Best Cabin Camping near Troy, OH

Several state parks and private campgrounds near Troy, Ohio provide furnished cabin rentals with varying amenities. Dayton KOA Holiday in Brookville offers cabins with electricity, some featuring refrigerators, sinks, and coffee makers. "We stayed in a small cabin with a swing on the porch but there are many lodging choices. A stream ran behind the cabin," notes one visitor. Kiser Lake State Park Campground maintains four camper cabins in a more rustic setting, while Lake Loramie State Park features lakeside cabins with screened porches, fire rings, and grills. Buck Creek State Park Campground, approximately 30 minutes from Troy, provides cabin accommodations with access to hiking trails and lake activities.

Cabin sizes range from cozy one-room structures to multi-room family units that sleep 4-6 people. Most state park cabins require minimum two-night stays during weekends and three nights on holiday weekends. Pet policies vary significantly by location, with some parks like Lake Loramie prohibiting pets in cabins while others permit them for an additional fee. KOA cabins typically include more amenities but come at higher price points, often $100-240 per night depending on size and features. According to one KOA visitor, "The cozy cabin had a queen bed, twin bunks and a sofa that made out to a full size sleeper. Kitchen included a fridge, sink and single cup coffee maker." Reservations are essential during summer months, with many locations booking up to 144 days in advance.

Most rustic cabins provide beds with mattresses but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary widely, from basic fire rings with cooking grates to cabins with refrigerators, microwaves, and coffee makers. Visitors should plan to bring cooking utensils, dishware, and food supplies. While some campgrounds maintain on-site stores with basic provisions, selection is typically limited to essentials like firewood, ice, and simple groceries. Cabin campers staying at locations like Natural Springs Resort or Rittenhouse Resort have access to nearby towns within 25 minutes for more substantial shopping. Cleaning supplies are recommended as cabin maintenance standards can vary, particularly during busy seasons when turnover between guests is rapid.

Cozy cabin cured my camping craving!

The adorable cabin fulfilled my tiny home dreams and camping craving! The cozy cabin had a queen bed, twin bunks and a sofa that made out to a full size sleeper. Kitchen included a fridge, sink and single cup coffee maker. Coffee k cups were provided in a few different varieties as well as sugar and creamer packs. Bathroom had tub/shower, clothesline to dry swim suits or hand-washed clothes, toilet, sand sink vanity. Bedding and towels were provided and were crisp, clean white. WiFi was a bonus and although it wasn’t the fastest it was very useful when looking up nearby activities. Our cabin had a grill, an outdoor table with four chairs, a swing and a fire pit which we enjoyed our last night there. Staff was friendly and helpful. There were laundry facilities within the park and lots of activities but we didn’t take advantage of any of that during our brief stay. Overall, we were very pleased and would gladly stay again!

    Cowan Lake State Park Campground

    Just plain nice

Although it’s quite a bit off the main road, it was a nice place to stay. Gate was manned when we arrived just before 8:00 pm. Clerk told us to book online once we picked our spot, as she had just closed the register. We just chose an open spot that was level as we could see in the dark. Weary from a day of travel, we put our heads on the pillow and were fast asleep. Shortly after 9 we heard several rounds of gun shots; that was alarming because it was well after sunset. All in all it was a nice spot with electric only. Several gray water dumps were situated throughout the campground. Dumpsters were full from I’m sure what was a busy weekend of fall camping. The lake was beautiful with ability to rent kayaks. Frisbee golf was onsite too. Commissary for ice and basic sundries, with playground nearby. We didn’t visit the bathhouse, so I’m unsure of it’s condition. Tenant sites with no electricity were down by the lake. Cabin rentals were in a separate spot, off the lake. All in all, in was a nice place with lots of things to do. More of a destination park, for sure.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

Beautiful setting, lots of trees and a steam that runs through it.

We stayed in a small cabin with a swing on the porch but there are many lodging choices. A stream ran behind the cabin. It has a pool and lots of kids activities. Gravel roads aren’t great for small kids learning to ride bikes but ok for older kids and adults.

