What to do
Hiking opportunities: Medoc Mountain State Park in Hollister offers several miles of varied trails suitable for all skill levels. "This campground is beautiful for fall camping. There are over 10 miles of trails to hike. We also conoed down the creek. The creek is about 2.5 miles long and took us only 2 hours to paddle," notes one visitor to Medoc Mountain State Park Campground.
Fishing access: Multiple campgrounds maintain stocked ponds with catch-and-release fishing that doesn't require a state license. At RVacation Campground, campers appreciate "Pretty lake to look over. Easy on and off the highway and easy access to shopping and RV store. No frills but worth the money."
Water activities: Swimming areas provide relief during hot summer months. The Falls Lake State Recreation Area features designated swimming beaches with changing facilities. "I stayed on the cove of Holly point. These are very nice and quiet sites. Good options if you would like some privacy while camping. They also have good spots for fishing and small boat launches (canoe's, and kayaks)," reports a camper at Holly Point — Falls Lake State Recreation Area.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campgrounds offer sufficient space between camping spots, particularly state parks. "Large, level sites that are very secluded and far apart from each other. Bathrooms were clean and well situated. Very family-friendly! We want to come back soon!" shares a visitor to Medoc Mountain State Park.
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses receive consistent positive mentions. "Large sites, level spots. Clean bathrooms, hot showers. Camp host and rangers are great!" says one camper about Medoc Mountain State Park Campground.
Year-round options: Some campgrounds remain open throughout winter. At The RV Resort At Carolina Crossroads, "We are new rv travelers and this is our third stop on our way down to Florida. This place is quiet and so easy to get to. The hot tub was awesome after a stressful drive. Laundry area is clean and works great!"
What you should know
Interstate noise impact: Traffic sounds affect multiple campgrounds, especially those positioned closest to I-95. "All night long we were able to hear the highway (i-95) and trains passing by. My husband is an extremely light sleeper so it was much worse for him. The kids slept fine and it was just ok for me," explains a visitor to RVacation Campground.
Limited cell service: Some state parks have spotty or no cellular coverage. A camper at Medoc Mountain notes: "No cell service! 😀 Clean restrooms, hot showers! Camp host and rangers are great!"
