Dispersed primitive camping

Great camping spots about 1.5 mile hike in from Denning Trailhead. A lot of spots right by the river. Great spot to camp and then wake up to hike to tabletop/ peekamoose mountain. (near the top of tabletop there is also a lean-to for camping).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need tickets or permits to visit Peekamoose Blue Hole?

Yes, permits are required to visit Peekamoose Blue Hole during the peak season (typically May through September). The DEC requires visitors to obtain a free day-use permit in advance through their online reservation system. These permits help manage crowds and protect this popular natural area. The number of daily permits is limited, so it's recommended to secure yours well before your planned visit. During off-peak months, permits may not be required, but always check with the NY DEC for current regulations before your trip.

Where is parking available for Peekamoose Blue Hole and Sundown Wild Forest camping?

The primary parking area for accessing the Sundown Wild Forest and Peekamoose area is at the Denning Trailhead. This trailhead has a designated parking lot where hikers and campers can leave their vehicles before heading into the wilderness. From the Denning Trailhead, you'll need to hike approximately 1.5 miles to reach the primitive camping areas along the river. The trailhead serves as the main access point for both the Peekamoose Blue Hole and the backcountry camping sites within the Sundown Wild Forest.

What camping options are available near Peekamoose Blue Hole?

There are several primitive camping options near Peekamoose Blue Hole. About 1.5 miles from the Denning Trailhead, you'll find numerous backcountry camping spots along the river. These sites offer a true wilderness experience with no facilities. For those hiking further into the wilderness, there's a lean-to near the top of Table Top Mountain. All camping in this area must follow DEC backcountry camping regulations, including camping at designated sites and at least 150 feet from water, roads, and trails unless at a designated site. No reservations are needed for these primitive sites, but they are first-come, first-served.

Is there a trail map available for Peekamoose Blue Hole and surrounding areas?

Yes, trail maps for Peekamoose Blue Hole and the surrounding Sundown Wild Forest are available. You can obtain official maps from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) offices or through their website. Physical maps can often be found at visitor centers in the Catskills region. Additionally, the DEC provides downloadable PDF maps that can be accessed prior to your trip. Given the wilderness nature of the area and sometimes limited trail markings, having a reliable map is highly recommended for safely navigating the network of trails in the Peekamoose and Table Top Mountain areas.
