    Delaware State Park Campground

    Lots of shade and mosquitoes

We stayed in site 174 on the farthest loop from the entrance. This site provided full shade all day long. The pad was pretty even so not a lot of leveling to do for our a-frame camper. The pad was easy to back in to and we had plenty of room to pull our truck forward. The site has 30 amp and 50 amp and our 30 amp was not working. We notified the park staff and they responded quickly to come out and fix it. The site had a great fire ring and lots of space for chairs, an ez-up, pop-up bathroom tent off to the side and it probably could have held 1-2 tents. There were trees close enough to set up 1-2 hammocks as well. The park staff came out it seemed to be every 3 hours to spray the water fountain in the middle of the turn around. There is a showerhouse in the middle of the loop, not a far walk or you could drive as there were a few parking spots nearby. The showerhouse had plenty of flush toilets and sinks. There were three showers that had doors, but it was just one space and no bench inside your stall. There were plenty of hooks, but you could get your items wet if you weren't careful. There is a bench outside of your stall and there is a curtain that separates you from the toilets and sinks. Not the greatest changing area if you are shy. You could tell it was the weekend as the bathrooms were a little messy, but I've seen way worse. There are also two dumpsters outside the showerhouse for trash. Watch out for the masked bandits (raccoons). They were not shy at all and we had to chase them off from our campsite. Do not leave out any food or trash, they will get into it. There are lots of trails (we found a lot of mushrooms!), a beach, playgrounds and a frisbee golf course. The mosquitoes were really bad this weekend, but we had been there last year and didn't have any issues.

Nice park but some traffic noise

Spent three nights here while we were visiting friends in Lewis Center. We stayed in F09 and it was a great spot. Lots of protection on both sides so it was very secluded. And close to the shower house. Only reason I didn’t give this five stars was there was still quite a bit of traffic noise around the park that you could hear. Some nice hiking trails as well. Campsite was nice and level. Showers were super clean and awesome water pressure.

    Delaware State Park Campground

    Nice Ohio State Park

This state park spans over 2,000 acres and is just north of the cute Ohio town of Delaware. We stayed here for two nights while visiting friends in the area but wished we would have stayed to enjoy all that the park had to offer. The campground was really nice and quiet when we stayed there which was during the week and in the spring and not very crowded. We can imagine that this park is pretty full in the summer with all their amenities and close proximity to major Ohio cities.

The 'pod' layout of the campground made for large campsites (some sites are over 90 feet in length and well suited for large RV’s) with good separation between sites. There are 212 sites that have 50 amp electric. The campground also has yurts for rent (May through October) that are furnished with beds, table and chairs, a cooler, ceiling fan, outdoor charcoal grill and a picnic table with canopy. This is a great option for those wanting to stay in something more than a tent but don’t have an RV.

There is no sewer or water at individual sites but there is a dump station and water fill station near the park entrance. Roads and campsites are paved with grassy patios that feature picnic tables and fire pits. The park does not provide wifi but our Verizon hotspot and 4G phone worked well. There are centrally located bath/shower houses with coin-operated laundry facilities.

The park is open year-round and great for outdoor activities; especially, those that are water-related. There are numerous boat launches, fully equipped marina, and swimming area. We launched our kayaks and had a great time paddling around the lake.  Be aware that there is no horsepower limits for boats on the lake and weekends are very popular for anglers in high-powered bass boats. The northern portion of the lake is a “no wake zone” which makes for a more pleasant paddling environment.  If you don’t have a boat, boat rentals are available at the marina.

For those wanting to hike there are plenty of hiking/biking trails for you to get out and explore the park.  Many of the trails link together so you can decide how long you want to hike. The Lakeview Trail was perfect for us as our dog loved jumping in the water during our hike. Other amenities in the park include a nature center, 18-hole disk golf, hunting, archery, volleyball, horse shoe pits, picnic areas, and an 800-foot designated swimming area.  At the camp store/office you can rent bikes as well as other sporting equipment.

