Really well-kept quiet little state park

This one one of the cutest, most well-maintained State Park Campgrounds we’ve been to. The groundskeeper Larry is the nicest man and was so welcoming from booking to departure. You can tell he takes pride in caring for his site. There’s a nice big field for the dogs to play in and we were able to rent kayaks from the outfitter across the creek to explore the Edisto River. There’s a good burger place 3 miles down the road (Lee’s) too. The cell and WiFi worked great for full time remote work and locationally Colleton is about 1 hour between Charleston, Savannah, and Congaree National Park. I think this is also the smallest state park in South Carolina.

      Heritage RV Park

Great place for an over night stay.

This is a very well-kept campground. There is no bath house or laundry on premises but there is a very nice dog park. It is mostly gravel with one or two streets being sand and all the sites are back in except one which we thought we were going to get but I guess someone called before we did and got it. Our site was level and we were able to set up quickly with the help of Mike the office manager. There is nothing for kids to do here so be advised the gravel becomes a toy! It was great for a night stay. Right off the interstate with lots of stores nearby including Walmart and Camping world.

      Back to Nature Garden Center

Check out a potential spot for visiting relatives

I live in Augusta but looked over the campsite for possible guests. The close proximity to our home and grocery shopping is a plus. The combination of a garden center and petting zoo was a real plus for small great grand kids.  I'm going to recommend this as an option for visiting relatives.

Made in the Shade RV Park and Campground

Waynesboro, GA….Just ok. Probably wouldn’t make an effort to come back.

Campground was easy to find. It went south once we entered the campground. There is no signage to tell you anything. The manager who was very sweet had told me she would send me information but I didn’t receive anything. She got confused on the dates and was very apologetic. We drove all over the area looking for the office. There was a trailer that had a shower in one end and laundry in the other and a door marked private which “May” have been the office but we’ll never know. We have a 42’ 5th wheel and dragging this thing behind us around the campground was quite the adventure. Nobody seemed to know where the office was….we ended up at a dead end that was like a culdesac and someone parked their SUV on the curve instead of in their drive and it took us a while to spin the monster around. We could have sold tickets as we had an audience. Dinner and a movie I guess!! Finally got headed in the right direction and a guy in a pick up stopped and took us to his leader. We used actually 2 sites to park. It was full service, pretty quiet, lots of full time people. Not much grass, mostly sand and tree roots where we were parked. Nice sized dog park. Internet was poor. They have 2 different Wi-Fi’s to use neither of them were good. Our hotspot didn’t work well either- seems to be a dead area. I have AT&T cell service and had service at the camper but not while trolling through the park so I could call the office of course.

    Guide to Barnwell

Barnwell County sits in South Carolina's western coastal plain region, characterized by low-lying sandy soil and dense pine forests. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from June through August, while winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing. Campgrounds near Barnwell typically offer sites with sandy pads rather than gravel, making them particularly suitable for tent camping.

    What to Do

Kayaking on the Edisto River: Access the river at Aiken State Park Campground for flat-water paddling adventures. "We enjoyed the trails, and they were nice and easy to get through and just long enough to feel like you got a bit of hiking in. They offer rentals for John boats, paddle boats, and kayaks for a very reasonable cost," notes Bethany E. from Barnwell State Park Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Both state and private parks provide stocked fishing areas. "There are at least 8 geocaches, a self-led park BINGO, a swimming beach, paddleboat rentals, fishing ponds stocked with catfish, and a tackle loaner program," reports Courtney B. at Barnwell State Park Campground.

Nature observation: View wildlife in natural settings. "We got there early and were able to go right to our site. Less than 30 minutes to downtown Aiken. We loved the town and it was very pet friendly. Hopelands Gardens was beautiful, free and pet friendly," mentions Cathy C. from Aiken State Park Campground.

    What Campers Like

Sandy campsites: Unlike typical gravel pads, most sites feature sand-based surfaces. "The pad is mostly sand over clay, rather than gravel, which was great with the tent. The sites have power and water. Lots of trees, so it's perfect if you have hammocks," writes Bethany E. about Barnwell State Park.

Quiet evening atmosphere: Many campgrounds enforce strict quiet hours. "Aiken county state park is remarkably well kept and has a person that stays on site that is super friendly and will help you with anything that you need," notes Megan H. from Aiken State Park Campground.

Farm experiences: Unique camping options include farms with animal encounters. "This 19 acre family farm with only three camping sites offers a unique option where pets can interact with farm animals including chickens, goats, and rabbits," according to Ashley F. from Crunchy Acres.

    What You Should Know

Weather considerations: Summer heat demands preparation. "We tent camped in site #1, and the park was full this weekend. There are only 25 spots here, so it fills regularly. Our site was mostly level," reports Jay B. from Barnwell State Park Campground.

Site selection importance: Not all sites accommodate larger RVs. "I'll put my gripe first and get it out of the way. Site 16 was awful to get into. Two trees are only about 10 feet apart and once you clear those you have to jackknife and nearly scrape your tow vehicle on a tree," warns Jil S. from Barnwell State Park Campground.

Limited office hours: Plan ahead for check-in. "Note that the park office is only open from 11a-noon and 4-5p. The rangers are super-friendly," advises Courtney B. about Barnwell State Park.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Budget-friendly activities: State parks offer structured family programs. "We participated in a hike with the park manager where she told us about the animals in the park and even let us feel grey fox and beaver pelts. We saw vultures and an armadillo. That finished with hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows!" shares Sarah F. from Magnolia Springs State Park Campground.

Dog-friendly hiking options: Many trails accommodate pets with proper planning. "Really clean camp sites, they offer primitive camping without any amenities these camp sites are more secluded and peaceful in my opinion its also near a large fishing pond and creek," notes Jessica K. at Aiken State Park.

Playground access: Several parks feature play equipment for children. "In the center of the campground there is a small playground. The kids didn't end on it too much, but it was a nice addition. There is also some permanent (concrete) cornhole setup, but you'll need your own bean bags," advises Sarah F. from Magnolia Springs.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup options: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Barnwell provide full service sites. "Great campground with excellent staff. Laundry is clean. Small pond. Level lots and close to shopping and highways," reports Steven H. from Barnyard RV Park.

Site leveling challenges: Come prepared with leveling blocks. "Dirt sites: lots of water flowing through during rainy weather. Water, electric and sewer at sites. Large pull through sites. Easy access to bathrooms and showers. Friendly staff at front office," advises Dallas W. about Barnyard RV Park.

Bathroom access: Facilities vary significantly between parks. "This Campground is well maintained with level pull through sites. No frills like a pool but it's easy access. Congaree National Park Fort Jackson are nearby. Columbia is a neighboring city," mentions Scott M. from Barnyard RV Park.
