Best RV Parks & Resorts near Paul Smiths, NY

Multiple RV parks operate in the Paul Smiths region, offering full hookup options for motorhome travelers. Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks provides 50-amp electric service and accommodates larger vehicles on its big rig friendly sites. Iron City RV Park features electric hookups and sanitary dump stations but lacks fifty-amp service for larger motorhomes. Babbling Brook RV Park, open May through September, offers full-service RV sites with water, sewer, and electrical connections in Fort Covington. Shady Oaks Camping Resort maintains 100 campsites with thirty-amp hookups and water connections in Plattsburgh. "The sites are varied as to size and desirability, not all are level for trailers and rv's, so do some research ahead of time to find the spot that is perfect for you."

Many RV campgrounds in the Adirondacks region feature gravel pads rather than concrete, with varying degrees of levelness. During peak fall foliage season, reservations become essential as parks fill quickly with leaf-peepers seeking mountain views. Most parks maintain three-lane dump stations for RV waste disposal, though amenities vary significantly between locations. Access roads to several mountain campgrounds involve navigating elevation changes and occasional sharp turns, which may challenge drivers of larger motorhomes. Propane is not readily available at most parks, requiring advance planning. According to one visitor, "We were in site #147 which was huge and had easy access to the lake with our kayaks, and had a water spigot between it and the next site. No w/e/s hookups at any of the sites, but there is a three-lane dump station for your convenience if you are in an RV."

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Amazing

This is a Class A 5⭐️KOA Campsite! We arrived late and Jox & his sweet wife helped us manuever our RV into our pull through site B05. We were super close to the office, store, snacks, laundry & activities. Our site was a “ dirt” site that had a picnic table and fire pit with full hook ups. This campsite has concierge service that will help you out with any of your wants/needs. Great site in nature’s finest.

    Brown Tract Pond Campground

Just what we needed. Rustic peace.

Beautiful, peaceful large pond/small lake. Loons. Ducks and ducklings. Beaver. Canoes($20/day) and kayak rentals. Firewood for sale ($9?) or gather downed wood. Fishing. Large sandy Adirondack beach and day use area. Pet friendly. Very friendly staff. Clean, stocked bathrooms/toilet with sink and soap. Well located water spigots. Nearby trails. Dump station. Boat launch (no motorboats allowed).

No hookups. No onsite showers (can use another Golden Beach Campground showers a few miles away.) No cell or internet. Maybe wifi near entrance?

Easiest access is from Raquette Lake. From the west you will drive over 5 miles on a dirt road (slow going if towing).

    Buck Pond Campground

    Large, semi private sites

Is there anything nicer than the Adirondacks in late summer?  Buck Pond is a quiet, sublime campground about 20 minutes from Paul Smiths College.  The sites are sandy and our site was mostly flat.  Some sites do have an uphill driveway lined with trees.  If you have an RV, looking at the site on ReserveAmerica.com might be the way to go.  We didn't see any sites with electricity and there is one outlet in the bathroom area (I plugged my coffee percolator into this outlet every morning).  The shower could use an update and definitely bring some shoes to shower in and a mat/towel for the floor as it gets slippery when wet.  The bathroom area has one sink with no shelving so carrying your necessities in a shower caddy especially when you have kids that need to brush their teeth.  Sites are large enough to have an RV, a canopy, and a small tent, or several tents.  There is a canoe/kayak rental at the campground as well as a beach.  A place to buy wood on the honor system is a 5-minute drive from the campground, and there is a Walmart about 35 minutes away.  If you eat dairy, you can't miss a drive to Donnelly's Soft Ice Cream where only one flavor is served each day and standing line is worth the wait.  We're looking forward to staying here again, even without electricity!

    Wilmington Notch Campground

In the heart of the High Peaks

Wilmington Notch Campground is owned and operated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. There are approximately 50 sites available, all on level campground and within access of Both bathrooms and shower facilities. Fire pits and picnic tables available. About a mile down the road from the high falls gorge tourist destination and a quarter mile from the base of whiteface lodge ski resort. There is an accessible trail from the back of the campground to an amazing waterfall on the west branch of the Ausable River and plenty of spots to trout fish/swim. A mile down the road is flume falls trails, which leads to a great swimming hole and various height choice cliff jumping. This is a very clean and quiet campground, one of the best in the high peaks region for primitive camping

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Excellent Customer Service/Great Location/Loved It!

