    Firelight Camps

    Such a unique Glamping experience!

Stayed 2 nights for my birthday and loved it. One of the first places to open after COVID shutdown. Normally they have a large gathering area for cooking, games and a bar tent. Even with the restrictions we had a great visit and felt safely distanced from other campers and staff. Great hiking trails because it is attached to Buttermilk Falls State Park. Also close to Cornell University which is a beautiful campus.

I loved sleeping in the huge canvas tent and listening to the rain safe and warm under many quilts. The breakfast baskets the made for us each day were so nice to wake up to. And the bar and fire pits were maintained for you by the staff -  such luxury. I loved it.

    Pinecreek Campground

Beautiful Park, beautiful area could be so much more with a little effort!

Pinecreek is a beautiful park in a great area 10 minutes from downtown Ithica New York and Lake Cayuga. The area has everything you could possibly want or need. Fabulous State Parks with spectacular waterfalls, a farmers market right on the lake front, Cornell University and so much more. That being said it may be the reason the campground doesn't offer any planned activities. They do have a swimming pool and what appears to be a large clubhouse/meeting area that is not or was not used while we were there, nor were any activities publicized. They do have a small arcade but it did not stay open past 8 pm and did not appear to be air-conditioned.

Our campsite was a full hookup with a large grassy area for setting up our outside chairs and picnic table. Although we enjoyed our stay we felt it was a bit overpriced for not having much to offer. They also have a very long list of rules & while they do allow pets there is a list of breed restrictions you need to be aware of before booking a reservation. They also charge for electricity on any stays one week or longer which we had not encountered previously at campgrounds where we have stayed.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but not sure we would stay again.

    Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground

RV/tent campground in a beautiful setting

This is a gated campground that we stayed at 6/30/19-7/04/19. We are NOT an RV. We own a Napier tent that hooks to our truck so that we can sleep up in the bed. However, due to it being a holiday week, the tent sites were completely booked and they only have 4(which also have water& electric). The tent sites are located in the back of the campground behind the sports field within the trees. I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to see them but they have them pictured on their website. They let us book an RV site and it was rough setting up on a gravel RV site but we understood that we were not within a normal tent element and placed an extra tarp under the tent. The campground is located at the top of some beautiful and scenic driving through farmland in Pennsylvania and you will be 30 minutes from anything like shopping or small town amenities(we drove to Walmart after setting up to get our perishables since we drive up from Virginia). Our site had water and electric, was a drive through spot for a typical RV with a section to the side of the drive through for the fire pit and picnic table. We were located right next to the shower/bathrooms/playground and had some tree coverage and shade. A lot of the RVs in the campground are permanent sites and our neighbors never showed so we had a quiet buffer but it was not a noisy campground. It appeared that they cleaned the bathrooms twice daily and we were impressed with the cleanliness of the bathroom/showers. There were 4 in the building so we never had to wait. The staff were friendly and helpful. They had a store right next to the pool area that offered common items and RV'er might need with a small grocery area as well which included bundles of wood($6 honor system after hours) and Ice($1.78 per bag). We were allowed to run an account which we paid at the end of our stay. Our campsite was required to be paid at check in. The campground is 18 acres with gravel roads, a sports field, fishing, horse shoes, bocce ball, multiple playgrounds, a rec center with some games, claw machines etc. a splash pad and salt water pool. You will be doing a lot of walking or bring your bicycles like we did. They offer scheduled activities for holidays etc and various weekend activities. You can rent non electric boats and they offer catch& release fishing without a PA license in the lake. My son caught 2 sunfish :) They have guidelines for visitors and quiet hours(my cousin came to visit us in the evenings as she lived close by). We enjoyed camping here even if we were on an RV site. We booked site 211 which had the little bit of tree coverage and was located right next to the showers/bathrooms/playground with a quick walk to the lake for fishing. Most of the other available sites in the road ahead of us had no tree coverage but closer to the lake had more trees and shade. OR, just get an actual tent site :) but they are all the way at the back of the campground, furthest from the lake so I actually preferred our site.

    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

    Beautiful waterfalls!

I absolutely love coming to Watkins Glen Campground, especially when I went to get away from the busy city. This park has gorgeous waterfalls, and great paths to walk and hike on. It's located in Upstate New York, so it's close enough to the city but you feel like you are far away from the city. The campsites are great, clean and well kept. This park does get pretty busy though, because it is open to campers and people who just want to visit for the day to walk the trails. I love that they have trails that lead very close to the waterfalls..lots of rim trails that literally overlook the waterfalls and gorges. In the campground they do offer a pool, which again, does get busy because it's open to everyone regardless if you are camping or not. There also is tours you can take in the summer that will take you along the waterfalls and gorge, they have a playground for kids and an area with picnic tables. I went mid July and it was extremely busy, not sure when a good time to go during the summer when it's not as busy. That was the only downside I would say, is how crowded it was. There is also Seneca Lake nearby that many people go to fish in, however I didn't go on this trip but plan to next time. There are restrooms on site, however I didn't think they were that clean. Toilet paper and seat covers were out in most stalls, so I would advise to bring your own when you go. There is also some gift shops and food stands set up...one food stand has some pretty good hot dogs! The hikes to the gorge and waterfalls is pretty well maintained, however there are quite a bit of stairs. There were some people with kids in strollers that had to turn around because the stairs made it difficult. Not handicap friendly. I would advise to wear a good pair of walking shoes, and not sandals because it is slippery in some spots and again, a lot of stairs! I would highly recommend coming here, even if you don't decide to stay the night!

    Tompkins

    Very Nice CG!

