Best RV Parks & Resorts near Au Sable Forks, NY

Several RV parks surround Au Sable Forks, New York, offering varied options for motorhome travelers exploring the Adirondack region. Iroquois Campground & RV Park in Peru provides full hookups with 30/50 amp service on level sites from May 1 to October 1, accommodating big rigs with pull-through access. Plattsburgh RV Park, operating May 1 to October 15, features spacious sites with 50-amp electrical hookups designed for larger motorhomes. Nearby, Shady Oaks RV Park offers seasonal camping with 50-amp service and pet-friendly policies, though sites are primarily gravel with limited amenities. Iron City RV Park provides electric hookups, sewer connections, and water at each site, with sanitary dump facilities on premises. One RVer noted, "We had a full hookup, pull-through site surrounded by trees. There was some road noise during the day but it was nice and quiet at night."

Seasonal availability affects RV camping options throughout the region, with most parks closing by mid-October. Cell service varies significantly between locations, with stronger signals near Plattsburgh and spottier coverage in mountainous areas. Navigation to some RV parks requires careful planning, as narrow roads and tight turns can challenge larger rigs. Dump stations are available at most established RV parks, though not all offer on-site propane refills. Pet policies differ between facilities - Plattsburgh RV Park prohibits pets while Shady Oaks welcomes them. Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday, though slightly farther from Au Sable Forks, provides premium amenities including reliable Wi-Fi, which one visitor described as "excellent" compared to other parks in the area. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during summer and fall foliage seasons when RV sites throughout the region fill quickly.

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Amazing

This is a Class A 5⭐️KOA Campsite! We arrived late and Jox & his sweet wife helped us manuever our RV into our pull through site B05. We were super close to the office, store, snacks, laundry & activities. Our site was a “ dirt” site that had a picnic table and fire pit with full hook ups. This campsite has concierge service that will help you out with any of your wants/needs. Great site in nature’s finest.

    Shelburne Camping Area

    Very nice owners...lovely campground!

We have a “big rig” 40’ 5th wheel with 4 slide outs. Called them same day from Capital Region Welcome Ctr in NY, about 3 hrs away (below Albany). They had a full hook up, pull-thru corner space for us. Offered parking for our truck right across lane on separate site. Super nice owners! Went over COVID questions and after hour check-in instructions. We came in just after it got dark. Loved town of Shelburne. Awesome little shops and great, well stocked little local grocery store. Authentic Italian restaurant in grocery store parking lot...picked up delicious strombolis. Due to COVID, mostly call ahead/pick-up or drive thru for many things...incl. delicious coffee in town at Village Wine & Coffee and AWESOME cider donuts at Shelburne Orchards! Only a 20 min drive into downtown Burlington. Took narrated tour on Ethan Allen ferry on Lake Champlain. Shopped in artsy town. Extended our stay for TWO extra nights. Will def come back. Didn’t need to use, but noted that bathrooms were immaculately clean.

    Wilmington Notch Campground

In the heart of the High Peaks

Wilmington Notch Campground is owned and operated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. There are approximately 50 sites available, all on level campground and within access of Both bathrooms and shower facilities. Fire pits and picnic tables available. About a mile down the road from the high falls gorge tourist destination and a quarter mile from the base of whiteface lodge ski resort. There is an accessible trail from the back of the campground to an amazing waterfall on the west branch of the Ausable River and plenty of spots to trout fish/swim. A mile down the road is flume falls trails, which leads to a great swimming hole and various height choice cliff jumping. This is a very clean and quiet campground, one of the best in the high peaks region for primitive camping

    Moosalamoo Campground

    Hidden Gem

Tucked down a gravel road in the Green Mountain National Forest is this hidden treasure. Large sites, friendly campground host, the moosalamoo trailhead right next to campground. The trail connects to many others. You will pass several trailheads on your way up to the campground. Many of the sites are reservable, others are first come first serve. You will find a pay station as you enter the campsite. The camp host is at site 1. Surprisingly clean vault toilets. No showers. There are dumpsters on the way out for trash and recycling. I saw bear storage lockers but I did not use them as I had my bear keg with me. Behind the parking spur at the site there is gravel with picnic table and fire pit. Beyond that in the trees was a spot for the tent. I didn’t experience many bugs, no mosquitoes, what I saw the most of were caterpillars. But If you needed bug spray or forgot anything back in town a few miles Ripton grocery has you covered.

