Best Cabin Camping near Aberdeen, NJ

Turkey Swamp Park provides furnished cabins within its wooded county park setting approximately 20 miles from Aberdeen. The three rental cabins feature electric hookups, heating systems, and basic furnishings including beds and tables. Specific cabin amenities include picnic tables outside each unit, fire rings for cooking, and access to the park's central bathhouse facilities with showers and toilets. "The cabins are a great option for those wanting to experience camping without the hassle of setting up a tent," according to feedback on The Dyrt. Pine Cone Resort in Freehold also offers cabin accommodations with electrical service and more developed amenities.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Most cabins require advance reservations, particularly during the April through November peak season when Turkey Swamp Park operates. While pets are allowed at most campgrounds in the area, policies regarding pets in cabins specifically may differ from general campground rules. Allaire State Park cabins, currently closed for renovations, previously offered year-round accommodation options. A visitor noted, "The cabins provide a perfect family campground experience with wooded sites and clean facilities."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary widely between properties, with some cabins offering only basic cooking arrangements while others provide more complete setups. Turkey Swamp cabins include outdoor fire rings with cooking racks for meal preparation. Several campgrounds, including Pine Cone Resort, maintain on-site markets for basic provisions. Firewood is available for purchase at the park office for cooking and evening campfires. Monmouth County's location provides relatively easy access to groceries and supplies in nearby Freehold Township or Howell.

    Turkey Swamp Park

Nicely wooded park with many activity options

General: Smallish (64-site) county park campground. There are also three cabins. As soon as you turn off the main road to the park, all roads are dirt, which was a bit surprising. They were well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy. The campground is in five loops with the bathhouse located in the D Loop.

Site Quality: Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site. As mentioned, all roads and camper pads are dirt. There are some ADA sites but the only thing distinguishing them from others is their proximity to the bathroom.

Bath/Shower House: Very clean. Soap and paper towels are provided. The only thing missing were hooks or shelves for toiletries but there was a large bench that could be used. Since it is located in the D Loop it would have been helpful to have pathways leading from the other loops. Did not use the shower so cannot comment.

Activities/Amenities: There is a lake with a boat dock and a small boardwalk. Kayaking/Canoeing, fishing, and swimming. In the summer, canoe, kayak, paddle boats, and row boats are available for rental. Several short (longest one is 2.5 miles) hiking trails that are fairly well-marked but can be a bit confusing at times. Some sections of the trails were muddy due to swamps and bogs but passable. There is also a fitness trail. There is an archery range and a council ring (campfire). There is a dump station and laundry facility with brand-new washers and dryers (however, you need to pay using an app on your phone). The office is open until 9 pm and sells ice, firewood, and bait. There are age-appropriate playgrounds both in the campground and by the office.

There are not a lot of camping opportunities in NJ, and this was a nice one. The campground was only about 20% occupied when we were there at the end of April, so our stay was a quiet one.

    Tohickon Valley County Park

    One stop shop for adventure!

This place is amazing! everything you could want, from tent and RV camping to cabin rentals. They also have a pool and playground. some of my favorite parts of this park are a good 100’ rack wall perfect for climbing, great fishing, trails for miles that even connects to the AT, and when scheduled they open the dam up stream for som world class whitewater rafting.

As for some things that aren’t listed. this is no alcohol permitted in the park due to it being a state park, however that all depends on how open you are about it and the Park rangers. Cell phone service is limited last time I was up there in 2012 only people with Verizon Wireless had any reception. Also there is no WiFi. No hookups or camp store.

    Tohickon Valley County Park

    Great stop for a Bikepacker

No electrical and no pets allowed in camp sites. But plenty of trees and huge fire rings in each spot. An RV would have a tough time but for car camping it’s great. The Delaware Canal is nearby with the tow path for biking. That makes this a nice Bikepacking stop.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    My favorite!

We stayed in New Jersey for our 5th campground on the East Coast: Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold. This is a County park.

     Near some Revolutionary War battlefields.

I really liked this park! They have 2283 acres. A 17 acre lake. Some hiking trails & a nice campground! The sites are all pullthrough. There's lots of vegetation for "privacy". We had a site on the perimeter, which are forest views. Only problem is none of the roads are paved. All are packed sand. We could tell it rained recently because of the muddy tracks. Fortunately it didn't rain while we were there!

Shower/bathrooms are clean, but dated. They're checked regularly. The bath house is for the entire campground. 3 out of the 4 women's were working. There's a shared dressing area.

There's a laundry that doesn't take quarters. EPay.

There's a nice playground in the campground.

They have 3 cabins for rent, with forest views.

The lake has fishing & boat rentals. No gas motors. There's no swimming at the lake. Cell service was fair.. No WiFi.

    They have an archery range.

