Best RV Parks & Resorts near Stout, OH

Shawnee State Park Campground provides electric-only RV sites with 30-amp service and no sewer or water hookups at individual sites. The campground features asphalt pads of varying lengths, with some sites accommodating larger rigs up to 48 feet. Nearby, Long's Retreat Family Resort offers full hookup RV sites with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections, operating seasonally from April through October. The Ole Cornfield provides electric sites with 50-amp hookups, drinking water access, and a dump station for RVs. Site dimensions and layouts vary significantly across these parks, with several offering pull-through options for easier access. "Sites are level and pull through with 50 amp service. There is city water available and a dump station. Very clean place and the staff are great to work with."

Several RV parks in the region require advance reservations, particularly during summer and fall weekends when occupancy rates peak. Cell service varies considerably, with some campgrounds reporting strong Verizon coverage while others have limited or no connectivity. Many sites are equipped with fire rings and picnic tables, though proximity to neighboring campers differs between parks. A review noted that "for a park so close to a large city, I was surprised the cell service was so lacking on Verizon. We eked out one and occasionally two bars of 4G." Dump stations are typically available at park entrances, though weekend departure times may create waiting lines. Electric-only sites predominate in state parks, while private RV parks generally offer more full-hookup options with sewer connections.

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park

Great place for passers through or staycationers.

We have stayed in four sites her during the past couple of month. There are two walk-in sites (10 & 51). Both were pleasant, nearly level, close to amenities, but were under no shade. [Site 10 is presently inhabited by a large family with a sign that says “Camp Host out front. I have not seen them do anything for campers here, and the site is kept in disgraceful cluttered condition.] we next stayed on Lot 13, which backs up to the primitive campground. Quite nice, but beware: this site as well as about half of the other sites at this campground require the use of electrical and water extensions because the connections are on the “wrong” side of the RV, and quite a distance away. For Lot 13, I needed over 50’ of extensions. We then stayed on walk-in lot 51. I was able to “self permit” at the gate…it’s first come first served, no online reservations. Nice, but no shade. Finally, we’re on Lot 47. Eureka! This is my favorite so far. It’s one of the “premium sites” with wooden deck and nicer picnic table for only $2 additional per night. View is phenomenal, and it’s close enough to dumpsters and gatehouse. Notice that I didn’t mention anything about sewer hookups. That’s because there are none. There is a single, very popular dump station near the entrance/exit.
There are several miles of decent trails here, a swimming pool, putt putt golf, a pioneer museum, and a lodge with a good restaurant. The campground is easily accessible and is very kid and pet friendly. Nice sites for tent camping. Facilities are a bit dated, but clean and well maintained. All RV sites are back-in, and some are limited length. (Though some campers have rather cleverly managed to pull through a couple of the sites.) Some are quite unlevel.
Overall good family campground on rich historical site.

    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

    It’s pretty nice

A lot of their sites have full hook up but not all of them. Read the details of the sites when booking. Some of the sites have really steep grades and aren’t big rig friendly.

Check in was a breeze had out car tags on our post.

They do have a full-time camp host on site.

I didn’t use the shower 🚿 house but they do have a couple on the grounds.

They have a putt putt course but bring your own putter and ball.

There is Verizon service but it’s spotty.

They do have WiFi but it’s very slow and not secure.

Place is very pet friendly. The people we have met here are great.

Sites are wide but really close together.

One-Night Adventure: Our Shakedown Trip in the New Travel Trailer

Campsite Review for Site 6 – Gateway to Wayne National Forest

Our recent camping trip at this campground was an excellent way to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Wayne National Forest. The serene forest setting provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxing outdoor adventure, with the campground offering all the basics needed for a comfortable stay.

We stayed at Site 6 in our travel trailer, enjoying the ease of a pull-through site. Although the water and electric hookups are on the opposite side unless you drive through the loop the wrong way, this setup has an unexpected benefit—it faces directly toward the woods. This orientation allowed us to savor the tranquility of the forest, adding a layer of privacy and a more intimate connection with nature.

While the sites are decently sized, they are closely positioned with minimal separation, which might limit privacy in other areas. However, the majestic surroundings of Wayne National Forest more than make up for this. The proximity to hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and the peaceful ambiance of the trees create an immersive experience that’s hard to beat.

All in all, this campground is a fantastic base for exploring Wayne National Forest. The combination of basic amenities, convenient access, and the enchanting forest environment makes it a great spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Ohio River Campground - Hidden Gem

This is a peaceful and quiet campground located along the Ohio River. All sites have 50 amp and water hook ups. Most have fire rings and picnic tables. It is amazing to watch the river barges go by and they also have fishing available. Shower house is clean and warm!!

