The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

Beautiful views and a relaxing environment.

The Last Resort is a lovely RV Park and campground on the Blanco River off Highway 84 between Chama, New Mexico and Pagosa Springs, Colorado. There are full RV hook ups in the loop and partial hook up by the river. The Bunk House is a small cabin with a queen bed and electricity. Many great tent camping sites. There is a nice Bathhouse with a full kitchen, bathrooms with showers and a coin operated washer/dryer. They are open year round, free wifi and pets welcome. There is a small store with ice, sodas, snacks, fishing tackle, RV supplies, and toiletries.

This is our 3rd summer at the Last Resort. It's a very laid back place with 2 playgrounds and plenty of activities for kids - horse shoes, volleyball, tether ball, etc. They have a nice 4th of July celebration, potluck dinners and camp fires. There are often horses (and a goat) on the property and plenty of space to take a nice walk. This year, we saw a lot of Canada geese and there are also chickens and ducks. We really love watching the many hummingbirds and hanging out by the river. Lots of campers like to fish or float down the river on inner tubes.

Well maintained, beautiful and friendly hosts make for a wonderful place to stay.

    Little Creel

    Larger RV Park

This is a larger RV Park. They provide full hookups, spaces for tent camping, and some small cottages. I have not used their restrooms, but the laundry is clean and reasonably priced. Many of the spaces are pretty close together, but we’ve had worse! They have nice picnic tables and fire pits. There is a creek that runs behind the park and the spaces along this creek cost more. We stayed in Space 20; which is supposed to have the creek behind it (so we paid more), but there’s a bunch of electrical boxes there so you can’t see it or access it and there’s also a huge manhole sticking up in our space! So don’t take Space 20 unless you are desperate! That is the reason for my 4 rating. The grass is sparse, but there are big grassy areas throughout the park. Some of the spaces have the shade of large trees. I would stay here again, but would avoid #20.

    Ponderosa Campground

    The River runs through it

The website listed for this campground is correct Ponderosa campground Antonito, CO.

    Phone 719.376.5857

This is a very relaxing place to stay and it seems like most of the people there have been there many times before. The drive in is easy on Route 17 and does not require a vehicle with high ground clearance. They do allow campfires, they have clean bathrooms and a shower house. I stayed in a backpacking tent after driving all day arriving on a Friday at about 4:00 PM. The campground is set-up for small campers and has some cabins for rent too. The bathrooms with showers are clean and comfortable. The sites have fire rings with grates and picnic tables. The owner manager is great, providing quality fishing advice, conversation and even a free cup of coffee in the morning. Hiking on the CDT is near the campground and fishing is right in the campground. The steam train is right up the pass and I happened to be there the night before opening day catching a photo when I drove over the pass to Chama New Mexico. The Cumbres and Toltec Train traveling between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. This is a very nice drive and Chama is a cool place to visit, it is a trail town on the CDT.

I will visit this campground again for sure.

    Riana - Abiquiu Lake

    Great views, great hosts

Camped 2 nights at site #38 on the Puerco Loop. Reserved thru rec.gov while at the site. Wonderful campground hosts. Site was not quite level for our campervan, but close enough. Good views of lake & surrounding area from site. Vault toilet & drinking water a short walk away. Juniper provided minimal privacy. Site has lantern poll, fire ring, trash can & table. No hookups at this site. $6/night with senior pass. Restroom/shower house within walking distance. Facilities & vault toilets were very clean. Hiking trail in campground. AT&T & T-Mobile service. Overall, quiet & peaceful stay.

    Ponderosa Campground

    Secluded Campsite.

This campsite is only accessible via boat. There are two fire pits. The land is flat compared to other sites at the Reservoir. Most of the ground is covered with sand. The mosquitoes were not too terrible even though we were right by the water. There are no bathroom facilities just nature. It is a nice quiet cove with amazing views. The stars and the moon light up the sky. I highly recommend staying there if you have boat access. It is secluded and private.

Twin Rivers RV Park & Campground

    Very accommodating

We had to have a couple tires replaced on our RV and not only were they able to fix us up with new tires at their Chevron Station, but she was able to find a space in their RV Park for a couple of nights. It wasn’t a great space, but it was fine. There are some nice large trees, grass in some areas, but not for our space. Although our fellow RVers weren’t real close, we were close to the shower facilities and there were lots of small campers using those giving us very little privacy. We are traveling with a very timid dog making it more difficult for us. We did not use the restrooms so I cannot comment on those. About every space has a picnic table but no fire pits. Somewhere in this distance there was a dog that barked almost continuously during the day, but I don’t think it was in the RV Park. Their prices are very reasonable and I would stay here again.

The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

    Excellent private campground for tenting

We enjoy tenting in relatively primitive national forests and usually avoid private campgrounds. But our friends recommended Last Resort on the River, and we were pleasantly surprised. The tent sites are separated from the RV sites in a forested area along the river. We shared a campsite on the river that had lots of trees and plenty of room for two tents and a canopy. Several other tent sites are carved out of the brush along the river. This makes a very nice setting with lots of privacy. The sound of the river is soothing and there was very little sound from the road.

It was a short walk to the amenities of the campground. There is a picnic shelter where we sat out a rainstorm, a very nice bathhouse for showering and washing dishes, as well as a comfortable indoor sitting area and another outdoor area with chairs and a fire pit. Ice and firewood are available at the office. Rich delivered them to our site. There are also some ice cream treats there and a few snacks. There is a fishing pond and a volleyball court. The rabbit hutch would have entertained the kids, if we had any with us.

