      Holden Beach RV Campground

      Would stay again

We spent 2 months at HBRV campground in spring of 2026. The staff is amazing. Our campsite was a little tight, as many of them are. But they also have some spacious, private spaces. There are only 2 washing machines for the whole campground, so laundry can get tricky on busy days. Several showers (5) including a handicapped shower. Nice clean, hot, high pressure showers. Not much climate control in the bath houses, so it can be hot or cold, depending on outside temps. Great walking trail around the park, as well as a small dog park. Grounds are well maintained & is located about 2 miles from the beach with a free shuttle back & forth. They do charge $3 per package for any deliveries. Very quiet, friendly park & we would recommend staying there.

      Carolina Beach State Park Campground

      Great spot!

I’ve been staying here every summer since i was a kid. So probably 11 summers now. It’s a great place. Clean bathrooms and cute well air conditioned cabins. You can ride your bike or walk to the boardwalk with some of the way having a paved bike trails. Gates close i think at 10 and open in the morning so remember to bring bikes. During the summer it is very humid and hot with lots of mosquitoes so remember to bring your bug spray. Try britt’s doughnuts of wake and bake before you leave, i promise you won’t regret it.

      Carolina Beach State Park Campground

Beautiful coastal forest on the banks of the Cape Fear River

The group campground is isolated from the rest of the camping areas and is quiet at night. There are a lot of park visitors who walk through the area, but the trail through goes around he main campsites. The pit toilets are in need of some attention, but have always been well stocked. It’s about 400 yards to hike in, so we used a wagon to bring in gear. No water on site, but a really nice fire pit with grill top and 2 picnic tables. Shady tent sites available, but really hot and buggy in summer. Group camp site is about .5 mile hike from the river which is great for wading, but swimming is not allowed.

Many species of carnivorous plants grow here and abundant wildlife.

in the summer months there is a place to rent kayaks and paddle boards at the marina.

      Lake Waccamaw State Park Campground

Great campground but avoid the yurt!

I have camped with a large group of friends at site #2 a couple of times, but this weekend, I wanted to camp with just my two boys, and site #5 (the yurt site) was available.  This site was new since I had camped here last.  It said it slept 6 and the website showed a pic of two beds; I *assumed* there would be four more, since it slept 6.

Long story short, just 2 beds.  But the worst part was weeds growing up through the floorboards, ripped screens, doors that wouldn't zip completely, and two (purposeful) holes at the top that surely let in mosquitoes!  The boy who slept at ground level is completely bitten up, despite me spraying everyone with bug spray and using my tennis racket-style bug zapper to clear out the yurt before bed.

Our trash can was completely full (I mean, at least there's a trash can, but we could hardly use it). Our fire ring was full of ashes and the grate was jammed down.  The previous campers had left us a few jugs of water but also small pieces of trash scattered about.  What I'm trying to say was that this site was not maintained between the last visitors and us.

The campground, though, is awesome if you like roughing it.  You are allowed, thankfully, to drive to your site, but it's a hike to walk to the running water toilets, and I saw lots of people drive to them.  There is a closer pit toilet but I didn't check that out.

The lake is beautiful, shallow, warm, good fishing, fun for everyone!  Bullfrogs, peepers, and owls called all night.  Dragonflies galore flew about.  It's rustic, but relaxing.  And the visitor's center has a nice exhibit on the Carolina Bays.

Beautiful and peaceful setting and wine to boot!

What's not to like. Beautiful, family owned campground. Large spacious and clean well organized sites. Picnic tables and BBQ grills on sites. Pull thoughts. Winery with taste testing hours and wine to purchase. 2-0/30/50 amp service. Dog run, wireless internet, laundry, pool, bath house with oversize showers, covered stage, art gallery/ gift shop, propane, playground, fishing pond, scheduled events.

CarrollWoods RV Park at Grapefull Sisters Vineyard

      Actually 4.8 Stars

Spent the week before Memorial Day and Memorial Weekend at Carrollwoods. This is really a nice campground. The sites are well-spaced with a picnic table, fire pit and grill at each site. There’s a pool that was unfortunately out of service during most of our visit there during the 90-degree heat. It was finally open when the weather cooled. There were not many other campers until the weekend and then there were only a few sites left. The grounds are very spacious. Lots of room to walk with a few short paths that go into the woods. It has one of the best dog parks that I have ever been to. It is very spacious, fully shaded by lots of trees and even has a few man-made hills for the pooches to climb. The only downside was it appeared as if the waste bin hadn’t been empty in several days. I visited the winery and the two women who own it are helpful and lively. If you visit, you must get one of their wine floats. My only negatives were they advertise free WiFi and cable. I wish businesses would not promote poor quality products as “free”. I probably could access their WiFi no more than for 3 times in all the time I was there and would last no more than 10 minutes. The cable had several odd channels and there was so much buffering, it was often unwatchable. My only other issue is that they need to do some cleanup in their gardens. There were several planters with dead plants in them from the year before. Either refill them or get rid of them. The beds are well designed, but needed a good weeding. Even with its flaws, this is definitely a campground I would return to.

