    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    Family fun!

Nice clean and quiet campground. The address online took us to the ranger station. Turn left BEFORE bridge. Couldn’t see sign from the road. The section we were in was “no pets allowed”. My kids loved the beach, swimming was not deep. Beach was big with adjacent playground. Lots of pavilions all over. The area was a little crowded for my liking.

    Pioneer Campground

    Don't rent Cabin 1

Looks cute from the outside but once you get in you are immediately disappointed. The cabin had a smell, a wrinkly floor, and was very dark. There is a lack of any shelf or cabinets and only minimal hooks to put your things. Even the TV was on the dining table and you can't use the remote from the bed either. We used the table benches and top of fireplace to place our stuff. We also had no AC. The signs on the wall said make sure you turn off the AC, but no AC. Our friends stayed in cabin 6 and it was so cute, bright, and had AC. Our other friend stayed in 2 and it was much better than ours as well. 3 was better too.

In addition they would not honor a AAA discount due to already paying, what?!

    Austin Campground

    Tucked Away Gem

Found this location while going to Elk State Forest for the elk bugling. Was very happy to find this location. Had clean bathrooms with running water and showers. Campground was tucked away between two mountains and sat next to a creek. Staff was friendly. Plenty of camp sites. Have yearly campsites which is apparent since some of the campers have more permanent structures around or attached to them. Pets allowed. Not the best place for hammock camping but have a few sites with good trees. Out of the main path but nice place to stay.

    Little Mexico Campground

    Friendly Staff

Little Mexico is a nice campground with lots of activities in the summer, situated on Penn’s Creek about 15 minutes from Lewisburg, PA. We camped there twice this summer and had enjoyable visits. The road leading to the campground is narrow and winding, but we didn’t experience any trouble. Check in was a breeze as all the paperwork and payment were taken care of prior to arrival and all we needed to do was pick up our gate pass, map and head to the site. The employees in the front office are amazing and some of the friendliest you will meet. The other employees we interacted with during our stays were equally as friendly and helpful!

Overall the sites are good sized, level and the majority have full hook-ups. The water pressure is good, electric stable, and good cable TV connections. There is no internet at the sites and only a moderate cell phone signal. Most of the transient sites are right next to each other with little barriers between. Tubs of wood can be delivered to the site and this good quality firewood! For$10 a load, stock up because it burns well with little obnoxious smoke.

There are various activities each weekend during the summer, a huge pool, playground, mini-golf, and of course Penn’s Creek to float. The only negative would be some of the seasonal sites do not feel the quiet hour times apply to them. Overall, Little Mexico is a nice campground in a beautiful location, with great people operating it!

Russell P Letterman Campground — Bald Eagle State Park

    Relaxing week great sites

Stayed in the modern camping section. Easy access to camp ground. The check in process was just to drive to the site and set up which was different but very easy. The sites are private on the sides with some green space to play on. Lots of extra places to park extra cars or bring a second vehicle with a boat.

The kids had fun riding the bikes around the loop and taking the short cuts cut in around the loop. We had fun walking to the foot bridge to go fishing.

The camping area was very quite both mornings and evenings. We saw the park rangers drive through multiple times per day.

The bathrooms were clean. There are no shelfs in the showers (except for a bar of soap) but they had hooks to hang your clothes.

The racoons were a fun surprise on our last night! We left the grease trap from the Blackstone out and the they found it. We did not see any bears though we heard they are there.

We had smoke from Canadian forest fires so haze in the pictures is smoke not haze or rainy days! The walking trails are great. You can see the largest white swamp oak in Pennsylvania!

Definitely check out Penns Cave too.

    Hills Creek State Park Campground

Well established and popular- perfect for groups

This is one of the main attractions for the area. Locals come here when the weather is nice.

We stayed in yurts, which are round tents ($38 per night). We had a cozy wooden deck and slept four people in two bunk beds. We also had a cooking stove, refrigerator, heat and electricity.

There is plenty of fishing and hiking to go around.

Really recommend this campsite if you have a little extra money to spend and are looking for a light getaway with friends.

If you're looking for a secluded place for yourself or with a loved one, I would look around the area for a less-popular campsite.

    Pettecote Junction Campground

    Soul Cleansing

Petticoat Junction campground is nestled in the PA Grand Canyon with Pine Creek on one side and the Rails to Trails on the other of the campground. This ideal location provides a nice tranquil environment with opportunities for active adventures. It had been several years since our last stay at PJC, but the new owners have done amazing improvements and upgrades to many areas of the campground which are greatly appreciated. Everyone we interacted with(owners/employees) were friendly and gave us the feeling that they were glad we chose to stay with them.