    Kiser Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet Park

This park is know for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn’t allow any kind of boat with a motor. It also features a beach , 2 playgrounds and several hiking trails. Just be careful if you hike with dogs since some trails intersect with a nature preserve which doesn’t allow pets.

The campground itself has 20 electric sites , 56 primitive sites and 4 camper cabins. All the electric sites are pull through and all sites have a fire pit but only the electric sites come with picnic tables.

Due to off season and COVID the camp store is closed and there is no camper host or park office staff around.

We did notice lots of downed trees on the poorly marked hiking trails. Some trails just started but no maps were around and no trails were blazed. It was hard to tell where we were headed or how long a trail was. I tried using the new Detour app and it wasn’t very accurate for this park.

We did have good Verizon cell coverage.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

    Nice KOA

A nice KOA, with fire pit areas and picnic areas. Each state has a picnic table and the gravel site that we had was level. There is a group yurt for rent a nice little store, and quite a few cabins as well as gazebos and other gathering areas. Wi-fi is horrible even with a booster and sketchy over the air channels.

    Wapakoneta KOA

    Nice little weekend getaway

Stayed 2 nights here. Had a back-in, water/electric spot that was roomy as we were on an end. Wood deck, picnic table, and fire ring included. Very well kept grounds, friendly staff, and all-around good atmosphere.

Venture Out Resorts Arrowhead Lakes Resort

    Big rigs to tents

We stayed here for free for 10 days as a part of a promotion that came with the purchase of our rig. Not sure about normal pricing though, as this campground is owned by Venture Out Resorts and they are a timeshare company (we had to sit for a hour long "pitch" to get our free days). They have 50amp, full hookup, pull through sites (and we saw 40+ ft rigs there) to tent camping to cabin rentals. The campground was clean (shower houses always looked great) and grounds were maintained. Amenities include an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna (close at 10p), but we did not partake because it was so overridden by children, chlorine, and no open windows - didn't seem worth any effort whatsoever in the July heat. The amenities we did checkout (close nightly at 8p) included their new 18 hole mini golf course, small arcade (4 games and pinball was broken 😢), loaner bikes, and water toys (we liked the paddle bikes). The company recently bought the property, so you can see what they inherited vs what it will probably eventually be like based off their sister properties (they recently added the putt putt and a big jungle gym) so it could evolve more as time passes. Regardless, in its current state as active 30 somethings, we were pretty bored. No hiking, significant highway noise, yes a couple big ponds, but a truck stop and truck storage is behind both - so no views. Most of the campers we saw were elderly or had young kids. I'd say if you fall into a category where you want to sit beside your rig all day or want your kids entertained (playgrounds, kids programming - it was luau week so they had a Moana movie night and other kid activities), go on and book a longer stay. If you're only looking for a spot to stay overnight by the highway, do it! It is simple to pull in and have full hookups to take advantage of but a 10 day stay is too long if you're paying. Other things to know: Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy. That said truck stop above was very convenient to get into to fuel up our rig too. Fun fact: Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta and the Armstrong Air & Space Museum is also a max 5 min drive away if you want to get your inner astronaut fix.

    Really Well Done

There are cabins, campsites in trees, campsites that aren’t. There’s a nice Mixture of available sites. All the employees are very nice and helpful. They really work hard to maintain the site. The pool is nice. There is a nice play area for kids. They have a short path in the woods which is a nice little loop. Great location with lots to do!

Guide to Troy

Cabin rentals near Troy, Ohio offer a blend of rustic and modern experiences across several public and private facilities. Sites typically range from more secluded locations around Kiser Lake to busier family-oriented destinations near Indian Lake. Most facilities require advance reservations, with state park cabins booking up to 6 months ahead during summer weekends.

What to do

Lake activities at Kiser Lake: At Kiser Lake State Park Campground, water recreation centers around non-motorized boating. "The campground has no full hookups but does have electric. RV sites have a view of the lake. You can also rent canoes or paddle boats. No motors permitted on the lake," notes Aaliya B. The lake offers calm waters suitable for beginner paddlers.