We just spent a full week at the North Pole Resorts the last week of May and through the Memorial Day Weekend. We are full-time travelers with a 40' Class A motorhome, flat tow a Jeep, have 2 kids (ages 8 & 13), and 2 English Bulldogs. We loved pulling in the week before the holiday weekend because there was hardly anyone else at the campground or in the area just yet. It does get packed over the holiday weekend, but was still very enjoyable and quiet at night. We were there right at the start of the season for them. ***Fair warning - Be sure to turn in by the North Pole Lodge Store and Mini Golf to register. We missed it and went past.*** We stayed in premium site 11 in the resort section and loved it. There was plenty of grassy room for the dogs to go out and we had a little cover over our picnic table. The kids enjoyed the arcade and playground being right there. We loved the store as it is one of the best we've seen yet & very well stocked. The location to area attractions was ideal as well. Lake Placid is maybe 20 minutes down the road and you can get groceries and have good restaurant choices too. Highly suggest the 45 minute drive to Ausable Chasm as well as the very short drive to the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. Another favorite activity was pulling off the road to explore the hiking & fishing. Quarry Pool Pond was our fave! Would absolutely be back!

    AuSable Chasm Campground

    Closest campground to Ausable Chasm

We travel in a 17-foot camper van, but no one ever believes that we are no bigger than a standard cargo van and can easily fit in a regular size parking space. Upon arrival at Ausable Chasm, we were told we had to take a site with water and electric since we had a camper van. These sites were $13 more per night and we really did not need the hookups. We were finally able to convince the staff that we could take a standard tent site, which was more than big enough.

The road through the campground is dirt and rutted but the speed limit is 5 mph, so it wasn’t that bad, but it would be a mess if it was raining.

Bathrooms and shower rooms are individual rooms, but the doors are not labeled so it’s a game of “what’s behind door number 1?”  There was no light in the shower room that I looked at so a night shower would be out of the question. The bathrooms were clean and had soap, paper towels, a garbage receptacle, and a mirror in each.

Lots of ant hills throughout the campground so be cautious where you set up a tent. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Large and nice-looking playground, pool, volleyball net, disc golf and mountain biking/hiking trails. It also looked like there were cross country ski trails but not sure if the campground or cabins would be open in the winter.

Biggest advantage is that Ausable Chasm(a separate business) is directly across the street from the campground and it is very close to the ferry that will take you to Burlington, VT, our next destination.

    Fish Creek Pond Campground

    A little slice of heaven

I have stayed here many times over the years, usually for a 10-18 day stretch at a time. This is one of my favorite places. Most sites are right on the water. Square pond is a lovely little lake that connects to a larger lake (Upper Saranac I believe) by passing through a canal. This campground has great facilities. There are restrooms located convieniently throughout the park so you never have to walk more than a few sites no matter where you are. There are hot showers located at one end of the park and a dump station for RVs. The restrooms and showers are cleaned daily. There is a great little general store just outside the park that sells pretty much anything you could want. Sites are equipped with a table and fireplace (most have grates). There are vendors that drive through the park daily selling wood, ice cream (from an old fashioned wagon, get the moose tracks!), and ice. There is a boat supplier that travels the lake every morning and evening dropping off and picking up kayak and canoe rentals. If you love water front camping this is for you! The park is pet friendly but you need to show proof of vaccines. There are great things to do nearby like the Adirondack Museum, Lake Placid, and beautiful hiking spots. You can have power boats and jets skis on the lake as well as non motorized boats. Some of the best sunsets I have ever viewed happened right here. Quiet hours are taken very seriously and rangers walk the park at night warning rowdy fireside folks to quiet down. However, as dusk turns to night, you can always count on the chorus of yodels going back and forth across the lake. This is a wonderful spot! Check it out! You won’t be sorry! Oh, but sites go on sale nine months in advance through reserve America and the best spots wind up booked for the season pretty quickly.

    Draper’s Acres

    Great spot amongst the Adirondacks

We had a full hookup, pull through site surrounded by trees. There was some road noise during the day but it was nice and quiet at night. The bathhouses looked very "rustic" but we didn't use them. Nice field, swings and small palyground for kids. Close to hiking and Lake Placid!

