    FHUs Sites in a field

    PROS

Very nice campground but the design leaves a lot to be desired

Friendly camp hosts who were busy picking up trash in common areas and cleaning sites Moveable picnic table

Metal fire ring with cooking grate

Site D45 level asphalt parking pad surrounded by grass

Great view of lake from D loop; some had water access at rear of site

Quiet except for campground party animals who kept it going into the wee hours of the morning

Coin-operated laundromats in non FHU loops $1.50 wash and $1 dry

Free WIFI available and able to connect at campsite

Dump Stations at Park exit have complimentary hoses

Camp store sells hard dipped ice cream

14 miles from the Airstream Service Center in Jackson Center

    CONS

    No senior discount

$6.50 reservation fee for self made on-line reservation

Basically the FHU loops are out in a field…no privacy from neighbors and no shade what so ever

Grass around sites desperately needed mowed, if you could get thru the large mud puddles

FHU loop D has narrow roads and require driving on grass to back in trailer and some campers in other sites had to move their vehicles

Short length of campsite required creative parking of tow vehicle

Damn Canadian Geese poop every...what a mess!

Site number on electric utility box

FHU sewer connection at the back of the campsite so bring the looooong stinky slinky FHU loop D had tiny toilet building, but no showers; showers were in non-FHU loops

No entry gate personnel on a Friday afternoon to accomplish check-in. Went to park office next morning and was informed no check in required prior to Memorial Day. Never saw a Park ranger driving thru campground

Venture Out Resorts Arrowhead Lakes Resort

    Big rigs to tents

We stayed here for free for 10 days as a part of a promotion that came with the purchase of our rig. Not sure about normal pricing though, as this campground is owned by Venture Out Resorts and they are a timeshare company (we had to sit for a hour long "pitch" to get our free days). They have 50amp, full hookup, pull through sites (and we saw 40+ ft rigs there) to tent camping to cabin rentals. The campground was clean (shower houses always looked great) and grounds were maintained. Amenities include an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna (close at 10p), but we did not partake because it was so overridden by children, chlorine, and no open windows - didn't seem worth any effort whatsoever in the July heat. The amenities we did checkout (close nightly at 8p) included their new 18 hole mini golf course, small arcade (4 games and pinball was broken 😢), loaner bikes, and water toys (we liked the paddle bikes). The company recently bought the property, so you can see what they inherited vs what it will probably eventually be like based off their sister properties (they recently added the putt putt and a big jungle gym) so it could evolve more as time passes. Regardless, in its current state as active 30 somethings, we were pretty bored. No hiking, significant highway noise, yes a couple big ponds, but a truck stop and truck storage is behind both - so no views. Most of the campers we saw were elderly or had young kids. I'd say if you fall into a category where you want to sit beside your rig all day or want your kids entertained (playgrounds, kids programming - it was luau week so they had a Moana movie night and other kid activities), go on and book a longer stay. If you're only looking for a spot to stay overnight by the highway, do it! It is simple to pull in and have full hookups to take advantage of but a 10 day stay is too long if you're paying. Other things to know: Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy. That said truck stop above was very convenient to get into to fuel up our rig too. Fun fact: Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta and the Armstrong Air & Space Museum is also a max 5 min drive away if you want to get your inner astronaut fix.

    Nice little weekend getaway

    Indian Lake State Park Campground

    Lots of sites

Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit. The fire ring was nice but our picnic table was beat up. I went to move it and the seat pulled right off. We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn’t packed. There are a ton of sites. Some had great shade and others didn’t have any at all. The bathrooms were flush toilets and they did have shower houses too. The camp store is really big and it’s right next to their pool. They have a dog park, place to dock your boat and a small beach. I would imagine this would be a pretty busy during the summer.

    Lake Loramie State Park Campground

Perfect retreat for the family or solo adventure

Relax on the waters edge in shear tranquility. Perfect beach for swimming, excellent trails for hiking, and awesome lake to boat. Multiple launch ramps provide ease and convenience. Rent a canoe or kayak and head out for some time alone or with your favorite person. The cabins are heated but pets are not allowed. Campground is huge as are the sites. Some are premium, there’s a few ADA and some lakeside making for a great view to enjoy your morning coffee.

Fun for kids during the day and sage at night.

We have stayed many times. Love being so close to the lake we can fish all the time. The beach is a bit of a walk from the campground but not to far. They offer canoe rentals, and bike rentals. The park also has beautiful cabins on the lake shore.

    Indian Lake State Park Campground

    Hidden gem

Traveling with a dog is not always easy, but I throughly enjoyed my stay. Will be back again, happy it wasn’t full of people. Wifi strong, Verizon service great, premium electric (I have 30amp and there was a hookup), no water as it’s winter meaning no bathrooms (there is a porterhouse). Clean sites and friendly folks.

    Indian Springs Campground

    Dirty

Dirty restrooms. Dirty lake. You have to pay extra to use the slide. Camp sites have been cut in half. Only 1 bathhouse/restrooms all the eay in the front at the beach. On the 2nf day we did find a porta potty in the back but it was nasty and everyone refused to use it. Manager was rude when i could not fit my car, tent (10x20), table and fire ring on out site. Told me o had to move my tent 1 foot over after it was already set up and loaded with beds. She left and I pulled it down and restaked just in time for her to vome and look disappointed that i had followed her order to pull it down and said i did not have to do that. The site was mostly dirt very little to no grass. When it rained we had nothing but mud. Hay rides on the weekend were late and the man driving it went way to fast down the back hill making you feel you were about to fall out. Employees childrwn throwing water on the people riding the hay ride. Someone went around fogging for mosquitos and allowed the children to run and play in the fog. Karaoke lady was extremely rude to all the children.

