    Stony MT Family Campground

    We’d do it again!

Not cheap but we’ll within area norms. This camp has many long term campers that are friendly and helpful and some have children with them. Some full-time rigs are weekend campers. Some weekend events are planned. Most sites have full hookups with 50 amp electric only so if needed have an adapter (available at the small camp store. We had an unplanned extension on our visit that included a weekend where a group was scheduled and the park was booked including our site. The friendly staff worked to ensure a temporary site for us for the weekend.

    Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground

Great campground in PA northern tier

The owners do a fantastic job keeping the campground shipshape. Restrooms/showers are immaculate any time of day. Heated swimming pool and the splash pad for kiddies is spotless as well. Nice, pull-through on gravel pad withfull-hookups that can take large rigs. Lake is lovely for fishing/kayaks/canoes. Seasonal campers are tidy. Only a few tent sites with water & electricity tucked into woods. Larger pull-through sites don't get a lot of shade, but there are back-in sites for shorter campers in wooded sites and shaded lake front, as well. Campground store sells ice-cream & nachos and supplies. Campground is pretty quiet during the week, but fills up on weekends with guests using own (or renting) golf carts. Activities on weekends. The campground sits atop one of NEPA's "rolling hills" in quiet, rural farming area. Cell service is spotty. Local winery/cafe just down the road for tastings and lunch. Row boat, paddle boat rentals.

    Chenango Valley State Park Campground

Well maintained NY state campground; good for family camping

We were just passing through on a rainy night, but this park would be a good choice for a multi-night stay.

    Activities for a Multi-Day Stay

    • Swimming in the lake, golfing, boating, fishing, multi-use trails for hiking or mountain biking

    • You're only about 20 minutes from the Binghamton/Johnson City area. For us, that means food and craft beer.

Sites in the Chipmunk Camping Area

    • Parking pads in the non-electric section are dirt/grass. Some of the pads are short; this section is geared toward tent campers. We found a site long enough to easily accommodate our vehicle and teardrop trailer (30 ft total) since we didn't want to detach for a one night stay. Even if the pad wasn't that long, there are other pads wide enough to handle a vehicle and trailer like ours side by side.

    • Parking pads in the electric loops (30 amps and 50 amps) have a good amount of gravel.

    • We usually prefer sites on the outer part of a loop, and this was no exception. The sites have more trees.

    Amenities

    • Electricity at about 1/3 of the sites

    • Pretty good restrooms/showers

    • Water spigots on the loops and more water at the dump station

    • Trash disposal

    • Playground at the beach area, not the campground

    Wildlife

    • Beware of raccoons. They are brazen thieves here...and every campground they inhabit. Just don't leave your food out.

    • The park brochure warns of the occasional bear but that's true even in towns all over NY. I doubt you'll see one.

    • Deer are all over. Watch out for them on the roads. We had four that were feeding behind our site in the morning.

    Montrose Campground

Family and pet friendly year-around campground

We tried this campground a few times for short stays and ended up going seasonal last year and will do the same this year. It is a little off the beaten path but is great for families (plenty of activities for kids) and pets (our dog LOVES it there). They have a pool, fishing pond, hiking trails, mini golf, playground, large grassy areas for kids to play, and horseshoe pits. There is a store (stocked with grocery staples/snacks but also TONS of RV specific supplies/parts), laundry and showers (a new and improved bath house is currently being built). There are planned activities almost every weekend during the 'season' but they are open all year with some winter sites available. They have all sites available from tent right up to 50 amp full hook-ups. I can't wait for the new season to begin in April!

    Lackawanna State Park Campground

    Nice Lake, Small Campsites

Camped here for a weekend, and probably one of my least favorite sites so far. Hiking trails are good, the lake is nice, but there is no privacy at the campsites; they're all very small and packed tight. Two electric hookups would trip the 50 amp circuit breaker on any load about 30 amps, which means the hookups are old and unmaintained. Park rangers are hawkish and quick to assume wrongdoing.

Cell service covers the area, if you care. And no gas boats are allowed on the lake (cool!).