    East Fork State Park Campground

HUGE state park with many activities

General: Huge state park with over 400 sites. All are pet-friendly and electric. About 20 are FHU. While tent camping is permitted, certain sites are not recommended for it as there would be no place to pitch a tent. One loop is for equestrian camping but when we were there, I only saw one horse trailer, and the rest were occupied by RV campers.

Site Quality: All camper pads are paved and most appeared level or just very slightly sloped. A picnic table and fire ring complete the site. Some sites have more trees to provide privacy while others are closer together with little separation.

Bath/Shower House: Not all loops have their own bath house and the I loop where we stayed was one of them. We used the one in the H Loop. The bathhouses were clean, and the shower had nice hot water, however, it doesn’t seem like there were sufficient facilities for how large the campground was (H Loop had two showers, two toilets, and three sinks). Hooks or shelves would have been appreciated.

Activities/Amenities: Many activities can be enjoyed here including mini golf (small nine-hole course), soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball, corn hole, boating, and bicycling. Playgrounds are in several loops (I saw them in C and G). Rentals are available but most are only in season (ended September 30). There is a nature center and several hiking or paved biking/walking trails. There is also a camper beach for boating and swimming.

When we reserved months earlier, we knew that our first night (a Saturday) was 100% full as we got the very last site. What we did not know is that there was a HUGE Halloween celebration complete with 30-40 decorated golf carts parading through the campground. The road was closed until 6:45 pm (we arrived around 7 pm) and cars lined both sides of the approximately two-mile road! If that's your thing, great but it wasn't necessarily ours!

I appreciate that this park encourages so much outdoor activity, but it is not very pedestrian-friendly. I walked the road from one end to the other and there was no shoulder and, in many spots, no place to safely step off into the grass. I’m guessing it is assumed you will either have a car or golf cart to get around.

One final note: for a park so close to a large city (Cincinnati), I was surprised the cell service was so lacking (on Verizon). We eked out one and occasionally two bars of 4G.

    Sandy Springs Campground

Amazing experience at Sandy Springs Campground

Sandy Springs Campground is this awesome little gem on the Ohio River. It is a small family owned and family oriented Campground with some amazing views of the foothills of Ohio and Kentucky. The Campground is super clean and well maintained. They have full hookups and 30/50 Amp service. There are pull through sites and river front sites. They have several rental options and the coolest house boat over looking the river with a wrap around porch. They have really nice shower and laundry facilities. There is a pretty cool camp store there too. The best part is the friendly people and atmosphere. The owners work very hard here. They take very good care of the guests and there are always plenty of activities on the weekends and holidays. The prices are definitely affordable and can't be beat anywhere I have stayed before. Couldn't recommend a better place to stay on your next camping adventure.

    Twin Knobs Recreation Area

    Twin Knobs

This drive in camp site is a pay only and it’s best to call a couple weeks before your trip to reserve you spot! You can tent camp, pop up, or set up your pull behind. Twin Knobs is very clean and spacious campsites and most are on the water! This campground has basketball courts, a beach area, restrooms and more. Pet friendly but must stay on a leash.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

    Below average

This is a small campground situated next to a golf course. There are several nice sites but others are not ideal. Our site (13) was ok, other than the scattered broken glass and trash. The main issue was lack of oversight from staff. The site next to us was completely packed with their fifth wheel, a large tent, pop up canopy, four vehicles, a kayak trailer, and a boat that was in the corner of our site. They did not leash their dogs and did not pick up after them. We didn’t complain about them encroaching on our site but felt that the campground should enforce their own rules. Another site nearby setup a construction light at night that lit up the entire campground like a stadium and stayed on late into the night. Basically, campers are left to do as they please regardless of whether it is inconsiderate of other campers. The positive is the location is only a few minutes from the boat ramp for the most popular kayaking spot.

    Zilpo Campground

    Starting to get rundown

We camped there last week.  Spots F10, F12, & F13.  F10 said it was 50 amp on line, but it was 30 amp with a breaker that had two 20 amp 110 plugs.  It is a beautiful campground, but the government is letting it get rundown.  The bath house in our loop didn't have a shower.  A hassle trying to load up the kids to go find a shower for my friends.  I used my in camper shower.  The water faucets are getting so old and they leak so it's hard to get a hose on for water.  Around the campsites have grown up with brush and weeds worse than I have ever seen.  We were constantly  picking off tiny ticks, they were everywhere.  All three of us got ants in our campers and 2 of us got mice.  I know, all part of nature, but we don't experience that at Twin Knobs (across the lake).  The bugs were so bad that we couldn't turn any lights on at night.  The paths that lead down to the lake were overgrown.  We ended up just driving down to the beach or ramp.  There are a few projects that US Forestry could spend some money on that would make it a lot nicer over there.  Memories of how nice it was over there 20 years ago make it sad to see it now.  My campsite smelled so bad for the first 2 days that I went searching for the cause.  There was a dead (very rotten) snake that had been covered up with leaves at the edge of my campsite.  I got gloves on and cleaned it up in order to be able to be outside.  The one good thing is that the dump station had good pressure.  Remember the sites are very short, so know how long the site is if you are bringing anything over 30 feet.  No cell service, which could be nice, but we were unaware of a bad storm that hit us.  It is a very quite place though.