    Wapakoneta KOA

    Impressive!

Super clean KOA with level gravel sites (no weeds popping up through gravel!) 2 Fenced dog areas, nice playground, game room, giant chess set outside, clean pool.. you name it, this KOA has it! I was impressed when Mike helped me back into my site.. it had a little wooden deck with a picnic table (I did not request nor pay extra for this perk!) I noticed something that I've not seen at other campgrounds: each of the waste connection covers had a 'fake' rock over the top. Very clever! The KOA is very tidy and well kept.

Nice folks here. I would highly recommend it!

Guide to Van Wert

Cabin accommodations near Van Wert, Ohio offer year-round options with varying amenities across multiple counties. Most cabins in this region sit at elevations between 700-850 feet above sea level, with summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F during peak camping season. Winter cabin reservations remain available at several locations when state parks limit their seasonal offerings.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Twin Lakes Park, visitors can enjoy both fishing and swimming lakes with diverse catch options. "Caught some decent bass and kids enjoyed all the bluegill fishing," notes Lauren R., who appreciated the family-friendly fishing environment at this smaller campground.

Space exploration history: Several cabin rental properties provide convenient access to nearby space history attractions. The Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta sits approximately 30 minutes east of Van Wert. "Neil Armstrong was born in nearby Wapakoneta so there are some sights to see there, and the towns of Celina and one other are cute too," shares Megan M., who explored the area while staying at Grand Lake St. Marys.

Recreation amenities: Cabin campers seeking additional recreational options can find them at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park. "Large spacious sites with cement or paved spots. Can be muddy after rain. Has a pool, playground, putt putt golf, boat docks, hiking trails, and some other great amenities," according to Ashleigh D., highlighting the range of activities beyond standard camping.

What campers like

Lake access: Many cabin campers appreciate direct lake access for morning fishing and evening relaxation. According to Twin Lakes Park visitor Lauren R., "Playground is great, lots to do, and the fishing and swimming lakes are nice," demonstrating the appeal of multi-purpose water features near cabin accommodations.

Family-friendly environments: Indian Lake State Park Campground receives consistent praise for its family orientation. "This is definitely a campground for families and for those who want lots of company in their experience," explains leif D., noting the social atmosphere that many cabin campers seek during summer months.

Varied water features: Water amenities rank highly among cabin camper priorities in the Van Wert region. "There is a Waterpark, pool, and hot tub at this campground you can access for an additional price," reports fred F. about Kimpels Hickory Acres, highlighting the supplemental water recreation options beyond natural lakes.

What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: Some cabin areas provide ample space while others place units closer together. "The pull through area is very cramped; more like a parking lot; the campground is quiet; family friendly; no golf carts all over," observes Kim M. about Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, pointing out both positives and negatives of site arrangement.

Water quality concerns: Lake conditions can affect cabin camping experiences during certain seasons. "The entire lake stinks of pig poop. All the air smells like poo. You feel like you are breathing feces when you approach the water," warns Megan M. about Grand Lake St. Marys during summer months when algae blooms can occur.

Highway noise: Several cabin locations sit near major roadways, creating noise considerations for light sleepers. According to Twin Lakes Park visitor Gene L., campers should expect "loud noise from the highway," which can be a factor when selecting specific cabin locations within a property.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access timing: When planning daily activities with children, note that some facilities have unexpected closure periods. "Weirdly, the pool closed from 4 to 5, leaving us with nowhere to go on a 90+ degree day," reports Megan M. about Grand Lake St. Marys, suggesting families should verify all operating hours before making plans.

Kid-friendly programming: Camp Timber Lake offers unique recreational options for families staying in cabins. "Next time we will have to try the zip-lines!" mentions Ashley J., highlighting an unusual feature that sets this location apart from standard cabin campgrounds for family entertainment.

Playground proximity: When booking cabin sites with children, consider proximity to play areas. "Could sit at our spot and watch our kids at the playground. This particular week there were tons of kids and our kids had a great time," shares Chad W. about Grand Lake St. Marys, emphasizing the convenience of strategic cabin placement.

Tips from RVers

Site surface variations: RV campers staying in cabins note important differences in parking and setup areas. "Large spacious sites with cement or paved spots. Can be muddy after rain," advises Ashleigh D. about Wapakoneta KOA, suggesting campers bring appropriate footwear and setup equipment for variable conditions.

Campground amenities: RV travelers appreciate cabin locations with comprehensive facilities. "The campground has a nice playground, nine hole puttputt, pool and other recreational activities," explains Carol W. about Wapakoneta KOA, noting the benefit of having multiple activities without needing to drive elsewhere.

Supply accessibility: Cabin campers should note the convenient retail options near several locations. "Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy," shares C O. about Venture Out Resorts Arrowhead Lakes Resort, highlighting the practicality for last-minute needs.
