Best Cabin Camping near Cherry Point, NC

Furnished cabins at locations like Goose Creek State Park Campground provide overnight accommodations with varying levels of amenities. The cabins at Goose Creek feature electricity, heating and air conditioning, but no kitchen facilities or bathrooms inside the units. New Bern KOA Holiday offers cabin rentals with more extensive amenities including electricity and private outdoor areas with fire pits. The cabins at Great Island Cabin Camp are more rustic with gas stoves, sinks, and basic furnishings. According to one visitor, "The cabins are clean but very rustic - bathroom, bunkbeds (with clean and comfy mattresses), gas stove, sink, plastic table and chairs, and a porch - just straight up fishing cabins, nothing fancy."

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. The Lakes RV & Cabin Resort and Goose Creek State Park offer more modern accommodations with electricity and climate control. Most cabins accommodate 4-6 people with a combination of twin and full beds. Several campgrounds like New Bern KOA Holiday and Goose Creek State Park accept pets in their cabin accommodations. Reservations are essential, especially during peak summer months when cabins fill quickly. One camper shared, "They have a cabin that is fully handicapped! It has a paved sidewalk to the bathrooms and they will allow you to drive your 'person' down the access path to the water way!"

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Goose Creek State Park cabins have twin beds and a full bed, but guests must bring all bedding. Great Island Cabin Camp provides mattresses, but visitors need to bring everything else required for their stay. Cooking facilities vary significantly between properties - from fully equipped kitchens at some locations to simple gas stoves at more remote sites like Cape Lookout National Seashore cabins. Limited on-site stores at properties like New Bern KOA Holiday sell basic supplies, but remote locations like Great Island Cabin Camp require bringing all provisions including drinking water. "If you crave isolation and wide open spaces - don't miss this gorgeous place! The only on-island supplies are ice and gasoline, so you must pack in everything," notes one reviewer.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

    Back to my roots

I have a personal pull to Goose Creek State Park as it was once my family’s land going back generations and generations. My great-grandfather, grandfather, and father carved out the trails used for hiking today and the road to the campground its self was made by my dad and his friends. The state bought the land in the 70’s and it became our state park. It makes me proud to share a part of my family history with the rest of the world.

Even without the personal connection I feel when I visit GCSP, it’s such a beautiful place to be during anytime of the year. Hiking trails equipped with boardwalks lead through the marsh and swampy areas while sporadic signs display pictures and information about the wildlife you are likely to see. The primitive campground has more than 10 sites, with the farthest sights sitting on the edge of the Pamlico River. It truly is an awesome sight to take in at sunset and sunrise. Bath houses with showers, hot water, and toilets are available. There are two group sites and, recently added, several rv sites and about 5-6 small cabins. I have not stayed in the cabins yet. They seem to be fairly popular so reservations should be made at least a couple of weeks in advanced. There heat and AC but no bathrooms or kitchen area inside the cabin. I believe there are two sets of twin beds and a full bed but you have to bring your own linens. There is also a very nice bathhouse available for cabin renters. The only downside to the cabins and RV sites is there is no shade. The sites are toward the front of the park, and, perhaps because of the recent construction, there is are no trees, woods, or shade around. As a personal preference, I want to be IN THE WOODS when I camp so the aspect of being out in the open is not as exciting as tent camping. That being said, the cabins are adorable and have a fire ring, picnic table, and everything you need to enjoy a night of camping.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

    Nice spot in eastern NC

Booked a tent site and later a cabin as well since we were unsure about the weather. The tent sites were nicely situated and far apart from each other. The vault toilet was very clean. The site is peaceful and since the weather was pretty bad, it was quiet and only a few sites were occupied.

The cabins are new and clean, with AC/heat and electricity and a nice outdoor setup with a grill and fire pit aside each one. They are located in the cleared RV park, not the woods, so don't expect to feel like you are staying in nature if you book a cabin. The shower facilities are very nice too. Overall, cabins are a great option if the weather is bad or you don't want to stay in a tent.

Plan for bugs - ticks and mosquitoes are a given in the summer. Also, the swimming beach is closed as of May 2020.

Great Island Cabin Camp — Cape Lookout National Seashore

    Dreamy hidden gem!

