Best RV Parks & Resorts near Saranac Lake, NY

RV parks around Saranac Lake provide varied accommodation options for motorhomes and travel trailers. Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks in North Hudson offers full hookup sites with 50-amp service and is big-rig friendly. "The sites were level, spotlessly clean and manicured, and had good water pressure and hookups," noted one visitor about a nearby KOA campground. Iroquois Campground & RV Park in Peru features water, electric, and sewer connections on sites open from May through October, while Shady Oaks Camping Resort near Plattsburgh has 100 sites with 30-amp service. Brookwood RV Resort in Ticonderoga accommodates large RVs with 50-amp hookups and remains open mid-May through mid-October.

Advance reservations are essential during peak summer and fall foliage seasons, as many campgrounds fill quickly. Most RV parks in the region offer dump stations, though amenities vary significantly between locations. Several campgrounds have restrictions on generator use, with quiet hours typically enforced after 10 PM. During shoulder seasons, water systems may be winterized at higher elevation campgrounds, limiting full hookup availability. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, some campground roads can be challenging for larger rigs due to low-hanging branches and tight turns. Pet policies differ between parks, with most allowing dogs but imposing breed or size restrictions. Cell service remains spotty throughout parts of the Adirondacks, particularly in valleys between mountains.

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Amazing

This is a Class A 5⭐️KOA Campsite! We arrived late and Jox & his sweet wife helped us manuever our RV into our pull through site B05. We were super close to the office, store, snacks, laundry & activities. Our site was a “ dirt” site that had a picnic table and fire pit with full hook ups. This campsite has concierge service that will help you out with any of your wants/needs. Great site in nature’s finest.

    Brown Tract Pond Campground

Just what we needed. Rustic peace.

Beautiful, peaceful large pond/small lake. Loons. Ducks and ducklings. Beaver. Canoes($20/day) and kayak rentals. Firewood for sale ($9?) or gather downed wood. Fishing. Large sandy Adirondack beach and day use area. Pet friendly. Very friendly staff. Clean, stocked bathrooms/toilet with sink and soap. Well located water spigots. Nearby trails. Dump station. Boat launch (no motorboats allowed).

No hookups. No onsite showers (can use another Golden Beach Campground showers a few miles away.) No cell or internet. Maybe wifi near entrance?

Easiest access is from Raquette Lake. From the west you will drive over 5 miles on a dirt road (slow going if towing).

    Meadowbrook Campground

Conveniently Located, but a bit Noisy

This is a very basic campground situated in a small village in the Adirondacks – situated between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. Every site has a picnic table and an open fire grill and most of the sites on the outer ring have a lot of privacy as they are lined with trees and shrubs. Lots of spaces for larger RV’s, but we saw mostly tent campers.

Bathrooms are mostly clean and the showers are nice. There is a quality dishwashing sink by the bathrooms. Overall, the campground is ok, but needs a bit of a facelift, repainting, etc. Also, you can hear the sounds of the city (cars, leaf blowers, and other things that remind you that you are not truly in the woods).

The best part about this campground is that it is conveniently located between two awesome places and is relatively inexpensive, so if you don’t plan to spend much time in the campground itself, it’s perfect.

We used this campground as a basecamp to mountain bike on an awesome trail just outside of Saranac Lake, the Bloomingdale Bog trail. The following day, we did a quadrathlon that involved kayaking the length of Lake Placid, hiking to the summit of Whiteface Mountain, kayaking back, and then finished the day at Lake Placid Pub and Brewery for dinner. Highly recommended, but plan on a 9-10 hour day on the lake/trail!

With its central location, this campground is close to everything you may need, most even within walking distance.

    Meadowbrook Campground

    Average campground great location

We stayed at Meadowbrook over Memorial Day weekend in 2024. It's an average campground, but has a really good location between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake.

Our site had the standard DEC picnic table and fire pit. There are showers (the hot water was broken the day we were there, but the attendant said we could go to nearby campgrounds to use theirs), toilets, and water spigots. I had decent Verizon signal.

The sites were clean, but the fire pit was showing its age. We stayed in site 37, which was a bit more private and surrounded by trees. The sites in the two loops closest to Rte 86 (#1-13, 27-34, and 51-62) were much closer together, and some didn't have trees between sites. Even at our more "isolated" site, we could still see our neighbors.

