RV Village Camping Resort in Mercer provides 50-amp service on sites open from April through October. Mountain Top Campground features electric and water hookups with gravel pads that accommodate larger rigs. "The sites are pretty spread out and spacious, so you have pretty decent privacy," noted one visitor about Mountain Top, though the campground currently lacks full sewer hookups at individual sites, offering a dump station and weekly pump-out service instead. Raccoon Creek State Park Campground provides electric sites with 30-amp and 50-amp options, though reviews indicate many sites are not level.

Seasonal availability varies significantly across the region's RV parks. Most campgrounds operate from April through October, while a few like Pine Cove Beach Club remain open year-round. Cell service fluctuates between locations, with Mountain Top Campground offering full Verizon LTE coverage. Navigation to some parks requires attention to specific routes, as one camper noted about Tomlinson Run State Park: "Don't pass the drive coming in. We had to drive few miles to get looped back." Dump stations are available at most parks, though their locations vary—Crooked Creek Lake's dump station is located "out the exit by ranger building" according to a review. Pet policies generally allow leashed dogs, and many parks provide amenities like swimming pools, playgrounds, and camp stores selling firewood and basic supplies.

      Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

      Nice little State Park

Tomlinson Run is a small state park situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia nestled between eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Plenty of things to do there including but not limited to…. Mini golf, hiking trails, biking, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, parks for the kids, and of course the camping. The campsites here are mainly gravel pads with the exception being the asphalt handicapped spots (2). Most spots are 30 amp with a few 50 amp (new for 2021). The park also has a few primitive spots available and some yurts and cabins to rent. I have a 38’ fifth wheel and the spots are tight for it (even the couple pull thru). Campground facilities are clean but dated. They state new facilities are coming soon. The campground is at the top of a hill and the spots are wooded and shaded. I would consider the camping to be spaced generously (room to stretch out). They have a small camp store and information available. A breakfast is available during peak season for a small fee. They do have water and a dump station available (free for campers to use).

      Bear Run Campground

      Loads to do...!

This campground is deceptively big! The nightly RV sites are close to the park entrance and are relatively flat. The campground hosts themed events, game nights and arts& crafts. There is a swimming pool and playground for the kids. It also has a small café that sells baked goods and coffee. On Saturdays they sell amazing Armish Donuts!

Further into the campground the sites turn to more permanent sites. Further up the hill are more cottages and camping. This campground is steep in parts and too large to walk efficiently. There is a fenced dog run area and a beautiful lake. All sites have fire rings. There is an onsite laundry, WIFI, onsite dump station and propane refill station.

You can also buy ice and firewood. The campground is gated. Lots to do at the campground and lots to do in the surrounding area. They welcome all furry friends!

      Atwood Lake Park Campground

      Incredible!

The Atwood Lake Campground is a true gem in a beautiful area of eastern Ohio! We’ve visited the Atwood region many times in the past but have never camped - but after this visit we’ll be back for sure. The campground is relatively new, with the campground area being completely revamped beginning in 2017. There are two overnight camping areas with seasonal sites in a separate section; we stayed in “Camp H” which is the newest area. There is a huge bathhouse with two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and shower facilities along with a very nice laundry area. Adjoining the bathhouse area is a beautiful pavilion and children’s playground - all of which overlooks Atwood Lake. The campsites are nicely spaced though if you’re in the inner loop as we were or even some of the outer ring sites you’ll be looking right into your neighbor’s site. All sites are FHU on level concrete pads and include a metal picnic table and fire ring. If needed there are two very well equipped dump stations if you prefer to use them instead of the sewer connection at your site. Many sites are on cul de sacs directly on the lake with docks and fishing areas adjacent to the campsites. Lots of hiking trails, paved bike paths, a swimming beach and restaurant are in a nearby area. We loved the campground and will return soon!

      Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

      Raccoon Creek Camping

This is a large state park offering electric only sites

The sites are set amounts the forest and there are several loops to choose from. Loop F is pet friendly. All sites are within walking distance to amenities

Amenities are quite run down but functional

Wildlife is beautiful and its a short ~10min drive to the beach area of Raccoon Creek lake.

Two (2) dump station spots and fresh water taps location throughout the park

NOTE: Many sites are not level, you will require blocks/timber to level out campers. Tent campers should choose their site using the photos on the state park site.

All sites have a paved car space.

      Mercer-Grove City KOA

      Really nice!

Very well maintained campground with lots of amenities, esp for kids (pool, playground). Generous sized sites, not too close together. Looks like quite a few long-term RVers here. Cute chickens wandering around. Hiking trail accessible from the campsite. Heavily wooded and quiet, but not too far off interstate.

      Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

      Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

Beautiful campground, choose your site wisely

When we arrived, we checked in at the camp office. The ladies there were very kind. The roads through the campground are wide enough for two-way traffic and nicely paved.

This is a beautiful, heavily treed campground. Even on Memorial Day weekend with lots of people, the park was very peaceful. The sounds of birds permeate the air round the clock. Chipmunks run amok. They’re just so cute.

We booked site 56 for our 39’ fifth wheel. As soon as we pulled up, we knew there was no way we’d fit even though the reservation site said it would accommodate a 40’ rig. The camp hosts happened to be passing by as we were surveying the site. They were very helpful redirecting us to a nearby site that would be more suitable. FYI, sites 55 and 56 have deep culverts on either side. One wrong turn and you’re going to have a problem. The majority of sites along our road were just wide enough to keep the tires out of the dirt, but not wide enough for the stairs to land on asphalt. If you have a motorhome or other wide-bodied rig, like an Alliance Paradigm, I would recommend choosing one of the sites on the loop around the playground. Those are better suited for newer big rigs.

TIP…the line at the dump station is long on the holiday weekends. Plan accordingly.

      West Branch State Park Campground

      Love the Lake!

This state park has a lot to offer with the highlight being a large 2,650-lake that appeals to fishermen, boaters, and swimmers. The park is over 5,000 acres and not only has camping but hiking, volleyball, fishing, playgrounds, picnicking, hunting, horseback riding, and more.

The campground is divided into three loops with nearly 200 sites. Campsites include those with full hook-up (50 amp), electric only (50 amp), and some with no electric. This campground is suitable for everything from large RVs to tents. Sites and roads are paved and each site has a picnic table and fire pit. In loops where there is no water directly at the site, water spigots are scattered throughout. The restroom/bathhouses in our loop were really nice, modern, clean, and had laundry facilities which is a real plus at a state park campground. Campsites can be reserved online up to six months in advance. Since we were here in April, the campground was practically empty and getting a site was no problem. But, if you want one of the 29 full hook-up sites in the summer, you better book early.

We really enjoyed the hiking trails and being able to leave our campsite and be right on the trails. There are approximately 12 miles of hiking trails and an additional 20 miles that are open to horses and snowmobiles. (Be aware that hunting is permitted in certain areas.)

The park is about 15 miles from Cuyahoga Valley National Park which is a fantastic place to explore with a lot going on for the whole family! If you are interested in football, the National Football Hall of Fame is just down the road in Canton. The town of Hudson has a pretty, historic downtown with a fun old soda fountain.

We would definitely stay at this campground again. It was a perfect place to stay while visiting family in the nearby town of Hudson. Loved having a paved site with full hook-ups especially since there was a lot of rain while we were there. The lake was perfect for kayaking and had we been able to stay longer we would have spent more time on the water.

    Guide to Dawson

Camping options near Dawson, Pennsylvania span across western Pennsylvania and into eastern Ohio, with most locations situated within forested hills at elevations between 900-1,300 feet. Terrain in this region features a mix of rolling countryside, river valleys, and wooded hillsides that create secluded camping opportunities. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing, with summer highs typically reaching 80-85°F.