There is no cell service, but the wifi was excellent and reached our campsite on the river. My wife was able to participate in a Zoom meeting from the picnic shelter where there was a convenient electrical outlet for her computer.

Rich is continually upgrading the property. He was very responsive and always willing to help. We highly recommend this campground.

The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

    Fantastic Getaway

Once again, the folks at Last Resort provided a great time. Stayed 2 nights, and were able to get us in earlier than the normal Check in time. Also, I have got to say their showers are so nice and powerful after having camped over 4 days in New Mexico and Colorado. Love the fact they have ice readily available when you need it. Definitely a must visit or stay along your travels.

Guide to Los Ojos

Cabins near Los Ojos, New Mexico offer convenient access to the region's outdoor recreation in the Chama Valley at approximately 7,500 feet elevation. The area experiences distinct seasonal changes with warm summer days in the 70s-80s°F and cool nights dropping into the 40s-50s°F. Many cabin accommodations remain open year-round, though winter access may require four-wheel drive vehicles during snowfall.

What to do

Fishing access: Several cabin locations provide direct river access for anglers. At Chama River RV Park & Cooper's El Vado Ranch, visitors note the exceptional fishing opportunities. "Always a family favorite. No phones (a short ten minute drive if you need it), just fishing and family fun. Large property, fun to walk, hike and the Chama river is beautiful with fishing on the property or a short walk to quality waters," reports Ian W.

Scenic train rides: The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operates from May through October with the station located minutes from Los Ojos cabin rentals. "We found this RV park in our travels from Cortez thru Pagosa Springs and would return when in this area. Especially near the Toltec train station," notes Norma G. from Twin Rivers RV Park & Campground.

Hiking opportunities: The surrounding mountains offer numerous trails within a 30-minute drive of Los Ojos. At Riana - Abiquiu Lake, located about 45 minutes south, "Sites are spacious, all with a view, and with options from horse camping to full hook up. While it's 'lakefront' getting down to the water is a 20 minute hike," explains Curtis B.

What campers like

River proximity: Many cabin locations near Los Ojos feature river access, a major draw for visitors. "The San Juan River and small lake are on property. We are in spot #40 a large pull through with electric and water only," explains Joseph W. at Pagosa Riverside Campground, located about 40 minutes north in Colorado.

Peaceful setting: The quiet atmosphere ranks high among cabin guests. At Elkhorn Lodge Chama, just a short drive from Los Ojos, Rose R. reported, "It's was a very pleasant experience staying here." Similarly, other cabin locations in the area emphasize their tranquil settings away from highway noise.

Natural scenery: The mountain views and riverside locations provide attractive settings for Los Ojos area cabins. "It is along the Chama River and some decent shade if your space is in the cottonwoods," mentions Mike H. about Little Creel, noting the riverside advantages despite other limitations.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Many cabin locations operate with reduced services during winter months. Curtis B. points out that at Ghost Ranch, "Georgia O'Keefe lived in the property for a while, so there's a lot of history about her, and there's a small dinosaur and anthropology museum on site." The ranch offers year-round accommodations but with varying amenities by season.

Pet policies: Most cabin rentals near Los Ojos allow pets, but specific rules and deposits vary. "We are traveling with a very timid dog making it more difficult for us," notes Melody M. about her stay at Twin Rivers, highlighting the importance of checking pet policies when booking.

Grocery options: Limited food shopping exists in Los Ojos itself, with larger stores requiring a drive to Chama. "Not much in town to do but there is the Cumbres & Toltec train to ride. Lots of hunting and fishing in the area," explains Thomas S., pointing out the rural nature of the area.

Tips for camping with families

Onsite activities: Some cabin locations offer family-friendly amenities beyond basic accommodations. "Great views of the lake in which you can swim (and boat). Not a lot of shade, unless you snuggle in with a Piñon tree, but we spend our days on the lake or hiking Ghost Ranch, which is a few minutes away," shares Warren K. about recreation options near Abiquiu Lake.

Weather preparation: Summer afternoon thunderstorms occur regularly in July and August. Andy O. advises, "Pack rain gear if you're camping in July/Aug because the monsoon flows up with some pretty good t-storms," based on his Little Creel experience.

Space considerations: Cabin sizes vary significantly across properties. "Started our excursion stopping in here on a whim and it quickly became a favorite spot for us! The staff is fabulous and so is the camping! Great access to the river, hot showers (FREE), restroom next to the shop," reports Paisley W. about facilities that complement cabin stays.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Electric service ranges from basic to full hookups at cabin locations. "Full hookups 50/30amp. No wifi but very good Verizon and AT&T service," notes Thomas S. about Twin Rivers, information relevant to cabin guests who might need connectivity.

Spacing between units: Site layouts differ between properties. "Many of the spaces are pretty close together, but we've had worse! They have nice picnic tables and fire pits," Melody M. observes about Little Creel, highlighting the typical space limitations at some locations.

On-site amenities: Check what each property offers beyond basic cabin facilities. "Very accommodating... There are some nice large trees, grass in some areas, but not for our space. Although our fellow RVers weren't real close, we were close to the shower facilities," mentions Melody M. about Twin Rivers, noting the variable placement of amenities.
