West Branch State Park Campground offers equestrian camping with designated areas for horses that provide safe accommodations for both riders and their animals. The campground features specialized horse camping areas with appropriate facilities, though recent changes have allowed tent campers to share this space, creating some safety concerns as children may run near horses that could spook. Horse campers have expressed frustration that non-equestrian campers are permitted in the horse camping area while horse trailers aren't allowed in the main campground with full hookups. The site's equestrian trails connect directly to camping areas, providing easy access for daily rides.

Located on a scenic lake with multiple recreation options, West Branch requires reservations well in advance for premium horse camping sites. The bridle paths wind through wooded areas and connect to larger trail networks in the region. Horse owners need to bring their own containment systems as permanent corrals are limited. Tent sites and RV spots in the equestrian section are spacious enough to accommodate both living quarters and horse trailers. The primitive camping area for horses offers basic amenities including water access, but lacks electrical hookups that are available in the main campground. West Branch's mix of lake access, trails, and dedicated space for horses makes it a practical choice for overnight equestrian adventures, though the integration of non-horse campers in the equestrian area remains a logistical challenge.

      Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet little campground

Tucked away in southeastern Ohio is a gem of a park for camping, hiking and horse camping. Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails! Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy! Only a few electric sites available. Mostly flat shaded sites most perfect for tents or trailers.

      Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet and Beautiful

This smaller campground has a mix of equestrian sites and tent/RV sites. There are no showers, but the vault toilets were cleaned thoroughly ever morning. You need to be careful when booking, especially if you are trying to pitch a tent, as some sites are quite sloped. Our site was huge and right next to the water spigot.

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

What a great place to camp!

First time here. They told me Ohio State Parks were voted #1 in the US. Well there is a reason for that. Beautiful, clean, great spots, not a bad site in the entire park. Wood is dry and cheap right outside the park entrance. Bass fishing is top notch on the lake. I would definitely come back here again and again.

Awesome state park with many amenities

Ranger Review: Morsel Spork at West Branch State Park

      **Campground Review: **

This state park was very welcome after our first two unlucky Ohio state park experiences. We had no trouble pulling in at 3 pm on a Sunday after Labor Day with no reservations and snagging a very nice spot (Site 50 backs up to Kirwan Reservoir). There are two loops that are on Jay Lake where there is a beach; it was understandable that there weren’t any water view spots that had not been reserved here. A very quiet park that is well-maintained with lots of amenities. Even the rumbling of the nearby trains was on the quiet side! Nice playground with toy stocked sandpit, volleyball net, cheap laundry ($3 per load, wash and dry), dishwashing sinks, showers, and clean bathrooms. There was even a step stool for kids to be able to reach the sinks. A staffed store(9am-7pm on Sunday, 11am-7pm Monday– Thursday and 9 am– 8:30 pm on Saturday) with basic supplies and, of course, t-shirts and sweatshirts. Some of the sites have a slight grade so be cautious when selecting. Many trees that provide separation between sites. Several short hiking trails. A side note: I only saw one non-Ohio license plate besides ours in the entire park, almost like it is an Ohio secret (not anymore!)

      **Product Review: **

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I have the opportunity to test products. At this campground, I tested the large  Morsel Spork from Outdoor Element. I have to admit that when I unpacked my box from Outdoor Elements, I was surprised at how LONG our morsel sporks were(we have other sporks that are much shorter so I was expecting these to be a similar size) but then I saw a photo of someone using it with their freeze-dried meal and it was an aha moment! No need to dirty another dish because this mighty spork can reach to the bottom of the pouch with no problem! These sporks are also sturdier than others we have used. The rubber scraper edge is a nice touch – would be great for getting the last delicious bits of meals from the freeze-dried meal pouches and I’m thinking also in glass or plastic containers. A very nice addition to our camping tools.

      West Branch State Park Campground

      Great Find!

Here's what's great about this campground situated at an easy drive from major cities like Columbus and Cleveland...its scenic, a fully loaded campground with bathhouses, parks, hiking paths, swimming resivoir with boat rental...we highly recommend renting a pontoon for the day and hanging out in the resivoir for swimming and lounging! It's both relaxing and nice to get away from the beach crowd!

    Guide to Berlin Center

West Branch State Park provides equestrian camping options near Berlin Center, Ohio, with specialized facilities for horse riders. The park spans 5,379 acres with a 2,650-acre reservoir that creates varied terrain for horse trails. Camping season runs primarily from April through October with occasional extended availability depending on weather conditions. The horse camping area offers direct trail access but recent policy changes have created mixed-use camping situations.

    What to do

Trail riding year-round: West Branch State Park maintains bridle trails that connect directly to camping areas. One camper noted, "The bridle paths wind through wooded areas and connect to larger trail networks in the region."

Water recreation access: At Mosquito Lake State Park, campers can enjoy fishing and boating from their sites. "Great lake to take the kayaks on," shares Linda R., while another camper mentions "We stayed at site 160. No electricity, no hook ups, but a HUGE lakefront site. Beach is right next door too!"

Hiking opportunities: Multiple trail systems accommodate hikers of all skill levels. A camper at Beaver Creek State Park reports, "Lots of trails to choose from and the pioneer village in the state park gives you many options to spend the day."

    What campers like

Lakefront camping: Many sites at West Branch feature water views or direct access. According to Katelyn P., "Great site! Shades lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access."

Privacy between sites: West Branch State Park Campground offers well-separated sites in many areas. One camper observed, "Very clean individual showers" and another mentioned, "Many trees that provide separation between sites."

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness is consistently praised across parks. Teresa B. notes about West Branch, "Very clean bathrooms! Beautiful sites with lake views," while a camper at Jefferson Lake State Park reports, "Clean vault toilets and the campground overall was well maintained."

    What you should know

Site selection challenges: Check campground maps carefully before booking. Andrea F. warns about West Branch: "Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches."

Seasonal water issues: Some parks experience algae blooms during summer months. A visitor to Mosquito Lake notes: "The algae was kind of thick, which made fishing impossible, so we stopped bringing the kayak."

Limited amenities at smaller parks: Hidden Hollow Campground offers free camping but minimal services. A camper explains: "Pit toilets and no source of safe, clean water anymore. Very quiet everytime I've camped there, many times btw."

    Tips for camping with families

Choose sites near recreation: Parks with multiple activity options keep children engaged. As Lee D. notes about West Branch: "Nice playground with toy stocked sandpit, volleyball net, cheap laundry, dishwashing sinks, showers, and clean bathrooms. There was even a step stool for kids to be able to reach the sinks."

Book campsites in advance: Popular equestrian campgrounds near Berlin Center fill quickly, especially in summer. Alisa G. advises: "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!"

Look for family programming: Some parks offer organized activities. "An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend," shares a camper about weekend events at West Branch.

    Tips from RVers

Water fill challenges: Some parks have poorly designed water stations. One RVer at West Branch noted: "The water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full. This was okay for a short weekend but not good planning."

Site leveling requirements: Many RV sites in equestrian campgrounds near Berlin Center require leveling equipment. Heidi B. reported about Canton / East Sparta KOA Holiday: "Sites are spacious and level. Very clean park. There are several full hook-up sites."

Specialty horse camping considerations: Horse owners camping with RVs need specific site requirements. One visitor mentioned: "Tent sites and RV spots in the equestrian section are spacious enough to accommodate both living quarters and horse trailers."