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Nice location, well kept

Stayed for two nights, great campsite, awesome sites. We got, unexpectedly, a nice pull through, full hookups all close together so easy setup. Our site wasn't level but only required a small adjustment. Good cell coverage and excellent Wi-Fi. There were plenty of open spots while we were there. Definitely reccomended.

Guide to Paul Smiths

Adirondack RV sites near Paul Smiths, New York offer diverse camping options within the region's mixed coniferous-deciduous forest zone at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 feet. Winter temperatures regularly drop below zero, while summer daytime highs typically reach the 70s with cooler nights. Most campgrounds in this area operate seasonally from May through early October due to harsh winter conditions.

What to do

River activities: The Babbling Brook RV Park offers riverfront access for water activities. "This place is a paradise. Located near river," according to reviewer Ioan P., making it ideal for fishing or relaxing by the water.

Gem mining experiences: Children can enjoy gem mining activities at Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks. One camper notes, "The kids loved the gem mining and train rides!! We enjoyed the water view and the staff was so nice to us!" The campground also offers train rides that circle the property, adding to the family entertainment options.

Hiking trails: Access nearby mountain trails directly from some campgrounds. At Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday, campers appreciate the convenient trail access: "Behind the 100-Acre section are trails that lead to Whiteface Mountain so you don't have to get in the car to start a hike." The campground's location makes it an excellent base for exploring the Adirondack region.

What campers like

Private wooded sites: Campers appreciate the natural setting at many RV parks. At Wilmington Notch Campground, "Campsites are generally spacious, with different options for shade/sun and ground cover (grass or pine needles)." The variety allows campers to choose sites that match their preferences.

Swimming opportunities: Several campgrounds feature swimming areas. Wilmington Notch Campground offers water access, with one camper mentioning, "a quarter mile from the base of whiteface lodge ski resort. There is an accessible trail from the back of the campground to an amazing waterfall on the west branch of the Ausable River and plenty of spots to trout fish/swim."

Quiet atmosphere: Many RV sites maintain a peaceful environment. At Thornbush Acres RV Park, reviewers note it's "Quiet, more for Adults" and "mostly seasonal nice and quiet. Basic sites with amenities. Very roomy and spacious." This makes it ideal for campers seeking a more relaxed experience.

What you should know

Site conditions vary significantly: Level sites can be hard to find at some campgrounds. A reviewer at Iroquois Campground & RV Park notes, "Sites somewhat small and tight but there are some larger sites." Always research specific site dimensions before booking.

Internet connectivity challenges: Wifi service is unreliable at many campgrounds. One camper at Iroquois Campground & RV Park reported, "Wifi at campsite was inconsistent and unreliable. Had to work from rec center and pool which was ok but not what we were told."

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies between campgrounds. At Wilmington Notch, one camper mentioned, "Bathrooms are a bit run down but great value for how much it costs!" while another noted, "Bathroom conditions vary at the campground depending on who the staff is from year to year."

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with activities: Some RV parks near Paul Smiths offer family-oriented amenities. According to a visitor at Camp Whiteface Mountain, "If you want a nice camping spot for exploring the Adirondacks this is it. Nestled in the trees by the Ausable River its a convenient place to explore the area." Its location provides good access to family-friendly activities.

Consider seasonal timing: Most facilities operate only during warmer months. Babbling Brook RV Park runs "May to September 30," while many others have similar seasonal restrictions due to harsh Adirondack winters.

Pet policies differ: Many but not all campgrounds welcome pets. At Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks, one camper shared, "Husband and I took a trip with all 3 pups and I couldn't even tell you who had more fun!! The doggos and husband absolutely loved being able to walk the beautiful trail in the cooler weather."

Tips from RVers

Water hookup adapters: Come prepared with connection equipment. At Wilmington Notch Campground, one RVer advised, "Luckily I had a water bandit, as the water spigot does not have threads for a hose."

Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on specific needs. At Plattsburgh RV Park, one camper noted, "This Park was very nice, it has a real homey feel with mini golf, community hall, and pool. Most of the sites seemed seasonal." Understanding the mix of seasonal versus overnight sites helps with planning.

Road conditions: Access can be challenging for larger vehicles. One RVer at Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday warned, "The roads are really tight for big rigs. Between the trees, rocks, and low hanging branches, you have to take it really slow. I recommend unhooking your tow car at check-in so you are free to back up."