If you decide to venture out of the park you are only about 40 miles from downtown Columbus and less than 20 miles to the world-renowned Columbus Zoo (which is definitely worth a visit). The nearby town of Delaware is really nice with downtown shopping, restaurants, a historic theater and brewery (Stass Brewing Company has great Belgian-style beer with a fun atmosphere).

Would definitely camp here again if we were in the area.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    A Wonderful State Park

First off we have to say that Ohio State Park campgrounds are some of the best we’ve ever stayed in. Most Ohio state park campgrounds have spacious sites with trees or other foliage between campsites so lots of privacy and a feeling of being apart from other campers. Alum Creek is no different. The ODNR has upgraded a number of the sites to FHU though most are still electric only. Alum Creek Lake is a large reservoir (by Ohio standards) that has excellent fishing, plenty of undeveloped shoreline to explore from kayaks, canoes or paddle boards and a very large beach. Not as many hiking trails as most state parks but you’re not far from High Banks Metro Park in Lewis Center that is a beautiful park with miles of trails along the Olentangy River. We love Alum Creek and will stay again for sure.

    Jackson Lake Park

    Campground with Water Park

I stayed at this campground because they hosted a wedding I attended. I chose to stay in a cabin, which was pretty pricy for what it was. for $175, it was a basic cabin with a queen bed and 2 twin bunk-beds, a very small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and mini-fridge. The cabin was somewhat dirty - dust on the floor and spider webs in the corner. It had no bed linens, or towels, and the bathroom didn't even have a mirror.

There is a "lake" (more of a large pond) on the property, with fishing, and large inflatables to play on in the summer. There is also a disc golf course. The nearby town Lithopolis is cute, with some local coffee and dining, as well as antique shops.

    Alum Creek State Park

This is a huge campground! I tent camped by myself--felt very safe.  Happened to be next to the park host. No choice of where to locate my large tent.  Showers/bathrooms were OK--older facilities.  Wish this park had a laundry facility--another Ohio park I recently stayed at had a fairly new shower facility that included a laundry facility!  Did not appreciate the waste management company emptying the dumpsters at 4:00 AM!!!  There is a huge, lakeside beach that was just packed with people (no social distancing) and there was trash everywhere--not enough dumpsters.  Near to shopping (Polaris), if you are interested.  Will try to get a lakeside site next time.

    Nice quiet place

Large, private sites, good electric service, reasonable distance to Columbus. I was confused about no on-site office, self check in. Lake is beautiful. Bathrooms are decent.

    Buck Creek State Park Campground

    Leaves some to be desired

It's easy to get there. The non-electric sites don't have a lot of space or privacy (ie; trees) between them, definitely no hammocking. There's also a private camper's beach that is absolutely serene, probably not safe to swim in. Due to it being a holiday weekend, it was busy & loud like you'd expect, but it was so rowdy we left early. When we showed up, someone dumped all their trash in our firepit, absolutely disgusting behavior. Two different camp groups, one in electric and one in non-electric, got into loud verbal fights that resulted in the police being called. Fireworks and loud music were played all night long. No quiet hours, or if there are any they're not enforced. It's still great for a night visit if you're in the area, but it's not a dream weekend getaway by any means.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Fall Delight

This was a great experience! Nice, flat campsites, running water and flush toilets. I believe all sites are electric and we brought a projector/screen to watch some movies.

This campground is usually super booked but noise level was not an issue.

We stayed at site J24 and the only down fall was that the fire ring did not have a grate.

Guide to Lewis Center

Camping options near Lewis Center, Ohio range from basic tent sites to premium accommodations with water access. Situated in central Ohio at approximately 900 feet elevation, the area experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 85°F from June through August and cold winters that can drop below freezing. Campgrounds typically remain open from April through October, with some facilities offering limited winter camping options.