Explore aviation history: For cabin guests at Wright-Patterson FamCamp, the area's military aviation history is accessible. "There is a lot to do and visit on and off post. Unfortunately the Air Museum was closed because of the budget shut down but all other services were available," reports Byron S. Active duty and veteran status required for this facility.

Swimming options beyond lakes: Several cabin facilities provide swimming alternatives when lake conditions aren't ideal. At Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, "There is a nice pool and splash pad. Weirdly, the pool closed from 4 to 5, leaving us with nowhere to go on a 90+ degree day," shares Megan M. Many cabin areas maintain separate camper-only swimming areas apart from public beaches.

What campers like

Spacious cabin sites: Many visitors appreciate cabins with ample outdoor space. At Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, "Large spacious sites with cement or paved spots. Can be muddy after rain. Has a pool, playground, putt putt golf, boat docks, hiking trails, and some other great amenities," reports Ashleigh D.

Clear spring water: Cabin guests at Natural Springs Resort particularly value the unique water features. "This camp ground has a beautiful spring fed quarry with clean and clear water. Easy going fishing spots a pool, weekend activities and even a small camp store with grill/ice cream inside," writes Daniele M. The resort maintains year-round access to many amenities.

Quiet rural settings: Many cabins provide peaceful surroundings despite proximity to urban areas. Visitors to Dayton KOA Holiday note "Excellent rural setting. One of the nicer KOAs. Great staff and facilities. Mostly level sites. Grass, trees, and a pond all very well maintained," according to James P. Most sites maintain quiet hours beginning at 10pm.

What you should know

Seasonal water quality concerns: Water quality varies significantly between locations and seasons. At Grand Lake St. Marys, "The entire lake stinks of pig poop. All the air smells like poo. You feel like you are breathing feces when you approach the water," cautions Megan M. Research current water quality advisories before booking water-focused cabin stays.

Utility limitations: Cabins range from primitive to fully equipped. At Kiser Lake, some visitors note limitations: "This park has a beautiful lake and nice (although short) hiking trails. The problem is that there is no running water- no showers and smelly pit toilets. There is one spigot for drinking water," warns Megan M.

Cleaning standards vary: Maintenance quality fluctuates between facilities and seasons. One KOA visitor reported issues: "Cabin smelled of rotten food as soon as we opened the door. There was rotten food in the fridge and in the sink...I spent an hour cleaning the cabin with my limited supplies before I would even let my daughter in." Bring basic cleaning supplies as a precaution.

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: Many cabin locations offer organized recreation. At Lake Loramie State Park Campground, "We had a great weekend of camping! The weather was perfect, the kids loved the playground and had fun at the Fun Field Day activities!" reports Shanda A. Call ahead to verify current activity schedules.

Child-friendly campgrounds: Certain locations specifically cater to families with young children. At Indian Lake State Park Campground, "This is definitely a campground for families and for those who want lots of company in their experience. Lots of activities for kids and families and even movies and music on the weekend," advises leif D.

Pet policies: Rules regarding pets in cabins vary widely. While most tent camping areas allow leashed pets, cabin policies differ substantially. Research specific pet restrictions before booking, as many cabins prohibit pets entirely or charge additional cleaning fees ranging from $25-50 per stay.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: For RVers transitioning between cabin and vehicle camping, site selection matters. At Grand Lake St. Marys, "The pull through area is very cramped; more like a parking lot; the campground is quiet; family friendly; no golf carts all over," notes Kim M. Request specific cabin or site numbers when booking.

Connection capabilities: Wi-Fi and cellular reception vary significantly between locations. At Kiser Lake, visitors report "We did have good Verizon cell coverage," while other locations may offer spotty service depending on carrier. Most cabin areas with electrical hookups provide more reliable connectivity.

Backup accommodations: When RV plans fall through, cabins offer alternatives. "We stayed in a small cabin with a swing on the porch but there are many lodging choices," states another camper at a nearby facility. Most locations requiring cabin reservations well in advance during peak season.
