Cook Forest State Park Campground & Cabins offers designated pet-friendly camping areas with dedicated pet trails through the woods. The pet loop provides a more private camping experience with sites nestled among trees, creating natural separation between campers. Clear Creek State Park Campground also welcomes pets in specific loops, with sites 49-53 and 43 in the wooded areas considered the most desirable for tent camping with dogs. Both parks maintain clean facilities with hot showers and provide fire rings and picnic tables at each site. Campers with pets must keep them leashed at all times, and most reviewers note that fellow campers are generally respectful about pet control. The pet-friendly sections typically fill quickly during peak season, especially on holiday weekends, making reservations 8-9 months in advance recommended.

The Clarion River provides excellent recreation opportunities for dogs and their owners, with multiple access points for swimming and wading. Many campers bring their dogs to enjoy the water, though the current can be strong in some areas. Hiking trails throughout Cook Forest feature old-growth forest with 300+ year-old evergreen trees, moss, and ferns, creating scenic walking routes for leashed pets. The North Country Trail connects to the campground via short connector paths. Cell service is limited throughout the region, with Verizon typically showing one bar or less in most campgrounds. Firewood is available for purchase at most campgrounds, though some visitors recommend bringing your own as collecting sufficient dry wood can be challenging. The nearby towns of Clarion and Ridgway offer veterinary services and pet supplies if needed during longer stays.

      Clear Creek State Park Campground

      Great place to camp

We have tented and RV'd at Clear Creek. A must do when camping in Pennsylvania. The Clarian river is great for kayaking . Multiple trails off of park. Biking and breweries close by. if you have RV/travel trailer do NOT recommend the non-power sites, they are not level enough, you may really have to bring up the trailer. There were wonderful campsites hosts when we there

Pros; excellent location, great friendly people, clean and stocked bathrooms which include showers. Some sites are separated.. great camp hosts

Cons…a few sites are really close, however not a bad thing here as we got to meet a lot of great people, so for us it was kind of a Pro.

Cook Forest State Park Campground & Cabins

      Beautiful

Cooks forest is absolutely gorgeous. I look forward to returning as there are a lot of hiking opportunities we missed. We stayed in the pet friendly area, which was nice. There is a pet trail through the woods that was really great to take our dog rather than walking around the campground. Our site was right next to a drinking water spigot and a path to the bath house. The sites near ours were in a wooded area, which felt more private than many of the other sites we saw. There was a fore pit and a picnic table. Our fire pit was behind where the camper was parked, which also felt more private. There is no alcohol permitted in PA state parks, so alcohol is prohibited in the campground as well. It was a great spot, and we look forward to returning.

Red Bridge Recreation Area - Allegheny National Forest

      Love this place!

This is my favorite campground so far in PA.

For the most part, there isn’t a bad site (although we didn’t see any of the walk up sites, and I recommend not booking a site immediately next to the bathrooms since the ones without showers are more like “outhouse” toilets and can stink). The sites are private, flat, surrounded by trees, and have plenty of space. The ground is quite rocky though, so bring plenty of heavy duty tent steaks.

Highlights include: the reservoir (beautiful and clean! You can swim with your dog from the access points at the campground), quiet, friendly staff (a kind older gentleman helped us jump my car and refused to take any money as a thank you), updated/very clean showers, not buggy, reception is great (we have Verizon), plenty of room to social distance, and 2 trading posts about 1 mile away with milk, eggs, basic supplies, etc.

Cons: the bathrooms without showers aren’t flush toilets, and there is no campground office so you must see the hosts for any issues.

Things to do nearby (last 5 pictures): the Kinzua Skywalk Bridge free- an old train bridge that was partially destroyed by a tornado in the early 2000’s. The bridge is handicap/stroller accessible, pets are allowed. There is a small indoor museum & gift shop, and a hiking trail along the wreckage. If you hike, wear good sneakers, the path is rocky and VERY steep. The hiking path is not recommended for small children). Bathrooms on site.

The Kinzua Dam free - beautiful. Handicap/stroller accessible, pets permitted. Bathrooms were closed due to social distancing.

Rimmrock overlook free- just a small distance from the parking lot. NOT stroller/handicap accessible, and there are rock steps, however we saw numerous families with small children go through the path with no issues. Pets permitted. Bathrooms on site.

