Best RV Parks & Resorts near Essex, NY

Several RV campgrounds accommodate large motorhomes near Essex, with varying levels of hookups and amenities. Brookwood RV Resort in Ticonderoga offers full hookup sites with 50-amp electric service and operates from May through mid-October. Iroquois Campground & RV Park in Peru features big-rig friendly sites with water, electric, sewer connections, and 50-amp service on level gravel pads. Plattsburgh RV Park provides seasonal camping from May to mid-October with 50-amp hookups for larger rigs. Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks accommodates big rigs with both 30 and 50-amp electric options. "We had a full hookup, pull through site surrounded by trees. There was some road noise during the day but it was nice and quiet at night," one camper shared about their Adirondack camping experience.

Advance reservations are strongly recommended during summer and fall foliage seasons when campgrounds reach capacity. Most RV parks in the region offer sanitary dump stations, although availability varies between facilities. Cell service can be inconsistent throughout the Adirondack region, with campgrounds closer to Lake Champlain generally providing better connectivity. Many parks welcome pets with proper documentation, but restrictions may apply at specific sites. Shady Oaks Camping Resort maintains 100 sites with 30-amp service and full hookups, though some visitors note the proximity between neighboring sites can be tight. Winter camping options are limited, as most facilities close by mid-October and reopen in May when weather conditions improve for RV travel on mountain roads.

    Abel Mountain Campground

    Great Mid Week Adventure

My husband and I are seniors and spent 3 nights, Tuesday to Friday in June on site 51. Abel Mtn. Campground was easy enough to find. We have a 21' travel trailer and took advantage of the full hookups that most of the sites provide, including our first time using cable TV. As everyone else who reviews this place said, the owners are the first pleasure you find there. There's a heated pool, strong WiFi at your site, tons of clean river sites, immaculate rest rooms with an accessible ramp and lots of showers. For activities, you can hike on trails across the foot bridge and fish in many places along the river. They recycle everything possible and even provide composting of plant based waste. We have rarely found a returnable bottles and cans container so finding that and even composting is a notch well above the competition. Being the middle of June, there were no kids around but the photos and the two playgrounds tell us kids must love the place. Sites are back-in and very level on gravel pads. We highly recommend the place. Oh and a word to the wise, you will hear a train go by somewhere and the whistle will wake you up but no worries, it's all part of the ambiance.

    Lake Bomoseen KOA

Fun, crowded, and running out of steam

This is a solid, family-friendly campground. It has the standard amenities plus some fun extras (arcade, mini-golf, boat rentals, etc.). However, all amenities are in worn shape. The playground is approaching dangerous, for instance (metal pipe sticking out of sandbox?) and the arcade was largely broken (ate a lot of quarters). Granted we were there for the last weekend of the camping season, but these appear to be longer term issues.

The camp store was great. Service was helpful and friendly.

Odd $10 CASH deposit for gate key that no one asked for. No ATM on site to get cash…

The sites are spacious enough, but are very close to each other. Zero buffer between neighboring sites means encroaching slide outs.

Cell services on ATT and TMobile were nonexistent. Campground WiFi is a joke (less than 1mbps).

Beautiful views of lake down by the dock, but campsites have no view.

Easy access to several great hikes and local restaurants.

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Amazing

This is a Class A 5⭐️KOA Campsite! We arrived late and Jox & his sweet wife helped us manuever our RV into our pull through site B05. We were super close to the office, store, snacks, laundry & activities. Our site was a “ dirt” site that had a picnic table and fire pit with full hook ups. This campsite has concierge service that will help you out with any of your wants/needs. Great site in nature’s finest.

    Lake Bomoseen KOA

    Many Features But Road Noise

The Campground has a nice staff, a very well appointed general store, laundry, arcade, marina with boat rentals, mini theater, and indoor mini put. Most of the sites are wooded and nice. Somehow we managed to get the one pull through spot that was at the end and harder to get in. I was surprised how much road noise we heard inside of our trailer. The internet speed fluxuates and was slow to unusable our last day. I could not get the cable TV working. All in all it is a nice Campground and most of it (the back in spaces) look nice and wooded. I would stay here again despite the small inconveniences but I would definately pick a different camp site. Again, you will hear some road noise.

    Abel Mountain Campground

    Quiet and relaxing

I spent a couple of days at Abel Mountain with my dog, and we both had a nice stay. The campground is quiet and relaxing with plenty of space and a beautiful river that kept my dog entertained for hours. I was at site 72, an easy pull-through with plenty of shade.

Wifi was decent, cable hook-up did not provide a clear picture, and Verizon cell service was minimal.

Close to Randolph for groceries and take-out. The Barn gas station complex off of Exit 4 was perfect for fueling-up before getting back on the road.

