The Manchester area maintains nearly 200 days of precipitation annually, with summer highs typically reaching 80-85°F. Camping options range from established campgrounds with modern amenities to more rustic sites nestled among the region's distinctive rolling hills. Several campgrounds operate seasonally from April through October, closing during winter months due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.
What to do
Hiking and nature trails: Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill offers numerous trails for outdoor enthusiasts. "Hiking, bike trails, fishing pond, playground, open fields for sports, much more!!! Great for photo shoots, weekend stress getaways etc. I live close by and visit a few times a month," shares Sarah C.
Water activities: Sampson State Park Campground provides access to swimming, fishing and boating on Seneca Lake. "Marina convenience store with pontoon boat rentals, fishing, swimming, ice cream and concessions stand," notes Amanda K. about the amenities available.
Military history: History buffs appreciate the educational opportunities in the area. "It has a Naval museum with many authentic items from that era. Very shady and ample bathroom, shower, and water facilities," Brian O. explains about Sampson State Park's historical significance as a former Naval training base.
What campers like
Privacy levels: Site selection can significantly impact your experience. At Webster Park, "Camp sites are wooded and private. Very quiet and peaceful. Clean and well maintained," according to Amanda M., highlighting the secluded nature of the sites.
Seasonal variety: Different times of year offer unique experiences. "This is beautiful, clean and affordable camping near Naples, NY. Lots of trails at the park for hikers, mountain bikers and trail runners. Follow the Finger Lakes Trail all the way into town," Danielle P. recommends regarding Ontario County Park.
Family-friendly amenities: Lake Bluff RV Park caters to families with children. "Kids activities are great. Even with COVID they have stuff to keep them busy. Large wooded sites are our favorite as well," Victoria shares, noting the campground's focus on entertainment for younger guests.
What you should know
Site layout considerations: At Junius Ponds, "The roads are narrow and hilly, but we pull a 36' 5th wheel (mid-profile) and we had no issues with branches. They had a oversized, long pull through available (site 88) that made entering and exiting the site nice and easy," explains Kristine B.
Reservation requirements: Popularity varies by location. "Most of the sites are for seasonal guests so it can be difficult to get a reservation," warns Kimberlee P. about Junius Ponds, suggesting advance planning is essential.
Weather preparedness: The Manchester region experiences significant rainfall. "Bring lots of bugspray and fire starters as it does rain up here which affects the fire wood," Jeremy T. advises about camping at Cayuga Lake State Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Consider site proximity to play areas when booking. "Our first KOA stop, so can't compare to other KOAs, but this place has a good number of family activities and events. Our 3 and 5 year olds really enjoyed the jump pad and woods obstacles," Greg S. notes about Canandaigua-Rochester KOA.
Water recreation: Swimming areas provide welcome relief during summer months. "Canandaigua is a really cool little town too and has a beautiful lakefront park with beach and playground, only ten minutes from this campground. The water in Lake Canandaigua was very clear!" adds Greg S.
Weekend activities: Many campgrounds offer scheduled events. "They offer themed weekends and have activities for kids," Amy T. shares about Junius Ponds, making it ideal for families seeking structured entertainment.
Tips from RVers
Hookup challenges: Electric setup varies between campgrounds. "Electric service boxes are shared in-between sites. This could pose an issue if your power cord is not long enough," cautions Amanda K. about Sampson State Park.
Water access: Water stations may be limited. "There is only one source for water fill up. This could end up being a very very long wait if you arrive at the same time as other campers," continues Amanda K. about Sampson State Park, highlighting potential logistical challenges.
Site levelness: Bring equipment for uneven terrain. "Also make sure to bring plenty of leveling blocks as some sites are far from level," advises Jonathan G. when glamping close to Manchester, New York at Ontario County Park.
