    Forked Run State Park Campground

Dirty pit toilets. Dirty sinks. Beautiful lake.

This state park has a beautiful lake and a nice beach. There are boat rentals and a frisbee golf course. Overall, this part of the park is beautiful.

The campgrounds, however, leave a lot to be desired. The people were really nice, but the facilities were terrible. The pit toilets were filthy- covered in flies, spiderwebs and dirt. They look like they have not been hosed out since the 70's. The showers and sinks are in an old, old building- it could be fine if it were cleaned daily, but it was filthy too. I was there 3 days and the showers and sinks were never cleaned. They were pretty gross from the start, but then by Saturday night one shower housed a pile of feces. No kidding. Poop in the shower.

We stayed in the camper cabin, which is just a very basic shed with a bed, bunk beds, air conditioning and heat. We stayed there because it was July and I wanted A/C and electricity. The cabin smelled like mold.

I'd go back to this lake but will not stay in the campgrounds again.

    Tar Hollow State Park Campground

    Memorial Weekend 2020

After being cooped up, we (3 young adults) decided to get out and decided on this campground that was new to all of us. The campground was very low key and made for an easy going weekend! We weren’t too keen on most of the parks amenities, but enjoyed just sitting around the fire the whole time. Pros: -staff was cleaning common areas (bathroom and showers) either once or twice a day -campsite 12 was incredible space and had an added bonus of a deck structure over the creek

Other notes: -WiFi available, but only right by the main office/general store -no service for AT&T or Verizon -Fire tower not accessible -Lake tested high for a bacteria and swimming is not recommended

Corona Virus Notes: -only Ice and Firewood available for purchase at General Store -putt putt, boat and bike rentals, and game box rentals not available -nearby Hocking Hills trails were closed

    Jackson Lake Park

    Campground with Water Park

I stayed at this campground because they hosted a wedding I attended. I chose to stay in a cabin, which was pretty pricy for what it was. for $175, it was a basic cabin with a queen bed and 2 twin bunk-beds, a very small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and mini-fridge. The cabin was somewhat dirty - dust on the floor and spider webs in the corner. It had no bed linens, or towels, and the bathroom didn't even have a mirror.

There is a "lake" (more of a large pond) on the property, with fishing, and large inflatables to play on in the summer. There is also a disc golf course. The nearby town Lithopolis is cute, with some local coffee and dining, as well as antique shops.

    Top O' The Caves Campground

    Great Campground for everyone

This Campground was pretty great! My wife and I stayed in a rather large tent site and my parents stayed in an RV site. The RV site was rather small without much personal space. But it worked for what they needed. The tent site was decently secluded and near a nice small pond.

The campground put on a free BBQ for all of the guests one of the nights! It was very good and well thought out. They also put on a very long firework show that night which was awesome! We must have came the perfect weekend.

The restrooms were rather large and and worked fine. As well as the showers. There are also a few nice looking cabins! There is a camp store in the office, but it's rather small without anything interesting. There is a large barn with a few arcade games that the kids seemed to like.

The best part about this Campground?? DOGS ARE ALLOWED!! We were so grateful of this because we love taking our dog camping with us!

    Lake Hope State Park Campground

Great spot for getting prepared for zaleski and going kayaking

Several campsites are on a slope so this calls for being creative with placement of tent.
Firewood available for purchase on site. Lake Hope lodge provides great warm and dry spot for delicious food.

Several activities available, fishing available anywhere on the lake, kayak rental for $10 and good size lake.

Very clean pit toliets and running water available dispersed throughout the park. Several hiking trails, zaleski is nearby, hocking hills is 30 minutes away. Moonville tunnel and iron furnace in the area.

    Oak Hill - Lake Vesuvius

    Well Maintained Sites

Paved, well maintained sites but a bit close together. Don’t expect privacy if it’s booked. Reservations close 4 days prior, after that it’s first come, first serve. However, surprisingly very quiet during my visit. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and water & electric hookups. Cannot comment on the showers because no running water at the time of my visit (water line break, scheduled for repairs).

    Burr Oak State Park Campground

    Beautiful but questionable design.

We stayed down at the "lake" spots which are not on the lake but quite above it. Our first site was #19, we were even hesitant to park our 23ft camper in it, but we did and then realized that as soon as we try to get in or out of the camper, it was a steep drop down 5ft. All the sites around this part were steep and tents were pitched on hillsides and most people only stayed for 1 night. We moved to a flatter spot but still had some fun fanagaling the camper in it. Very quiet campground during the week but as soon as Friday hits, it's crazy and loud. We had some neighbors who didn't respect the Quiet hours starting at 10pm and were told very nicely by the Park Ranger and still made a huge fuss. Glad we only stayed for 2 nights.

    Burr Oak State Park Campground

    What You Make Of It

Luxurious accommodations and continental breakfasts won’t be found here…..a space to unwind and reflect will. The sites are sloped and ill paved but the sights, the sights are quintessential Southeast Ohio. Rolling hills dotted with little burgs where the oil has dried up but the resolve has yet to. A slight traverse down the hill lends views normally reserved for travel mags and postcards if just a bit of adventure is employed.