Nearby towns of Kane and Ridgway looked cute, but we didn’t spend time there due to our efforts to social distance.

Medix Run Camping Area — Moshannon State Forest

      Peaceful Repose

My 3 year old cat and I had a wonderful time staying here. It was incredibly quiet, no cell service (we use total wireless which uses Verizon towers), and I couldn’t hear any of the neighboring campsites (I stayed at #7) even though they were all full. Highly recommend this spot.

It rained almost every day but only for a half hour or so and went back to being sunny. Bring bug spray and tick collars for your pets.

I would recommend bringing firewood with you, as there wasn’t much to collect that was already dead and dry enough for burning. Several of the local gas stations sell some if you want to bring some on the way.

      Buckaloons

      Roomy and wooded

We come here at least once per summer. It is very family friendly, pet friendly and just beautiful. If you kayak, you can drop in up in Warren and come in right at the campground. Ice and wood available on site. Dollar general close by just in case.

Crooked Run Campground — Prince Gallitzin State Park

      Quiet and peaceful

This campground is perfect for people who are looking to get away from busy city life or just want to relax next to a lake. Even though you can't see the lake from every site you can be there within a 10 minute walk. They have pet friendly sites, bike trails, and you can canoe, kayak, and take boats out on the lake. There are specific swimming areas and you can fish just about anywhere. Little to no cell service and there are some local stores/restaurants around the lake within 5-10 miles of the campground but most things close between 8-10pm. There is a camp store with food and supplies available sonif you show up with a text and a sleeping bag they can help out with the rest. Keep in mind being in the woods and by the lake it Ian always 5-15 degrees cooler than the surroundings towns so I feel you are leaving and want to explore the areas outside the campground be prepared for it to be much warmer than expected. I've been going here my whole life (32 years) and it is always clean and the people who work/volunteer there are super friendly and helpful. I've been there during every month they are open and each season is a new and exciting experience. They have a lot I feel family oriented activities and so you don't need to leave to find something to do.

Crooked Run Campground — Prince Gallitzin State Park

      Depends what you’re looking for!

This campground was our least favorite of the many we’ve been to this summer, in large part because there were so many people! We stayed in 103 RedOak loop because we had our dogs. The site itself was fine, and there were no hook ups - which we knew- in that section. The mix of tents and smaller pop ups was nice. But, if you want to get away and be in nature this may not be your spot. The sites across/diagonal to us started playing movies on their big screen projector Friday and Sat. nights. If I wanted to hear my neighbors movies I would have stayed home. And others in our loop arrived late, close to 11 pm and spent the next hour hammering stakes for their tent. Everything just felt so loud. Because it was pet friendly there was a constant barking festival - our dogs included- because you were basically on the main loop road where everyone walked their dogs with little privacy.

We also hoped to work on Friday during our stay given they advertise WiFi. We paid for WiFi for the day and couldn’t get much work done. We won’t make that mistake again. There was little to no data for AT&T.

We spent a day on the lake on a pontoon that was from 1972. The younger staff were great and all respectful wearing masks. The lake was fine but nothing like Deep CreekMD or Summersville, WV. People were average friendly. The trails were nice enough but they were walking trails around the lake. Our dogs liked that.

If you want to kayak or fish, that’s the adventure you’ll get here. And you will be in campground Americana with 300 other people.

    Guide to Brookville

Brookville camping options range from established state parks to rustic dispersed sites throughout the Allegheny National Forest region. The area sits at an elevation of approximately 1,200-1,400 feet in western Pennsylvania's forested highlands, where oak, maple and evergreen trees create typical Appalachian woodland habitat. Several campgrounds near Brookville connect to the North Country National Scenic Trail system, offering short day hikes or longer multi-day treks.

    What to do

Disc golf course access: Clear Creek State Park Campground provides an on-site disc golf course for campers seeking recreational activities. "Beautiful location. This is one of the nicest [parks in Pennsylvania]," notes camper Tom O. who visited Clear Creek State Park Campground.

River tubing opportunities: The Clarion River runs through several campgrounds, offering gentle float trips. "We stayed a week and absolutely loved it. Our children enjoyed the Saturday kids program, crafts, snacks and games with other children," says a review from Rustic Acres, located near river access points. Many campers bring their own tubes or rent from local outfitters.

