Lake Murray State Park near Ardmore, Oklahoma sits at around 750 feet elevation in the rolling hills of the Arbuckle Mountains. The park surrounds a 5,700-acre lake with water that's remarkably clearer than many Oklahoma lakes. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing at night even when days are mild, requiring cabin guests to prepare for significant temperature variations.
What to do
Explore Tucker Tower: Located within Lake Murray State Park, this historical structure offers educational exhibits and lake views. "The tower has a dock if you want to take the tour... Oklahoma is often known for its red/brown lakes, but Lake Murray is an exception. Green/blue waters that were clear enough to see the tip of my paddle when stuck straight down 4-5 feet," notes a visitor to Buzzards Roost Campground.
Hike the trails: The Buckhorn Trail connects several campgrounds and offers moderate terrain suitable for families. "We were able to go on the Buck horn trail which wasn't that long and was filled with families hiking," reports a camper at Elephant Rock Campground.
Visit caves and waterfalls: Turner Falls area features natural formations within short driving distance of most cabins. "The trails are awesome, there is even a cave in an off the trail area back behind the bathrooms at the waterfall. Stay in the wash out area and hike up a ways and than off to your left you climb this up hill rock boulder up to the cave," explains a visitor to Turner Falls Park.
What campers like
Off-season tranquility: Winter and fall visits offer lower crowds and pleasant experiences for cabin stays. "Stopped here on the way south to San Antonio. There were only two RVs in the entire campground. Reservations easily made online. Chose a nice spot adjacent to the Lake where I was visited by a friendly goose for breakfast," shares a camper at Elephant Rock Campground.
Water clarity: Unlike many Oklahoma lakes, Lake Murray offers exceptional visibility. "We camp at Lake Murray State Park, Elephant rock RV area... Full hookups as well as some water and electric only. Of all the areas we camp.... this is the best. Hiking, golf, fishing, great Lodge with a wonderful place to eat... Foggy Bottom," notes a guest at Lake Murray Resort.
Waterfront sites: Many cabins and camping areas feature direct lake access. "We paid a little more (about $7) to be right on the lake," mentions a visitor to Cedar Grove Campground, while another camper adds, "We stayed on the water at Cedar Cove and had a waterfront spot and no sewer hookup. We loved the shade and the trees. Perfect for the heat."
What you should know
Reservation timing: Cabins near Ardmore book quickly, especially waterfront locations. "Reservations are essential, particularly during summer months and holiday weekends when cabins book quickly," and "if you want to rent a boat or jet skis I recommend booking that FAR in advance," advises a Tipps Point Campground visitor.
Site layout challenges: Some cabin and camping areas have awkward utility placements. "The site I reserved (Site 21) was a mere 3 ft from the road. Not too big of a problem, except that I'm a light sleeper and cars/trucks/RV's, trucks pulling trailers, motorcycles etc. noisily and regularly drive right by," reports a Tipps Point camper.
Weather variations: Temperature fluctuations can be significant even during mild seasons. "I camped here in November and was not at all prepared for how cold it was at night. We arrived after dark and set up and went to sleep right away," shares a visitor to Turner Falls Park.
Tips for camping with families
Swimming areas: Multiple designated swim spots exist around the lake with varying amenities. "The park has cabins of varying hook-ups... Lake Murray is a favorite camping area for us. Campgrounds are clean, have childrens play area, and cost is reasonable," notes a visitor to Lake Murray Resort.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Morning hours offer the best animal sighting chances near cabin areas. "Seen some deer after we got rained out and spent a whole day in the tent with the family," reports a Turner Falls visitor.
Playground access: Many camping areas feature play equipment near cabin clusters. "We really love coming to Elephant Rock. It has great options- some spots are secluded in the trees and some are open in the middle areas if you want to be around people. It has lake access, great playgrounds for kids, close to town with everything you need," shares a visitor.
Tips from RVers
Parking fees: Be aware of additional vehicle costs when staying in cabins or RV sites. "WARNING: Oklahoma State Parks charge a daily parking fee per vehicle of $10 in addition to the camping fee and they enforce it...just saying from experience...read the information carefully!" warns a Lake Murray Resort visitor.
Water connection distance: Some sites require long hoses to reach hookups. "We did have to borrow a water hose. The water hookup was nearly 70' from us," shares a Cedar Grove camper.
Seasonal capacity: Summer weekends reach maximum capacity, while winter provides quiet options. "Busy as can be lots of people. If you like to camp and be secluded this isn't the park. There are a couple great spots but the go fast. We got here on Wednesday and most of the secluded spots were taken."
