    Cane Creek Park

A Great Place for the Whole Family.

Located just outside historic Waxhaw NC, Cane Creek is part of the NC Soil Conservative Sites. They offer day passes,$4.00 per car where you can launch you kayak canoe or fishing boat. If you like Bass Fishing, they rank as one of the best spots around. They have swimming areas for both day users and one for campers. This really is a gem within Union Co NC. The campground is on the other side of the lake. They have camping for RV’s, Cabin Rentals and tent sites for either large groups or individuals. The hiking trail is beautiful and takes you around the whole lake. Watch for horses, as this is a great place for riders too.

    Charlotte-Fort Mill KOA

Great for trip to Charlotte NC

We came here to do some trailer maintenance and because it is very close to home. We were not expecting it to be a great camping experience, but we’re pleasantly surprised! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the campsites were clean, and the bath houses were newly updated and immaculate. The roads in the section we stayed in were a bit rough (a combination of asphalt and gravel), but perfectly fine for camping. Most of the sites have good shade, but unfortunately our site was in full sun. Our site had full hookups, and a picnic table that was pretty rickety. No fire ring. The sites are very close together, and most are back to back sharing a driveway. Personally we prefer a more secluded camping spot, but this KOA is perfect for an overnight on your way to another location, a trip to nearby Charlotte, or like us, utilizing the full hookups for some waterline maintenance.

    Cane Creek Park

    Great clean campground

We have stayed at Cane Creek 2x now and enjoy the park so much. Lake, hiking trails and nice wooded campsites with fire rings and close proximity to bath houses. Playground for kids, little store, friendly staff. Beach swimming area closed due to Covid but looks nice. Park on other side of lake has picnic shelters, more trails, frisbee golf and kayak rentals that will open after Covid. Only problem is that both times we visited there was a storm and power went out for hours. Can’t really do anything about that!

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

    Good

So, if you end up in a crap site you might drop those 4 stars to 3. Its going to be impossible to determine a great site from a bad without going there since the only pic they have online is from site 1. B loop, has a lot of RVs. A loop, has the amphitheater. C loop, felt like the smallest loop and really close to the entry hiking trail. We've stayed in both A and C. C loop, site 48, is where we stayed this trip. Its a good site. Close to the showers, which are clean and well maintained. Close to the trash bins and water spicket as well. Behind the site is a great little "valley" to explore if you have kids/dogs. Has awesome trees for hammocks and the tent pad doesnt slope. Did not love the fire pit at this site but the sites to the left and right are great. Overall, tons of sites and good clean facilities. The trails are plentiful so you shouldnt run out of places to explore.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Historical get away in the forest

The swaying of pine trees with the smell of the forest greets us at this easily accessible site in our motorhome. Electric and water hookups at our site, dump station available on the way out, camp host available. Picnic tables, fire pit available at our site. Lots of shade, plenty of trails that cover this State Park. The Kron house nearby, the swimming pool ( closed at time of our visit). The town of Albemarle 10 minutes away and Badin lake right down the mountain. Lots of history here just stop at the ranger station for information, maps and more.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Family friendly, clean, quiet considering close proximity of neighbors

Very family friendly camp ground. Sites are close together, but not too terrible. Sites include tent pad, fire ring with grate, table, lantern hook. Facilities we're kept nicely, host was very helpful and makes rounds in the evenings with firewood ($5 bundle). Hiked the trail head near the campground, to the river.. lovely hike NO RIVER ACCESS FOR FISHING though... Embankment is too steep, we learned this after the 2.5 mile hike with the kids... Went down the road to the lake the next day (they have boat rentals, though we didn't get one).

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

    Pretty Basic

Plentiful campsites, we arrived on a Friday without a reservation and were able to get a spot. There is a swimming pool, but we didn't swim. Some hikes nearby, but far from the swimming spots in the Uwharrie National Forest. No bathrooms near the campsites, but there were spigots with potable water. The tent pads were even and well packed. All sites had a picnic bench and a fire pit with a grate.

    Tent camping

Did some tent camping in mid October. Had tons of fun and the park was really clean. Bath houses were nice and had hot water. T mobile service doesn’t work at all, but they have Wi-Fi hotspots for rent for $5 per day. Tent camping was $7.50 per night. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5, was because Quiet hours are supposed to be from 11-7, but there were people partying pretty late. Definitely should’ve brought some ear plugs. What campers like

Clean, modern bathhouses: Many cabins share access to recently renovated facilities. At Charlotte-Fort Mill KOA, Bonnie B. appreciates that "the bathroom is clean, the showers are clean, provide plenty of hooks to keep things off floor and a stool to sit on."

Wooded settings with canopy cover: Mature forests provide natural shade for cabin areas. Matthew W. describes Norwood Campground: "We particularly appreciated the intact tree canopy; many rv parks these days are sun baked parking lots but not here. I estimated roughly 60/40 hardwood/pine and there's sun or shade when you want either."

Year-round accessibility: Morrow Mountain State Park Campground offers cabin camping throughout all seasons. According to Sara C., "We loved our stay! Glad to finally find a nice campground just over an hour away from Charlotte. Easy trek for a short weekend trip."

Amenities for extended stays: Some locations cater to longer visits with comprehensive facilities. Robert D. reports about Cane Creek, "I stayed here for nine days. The campground is clean and well-maintained. The bathhouse is in good shape and clean. I will come back when I'm in this area."

What you should know

Wi-Fi availability: Internet access varies significantly between locations. At Military Park Shaw AFB Wateree Recreation Area, Matt C. reports, "T mobile service doesn't work at all, but they have Wi-Fi hotspots for rent for $5 per day."

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas: Kid-friendly facilities enhance family stays. At Norwood Campground, C R. shares, "My family needed a weekend getaway but far from home. This place was amazing. Great playground, pool and relaxing time!"

Consider holiday activity programming: Some parks offer special events during peak periods. Sarah B. notes about Cane Creek Park, "Holidays usually have some activities for kids. The mini golf is free and a blast."

Check swimming area schedules: Pool and beach access often follows limited schedules. Jeanette M. explains, "Beach swimming area closed due to Covid but looks nice. Park on other side of lake has picnic shelters, more trails, frisbee golf and kayak rentals."

Prepare for wildlife encounters: The region hosts diverse wildlife, creating educational opportunities. James H. from Morrow Mountain reports, "The park is gorgeous and full of life. I saw plenty of frogs and tadpoles in the creeks, listened to a symphony of birds, and I'm pretty sure heard a few coyotes throughout the night."

Tips from RVers

Transportation to attractions: Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort provides convenient shuttle service for theme park visits. Creighton C. explains, "This campground is owned by carowinds and has free bus rides to and from the park from open until close... This is a perfect place to stay because after a long day of rides you can come right back to your camper to relax instead of driving all the way home."

Year-round RV accommodations: Several locations remain open through winter months. Kevin A. notes, "We spent the last few days at the Carowinds Camp Wilderness campground in Site 70 with full hook-ups. Sites were clean, level, and reasonably spaced."

Accessibility for large rigs: Most cabin-featuring campgrounds also accommodate larger RVs with appropriate hookups. Bob F. reports, "RV spaces are a nice size with plenty of grass. Some airplane noise from planes using CLT, but wasn't bothersome. It's a short drive to restaurants and shopping, and very convenient if visiting Charlotte and surrounding cities."