    What to do

Swimming in natural settings: At Austin Lake RV Park & Cabins, the lake features multiple water recreation options. "Kayaking, inflatables, beach, but almost anything you want to do will cost you an additional charge," notes one camper. The park's inflatable water slides provide entertainment for families during summer months.

Fishing opportunities: Raccoon Creek State Park offers fishing access to its 101-acre lake. One visitor noted, "It's close to home plus it is a great place to take the dog out to swim and chase geese and ducks. A great little beach area to lay out and enjoy the sun." The park maintains the lake for multiple fish species including bass, bluegill, and catfish.

Hiking trail systems: Multiple trail networks exist throughout the region's campgrounds. At Tomlinson Run State Park Campground, "lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream. Hiking poles are recommended especially if it rains."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Several campgrounds feature spacious sites that provide separation between camping units. At Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground, "Level gravel sites with really great grassy areas. We stayed memorial weekend and it was quiet by 9 every night. They do a great job keeping the park looking beautiful."

Campground hospitality: Staff assistance varies between facilities. As one visitor to Chestnut Ridge noted, "When I first got here the 2 owners went above and beyond in so many ways. Unfortunately they didn't have a 50 amp site available so the owner gave me 30 amp converter at no cost and also helped me hook up my gray water and black water connections."

Event calendars: Many campgrounds maintain scheduled activities throughout the camping season. At Bear Run Campground, "Every weekend there are activities, there is a heated pool and Friday night Bingo. A great place with even better people! The restrooms are clean and the general store carries most things you would need."

    What you should know

Bathroom conditions: Facilities vary significantly between parks. Some visitors to RV Resort Village reported, "The bathrooms are also filthy and on the weekends kids run in and out of them to play...I also tried their second set of bathrooms, but it was filled with wasps." Always check recent reviews for current conditions.

Campsite leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven sites at several area campgrounds. At Tomlinson Run State Park Campground, "most of the camp sites have electricity, but most aren't level. It's the kind of place that has some really great sits and some not so great."

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts camping experiences in this region. A visitor to Raccoon Creek State Park mentioned they "Got out for a couple hours hiking in the snow. It was great. Just what we needed to stretch the legs and enjoy some family time. We did the Palomino Loop. It also was quite interesting getting to the trail. Some nice snow covered back roads."

    Tips for camping with families

Pool access: Most rv campgrounds in Dawson, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas feature swimming options for children. At Austin Lake, one camper mentioned "Great camp ground! Lake and scenery was beautiful! Very clean and friendly help! Very kid oriented!"

Playground availability: Family-friendly campgrounds provide dedicated play areas. "This campground is deceptively big! The nightly RV sites are close to the park entrance and are relatively flat. The campground hosts themed events, game nights and arts & crafts. There is a swimming pool and playground for the kids," notes a Bear Run visitor.

First-time camping: Valley View Campground offers a relaxed environment for new campers. A visitor shared, "Was a relaxing 4 days at a tent site. Would absolutely recommend this campground!" This makes it suitable for families testing camping for the first time.

    Tips from RVers

Navigation challenges: Access to some rv parks near Dawson, Pennsylvania requires careful route planning. At Austin Lake, "Be advised it will seem a little sketchy getting in. The road dead-ends into the campground and it is all downhill getting there. Take your time and all will be just fine. Our rig is 39' & 16K. 4wd low helps, not cause you need 4wd just for the lower gears."

Site selection for larger units: At Chestnut Ridge, "It does not feel crowded, sites were grassy and all utilities worked well. Owners are very nice people and are working to continually improve this property they just acquired a couple years ago. The park is largely seasonal but has several spots for drop-in RVs and tents. Big rig accessible."

Off-season considerations: Some campgrounds remain accessible outside peak season. Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort received praise from one visitor who noted it's "close to the highway but no road noise. Giant pool opened in the summer." The resort remains open year-round, unlike most campgrounds in the region.