What a hidden gem! Cabins are clean but very rustic - bathroom, bunkbeds (with clean and comfy mattresses), gas stove, stink, platic table and chairs, and a porch - just straight up fishing cabins, nothing fancy. But they are situated directly behind the dunes from miles and miles of totally prestine beaches. The only on-island supplies are ice and gasoline, so you must pack in everything. Tap water is potable but tastes very desalinated, so bottled water is recommended. If you crave isolation and wide open spaces - dont miss this gorgeous place! Be sure to bleed your tire PSI all the way down to 18 and drive 10 miles down the dune road to the lighthouse. Totally dreamy and not to be missed!

Long Point Cabin Camp — Cape Lookout National Seashore

    Secluded Beach Camping

If you are looking for beaches that aren't covered with people, you may have a hard time finding something no matter what state you live in. Luckily, North Carolina has some amazing beaches on the Outer Banks, and Long Point Cabin area should definitely be on your list of spots to check out. Since this area is on a small barrier island, you have to take a ferry to reach the cabins. Because of this you, and the other temporary residents of these cabins, have the island all to yourselves.

Being located far from any truly habited land comes with some benefits and issues. If you are looking for empty beaches, lots of outdoor activities (fishing, hiking, shelling, kayaking, etc.), and clear skies to view the stars at night, this is the campground for you. The downfall to this seclusion, though, is that you have to bring all of your necessities and recreational gear with you on the ferry. With an off-road vehicle, this will be no big deal. But if you don't have that luxury, you will be carrying your stuff back and forth on the back of a cart driven by one of the NPS staff. You also don't have any access to convenient stores for forgotten stuff or drinkable water. So be prepared before you head out to the island.

Although the cabins are a bit older, they are still great for your stay here. They all have a porch with rocking chairs to be able to soak up all of the island sun and breeze you can on your trip. They also each have their own private bathrooms and kitchen, so you don't have to worry about sharing with your neighbors.

I actually decided to set up my tent for the first night since it was so beautiful outside, but that required a lot of clearing an area in the sand for my tent since the send is covered in broken shells. This was a bit of a chore, but was so worth it when I fell asleep under the stars that night. Also be prepared for changing weather. As nice as it was the first day, I had to take down my tent the next day due to the harsh winds and rainstorm. Once that cleared up, though, the weather was back to being as beautiful as before.

    Pros

    • Solitude
    • Great fishing and other outdoor activities
    • Clear night skies for stargazing
    • Private cabins or camping
    • Personal bathrooms + kitchen

    Cons

    • No convenient stores for forgotten items
    • Must bring all drinking water
    • Older cabins
    • Hard to explore without an off-road vehicle
    • Quick-changing weather

    Tranter's Creek Resort

One of the cleanest pools I have ever laid eyes on.

Tent sites with electrical hook ups right beside the river. There is a fish cleaning sink and a pier to fish from also. Small cabins are for rent here as well. This facility has one of the cleanest pools I have ever been in. Very well kept bathroom facilities with a laundromat as well. Very friendly staff and guests here as well.

    New Bern KOA Holiday

Really nice KOA in a VERY pretty town.

New Bern is a really wonderful little town on the coast of NC and this KOA is close to all the action. I really enjoyed our stay and the local town. We stayed in a camping cabin that overlooked the little pond area. The bathrooms were nice and clean and cabins were nicely appointed.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

Definitely a campground to visit at least once!

If you have a chance, definitely check out Goose Creek State Park. My husband, son, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and myself stayed at the park this past weekend, and we had a wonderful time. We stayed at campsite 11, and we had plenty of room for our two tents, two vehicles, a pup, a toddler, and the supplied picnic table, fire pit, and additional charcoal grill. The one negative about spot 11 is there’s a hiking trail that run directly behind the campsite, so it feels like people are constantly walking through your campsite. Spots 1-10 were definitely a bit smaller, and spots 11-14 are larger. If we were to stay again, I believe we’d try to stay at site 13.

The fishing dock is quite small, but it was fun to fish from with a few people. Be sure to bring bug spray! The worst for me was the biting flies. There is one outhouse-type bathroom near the dock with a spigot and dumpster nearby. There are about 10 steps leading up to the one-person, non-flushing bathroom.