There are a variety of camping options from season sites, primitive sites, cabins, glamping tents, and RV hook-ups for water and electric(along the creek). We stated in one of the water/electric hook-up sites along the creek, which was wonderful. Very flat and larger than average in size, which was nice not being on top of your neighbor. Water pressure was very good and the WIFI signal was better than many campgrounds we have stayed.

The location of PJC is perfect for fishing, floating/kayaking, and biking/hiking the rails to trail. There are many nearby hikes throughout the canyon for the more adventures travelers. The office has biking/tubing/boating rentals for its campers. Additionally the firewood for sale is priced well and is very good quality, not the cheap smoky pine found in most places. If you need a break from civilization to reset and relax, I highly recommend PJC!

Guide to Cammal

Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon region, where Cammal is located, offers both established campgrounds and rustic yurt options throughout the year. The area sits at elevations between 700-1900 feet, creating distinct microclimates in the valleys and ridges. Campers frequently encounter wildlife including elk, eagles, and black bears while accessing the region's extensive trail systems.

What to do

Fishing access points: Little Pine State Park Campground provides easy creek access for trout fishing. "There is a lake for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Minutes away from Big Pine Creek and additional swimming, boating and fishing opportunity," notes James P., who appreciates the variety of water recreation options.

Pine Creek Rail Trail biking: Pettecote Junction Campground offers direct access to the rail trail. "This ideal location provides a nice tranquil environment with opportunities for active adventures. The office has biking/tubing/boating rentals for its campers," explains Craig F. The campground's position between the creek and trail creates convenient access points.

Wildlife viewing: Explore Sinnemahoning State Park Campground for excellent animal sightings. "You certainly don't have to travel far to get a glimpse of the wildlife: I had a close encounter with a massive bull elk just walking from my campsite to the restrooms at dawn!" reports John V. The visitor center offers additional wildlife viewing opportunities.

What campers like

Yurt camping options: Little Pine State Park offers year-round yurt camping near Cammal. "This state park has yurts you can rent to stay in and also so very good campsites too and good facilities. Hiking trails, a lake, huge picnic area too," shares Danielle W., highlighting the park's diverse accommodation options.

Creek proximity: DB Adventures (formerly Crooked Creek) offers waterfront sites. "Sites right on the creek! Great for trout fisherman, and those with dogs who love water like ours. Bathrooms were super clean," writes Patch. The creek access provides both recreation and ambient sound for sleeping.

Dark skies for stargazing: The remote location of Sinnemahoning creates exceptional night sky viewing. "It was a quiet sleep with dark skies for stargazing. The park staff was knowledgeable and super friendly," notes J K. The limited light pollution allows for celestial observation rarely possible in more developed areas.

What you should know

Limited connectivity: Cell service is minimal or non-existent in many campgrounds. "There is zero cell service/WiFi at the park, or for at least 5-10 miles from it," explains Shayna about Sinnemahoning. This disconnection creates both challenges and opportunities for truly unplugging.

Weather variability: The canyon creates unique weather patterns that can change quickly. "We think we picked the week with the most rain of the year to camp but it was still a lot of fun," says J K. about Hills Creek State Park. Prepare for temperature fluctuations between day and night.

Tent site conditions: Colton Point State Park Campground offers more primitive camping options. "The sites take a small hike so don't over pack! There is so much that this park has to offer. So many hikes, so many scenic overlooks," advises Sadie S. The walk-in sites provide more seclusion but require planning.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Happy Acres Resort features extensive play areas. "Playground was huge with multiple playsets suitable for all ages. Bathrooms/showers were clean and well kept. There was a basketball court, shuffleboard and carpet pool that you could borrow equipment for," reports Penny C.

Educational programs: Sinnemahoning offers ranger-led activities. "My kids love riding their bikes here. The nature center is great! Kid friendly and fun! They offer a free pontoon boat tour of the lake, reservations needed because spots fill up fast," recommends Amber N.

Swimming options: Hills Creek State Park provides dedicated swimming areas. "Lake available for swimming complete with snack bar, including ice cream! The rangers offer educational programs that are free of charge," shares Amanda H., noting the combination of recreation and learning opportunities.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Russell P Letterman Campground at Bald Eagle State Park offers various utility options. "The park has basic, water & electric as well as a few full hookup sites. The sites are very spacious with a picnic table and fire rings and are easy to back into even with a rig as big as ours," explains Cheryl W.

Site selection considerations: Little Pine has specific RV-friendly areas. "This is very rustic with electric options which is nice. The campsite we were at was very large probably better for a trailer," notes Zach P., who appreciated the space despite tent camping.

Road access limitations: When selecting yurt camping near Cammal, Pennsylvania, consider accessibility. "Roads were a little narrow but manageable. Everyone was very friendly and with the exception of one neighbor, dogs were kept mostly quiet," shares Greg J. about the Bald Eagle campground, highlighting both physical and social aspects of the camping experience.
