Best Equestrian Camping near Dellroy, OH

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Jefferson Lake State Park Campground offers equestrian camping options with dedicated horse sites. The campground features both standard and electric equestrian sites, though electric hookups may be positioned some distance from the pad, potentially requiring extension cords. The facility includes 18 miles of multi-use trails suitable for horseback riding. Vault toilets are cleaned daily according to visitors, and the campground maintains a peaceful atmosphere due to its smaller size and remote location.

Located in southeastern Ohio, the equestrian sites at Jefferson Lake provide adequate space for horses and trailers. The horse trails connect to various natural features including the lake, dam, and nearby creek areas. Water access points include non-potable water spigots that are not threaded, which can make filling tanks challenging. The campground's terrain varies significantly with some sites situated on hills that may be unsuitable for tent camping. Horse enthusiasts should note that no showers are available despite outdated information on some websites, and cell service through AT&T provides reliable 5G coverage with three bars of signal. Visitors should bring all necessary supplies as restaurants and grocery stores are limited in the immediate area.

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    Park is Great, Campsites Suck!

Stayed here in the “primitive” camp. You are basically staying with your neighbors in small cleared areas where you can see everything everyone else is doing and if you have one of the sites nearer to the parking areas, you will have people walking through your campsite all day and night from the ones in the rear. From what I saw, the electric sites in the main campground aren’t much better. I mean this is a midwestern state park camping experience for sure. If you’re expecting any amount of privacy, think again.

The lake is pretty beautiful. The trails are well marked and the horse trails go on for miles and miles so if you have horses this is a great place to trail ride and if you’re a hiker who is not afraid of horses, you can always enjoy the equestrian trails for some serious mileage!

    Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet little campground

Tucked away in southeastern Ohio is a gem of a park for camping, hiking and horse camping. Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails! Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy! Only a few electric sites available. Mostly flat shaded sites most perfect for tents or trailers.

    Great Campground

Lots of great sites to pick from, lots of loops, shady sites , secluded sites, handicap sites and more. We go at least once a year for the Ohio Bigfoot Conference which draws people from all over the country. The bathrooms are good, the shower houses are good and the campground store has anything you may have forgotten. Friendly staff, hiking trails, boating and more. They have horse camping and trails further down the road and a primitive loop on Bigfoot Ridge. So much to see and do a weekend isn't long enough.

    Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet and Beautiful

This smaller campground has a mix of equestrian sites and tent/RV sites. There are no showers, but the vault toilets were cleaned thoroughly ever morning. You need to be careful when booking, especially if you are trying to pitch a tent, as some sites are quite sloped. Our site was huge and right next to the water spigot.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Equine Camping

I loved to camp in the Horse camping area but this year they are allowing tent campers to camp there and it is just not safe.  There are multiple tents, sometimes in between horse campers.  There are children running around and since this in the back of the campground with no supervision, the campers are leaving garbage at the sites and in the fire pits.

There are two camp hosts in that area and they do the best they can to educate people on horses but most do not understand they were even booked in the horse camp nor do they understand that horses can spook.

The hosts are trying to clean up after these bad campers and reporting them but there does not seem to be anything they can do. They would never allow this kind of thing to happen in the main campground.

If the campers are allowed to camp in the horse camp then the horse campers should be allowed in the main camp.  I sure would  like a full hook up with electricity and water for my horse trailer.

Whats fair is fair.  Why even designate a section just for Horse campers if you are going to allow primitive campers to camp there.

Last year there may have been one or two tents here and there through out the season but this year the tent campers outnumber the horse campers.

The facility provides both standard and electric equestrian sites, though extension cords may be needed as hookups can be located some distance from the pad. Visitors appreciate the daily cleaned vault toilets and the quiet atmosphere created by the campground's smaller size and remote setting.

What to do

Trail riding opportunities: At Salt Fork State Park Campground, equestrian enthusiasts can explore extensive riding trails. "Just driving in saw turkeys and 'turkets':) and two 6 point bucks. You can hike, swim, boat, bike and horseback ride," notes one visitor, highlighting the wildlife viewing potential while on horseback trails.

Fishing access: Multiple lakes and creeks provide fishing opportunities around Dellroy. A camper at West Branch State Park shares: "We also took the inflatable kayaks out on the lake twice and it was so smooth and clear." The fishing areas near beaver creek are productive for bass fishing according to one visitor who reported, "Bass fishing is really fun because we caught a few nice ones!!"

Historical exploration: Visit the pioneer village near Beaver Creek State Park for a glimpse into Ohio's past. "The best part about the area was the history that surrounds it. There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it. It also has original buildings from the pioneer days (church, school, etc)," explains one camper who enjoyed the historical aspects.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Visitors to West Branch State Park Campground frequently mention the cleanliness of the facilities. "The shower house and bathrooms are large and clean. There is even a book exchange shelf at the shower house in case of rainy days," writes one satisfied camper, showing the attention to maintenance.

Spacious sites: Many equestrian campgrounds near Dellroy feature well-sized camping areas. A visitor to Beaver Creek State Park Campground wrote, "We camped this past weekend in site 50. It is an unbelievably spacious site under towering pine trees. The site sits back off the road and really makes you feel like you have the place to yourself."

Water recreation: Lakes and waterways are a major attraction. "Great site! Shades lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access," explains a camper at West Branch, highlighting how some sites offer direct water access for boats and fishing.

What you should know

Site terrain challenges: Many campgrounds in the region have uneven terrain that requires planning. "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," reports a camper at West Branch, indicating the importance of leveling equipment.

Limited amenities at some locations: Hidden Hollow Campground — Fernwood State Forest offers free camping but with basic facilities. "Pit toilets and no source of safe, clean water anymore. Very quiet everytime I've camped there, many times btw," notes one regular visitor, highlighting the need to bring your own water.

Seasonal considerations: Water levels fluctuate throughout the year affecting recreation. At Beaver Creek, one visitor mentioned, "Kayaking is also very popular among the creek, but the water was too low this time. If I were to go back I would definitely kayaking if the water is at the right level."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly campgrounds: Canton-East Sparta KOA receives praise for family accommodations. "This is our favorite KOA! I have 4 kids and return at least 1x per year. Great family owned KOA. Horseback riding on site," shares a repeat visitor, highlighting activities suitable for children.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. One visitor to Beaver Creek State Park mentioned, "We got a site near the playground, which my 3 year old enjoyed. The campground wasn't busy and we had a lot of privacy."

Evening activities: Stargazing opportunities abound in the less light-polluted areas. "The sky was dark enough to see far more stars than you'd see near any larger towns or cities. To cap it off, we laid in our tent dozing off to the sounds of owls and coyotes!" reports a family at Beaver Creek, showing how natural experiences can enhance a family camping trip.

Tips from RVers

Hookup locations: Electric connections at equestrian campgrounds may require planning. "Only 5 electric sites. Very clean pit toilets. Well maintained campground. A few equine sites. Only 2 electric eq sites. Electric is a little far behind pad. We almost needed extension cord," reports an RVer at Jefferson Lake.

Water access considerations: RV campers should plan for water needs carefully. At Hidden Hollow Campground, one camper advised, "Self-register with cards located at pit latrine building. 14 days every 30. No problem getting 40' skoolie in and parked in mostly level spots. 🚱 hand pump available, grey water pits and trash cans available."

Road access limitations: Some parks have roads unsuitable for larger vehicles. A camper at Beaver Creek warns, "Also, there is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!"