There’s a wood station at the campground that uses the honor system. It’s $5 per bundle. We visited the visitors center in the hopes that they would have live bait for sell, but they sell nothing of the sort (no ice, bait, fishing rods, etc). So bring everything you need other than wood!

Overall, I’d give the campground 4.5/5, and I certainly recommend it! Try to stay in sites 11-14 if possible.

    Goose Creek State Park Campground

    Great and New Campground

Goose Creek State Park campground is one of the newer state parks in North Carolina. The RV part of the park has a great layout with large sites. The park is very flat with full hookups and a large patio/picnic area. They also have cabins.

We stayed at one of the full hook up RV sites with our Riverside Retro 199FKS and it actually looked small in the site. We had more than enough room.

You are far enough away from Washington, NC that you don't get great cell coverage so, it is almost like going off the grid. I think I had service if I sat outside with my left leg propped up (just kidding).

Since this park is so new, there are not many trees or vegetation to provide privacy between sites. I think this park will be great once the plants grow in - don't skip for this reason - still go, just know that you won't have a lot of privacy.

Great Island Cabin Camp — Cape Lookout National Seashore

    Worth it!

Took our ORVs on the ferry to the island and stayed in a cabin. The cabins come in different sizes but none have power. They have huts for generators to sit in to help with the noise. We brought a window a/c unit and it kept the place cool (highly recommend) had water, shower, toilet and gas kitchen. We rode our 4 wheelers down the 30+ mile beach. On one end of the island there's a historic museum like town and light house.

What to do

"There is also a swimming area that is free," notes one visitor, with another mentioning that "swim area was a little rough but the hiking trails and access to the river for kayaks and fishing was nice!"

The grass is very well kept, the roads and signage, well maintained," writes one visitor.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat affects comfort at some locations. "Nice overnight stay RV Campground new with no shade. Very clean. Beautiful river but not walking distance from campground. I'd say much better in the early spring or fall," advises a camper at Goose Creek Campground.

Limited supplies at remote locations: Great Island Cabin Camp requires advance planning. "The only on-island supplies are ice and gasoline, so you must pack in everything. Tap water is potable but tastes very desalinated, so bottled water is recommended," explains a visitor about this Cape Lookout National Seashore destination.

Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, securing spots early is essential. "We used New Bern KOA for our shakedown trip with our new RV. Easy in, full service, lots to do," explains a camper who benefited from planning ahead.

Water quality concerns: Some campgrounds have issues with drinking water taste. "Water quality: 1/5 potable but tastes gross," notes a reviewer about New Bern KOA, suggesting campers bring their own drinking water.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: New Bern KOA Holiday offers numerous recreational options. "Very family friendly, pool, nice clean sites, cabins, clean shower rooms, tons of activities for the kids and the staff are amazing!" shares one parent, highlighting facilities designed for children.

Swimming options: Pools provide supervised water recreation. "The pool is amazing! The slide is so fun! It has 3ft all the way to 6ft roped off sections in the pool!" reports an enthusiastic visitor to Goose Creek Campground.

Handicap accessibility: Some cabins accommodate special needs. At Great Island Cabin Camp, accessible options exist though visitors should call ahead to confirm current availability and accessibility features for specific cabins.

Tent space for larger groups: Many sites accommodate additional tents. "The camp sites are well maintained with a picnic table and fire pit area. Small gravel used on a dedicated tent area. We had a second larger tent on the site too," explains a Goose Creek State Park visitor who organized a birthday trip for teenagers.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: White Oak Shores provides more room than some alternatives. "We stayed in spot w33 which had a beautiful view of the water and plenty of space to stretch out behind the RV," shares one visitor who appreciated the extra room.

Hookup availability: Electric and water connections vary by location. "Standard sites are crammed together making privacy an issue. In our site we could not fully open our awning without it hanging over the neighbors site," notes a New Bern KOA visitor who recommends upgrading to deluxe sites for more space.

Long-term options: Some parks cater to extended stays with monthly rates. "Very nice place, well keep, nice paved streets, nice boat ramps, nice piers, nice laundry room, good cell service. WiFi available for $$ more," explains a Goose Creek Campground visitor who considered a month-long stay.
