What to do
Lake activities: 17-acre lake at Turkey Swamp Park offers fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and seasonal boat rentals during summer months. "Turkey Swamp is a great spot, a lot of different things to do. Fishing, Tent Camp, Van Camping, Open Field, BBQ, Kayaking, Canoeing. The list goes on. I've been here a few times, every time I'm here I barely touch my phone," shares Tylen L. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Winter recreation: Seasonal ice skating available for cabin guests staying during colder months. "We go every year. It has everything the outdoorsman could ask for. Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," notes Patrick M.
Mountain biking: Trails of varying difficulty levels throughout the region with some of the best options at Allaire State Park. "Great canp ground and State Park. Very clean with professional staff. Lots to do in the area! Mountain Biking from easy, paved trails to several miles of single track with everything in between," explains Beau B. about Allaire State Park.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Wooded sites with privacy at several parks within 30 miles of Rumson. "Sites are in the woods and widely spaced apart to give you privacy and the feeling of being out in the Forrest. There are tent and RV sites and you are allowed to have a tent on the site with an RV at no extra charge," recommends Katheryn N. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Nature immersion: Pine Barrens ecosystem offers unique flora and fauna for nature enthusiasts. "You can't hear any cars or any other noise from civilization at all. It's at least 10 miles away from anything more than a single house in the woods. 5 miles away from the main road. It just makes for better camping," explains Benjamin K. about Brendan Byrne State Forest.
Seasonal activities: Halloween weekends feature special programming at many parks. "We went to Timberland Lake last fall. It happened to be the Halloween weekend which was full of excellent activities from pumpkin painting to piñatas and tricker treating. Lake was beautiful," reports Ann Marie M.
What you should know
Tick prevention: Insect repellent essential from spring through fall in all wooded cabin areas. "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," warns Laura Y.
Site conditions: Sandy soil prevalent at many parks, especially at Pine Cone Resort and Butterfly Camping Resort. "Cons: Sand sites, Overpriced, Tight site & hard to get in/out for big rigs," notes Beth R. about Adventure Bound Camping.
Bathroom facilities: Variable quality depending on location and season. "Ticks were very active on this visit be sure to remember your bug spray and tuck your pants in your socks! Overall a great time," advises Megan S.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple play areas at several parks with cabins. "There are playgrounds and picnic areas as well. This is a lovely campground," notes Katheryn N.
Child-friendly activities: Scheduled events throughout summer and fall weekends. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite! The campground was super clean too. It was perfect!" shares Jaewook P. about Butterfly Camping Resort.
Family cabin selection: Consider proximity to bathrooms when booking with small children. "Our site was nice but far from the activities and to get there you must go around the lake using the same road the cars and golf carts are using. Wish it was a little safer as I have small children," shares Ann Marie M.
Tips from RVers
Hookup limitations: Electrical capacity varies between parks and may be limited at state park cabins. "Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site," describes Lee D.
Water connections: Bring extension hoses as some sites have distant water hookups. "Nice, remote, private. Some sites unlevel. Bring a LONG water hose. Nice lake. Showers and washers and dryers," advises Shawn about Turkey Swamp Park.
Weather considerations: Sand sites can be problematic during rainy periods. "As soon as you turn off the main road to the park, all roads are dirt, which was a bit surprising. They were well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy," explains Lee D.
