What to do
Hiking at nearby trails: Taughannock Falls State Park has several well-maintained trails leading to one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. "The falls trails were all well defined and excellent for a beginner, moderate hiker. More advanced trails were also offered as well as biking trails, so plenty for any level of adventurer," notes Steve W. in his review of Taughannock Falls State Park Campground.
Fishing in Cayuga Lake: The lake offers abundant fishing opportunities year-round with several species available. "My campsite was very clean and was well equipped with a fire ring picnic table and a restroom nearby. There was a lot of seed weed washed up and you can smell it. That was the only downside. The night is very quiet and and a nice breeze," shares Kevin T. about his fishing experience at Cayuga Lake.
Visit historic sites: The region features several historical attractions including the former Naval training base at Sampson State Park Campground. "It was a Naval training base during WWll. About 45 minutes from Rochester and about hr and half from Syracuse. It has a Naval museum with many authentic items from that era," explains Brian O. in his review.
Swimming in designated areas: Many campgrounds feature swimming beaches with lifeguards during summer months. "Swimming is available at the large beach. You can rent a kayak and enjoy the beautiful lake. There are miles of trails to explore," mentions Cindy H. about Green Lakes State Park.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Sites at several campgrounds provide ample room without feeling crowded. "We stayed in the 800 loop along the tree line. Sites were very spacious! Great camping location with plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy or just sit and enjoy the peace," writes Colleen M. about Cayuga Lake State Park.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain clean restrooms and shower facilities. "The bathrooms have been remodeled and most are private with a toilet, shower and sink which makes this a wonderful family campground," states Sheri S. about Green Lakes State Park Campground.
Lake access: Direct access to lakes for swimming, fishing and boating ranks high among camper preferences. "The lake is gorgeous, and if you go at the right time of year, the flowers are blooming and it's just amazing. The campsites are pretty close together, so it does lack some privacy from your neighbors, but I felt like I was hardly around my campsite to even notice. I was too busy playing in the lake, hiking, and riding my bike on some paths," shares Kari M.
Proximity to attractions: Convenient location near wineries, waterfalls and towns makes Port Byron camping appealing. "The location is perfect for exploring the Finger Lakes region, with wineries, hiking, and local attractions just a short drive away," notes Rui T. about Sned Acres Campground.