Guide to Ray

Camping options near Ray, Ohio span across the foothills of the Appalachian region with elevation changes creating diverse terrain for tent sites. The area receives moderate rainfall throughout the year, making site drainage an important consideration, particularly at hillside locations like Tar Hollow's North Ridge campground. Primitive and developed campsites offer varying levels of accessibility throughout the region.

What to do

Hiking trail navigation: At Tar Hollow State Park Campground, trails require careful attention to markings. "Trails are not marked well. Thankfully we were not doing a backpacking trip. Beware if you are. We have heard some frustrating on the trail markings. Part of the Buckeye Trail runs through the park," notes one camper.

Fishing opportunities: Pine Lake at Tar Hollow provides fishing access with limited competition during off-peak times. "Pine lake is a beautiful little spot to fish, rent a paddle boat, or just relax," according to one visitor who found the smaller lake size ideal for casual fishing outings.

Water recreation: Lake Hope State Park Campground offers diverse water activities beyond swimming. "At lake hope you can enjoy camping in many ways... Very nice beach and swimming area. Hiking and horse back riding trails. Canoe/kayak rental," writes a camper who appreciated the range of options.

Paddling experiences: Waters Edge Canoe Livery provides creek access for kayak and canoe trips. "Very fun place to camp and enjoy the creek on a kayak or canoe. Very friendly staff, and one of my favorite places to go," according to a visitor who found the waterway suitable for beginners.

What campers like

Secluded tent sites: Top O' The Caves Campground offers tent camping with direct trail access to regional attractions. "You can walk to ash cave from your campsite! There is a connecting trail right at the front of the campground. It was a fairly simple hike too," writes a camper who appreciated the convenience.

Wildlife viewing: Primitive campers at Tar Hollow can spot diverse wildlife including protected species. "They also have a thriving Timber Rattlesnake population. Watch your steps," warns one visitor, highlighting the importance of wildlife awareness while hiking.

Digital disconnection: The limited connectivity provides enforced relaxation for many campers. "There is no cell service. Enjoy the outdoors! You are off the grid!" notes one camper about Tar Hollow. Another mentions about Long's Retreat: "Best part is there is no phone service.....everyone has to actually spend time together and it's a great reset!"

Family activities: Long's Retreat Family Resort offers extensive recreation options beyond standard camping. "Swimming, water slides, canoeing, go-cart racing, mini golf, and a full arcade give plenty of variety. Of course, relaxing by the campfire, grilling hot dogs and making s'mores is really what makes the time with the kids special," shares a return visitor.

What you should know

Site terrain challenges: Many campgrounds in the region feature sloped sites requiring careful tent placement. At Burr Oak State Park Campground, "Our site #14 was very hilly but at least it had a tent pad at the bottom of the hill so it was flat where we were sleeping," notes one camper.

Seasonal considerations: Heavy rain can impact camping conditions at certain sites. At Top O' The Caves, "Beware of parking down there if its raining or you expect rain. There were a lot of people, from cars to trucks, that got stuck down that little hill and had to be towed out!"

Bathroom facilities: Campground bathrooms vary widely across the region. At Tar Hollow's tent-only area, "The bathrooms are pit latrines. Normally, I wouldn't be too concerned about this... However…these are some of the dirtiest I've experienced... they are not lit, so you have to make sure you bring your headlamp with you at night."

Yurt camping options: Yurt camping near Ray, Ohio is available at select campgrounds as an alternative to traditional tent or cabin options. Waters Edge Canoe Livery offers yurt accommodations for those seeking structure without sacrificing the camping experience.

Tips for camping with families

Game amenities: Hocking Hills KOA Holiday offers numerous family-friendly activities on-site. "The KOA had a lot of amenities to offer... The pool was wonderful, the bathroom was clean and spacious. The camp store has everything you may need with a Walmart 10 minutes down the road," shares a family who stayed for an extended trip.

Nature programs: Burr Oak offers educational opportunities for children. "In past years we've been able to spend an hour or so at the nature rooms, and then let the kids go off with the naturalist on an hour+ guided hike down the creek to explore for wildlife and plants," reports a camper with children.

Noise considerations: Site selection impacts your family sleep quality. At Tar Hollow North Ridge, "You are right next to your camping neighbors. I have terrible luck and ended up staying next to a very inconsiderate and loud group that included their many dogs... You can hear snoring and other 'nighttime' noises so just be aware others can and will hear you."

Yurt camping for families: When considering yurt camping in Ray, Ohio with children, look for locations with additional amenities. Top O' The Caves combines structured accommodation options with recreation facilities like mini-golf and arcade games that appeal to younger campers.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Prepare for uneven terrain throughout the region. At Lake Hope, "Camp sites are very small and very unlevel, had to raise back of camper and put front about a 1/4" off ground to get close to level. Site around is sloped in all directions."

Access roads: Some campgrounds have challenging approach roads requiring careful driving. For the Hocking Hills KOA, "The little road going up to the campground is VERY bumpy. It's not the campground road, it belongs to the Township, so its completely out of their ability to make improvements."

Hookup availability: While electric sites are common, full hookups are limited in state parks. "It is a state park, so there are some things aimed at kids and there were lots of kids this past week running around looking busy and happy (even the teenagers). The lake has a sand beach and designated swim area," notes a Burr Oak visitor.

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the region operate from spring through fall with limited winter accessibility. Hilltop Resorts offers extended season camping with water and electric sites available for late season visitors exploring the Hocking Hills area.