Excellent military discount - 25%, so the stay was similar in cost to staying on at a military base's Famcamp.

If I'm ever back in Vermont, I'll probably stay here again.

    Shelburne Camping Area

    Very nice owners...lovely campground!

We have a “big rig” 40’ 5th wheel with 4 slide outs. Called them same day from Capital Region Welcome Ctr in NY, about 3 hrs away (below Albany). They had a full hook up, pull-thru corner space for us. Offered parking for our truck right across lane on separate site. Super nice owners! Went over COVID questions and after hour check-in instructions. We came in just after it got dark. Loved town of Shelburne. Awesome little shops and great, well stocked little local grocery store. Authentic Italian restaurant in grocery store parking lot...picked up delicious strombolis. Due to COVID, mostly call ahead/pick-up or drive thru for many things...incl. delicious coffee in town at Village Wine & Coffee and AWESOME cider donuts at Shelburne Orchards! Only a 20 min drive into downtown Burlington. Took narrated tour on Ethan Allen ferry on Lake Champlain. Shopped in artsy town. Extended our stay for TWO extra nights. Will def come back. Didn’t need to use, but noted that bathrooms were immaculately clean.

    Wilmington Notch Campground

In the heart of the High Peaks

Wilmington Notch Campground is owned and operated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. There are approximately 50 sites available, all on level campground and within access of Both bathrooms and shower facilities. Fire pits and picnic tables available. About a mile down the road from the high falls gorge tourist destination and a quarter mile from the base of whiteface lodge ski resort. There is an accessible trail from the back of the campground to an amazing waterfall on the west branch of the Ausable River and plenty of spots to trout fish/swim. A mile down the road is flume falls trails, which leads to a great swimming hole and various height choice cliff jumping. This is a very clean and quiet campground, one of the best in the high peaks region for primitive camping

Guide to Essex

Adirondack RV camping near Essex, New York offers travelers access to both mountain vistas and Lake Champlain waterfront sites within a 30-mile radius. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months from June through September. Campgrounds at various elevations provide different weather patterns, with higher elevation sites experiencing cooler nighttime temperatures even during summer months.

What to do

Lake activities: Alburg RV Resort on Lake Champlain provides water recreation opportunities with its boat ramp and docks. "There is a boat ramp and docks onsite yet the docks aren't part of the resort. They do have an area you can store your boat and trailer... There is a big long sandy beach," notes camper B M.

Historical exploration: Visit Fort Ticonderoga near Brookwood RV Resort, just 15 miles from Essex. "Ft Ticonderoga is a few miles to the north where you can explore history with re-enactors," explains Jean C. The fort offers daily tours and military demonstrations from May through October.

Mountain recreation: Hiking trails and mountain activities are accessible from campsites in the western Adirondacks. A Davey Falls ADK visitor reports, "Perfect location to explore eastern Adk," with private waterfall access and hiking trails directly from the property.

What campers like

Waterfront access: The region's lakes provide popular swimming areas during summer months. "This is one big Rv Resort on Lake Champlain... There is a big long sandy beach, a rec hall, and lots of games to play," reports one Alburg visitor about the amenities.

Quiet environment: Smugglers Notch RV Village offers a peaceful setting with mountain backdrops. "At Smugglers Notch RV Resort you have the Mountains as your Canvas and the beautiful campground your Palette for color. We love it here. So close to Stowe and a lot to do," shares Catie B.

Pool facilities: Several campgrounds maintain swimming pools for guests when lake temperatures are cool. "The pool was packed yet felt good. The place is maintained well and very clean. There is a big playground which keeps the kids busy," notes a visitor to Alburg RV Resort.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the region operate from May through mid-October due to winter conditions. Shady Oaks Camping Resort runs from "May 1 - Sep 30" according to their listing, with 100 sites available during operating months.

Site spacing: Space between sites varies significantly between campgrounds. "The sites are tighter than we like," mentions an Alburg RV Resort visitor, while a Brookwood RV camper notes, "Sites were really wooded, quiet, level, and spread out."

Internet connectivity: WiFi quality differs between facilities. "Wifi at campsite was inconsistent and unreliable. Had to work from rec center and pool which was ok but not what we were told," reports Kirsty W. about Iroquois Campground. Another camper at Brookwood notes, "We got crappy cell service, and the camp wifi was spotty- but hey, we were camping, right?"

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds maintain playground equipment for younger visitors. "There is a big playground which keeps the kids busy," notes a camper at Alburg RV Resort, making it suitable for families with children needing physical activity.

Pet policies: Many but not all campgrounds welcome family pets. "Husband and I took a trip with all 3 pups and I couldn't even tell you who had more fun!! The doggos and husband absolutely loved being able to walk the beautiful trail in the cooler weather, especially the husky," shares Krys M. about their stay at Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks.