What to do

Hiking opportunities: Buck Creek State Park Campground offers trails ranging from beginner to intermediate difficulty levels. "There are nice trails to walk and the bathrooms are the best I've seen at a campground. They have bathrooms and a water fountain," notes Sarah W., who enjoyed the park's fishing areas.

Mountain biking trails: Alum Creek State Park Campground features dedicated mountain biking paths through wooded terrain. "There's a great mountain biking trail in the vicinity. The camp sites are spacious and private, surrounded by trees and brush," shares Catherine, who recommends reserving well in advance for choice waterfront sites.

Disc golf course: Jackson Lake Park includes an 18-hole disc golf course that winds through both open and wooded sections. The course provides players with varied terrain challenges and is accessible year-round. "There is also a disc golf course," confirms a reviewer who appreciated the park's multiple recreational options beyond water activities.

What campers like

Spacious, private sites: Delaware State Park Campground receives praise for its site layout and privacy. "What I liked most about this park is that all the sites have privacy. There are nice trails to walk and the bathrooms are the best I've seen at a campground," says Maddy B., who camped there in early October.

Storm shelters for safety: Delaware State Park maintains well-marked storm shelters accessible from all camping areas. "I also noticed that they had a nice storm shelter on the property that was well marked and easy to get to from any of the campground areas," reports Marshall P., highlighting the park's safety considerations.

Year-round availability: Certain sites at Cardinal Center Campground remain open during winter months, making it a reliable option for off-season camping near Lewis Center. "We have visited the Cardinal Center several times for shooting and waterfowl events but did camp there for the first time over Thanksgiving. We practically had the park to ourselves," Andrea F. notes.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most glamping options close to Lewis Center fill quickly during summer months. At Alum Creek, "most sites are booked by seasonal campers who pay for the whole season and leave their RV/set-ups in one place the whole season, so all the choice sites (lakefront) are always taken," explains Catherine, who suggests booking a year in advance for premium spots.

Cell service variability: While most campgrounds near Lewis Center offer reliable connectivity, coverage can vary by provider. "Located near the town of Delaware, you aren't too far off the beaten path and we even had decent service with Verizon," reports Marshall P. about Delaware State Park.

Weather considerations: The area experiences significant seasonal changes. "Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather," warns Katelyn P. about Alum Creek. Plan accordingly and check weather forecasts before your trip, especially during spring and fall when conditions can change rapidly.

Tips for camping with families

Waterfront campsites: Mohican State Park Campground offers sites directly on the water. "Beautiful campsites on the water and near it. Playgrounds, cabins, camper cabins, tent sites & camper sites," reports Renée C., who appreciates the winter accessibility with one heated bathroom and shower remaining open year-round.

Kid-friendly activities: Pack fishing gear when glamping close to Lewis Center as most parks offer stocked fishing areas. "We had an absolute blast at the campsite! We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water," shares Jenny C. about her Alum Creek experience, noting the campground beach as "an absolute must."

Simple accommodation options: Basic cabins provide shelter without the hassle of tent setup. "The little cabins at Buckeye Lake KOA have bunk beds in them and are just enough to have shelter to sleep in and then spend the day outside," explains Emily M., highlighting their practical design for families wanting minimal indoor time.

Tips from RVers

Winter camping preparation: When planning cold-weather stays near Lewis Center, verify winterized facilities. "Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. Mohican has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook-up sites are turned off," notes Andrea F., providing practical information for winter RV camping.

Full hookup availability: Rustic Knolls Campground offers complete utility connections for extended stays. "The sites are well maintained. I have stayed there several times, and I plan on going back," shares Kris K., who appreciates the campground's swimming pond and fishing pond for recreation between travel days.

Electric hookup options: Many sites include electric connections useful for running fans during summer heat. "We love that electric is included and was helpful for plugging in fans during the hot night," reports Jenny C. about Alum Creek, where temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels during July and August.