Explore secluded hiking trails: Several dispersed camping sites near Loleta Road allow direct access to forest hiking paths. "I've been camping here for 5 years now and it's always a good time," reports camper Dylan H. about the Loleta Road Dispersed Campsite, which connects to forest service roads and trails.

Trailheads from campgrounds: Many campsites serve as access points to longer hiking routes. "This campground was great! Very close to the fire tower and other things to see around it," writes Sienna L. about Cook Forest's Ridge Campground.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Several campgrounds offer wooded separation between camping spots. "The Campground was really nice, some spots gave you enough space to feel pretty secluded from other campers," notes Courtney K. about Cook Forest State Park Campground & Cabins.

Clean shower facilities: Consistently maintained bathhouses rate highly among visitors. "The bathrooms were clean with large shower areas and always fully stocked with tissue," reports a camper at Clear Creek State Park.

Campground entertainment: Some private campgrounds offer structured activities. "Our kids loved the arcade and the candy scavenger hunt. Gorgeous night skies," says Tiffany V. about Kalyumet Campground, which offers recreational options for families with children.

Off-grid experience: For those seeking to disconnect, the limited cell service becomes a feature. "No internet or smartphone connection at the campsites but a short drive toward town and you get it," mentions Greg M. about Loleta Recreation Area.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular dog friendly campgrounds near Brookville fill quickly, particularly on summer weekends. "Our sites are hugged by tall evergreens and level ground, something not easily found on the mountain," notes a camper about Cook Forest, adding "you'd do best to book 8-9 months out for this particular weekend [Memorial Day]."

Weather considerations: The region experiences typical Appalachian weather patterns with regular afternoon thunderstorms in summer. "Could have done with less rain. Otherwise very satisfied," reports Greg M. about his stay at Loleta Recreation.

Limited connectivity: Cell service varies throughout the region. "None of the major carriers have service here, but I needed to 'get away' for the night so it was perfect," writes Sara about Clear Creek State Park Campground.

Wildlife encounters: Black bears inhabit the forests around camping areas. "I did have two separate run-ins with bears but overall a great experience!" reports Caitlyn H. about Clear Creek State Park. Store food properly in sealed containers.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access for children: Several campgrounds feature designated swimming areas for family recreation. "Clear Creek runs through the campground and is a perfect spot for a BBQ or Picnic. It also has a designated swimming beach with sand," writes a reviewer at Clear Creek State Park.

Playground facilities: Some campgrounds maintain playground equipment for younger visitors. "Great campground just be sure to get the correct site," advises Ember M. about Kalyumet Campground, noting "We enjoyed the pool, the walking/hiking trails, a trip into Cooks Forest, and even spent some time at the arcade."

Nature programs: Educational opportunities exist for children interested in natural sciences. "This is also a great place to go year-round for kids interested in learning about nature. There is a nature museum. Seek out Ranger Susanne—she is a really great teacher!" recommends Laura C. regarding Clear Creek State Park.

Campground layout considerations: Choose sites based on proximity to amenities when camping with children. "The camp ground was quiet and extremely peaceful. We were escorted to our site by the owners who were very nice," reports Misty L. about Rustic Acres.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Many RV sites in the region require adjustment due to terrain. "Most of the spots will require leveling blocks," warns Isaac R. about Clear Creek State Park Campground.

Hookup access challenges: The forested nature of many campgrounds can create utility connection issues. "Some sites require over 50' of hose and multiple power cords to reach power box due to the great amount of trees providing good shade throughout camp ground," advises Fred R. about Kalyumet Campground.

Big rig accessibility: Several campgrounds accommodate larger recreational vehicles despite forested settings. "This KOA is way back in the woods. Love it. Rock sites mostly level. Most sites are huge," notes Bill B. about DuBois / Treasure Lake KOA, adding "Some sites have concrete patio which I do recommend."

Campsite selection strategy: RV campers should research specific site details before booking. "Our only complaint would be the site we were in (11) and others next to it were quite far from the water and cable hookups. I ended up having to run 60ft of water hose and 50ft of cable," warns a reviewer about Kalyumet Campground.