    Salt Springs State Park Campground

Unique park with unique natural features

This park is technically a “state park” because the land for it was donated to the state for public use. However, once the state became the official stewards, there werent funds in the state budget to maintain it as a park. A lical group, the Friends of Salt Springs, stepped up and offered to maintain the park with funds raised by their group. The result is a small but unique property open to the public for day use (picnicking and hiking and fishing) along with 2 small rustic campgrounds. One campground has a large open mowed grassy meadow with level sites for car camping or small campers, no hookups are available but each site has a fire ring and picnic table. On the other side of the parks trout stream are seven secluded primitive hike-in tent sites along with three basic camper cabins. The Friends of Salt Springs makes a good effort to maintain these two rustic campgrounds, however it seems there isnt a ranger on site at night so a camper said the meadow campground can get a little noisy some nights. The hike in sites are relatively quiet and secluded though, and are positioned nicely along the stream, one site actually adjacent to a good swimming hole.

The camper cabins are basic with bunks, bring all your own gear. They are fairly new and have electricity but no water or heat.

On the grounds in the day use area are picnic spits, a pavilion, and an activity barn. When I was there, the barn was featuring a local quilt show.

The special aspect of this park are the hiking trails through old growth hemlock forest, said to be the largest hemlocks in Pennsylvania. The trout stream also cascades through some some waterfalls, and there are gorges with unique geology.

There is a village nearby with limited supplies, you may want to stock up on groceries before heading out to this somewhat remote park. There is, however, a local brewery, plus an odd coffee shop featuring both donuts and ammo, an unusual combination…..

    Kellystone Park Campsite

    Away from it all!

Nice, field style campground, away from everything. They have nice events every other Saturday during summer. Pool, playground and a nice little store on site. Had everything we needed, FHU, 50 amp, large pull through sites.

Located in Tompkins County, Ithaca New York has beautiful gorges and hiking trails. Robert Treman is a treat and a gorgeous place to camp in the Ithaca, NY area. There are endless waterfalls, hiking trails, fishing holes and bird watching opportunities. The campground has bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, a playground and a dump station. There are cabins, tents and rv sites, some of which are handicapped accessible. Ithaca is also packed with wineries and the finger lakes. A great place to visit!

    Butternut Hill RV Campground

Choose Butternut Hill for special local events!

This is a small campground set up on the periphery of Butternut Hill farm which is located on the main Route 20 in Bouckville NY.  At the time I submitted my review, I was not able to make edits on the basic campground listing;   I am not sure why the Dyrt platform wouldnt let me update the important details, but you can get more info and make reservations on the campground webpage which is here:

    https://butternuthill.net/

The campground is in a convenient location in Bouckville,  a small upstate NY village with a concentration of numerous antique shops, which is a draw for collectors in the area. There is also a famous Inn and restaurant, the Landmark Inn, which anchors the town, adjacent to a trailhead for a hiking trail along the historic Chenango Canal, an offshoot of the Erie Canal.

The meadows and fields of Butternut Hill are the superb festival setting for several regional events, including several Antique shows, the Central New York Fiber Festival, a craft fair and a car show, events that are scheduled a few times a month throughout the summer.

The campground is adjacent to the festival fields, lining a forest edge with expansive views of the surrounding valley. During special events, vendors and exhibitors have a convenient and inexpensive place to stay that is not far from the exhibit tents and festival fields, but people attending the events can stay there too, or campsites may be reserved at other times through the summer, on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

Many of the sites are for RV's, which have electric and water hookups along with a picnic table and fire pit; rates fro these rang $40-50. There are also primitive tent sites which have a grassy tent area and fire pit but no picnic table and cost  $30 per night. There is a cozy log camper cabin available, at a very inexpensive price of $60 per night (bring your own linens). All camping spots are in close walking distance to the bath house, which has water, showers, and bathrooms. (Additional porta potties are set up during festival events.)

I was there during the Fiber Festival, and I was impressed at how well organized the programing was, and how clean everything was despite large attendance. In addition, it rained really hard one day of the event, and though the access roads got a little muddy, the campsites seem well drained and did not get muddy. The campsites all back to the woods on the west side, so this serves as a good windbreak too.

The campground office has some basic camping supplies available, but an advantage of being there during a festival event was a nice food tent and a variety of food trucks offering delicious fare!  If you were coming from a distance to attend one of the local special events, this is a good place to stay, though of course busy during the day. If you wanted to camp here at a non event time, you would find it to be a quiet pastoral location with access to some hiking and fishing spots in close proximity. For staying in the area, the camper cabin would be a great all-weather option if you can get it!