The bathroom was actually one of the nicest I've seen in a DEC campsite; it looked like it had recently been rebuilt.

There are positives and negatives about the location. On the plus side, there's ice cream and places to eat within walking distance. We also forgot lunch for our hike the next day and were able to walk to a convenience store to grab supplies. And if you're doing things in Lake Placid and Saranac, the location is tough to beat. On the minus side, there's a bit of road noise and some of the campsites looked like they had great views of a parking lot.

    Shelburne Camping Area

    Very nice owners...lovely campground!

We have a “big rig” 40’ 5th wheel with 4 slide outs. Called them same day from Capital Region Welcome Ctr in NY, about 3 hrs away (below Albany). They had a full hook up, pull-thru corner space for us. Offered parking for our truck right across lane on separate site. Super nice owners! Went over COVID questions and after hour check-in instructions. We came in just after it got dark. Loved town of Shelburne. Awesome little shops and great, well stocked little local grocery store. Authentic Italian restaurant in grocery store parking lot...picked up delicious strombolis. Due to COVID, mostly call ahead/pick-up or drive thru for many things...incl. delicious coffee in town at Village Wine & Coffee and AWESOME cider donuts at Shelburne Orchards! Only a 20 min drive into downtown Burlington. Took narrated tour on Ethan Allen ferry on Lake Champlain. Shopped in artsy town. Extended our stay for TWO extra nights. Will def come back. Didn’t need to use, but noted that bathrooms were immaculately clean.

    Wilmington Notch Campground

In the heart of the High Peaks

Wilmington Notch Campground is owned and operated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. There are approximately 50 sites available, all on level campground and within access of Both bathrooms and shower facilities. Fire pits and picnic tables available. About a mile down the road from the high falls gorge tourist destination and a quarter mile from the base of whiteface lodge ski resort. There is an accessible trail from the back of the campground to an amazing waterfall on the west branch of the Ausable River and plenty of spots to trout fish/swim. A mile down the road is flume falls trails, which leads to a great swimming hole and various height choice cliff jumping. This is a very clean and quiet campground, one of the best in the high peaks region for primitive camping

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Excellent Customer Service/Great Location/Loved It!

We just spent a full week at the North Pole Resorts the last week of May and through the Memorial Day Weekend. We are full-time travelers with a 40' Class A motorhome, flat tow a Jeep, have 2 kids (ages 8 & 13), and 2 English Bulldogs. We loved pulling in the week before the holiday weekend because there was hardly anyone else at the campground or in the area just yet. It does get packed over the holiday weekend, but was still very enjoyable and quiet at night. We were there right at the start of the season for them. ***Fair warning - Be sure to turn in by the North Pole Lodge Store and Mini Golf to register. We missed it and went past.*** We stayed in premium site 11 in the resort section and loved it. There was plenty of grassy room for the dogs to go out and we had a little cover over our picnic table. The kids enjoyed the arcade and playground being right there. We loved the store as it is one of the best we've seen yet & very well stocked. The location to area attractions was ideal as well. Lake Placid is maybe 20 minutes down the road and you can get groceries and have good restaurant choices too. Highly suggest the 45 minute drive to Ausable Chasm as well as the very short drive to the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. Another favorite activity was pulling off the road to explore the hiking & fishing. Quarry Pool Pond was our fave! Would absolutely be back!

    AuSable Chasm Campground

    Closest campground to Ausable Chasm

We travel in a 17-foot camper van, but no one ever believes that we are no bigger than a standard cargo van and can easily fit in a regular size parking space. Upon arrival at Ausable Chasm, we were told we had to take a site with water and electric since we had a camper van. These sites were $13 more per night and we really did not need the hookups. We were finally able to convince the staff that we could take a standard tent site, which was more than big enough.

The road through the campground is dirt and rutted but the speed limit is 5 mph, so it wasn’t that bad, but it would be a mess if it was raining.

Bathrooms and shower rooms are individual rooms, but the doors are not labeled so it’s a game of “what’s behind door number 1?”  There was no light in the shower room that I looked at so a night shower would be out of the question. The bathrooms were clean and had soap, paper towels, a garbage receptacle, and a mirror in each.

