Overview

Candle Creek Campground sits at the confluence of the Metolius River and Candle Creek. It is at the end of the Metolius Valley and on the river where the rapids start. This unique location makes it a very popular spot among locals.

Recreation

Hiking and fishing top the list of recreational activities for visitors. For anglers, the spring-fed Metolius river offers a stunning setting for fly-fishing. The clear, cold water supports rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout and kokanee salmon. For day hikers and backpackers, the area offers a wide variety of scenic terrain, ranging from riverside trails to routes in subalpine forests.

Natural Features

The headwaters of the adjacent Metolius River are at Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte, a 3,076-foot cinder cone. The clear, cold river flows north from the springs through diverse coniferous forest and a landscape of volcanic activity. The area provides habitat for mammals such as mule deer, coyote and cougar. Migratory birds and native fish also call the area home.

Nearby Attractions

The Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform allows visitors the chance to view a variety of types of fish while the Metolius Research Natural Area gives bird watchers ample opportunities. Visit the Metolius Fish Hatchery or Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery display ponds to observe and feed different types of salmon and other fish. The Metolius-Windigo Trail, open to hikers, bikers and horses, is more than 100 miles in length and begins near the Metolius River headwaters west of the town of Sisters, Oregon. The trail was created in the 1980s primarily to serve long-distance horse riders seeking an alternative to the Pacific Crest Trail. Lava Lands Visitor Center in nearby Bend, Oregon, and the unique geological landscape of Newberry National Volcanic Monument draw visitors to the region as well. It is a great starting point for visitors to learn about the diverse landscape and history of the area through interpretive programs and exhibits. Visitors can also explore the Lava River Cave, located in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. At 5,211 feet in length, the northwest section of the cave is the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon.

Fine river site

May 20, 2023 site is open and active with weekend campers.

Good space between sites, tables, fire pits. Rv'ers will find level hard to find. Wow the sound of the full river is wonderful. No bugs either, love it.

Excellent place to hang out and fish if your so inclined.

Roomy rustic sites

We love this campground. It is definitely rustic, one pit toilet and no running water.

Getting there is easier w/4wd but there were passenger cars there too.

Campsites are very roomy with huge tent pads and space for hammocks, camp kitchen, etc. Half are along the Metolius and half are along the creek.

The trail that leads from the campground along the river is a lovely hike for all ages.

Secluded - worth the drive

While there were some harrowing moments getting to this campground with our 16' pull-behind toy hauler(last mile or so is dirt road with a couple of knarly soft sand areas that you have to plow through quickly or risk getting stuck), upon arrival the site was amazing. HUGE sites(we could have had 6 more people with us each in their own tent), right on the rushing whitewater of the Metolius. The river is loud.:) Clear, dusty sites. Little to no stargazing due to lots of tree cover. No host, no potable water. Situated right between the Metolius and Candle Creek (which is really a small river), so all sites are essentially waterfront.

Trail runs right through the campground, but we saw no one.  Good hike along the river.

Really great secluded campground- which is saying a lot for Central Oregon in the summer!

Relaxing Creek Side Campground

This small campground sits alongside Candle Creek and is awesome.  The sites are huge and the creek provides great white noise.  The sites are large and can fit multiple tents.  I put my hammock up and relaxed all weekend.

Please note, it is easy to get lost following the android directions.  I followed my phone and went way in the wrong direction before turning around.  If in doubt the camp host at one of the many other campgrounds along the road gave great directions.  Also the road did have big pot holes that could be difficult for low clearance vehicles.

There is also no potable water, so bring your own.

Beautiful,

I love this campground. The river is very swift and dangerous- is be very worried about young children near the banks. The creek side is calmer but ice cold and swift as well. Rugged.
#7 is our favorite. The sites are huge. Tons of hiking close by.