Just off US 15 at the New York border. All roads and parking pads are paved. The sites are closer together than most other COE parks where we’ve stayed. We stayed in the Bench Loop which is very busy since it is waterfront. Our first week, we were on site 54 (W/E 50A) and waterfront. Our second week, we stayed on site 44 (FHU 50A) right across from the seldom used playground. Quite wooded here but we managed to get satellite TV. No Verizon phone service and very slow internet with a booster. This area is pretty with rolling hills all around so we enjoyed a couple of scenic drives. About an hour away is the Pine Creek Rail Trail in the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

    Hills Creek State Park Campground

Well established and popular- perfect for groups

This is one of the main attractions for the area. Locals come here when the weather is nice.

We stayed in yurts, which are round tents ($38 per night). We had a cozy wooden deck and slept four people in two bunk beds. We also had a cooking stove, refrigerator, heat and electricity.

There is plenty of fishing and hiking to go around.

Really recommend this campsite if you have a little extra money to spend and are looking for a light getaway with friends.

If you're looking for a secluded place for yourself or with a loved one, I would look around the area for a less-popular campsite.

    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

    Watkins Glen State Park

Watkins Glen boasts one of New York’s most beautiful state parks! I last camped here in 2012 and absolutely loved hiking along the gorges. Also- the camping was next to perfect. Sites are decently sized and well secluded from one another.

in addition, the park is so well situated within the Finger Lakes and all the various wine trails! Made for a perfect girls weekend! Definitely recommend!

Guide to Big Flats

Watkins Glen and the surrounding Finger Lakes region offer a mix of seasonal glamping and traditional camping options from May to October. Temperatures range from lows near 45°F in spring to highs around 82°F in summer, with higher humidity levels in July and August. Most campgrounds in the area sit at elevations between 800-1,200 feet, with terrain characterized by rolling hills, hardwood forests, and access to numerous waterways.

What to do

Explore gorge trails: At Watkins Glen State Park Campground, visitors can experience the dramatic gorge directly from their campsite. "I stay here usually once or twice a year and spend my weekends hiking the various gorge trails nearby. Tent camping is nice here. The sites are good sized," notes Deb S. The park features 19 waterfalls along well-maintained stone pathways.

Visit the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania: Just an hour from Big Flats, this natural attraction provides a day trip option for campers. "PA Grand Canyon! Beautiful!!!! Go for the day and take hike! Plan on many steps though!!!" shares Amanda H. from Hills Creek State Park. The canyon offers both challenging and family-friendly trail options.

Swimming in natural settings: Robert H. Treman State Park Campground features a unique swimming area at the base of a waterfall. "You can swim in the waterfall area here. Need I say more? Actually, it can be VERY busy in the summer time in the swimming area, making it difficult to find your own 'space,'" advises Matt G. The park also offers a designated diving board into the swimming hole.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many glamping options near Big Flats provide separation between accommodations. "The sites are quite wooded with plenty of space in between," notes Laura L. about Watkins Glen. "The campsites are great and are all tree lined giving to a bit of privacy. As much as you get in campgrounds," adds Lindsay C.

Clean, modern facilities: Ferenbaugh Campground receives consistent praise for its maintenance. "Very clean campground. Bathrooms were clean. Had a pool and playground. Friendly staff," reports Sara H. For glampers seeking comfort, this provides essential amenities without sacrificing the outdoor experience.

Convenient location: Many campers appreciate how the area serves as a hub for regional exploration. "The park was clean and the staff was friendly. It was close to town, with a park and swimming beach across the street," shares Stacy E. about Clute Park. This makes glamping near Big Flats, New York practical for those wanting to combine outdoor stays with day trips.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most glamping accommodations close during winter months. "This campground keeps growing. I've camped here for 20+ years and they have always been great," notes Amy T. about Watkins Glen / Corning KOA, which operates from mid-April through late October, similar to most area glamping sites.

Varied site conditions: Sites range from open fields to wooded areas, impacting shade and privacy. "Site 54 at Robert H Treman is very large, flat, nonelectric and well shaded with areas of sun. A long walk to the restroom. The new loop is a large field--we got one of the few shady sites in the new loop," describes one camper.

Water quality varies: Some campgrounds have issues with water quality. "Make sure you use a water filter, there was a lot of sediment in the water when we were there," warns Michael H. about Ferenbaugh Campground, showing photos of a filter after just four days of use.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly attractions: Camp Bell Campground caters to families with various activities. "Nice place. Has plenty of close by attractions. Kids enjoyed the the big playground and mini arcade. Has a large pool for swimming and fun activities," notes Nick O. Many glamping sites also offer programming specifically for children.

Playgrounds and pools: Family-oriented amenities are common at campgrounds in the region. "There is a huge new playground for the kids and lots of area to walk around the loops if you don't want to hike the gorge trail," shares Lindsay C. about Watkins Glen State Park, making it suitable for families with varying activity levels.

Educational programs: Several parks offer learning opportunities for children. "The rangers offer educational programs that are free of charge!" mentions Amanda H. These programs typically focus on local wildlife, plant identification, and conservation practices, adding educational value to glamping trips.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger rigs: RV glamping requires attention to site specifications. "Watkins Glen was absolutely beautiful. The sites are quite wooded with plenty of space in between. We stayed in a 30 ft. motorhome, and the roads within the campground were kind of tight to get through with trees and curves," warns Laura L., suggesting careful navigation for larger vehicles.

Full hookup availability: Harpy Hollow and other glamping sites offer varying levels of amenities. "The hosts were lovely and very sweet, and created a wonderful place to stay off-grid," shares Lara Star M. For RVers requiring full hookups, it's essential to verify site specifications when booking glamping accommodations near Big Flats.

Levelness considerations: Some glamping sites present challenges for larger units. "Electric sites are not the best though. Rocky and unlevel. Not made for large campers," notes Victoria about Robert H. Treman State Park, highlighting the importance of researching site conditions before arrival.