    AuSable Chasm Campground

    Closest campground to Ausable Chasm

We travel in a 17-foot camper van, but no one ever believes that we are no bigger than a standard cargo van and can easily fit in a regular size parking space. Upon arrival at Ausable Chasm, we were told we had to take a site with water and electric since we had a camper van. These sites were $13 more per night and we really did not need the hookups. We were finally able to convince the staff that we could take a standard tent site, which was more than big enough.

The road through the campground is dirt and rutted but the speed limit is 5 mph, so it wasn’t that bad, but it would be a mess if it was raining.

Bathrooms and shower rooms are individual rooms, but the doors are not labeled so it’s a game of “what’s behind door number 1?”  There was no light in the shower room that I looked at so a night shower would be out of the question. The bathrooms were clean and had soap, paper towels, a garbage receptacle, and a mirror in each.

Lots of ant hills throughout the campground so be cautious where you set up a tent. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Large and nice-looking playground, pool, volleyball net, disc golf and mountain biking/hiking trails. It also looked like there were cross country ski trails but not sure if the campground or cabins would be open in the winter.

Biggest advantage is that Ausable Chasm(a separate business) is directly across the street from the campground and it is very close to the ferry that will take you to Burlington, VT, our next destination.

    Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday

    Excellent Customer Service/Great Location/Loved It!

We just spent a full week at the North Pole Resorts the last week of May and through the Memorial Day Weekend. We are full-time travelers with a 40' Class A motorhome, flat tow a Jeep, have 2 kids (ages 8 & 13), and 2 English Bulldogs. We loved pulling in the week before the holiday weekend because there was hardly anyone else at the campground or in the area just yet. It does get packed over the holiday weekend, but was still very enjoyable and quiet at night. We were there right at the start of the season for them. ***Fair warning - Be sure to turn in by the North Pole Lodge Store and Mini Golf to register. We missed it and went past.*** We stayed in premium site 11 in the resort section and loved it. There was plenty of grassy room for the dogs to go out and we had a little cover over our picnic table. The kids enjoyed the arcade and playground being right there. We loved the store as it is one of the best we've seen yet & very well stocked. The location to area attractions was ideal as well. Lake Placid is maybe 20 minutes down the road and you can get groceries and have good restaurant choices too. Highly suggest the 45 minute drive to Ausable Chasm as well as the very short drive to the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. Another favorite activity was pulling off the road to explore the hiking & fishing. Quarry Pool Pond was our fave! Would absolutely be back!

    Fish Creek Pond Campground

    A little slice of heaven

I have stayed here many times over the years, usually for a 10-18 day stretch at a time. This is one of my favorite places. Most sites are right on the water. Square pond is a lovely little lake that connects to a larger lake (Upper Saranac I believe) by passing through a canal. This campground has great facilities. There are restrooms located convieniently throughout the park so you never have to walk more than a few sites no matter where you are. There are hot showers located at one end of the park and a dump station for RVs. The restrooms and showers are cleaned daily. There is a great little general store just outside the park that sells pretty much anything you could want. Sites are equipped with a table and fireplace (most have grates). There are vendors that drive through the park daily selling wood, ice cream (from an old fashioned wagon, get the moose tracks!), and ice. There is a boat supplier that travels the lake every morning and evening dropping off and picking up kayak and canoe rentals. If you love water front camping this is for you! The park is pet friendly but you need to show proof of vaccines. There are great things to do nearby like the Adirondack Museum, Lake Placid, and beautiful hiking spots. You can have power boats and jets skis on the lake as well as non motorized boats. Some of the best sunsets I have ever viewed happened right here. Quiet hours are taken very seriously and rangers walk the park at night warning rowdy fireside folks to quiet down. However, as dusk turns to night, you can always count on the chorus of yodels going back and forth across the lake. This is a wonderful spot! Check it out! You won’t be sorry! Oh, but sites go on sale nine months in advance through reserve America and the best spots wind up booked for the season pretty quickly.

Guide to Au Sable Forks

Camping opportunities extend beyond designated RV parks near Au Sable Forks, New York, with options ranging from full-service resorts to more basic facilities throughout the Adirondack and Champlain Valley regions. Located at approximately 550 feet elevation where the east and west branches of the Ausable River converge, the area features a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally from May through mid-October due to harsh winter conditions.