Guide to Chenango Forks

Chenango Valley State Park offers RV sites on gravel pads with both 30-amp and 50-amp electric service. The park sits at approximately 1,000 feet elevation in the glacially-formed Chenango River Valley. The surrounding hills and two kettle lakes create a natural basin where temperatures can drop significantly at night, even during summer months.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Anglers can fish for trout and bass at Chenango Valley State Park Campground. "There are miles of trails to hike and roads to bike. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards and the park is well maintained and monitored by park police, very safe," notes Courtney Z.

Water activities: Swimming and boating options abound during the summer season. "The beach area is well staffed and clean. Changing areas are available as well as a splash pad for the little kids," shares Fred C. about Chenango Valley State Park.

Wildlife viewing: Many campgrounds in the area support diverse wildlife observation. "I had my 5 year old grandson with me and he loved it... They have so many birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and insects that it was a veritable wonderland," reports Mary P.

Local exploration: The region offers attractions beyond camping. Near Soaring Eagle Campground, "Great river based location(Delaware River)... very rustic, sites are huge, plenty of room for 2+ family campers," states Hans M.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Campers frequently mention the generous site sizes at Pine Valley RV Park & Campground. "Lakeside sites are spacious and reasonably priced. The owners are always accessible," reports Mark L.

Clean facilities: Bathhouses and common areas receive positive comments. "The bathhouse was very clean, very rustic which i loved. The owners were super nice and accommodating," shares Kat V. about Aspen Family Campground.

Natural settings: Campers appreciate the natural environments at many parks. At Chenango County Cook Park, "This is a small county park and campground located east of Greene NY... For a solo camper who wants a bit of solitude, there is a better and super-nice option—the hike-in lean-to!" writes Janet R.

Recreational options: Multiple activities within campgrounds are valued. "This is by far one of the best family oriented campgrounds we've ever been in... So many things for kids to do. From boating, to giant swimming inflatables, putt putt even a giant slide," says Mommy D. about Pine Valley RV Park.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most RV parks near Chenango Forks operate from May through October, with limited winter options. Pine Crest Campground allows winter camping: "We camped in late November. A few campers. Quiet and we were able to camp on the river. Very nice owners and he brought us firewood," shares Scott I.

Site conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging terrain. "Beware, very tight sites among the pines & very sloped," warns Paully B. about Chenango County Cook Park.

Reservation needs: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially for holiday weekends. "I have been camping at Pine Valley for over 15 years... They have hayrides in the summer and swimming in the lake," notes Mark L.

Swimming restrictions: Not all parks with water features permit swimming. At Cook Park, "It has a small lake that is great for fishing and kayaks but swimming is not allowed," cautions Bob D.

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated children's areas: Family-friendly campgrounds often have specific amenities for kids. "The swimming is great and the entire swimming/boating area just underwent a major renovation. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards," mentions Courtney Z. about Chenango Valley State Park.

Consider seasonal activities: Some campgrounds offer special programming during peak seasons. "The pond is beautiful, it was quiet and just relaxing. The kids had a great time," shares Kat V. about Aspen Family Campground.

Choose campgrounds with varied recreation: Parks with multiple activity options keep children engaged. At Belden Hill Campgrounds, "Incredible views. Staff and residents so helpful and friendly. Clean bathrooms and laundry rooms... Fantastic animal preserve zoo nearby which is a must visit," notes Jennifer K.

Pack for weather changes: Valley locations can experience significant temperature swings. "Unfortunately we were there after a lot of rain from the hurricane, site was wet but useable, not their fault," mentions Tim W. about Belden Hill.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling considerations: Many RV parks in the region have uneven terrain. "Pull thru full hookup, level, spacious. Room for pop up canopy and games," reports Tim W. about Belden Hill Campgrounds.

Access road challenges: Some campgrounds have difficult entry roads. "Got in late, the new owners found a spot for me #81. Very nice couple, mostly older campers in year round RV's," shares John P. about Belden Hill.

Full hookup availability: Several RV parks near Chenango Forks offer complete services. "Very clean and right next to the river. Pool is nice. Everyone is super friendly, especially the owners who will not only help back you into your site but will also bring you wood to burn or level your camper if you need," states Kevin R. about Pine Crest Campground.

Wi-Fi connectivity: Internet service varies widely between campgrounds. At Soaring Eagle, Hans M. notes, "I know this controversial, but having Wi-Fi would be great esp when camping w/ kids."