      Carolina Beach State Park Campground

      Favorite Campground Near the Beach

I have camped at Carolina Beach State Park 1-2 times a year for the past five years. The campsites at this park are some of the cleanest sites I have camped at. We never see any trash on the ground or out on the trails. The bath house is always clean and stocked even in the winter. The bathhouse is also heated during the winter months and there are quit a few outlets available which we used to charge our phones. There lots of short trails to hike on where you can enjoy bird watching and viewing the Venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants native to the area. There is also a marina which offers a public boat ramp. The marina also offers kayaks and SUP tours and rentals ranging from 2hrs to a full-day. This Campground is also located next to a food lion. It is also only 5 minutes from the beach and Freeman Park where you can drive directly onto the beach if you have 4WD. This campground is packed on holiday weekends. There were only 2 campsites available when we visited for memorial day weekend.

    Guide to Wilmington

Carolina Beach State Park offers primitive and platform campsites 4 miles from the ocean shores with easy access to local attractions. Located in coastal North Carolina, the park sits on a peninsula bordered by the Cape Fear River, Snow's Cut, and the Atlantic Ocean. Winter camping provides milder temperatures with fewer crowds at most locations in the region.

    What to do

Water activities at the lake: Lake Waccamaw State Park features shallow waters extending hundreds of yards from shore, making it ideal for family swimming. "The lake is beautifully kept and clean. Very shallow. You can walk out a good 300 meters," notes a camper at Lake Waccamaw State Park.

Beach driving: Some beaches in the Wilmington area allow four-wheel drive access directly onto the sand. "You can drive onto the beach - it makes it SO easy!!!" reports a visitor at Carolina Beach State Park. This feature simplifies transportation of gear and coolers.

Local wine tasting: Several campgrounds near Wilmington offer on-site wine experiences. CarrollWoods RV Park includes vineyard access with regular tastings. "If you visit, you must get one of their wine floats," suggests a guest who enjoyed the winery's specialties.

Off-season exploration: Winter months provide unique camping experiences with fewer crowds. "I've been here at different times of the year. I really enjoy camping here in December and January. Less people and the park is so nice," mentions a Carolina Beach State Park camper.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campgrounds near Wilmington offer well-spaced accommodations. At Wilmington KOA, "The deluxe tent sites were very nice with a covered sitting area and soft pads for our tent. The sites were well spaced as well," according to a camper.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the maintenance standards at local parks. "The bath house is always clean and stocked even in the winter. The bathhouse is also heated during the winter months and there are quit a few outlets available which we used to charge our phones," notes a Carolina Beach visitor.

Beach proximity: Most campers appreciate the quick access to shorelines. At Holden Beach RV Campground, "We are only a few miles from the beach. The sites have full hook-up, fire pits, and picnic tables." Some locations even offer transport: "A free trolly takes you to the beach and some restaurants."

Urban convenience: Despite natural settings, many campsites maintain proximity to services. "This campground is convenient to downtown Wilmington and a short drive to Wrightsville Beach. Plenty of shopping and other entertainment nearby if the weather doesn't cooperate," explains a Wilmington KOA reviewer.

    What you should know

Winter amenities: Cold-weather campers benefit from heated facilities at several locations. "The bathhouse is also heated during the winter months and there are quit a few outlets available which we used to charge our phones," notes a Carolina Beach State Park camper.

Site size variations: Space between accommodations varies significantly between campgrounds and specific sites. "Our first time here. The campground is very rustic, but it's clean, well kept, adequate space to maneuver and campers are considerate and quiet," explains a visitor at S & W RV Park.

Wi-Fi reliability: Internet connectivity fluctuates across the region. Some campgrounds advertise Wi-Fi but deliver inconsistent service. "WiFi is strong," reports one Wilmington KOA camper, while other locations may have limited connectivity.

Walking distances: Some campgrounds require significant walking between facilities. "The only warning I'd give is you are permitted to drive to your campsite to set up, but sites 2-5 are a quarter mile plus from the parking area," warns a Lake Waccamaw visitor. "Don't forget anything in the car."

    Tips for camping with families

Beach alternatives: When weather prevents ocean swimming, look for campgrounds with pools. At CarrollWoods RV Park, "There's a pool, the winery, a couple of trips to the beach and surrounding area. We were well received. We are new to camping and a family of color. We highly recommend."

Entertainment options: Some campgrounds provide organized activities for children. "They had arts and crafts and the kids enjoyed the train ride," shares a Wilmington KOA visitor about the scheduled programs.

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play equipment. "It has one of the best dog parks that I have ever been to. It is very spacious, fully shaded by lots of trees and even has a few man-made hills for the pooches to climb," reports a CarrollWoods RV Park camper.

Bike-friendly paths: For active families, consider campgrounds with safe cycling areas. "We could see our kids riding their bikes around with no issues at all," notes a Holden Beach RV Campground visitor about the layout.

    Tips from RVers

Site access: Many campgrounds provide staff assistance with parking. At Holden Beach RV Campground, "The lady at check-in led me to my site and even helped direct me backing in."

Winter camping benefits: Cold-weather RVing offers advantages in the Wilmington area. "I really enjoy camping here in December and January. Less people and the park is so nice," mentions a Cypress Ranch Glamping visitor about off-season stays.

Hook-up quality: Electrical and water service varies between locations. "30/50 is solid, sewer easy access and water pressure is good," confirms a Holden Beach RV Campground camper regarding utilities.

Group camping options: For RVers traveling with mixed accommodation needs, consider parks with multiple options. "You can rent some cabins and/or rent RV spots so if you have a mixed camping family, some can come in their RVs/trailers and others can rent a cabin and y'all will still be next to each other," explains a visitor to a local group camp.
