Free WIFI available and able to connect at campsite

Basically the FHU loops are out in a field…no privacy from neighbors and no shade what so ever

Grass around sites desperately needed mowed, if you could get thru the large mud puddles

FHU loop D has narrow roads and require driving on grass to back in trailer and some campers in other sites had to move their vehicles

Damn Canadian Geese poop every...what a mess!

Site number on electric utility box

FHU sewer connection at the back of the campsite so bring the looooong stinky slinky FHU loop D had tiny toilet building, but no showers; showers were in non-FHU loops

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Cozy

Some of the sites are small so you have to be careful which you site you reserve if you’re a tent camper. The outside of the circle is your best bet and there’s a few scattered in the middle. If you can get a good middle spot it’s nice if you have kids since there’s a playground, swings, basketball, and tether court. No running water for bathrooms if that’s important for you. The park is also just off a country road so traffic can occasionally be heard but it’s not excessive. Grounds are very well maintained and the hosts were very nice.

    Nice little weekend getaway

    Wapakoneta KOA

    Impressive!

Super clean KOA with level gravel sites (no weeds popping up through gravel!) 2 Fenced dog areas, nice playground, game room, giant chess set outside, clean pool.. you name it, this KOA has it! I was impressed when Mike helped me back into my site.. it had a little wooden deck with a picnic table (I did not request nor pay extra for this perk!) I noticed something that I've not seen at other campgrounds: each of the waste connection covers had a 'fake' rock over the top. Very clever! The KOA is very tidy and well kept.

Nice folks here. I would highly recommend it!

    Wapakoneta KOA

    Nice Campground

Great service and help getting the trailer positioned correctly. A few food options on site are nice. The actual sites are very small. Not much room to fit the trailer and vehicle. Basically the site is as wide as your awning.

Grand Lake St. Marys State Park — Grand Lake St Marys State Park

Campground is fine but the lake reeks of POO

First the good: the campground is big and spacious. Some areas were like RV parking lots- no trees, no shade, but there was a grassy area in the middle with nice big trees and shade. There is a nice pool and splash pad. Weirdly, the pool closed from 4 to 5, leaving us with nowhere to go on a 90+ degree day.

Now, the not-so-good: we stayed in a camper cabin and it was very shabby and dirty. It had bunkbeds, a full size fridge, and a folding table and folding chairs, which was nice (and rare in Ohio state park camper cabins). The bathrooms were average. Not new, not especially sparkling clean, but fine. Not gross, at least.

Now, the terrible: the entire lake stinks of pig poop. All the air smells like poo. You feel like you are breathing feces when you approach the water. We were right on the water so we couldn't escape the smell.

This lake is notorious for having algae blooms that prohibit swimming. So I did a google search before our trip and the Ohio Department of Health reports that the bacteria level in this lake is dangerously high, and no one should swim in this lake. However, when we walked to the campground beach, there was no sign or warning or anything indicating the bacteria in the water- and people were letting their children and dogs swim in it!!

We opted to not kayak or paddleboard in the lake because it was clear that it was full of poop. So we had nothing to do at the park except go to the pool (it was too hot to do anything else). We ended up driving around the country roads and seeing the sights so we could escape the smelly lake and hot poo fumes. Neil Armstrong was born in nearby Wapakoneta so there are some sights to see there, and the towns of Celina and ? one other are cute too.

Overall, I will not return to this lake or this part of the state. If you can't get in the water, paddle board or kayak, the only thing left to do is ride around in a boat and hope the water doesn't get anywhere near your mouth or your skin. No thanks.

    Adventure Bound Camping & Cabins

    Wagner Subscriber Campout

This park has lots of seasonal sites and it’s set up nice for large group camping. We visited this park as a group camping event hosted by the Wandering Wagners and it was a nice location for this event. If we were camping there just for the weekend there is not much to do in the way of hiking or exploring. They have a small swimming area and a bound pad for kids. Van Buren state park is within walking distance so we spent time there playing disc golf and geocaching.

Guide to Lima

Glamping options near Lima, Ohio range from lakefront safari tents to canvas cabins with modern amenities. The region sits at approximately 900 feet above sea level in western Ohio's flat terrain, with summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F. Camping areas around Lima don't feature significant elevation changes, but several are positioned near bodies of water that create opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming activities from April through October.

