Tomlinson Run State Park Campground sits nestled in the woodlands of West Virginia, just under an hour from Baden, Pennsylvania. The park features elevation changes throughout its camping areas, with most sites positioned on hillsides surrounded by mature forest. Winter temperatures typically range from 20-40°F, while summer camping season brings humid conditions with daytime highs in the 80s.
What to do
Hiking trails for all levels: At Tomlinson Run State Park Campground, visitors can explore several marked trails through diverse terrain. "There are lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream. Hiking poles are recommended especially if it rains," notes Shannon G.
Fishing opportunities: The lake at Mill Creek Camping provides multiple shoreline access points for anglers. "Beautiful campground, quiet, not to crowded... Our camp site was in close proximity to the restroom facilities. We were fourtante that our spot was right beside the lake and we could keep the boat docked their during our stay," shares Renee G.
Winter activities: Yurt camping near Baden, Pennsylvania extends into colder months at select locations. "This was an awesome place for a winter trip! The tent sites were big and right on the lake. Everyone was so kind!" explains Sienna L. about Salem-Lisbon KOA, which offers year-round accommodations including heated yurts.
What campers like
Private waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate the secluded water access at Breakneck Campground. "We were lucky enough to be able to to camp down by the stream. There are designated fireplaces. It is quite a walk up the hill to the campground amenities, but worth it to feel secluded down by the creek," explains Britt B.
Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention the upkeep of amenities. "Probably the cleanest shower house I have ever seen at a campground," notes John M. about Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest, which offers comfortable yurt accommodations near Baden.
Spacious sites with privacy: The layout of campsites receives positive feedback. "Electric Site 37 - pad is pretty level, plenty for our small camper and truck, on a slight hill to get to fire ring but lots of space to spread out. You could tent but not really a flat spot. We were near the non-electric cul de sac and a neighbor right across but not on top of each other. Trees are everywhere and wonderful during the fall season," shares Shannon G.
What you should know
Site layout challenges: Not all sites are created equal, especially for larger rigs. "Although cool, I'm glad we didn't reserve a scenic campsite. Those sites are very close to one another, where I could see noise being an issue for anyone that prefers the sounds of nature over their neighbors drunken stupor," explains Ben from Breakneck Campground.
Water conservation needed: For yurt accommodations with plumbing near Baden, water usage requires planning. "If you stay in one of the smaller kabins with a shower, just know there will be a flood and you should wet, turn the water off, lather, then rinse. Also don't think everyone is showering one after the other or you can do dishes and wash hands as much as you want before showering because it's very small water tank, it goes lukewarm to cold quick," advises Jess I.
Seasonal water access: Facilities change with the seasons. "Have to go up to entrance as the water spouts are still shut off," notes Shannon G. about off-season camping at Tomlinson Run, which affects how campers need to plan for water needs.
Tips for camping with families
Look for playgrounds and pools: Family-friendly amenities make a difference. "They have a pool, arcade, etc. but if you want some privacy in the great outdoors this definitely isn't the place. It feels more like camping in a little neighborhood than at a campsite," explains Nicole M. about Rose Point Park.
Consider themed weekends: Special events enhance family camping experiences. "Halloween weekends are a great time to visit!" recommends Terra B. These often include activities like "Pumpkin Carving Contest, Voting On Pumpkins, Campstore Sales, T-Shirts And Apparel, Dance Party" according to Owen I.
Check noise levels: Sound carries in campgrounds, affecting family sleep. "I got about 2 hours of sleep Saturday night total, and the last time I was woken up my watch said 3:48 am. Clearly there is absolutely no enforcement of the quiet hours whatsoever," warns Sara K. about weekend parties at some locations.
Tips from RVers
Verify route information: GPS systems don't always provide the best routes for large rigs. "We use both the RV Garmin 890 & RV Trip Wizard and both had us doing some crazy side roads to get into the KOA. Be sure to use the park's directions for an easier drive in. Totally fine when we left using their instructions," advises Jen O. from Mercer-Grove City KOA.
Check site levelness: Many campgrounds in the region have uneven terrain. "I couldn't get it level with my Anderson levelers it was pretty slopped. On my way out I heard they were having someone come in to level the sites so I imagine it was just the time of year we visited," shares Patience W.
Look for winter hookup protection: For cold-weather yurt camping near Baden, infrastructure matters. "They've done a great job in the winter despite the frigid weather by using heat tape on the spigots and leaving lots of information at the office," notes Zachary H. about Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA's winter operations.