Lots of ant hills throughout the campground so be cautious where you set up a tent. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Large and nice-looking playground, pool, volleyball net, disc golf and mountain biking/hiking trails. It also looked like there were cross country ski trails but not sure if the campground or cabins would be open in the winter.

Biggest advantage is that Ausable Chasm(a separate business) is directly across the street from the campground and it is very close to the ferry that will take you to Burlington, VT, our next destination.

Guide to Saranac Lake

RV campgrounds near Saranac Lake, New York provide access to the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks where elevations reach over 4,000 feet in several locations. Most sites in the area are seasonal, typically operating from May through mid-October when temperatures range from 40°F nights to 80°F days. Heavy tree coverage characterizes many RV parks, creating natural privacy barriers between sites but sometimes presenting challenges for larger rigs.

What to do

Hiking trails: Multiple campgrounds provide access to nearby trails within the Adirondack Park's six million acres. One visitor at Camp Whiteface Mountain noted, "If you want a nice camping spot for exploring the Adirondacks this is it. Nestled in the trees by the Ausable River its a convenient place to explore the area."

Rail-biking excursions: Seasonal rail bike tours operate from North Creek and Lake Placid areas, accessible from several campgrounds. A camper at Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks mentioned, "Close to beautiful hiking, lake activities and rail bikes. We can't wait to come back!"

Gem mining activities: Some campgrounds offer on-site mining experiences where guests can purchase material to sift through for semi-precious stones. A visitor shared, "Being a fan of gems, I definitely bought an embarrassing amount of dirt for the gem mining. Got some good finds, so worth it!"

What campers like

Riverfront locations: Several parks feature waterfront sites along rivers or streams. A visitor at Babbling Brook RV Park stated, "This place is a paradise. Located near river," while another commented on the "Riverfront town park. Nice for families."

Secluded waterfall access: Some campgrounds offer private water features not available to the general public. A camper at Davey Falls ADK described it as an "Amazing secluded creekside spot. Private waterfall, hiking trails."

Level sites: Many campers appreciate the terrain preparation at area campgrounds. At Brookwood RV Resort, one reviewer specifically mentioned the "Level, shaded site" as a key benefit of their stay.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Reception varies significantly throughout the region. At Brookwood RV Resort, a camper reported, "We got crappy cell service, and the camp wifi was spotty- but hey, we were camping, right?"

Shower availability: Some parks maintain limited shower facilities. A reviewer at Shady Oaks noted only a few shower stalls were operational, while other campgrounds close facilities to guests with self-contained units during water conservation periods.

Weather considerations: The Adirondack region experiences rapid temperature changes, especially in spring and fall. At Thornbush Acres RV Park, one camper mentioned the location was "Great for Day trips around the area" but recommended preparation for variable conditions.

Tips for camping with families

Pool restrictions: Some campgrounds employ lifeguards with varying levels of attentiveness. One reviewer expressed concern about pool supervision, noting a lifeguard was "face down in her phone with one hand, holding her sunglasses up with her other hand, while 3 small children were sliding and playing unsupervised."

Pet-friendly options: Many parks welcome dogs but have specific areas or rules. A camper with multiple pets at Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks shared, "Husband and I took a trip with all 3 pups and I couldn't even tell you who had more fun! The doggos and husband absolutely loved being able to walk the beautiful trail in the cooler weather."

Playground conditions: Check recent reviews for current playground status. Several campers noted that during 2020-2021, many recreational facilities were closed or had limited access. Some older playgrounds may not be well-maintained.

Tips from RVers

Sewage system awareness: Infrastructure upgrades may cause temporary inconveniences. One camper mentioned, "Our friends were in RVs and apparently the site was digging for new sewer lines, so when the wind shifted, we got a fresh scent of raw sewage."

Morning maintenance schedules: Some campgrounds perform grounds work early in the day. A visitor noted, "Lawn mowing started at 8:15 am. The grass absolutely did not need to be mowed. Very loud stand behind rider mower that kicked up dust."

Site selection strategy: At Iroquois Campground & RV Park, a reviewer observed, "Sites somewhat small and tight but there are some larger sites." Request site maps and measurements when making reservations, especially for larger RVs.