Guide to Stout

Campgrounds in the Stout, Ohio area offer water activities along the Ohio River and Licking River, with elevation ranging from 500-1,000 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall provide cooler camping conditions in the 60-70°F range. The region's campgrounds often experience seasonal closures during winter months from November through March.

What to do

River recreation: The Licking River provides opportunities for beginning kayakers with shuttle services available. At The Ole Cornfield, "there is access to the river for those who wish to kayak. Beautiful place!" The water is "about 1 to 2 feet deep at this location. Great for wading and catching minnows, crawdads, and such."

Cave exploration: Visit underground formations at Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground where "the caves are absolutely amazing and the park has some of the best natural bridges I have ever seen. Make sure to get a permit for Horn Hollow on a day of no rain or else you will not be able to enter it."

Disc golf: The 18-hole course at Shawnee State Park provides a recreational option for campers of all skill levels. "Just a beautiful park. Clean well maintained. Lots of amenities. Paddle boats, marina, 18 hole disc golf, bike park, huge dog park, store, archery range, playground and trails."

What campers like

Quiet atmosphere: Many campgrounds prioritize peaceful settings. At Valley Breeze RV Campground, "the folks that run this RV park are very nice and obviously have a lot of pride in their place. Valley Breeze is very well kept and clean."

Outdoor water features: The Oasis Point RV Resort & Adventure Lake offers unique water amenities beyond standard pools. "On the other side of the lake there is a large water slide and a zip line that both end in the water. There is a smaller pond for fishing, I'm pretty sure it's catch and release."

Technology breaks: Limited connectivity encourages family interaction at many rv campgrounds near Stout, Ohio. At Long's Retreat Family Resort, "best part is there is no phone service.....everyone has to actually spend time together and it's a great reset!"

What you should know

Site spacing varies: Campground layouts differ significantly in the area. At Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground, "the campground was busy, but scouts enjoy that. Various levels of cabin experience at a reasonable cost. Lots of hiking, fairly well marked."

Water hookup distances: Be prepared with extra equipment at some locations. "You will need extra water hose and extension cords to get hooked up in a lot of the sites."

Limited cell coverage: Many Stout, Ohio RV campgrounds have minimal connectivity. At Shawnee State Park Campground, "there is absolutely no cell service in the Campground. The lodge at the top of the hill has a weak signal, but is better than nothing if you really need to check in with outside world."

Seasonal restrictions: Check operating dates before planning trips, especially at private campgrounds. "We went to the office, asked for 4 nights, I have a 2021 travel trailer. He said 'overnight only'."

Tips for camping with families

Hidden tent sites: Seek out more secluded spots for tent camping. "The Shawnee campground has some features that are nicer than what is found in many state campgrounds. There are some secluded sites back in the woods, so you don't feel like you are camping in a parking lot in a few places. NOTE that most of these secluded sites (along the back edge of the campground) are up a flight of stairs."

Kid-friendly activities: Lazy Village Campground & RV Park offers unique history features. "This is a really cool campground because it's situated on an old racetrack. Check out the website for details on the full hookup sites."

Themed events: Look for special weekend programming during peak seasons. "We were there on their Halloween weekend, with a fun site-decorating contest and trick or treat in the afternoon, which was mildly annoying for us because they closed the roads from 2 to 6 so we could not drive back to our site."

Tips from RVers

Variable site lengths: Confirm exact measurements when booking at Stout, Ohio RV campgrounds. "We were told that the site we'd been assigned was room enough for 52'. Our RV is only 34' so that would be more than enough. We got there and it was maybe 20-24" in length, with no wiggle room because one end was the park road/driveway, the other end a hill."

Assistance availability: Some parks offer additional services beyond standard amenities. At Sheltowee RV Park & Cabins, "the campground is very well maintained. It's quiet and tucked away. Nature trails, ponds for relaxing and watching the wildlife or fishing."

Setup help: Staff assistance can make arrival easier. At The Ole Cornfield, "when you arrive the host (Justin), brings you wood and a picnic table. Helps if you need anything. The campground is always extremely clean as are the bathrooms."