What to do

Golf on-site: Apple Island Resort features a 9-hole par-3 golf course with putting green for campers seeking recreational activities without leaving the campground. "We stayed there the last week of the season so things were very quiet. Study the sites carefully because our 'premium view site' looked into a boulder," notes one visitor who recommends carefully reviewing site options before booking.

Mine for gems: Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks offers gem mining activities popular with both adults and children. "The kids loved the gem mining and train rides!! We enjoyed the water view and the staff was so nice to us!" shares one camper. Another adds, "Being a fan of gems, I definitely bought an embarrassing amount of dirt for the gem mining(Got some good finds, so worth it!)"

Explore Fort Ticonderoga: Military history buffs can visit Fort Ticonderoga, located near Brookwood RV Resort. "Ft. Ticonderoga and Lake George are right around the corner," confirms a camper. Another notes the convenience: "Easy access to Fort Ticonderoga, restaurants in town and Lake George area."

What campers like

Private waterfall access: Davey Falls ADK offers secluded sites with natural water features not found at larger facilities. "Amazing secluded creekside spot. Private waterfall, hiking trails," reports one camper, adding it's the "Perfect location to explore eastern Adk."

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention cleanliness at Smugglers Notch RV Village, a newer establishment. "This is new campground opened this past season. This is our 3rd visit and it gets better each time... a beautiful well kept bath house and a small but well stocked store," notes a repeat visitor.

Peaceful environment: Quieter camping experiences attract visitors seeking respite from busier destinations. "Located far out in nature, the views are breathtaking. Owner was really nice and helpful," notes a visitor to Iron City RV Park. Another camper at Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks shared, "First time camping solo- great place! Felt safe and campground was quiet and clean."

What you should know

Wi-Fi reliability varies: Internet connectivity fluctuates significantly between rv parks in Au Sable Forks, New York and surrounding campgrounds. At Iroquois Campground & RV Park, a camper reported, "Wifi at campsite was inconsistent and unreliable. Had to work from rec center and pool which was ok but not what we were told." Conversely, Smugglers Notch RV Village receives praise for connectivity: "They also have great WIFI."

Seasonal operations: Most facilities close by mid-October, with the majority opening around May 1st. Brookwood RV Resort operates May 15-October 15, while Apple Island Resort runs May 1 to October 20, giving slightly more extended season options for late autumn campers.

Site selection matters: At Apple Island Resort, one camper advised, "The sites with the best views are the Platinum Plus which are also the most expensive. Some Platinum Plus sites are in the first row with unobstructed views; whereas, our site was three rows back. Not sure why they charge the same when our site was overlooking two rows of RVs."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Iroquois Campground & RV Park provides family-friendly recreational facilities. "They have a beautiful pond and its peaceful environment great for families and camp owners are helpful and polite," notes one family's first-time experience in their motorhome.

Water activities: Several campgrounds offer swimming options for children. At Brookwood RV Resort, facilities include a "Beautiful pool" according to visitor reviews. Apple Island Resort similarly features "a nice pool with plenty of chairs and umbrellas. The pool opens at 9am for adult lap swims for an hour."

Pet policies: Family camping often includes pets, and policies vary by location. Shady Oaks Camping Resort is noted as "pet friendly" in reviews, while Plattsburgh RV Park prohibits pets entirely. One visitor to Spacious Skies Adirondack Peaks mentioned, "Husband and I took a trip with all 3 pups and I couldn't even tell you who had more fun!! The doggos and husband absolutely loved being able to walk the beautiful trail."

Tips from RVers

Site layout considerations: At Apple Island Resort, RVers should note the unusual hookup configurations: "One thing is that their hook ups are on the passenger side. You have to pull straight in with the truck and camper. This is because a lot of class A prefer this way."

Big rig access: Many rv parks near Au Sable Forks accommodate larger motorhomes with proper planning. At Iroquois Campground & RV Park, one reviewer noted, "Sites somewhat small and tight but there are some larger sites." Meanwhile, Shady Oaks Camping Resort was described as a "Great Place for Big Rigs" with "Mostly Seasonal area with some overnight spots. No tents allowed. But pet friendly."

Hookup quality: Water pressure, electrical connections, and drainage capabilities vary significantly. At Apple Island Resort, one RVer observed, "The hook-ups at our site (11AD) were well-placed but the sewer pipe was high off the ground which did not let it drain even with a 'slinky.'"