What to do

Disc golf at Van Buren State Park: The park features an 18-hole course accessible year-round. Van Buren offers a unique winter experience for outdoor enthusiasts. "I came cross country skiing here in early January and it was absolutely amazing. It is cold but the terrain is simple for first time skiers," notes one visitor.

Geocaching adventures: Van Buren State Park and surrounding recreation areas offer multiple geocaching opportunities. "We spent time there playing disc golf and geocaching," mentions a camper who stayed at Adventure Bound Camping & Cabins.

Swimming pools as lake alternatives: Many campgrounds maintain swimming pools when lake conditions aren't suitable. At Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, "the campground has a pool, playground, putt putt golf, boat docks, hiking trails, and some other great amenities," according to a camper who rated the facilities highly.

Miniature golf and family games: Multiple campgrounds feature mini-golf courses and outdoor game areas. One visitor to Wapakoneta KOA noted the "pool, pool table, games for kids and adults" among the amenities that made their stay enjoyable.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the generous site dimensions at certain parks. "Large spacious sites with cement or paved spots. Can be muddy after rain," reports a visitor to Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, which offers full hookup options.

Recreational variety: Indian Lake State Park Campground provides multiple recreation options. "There is a camper beach area, swimming pool and boat launch within the campground," shares one reviewer who particularly enjoyed the water activities available onsite.

Kid-friendly amenities: Parents appreciate dedicated children's areas at campgrounds. A visitor to Van Buren State Park Campground shared: "Kids loved having the playground so close to the camper," highlighting the convenience of family camping at this location.

Quiet camping options: For those seeking a more peaceful glamping experience near Lima, Riverbend Recreation Area offers tranquility. "If good time away with peace quit and wonderful natural views then this spot will work perfectly," notes a camper who appreciated the natural setting.

What you should know

Tent site limitations: Some campgrounds have limited dedicated tent camping areas. At Indian Lake, "The campground had cut down most of the tree coverage, and it was like we were camping with our neighbors," reports a tent camper who felt the sites lacked privacy.

Seasonal limitations: Most glamping accommodations close between late October and early April. Wapakoneta KOA's season typically runs "from 3/12 to 10/31," limiting winter glamping options near Lima.

Water quality concerns: Huggy Bear Campground and other sites with water features may have seasonal water quality issues. At Grand Lake St. Marys, "the entire lake stinks of pig poop. All the air smells like poo," warns a recent visitor who was disappointed by the water conditions during their stay.

Bathroom facilities vary: Not all parks offer shower facilities. At Van Buren State Park, "There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don't think I'd want to do more than a weekend there," advises a camper who found the facilities adequate for short stays.

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: Request sites near playgrounds when traveling with children. A Van Buren camper noted, "It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden."

Seasonal programs: Many campgrounds offer structured activities during peak season. Indian Lake State Park is "definitely a campground for families and for those who want lots of company in there experience... Lots of activities for kids and families and even movies and music on the weekend," shares a visitor.

Pool schedules: Check swimming facility hours before planning your day. One Grand Lake St. Marys visitor noted, "Weirdly, the pool closed from 4 to 5, leaving us with nowhere to go on a 90+ degree day," highlighting the importance of planning around scheduled closures.

Weekend atmosphere differences: Riverbend Recreation Area Campground and other sites may have different vibes on weekends versus weekdays. "It's not going to win any excitement prizes but if good time away with peace quit and wonderful natural views then this spot will work perfectly," notes one camper about the quieter atmosphere.

Tips from RVers

Level sites: Many Lima-area campgrounds feature recently improved pads. At Van Buren State Park, "The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end," reports a satisfied RVer.

Hookup testing: Check electrical connections upon arrival. At Van Buren, "Electric did not work at all sites," warns a camper who experienced issues with site utilities.

Camp store hours: Note operating hours for camp stores when planning supply runs. Heritage Springs Campground offers "good water and 30 Amp connection" according to a reviewer who appreciated the reliable utilities during their stay.

Pull-through limitations: Some areas have cramped pull-through sections. At Grand Lake St. Marys, "The pull through area is very cramped; more like a parking lot," cautions an RVer who found the layout challenging.