This was my favorite campground on our trip! I really enjoyed camping here! There's a rustic retro quality to the place. I adored the campsites & I didn't see any really bad ones.

    Spruce Run Recreation Area

    Great Weekend Getaway Shelter/Cabin

We stayed in the "Shelter" which was a nice little cabin with a wood stove, table w/benches and two bunkbeds (one of which was nestled behind a partition). There was a front porch w/awning, fire ring and picnic table.

Plenty of wood deadfall for the campfire to be found just behind the shelter. There are also lovely mature birch trees flanking the entrance road, stop there to grab the fallen branches for kindling. (Birch has natural flammable properties and will even burn when wet).

The bathrooms had a shower and outdoor dishwashing sink. They were clean and stocked with soap/toilet paper, but bring a towel to dry your hands if you don't want to use the air-dryer.

The grounds were well kept and the park rangers were non-intrusive and friendly. The campground area we were in was open and at night you could see right into our little cabin. Bring a sheet to hang over the windows.

There were some bugs in the wood stove that startled us the first night, they were also on the window and between the window and the screen. Looking them up online they appeared to be stinkbugs, but didn't smell, thankfully. Citronella essential oil on the window and a nice fire took care of them the first night...for the most part. They didn't bite or go after our food, they just fly a bit loudly and crash into the window, an unusual sound. A few spiders around, but that can be expected when you camp. No mosquitos, no ticks. As for the ticks, there were lots of deer around but we kept our ankles covered and avoided the higher grass in the morning when the dew was still making everything wet.

The boat rental was closed for the season. We went to Di Mola's Pizzeria and Restaurant the second night and the food was excellent - it was not crowded for sit down but tons of traffic for people coming in to pick up orders.

We went to the nearby Ken Lockwood Gorge after we checked out Sunday morning, this was beautiful. The road into the park had a lot of potholes, but we did ok with our "vintage" toyota camry. Where the road access ends are two small parking areas. Plenty of people were fly fishing or walking their dogs. The road continues to travel on foot along the river.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Beautiful well equipped campground

Used this very clean county park numerous times. Pull through sites are well spaced and private and each has permanent trash and recycling bins with bag provided, water, AC power, table and a post for a lantern. There's a pond for kayaking, playground and archery range. Bathrooms are dated looking but very clean.

Guide to Aberdeen

Turkey Swamp Park offers cabin camping near Aberdeen, New Jersey, approximately 20 miles away in a wooded Monmouth County setting. The sites feature dirt roads throughout the park with pull-through driveways in loops B through E. Cabins are available from April 1 through November 15, when the campground operates for the season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Turkey Swamp Park has a lake with fishing access directly from some campsites. A visitor noted, "There is a lake with a boat dock and a small boardwalk. Kayaking/Canoeing, fishing, and swimming. In the summer, canoe, kayak, paddle boats, and row boats are available for rental" (Lee D.).

Archery options: Turkey Swamp Park provides an archery range for visitors looking for target practice. According to one camper, "Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels" (Patrick M.).

Winter activities: While most cabins close for winter, some parks offer winter recreation. "Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," recommends a regular visitor (Patrick M.).

Trails for hiking: Several short trails ranging from easy walks to longer hikes surround the cabin areas. One reviewer described, "Several short (longest one is 2.5 miles) hiking trails that are fairly well-marked but can be a bit confusing at times. Some sections of the trails were muddy due to swamps and bogs but passable" (Lee D.).

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Butterfly Camping Resort offers cabins with natural buffers between camping areas. A camper shared, "The sites are cozy and each lined with natural shrubbery and in some cases fencing. they're well maintained and raked between campers" (Tina D.).

Digital disconnection: The rustic cabin settings encourage unplugging from technology. As one visitor to Turkey Swamp mentioned, "Every time I'm here I barely touch my phone" (Tylen L.).

Bathroom facilities: Most cabin camping areas provide access to centralized bathroom facilities. A reviewer at Butterfly Camping Resort noted, "Some of the cleanest bath houses I've seen at a campground. Soap and paper towels are provided" (Tina D.).

Wildlife awareness: Natural settings mean wildlife encounters are common. At Turkey Swamp, one camper warned, "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2" (Laura Y.).

What you should know

Cabin types vary: Allaire State Park cabins are rustic. "Cabins are no frills yet very nice no electricity they are equipi with 4 bunks a LG picnic table and a wood stove for heat. Also a nice porch fire ring and a charcoal grill," explains one visitor (Erik M.).

Seasonal availability: Most cabin facilities have limited operating seasons. At Turkey Swamp, a camper observed, "The campground was only about 20% occupied when we were there at the end of April, so our stay was a quiet one" (Lee D.).

Road conditions: During wet periods, access can be challenging. A Turkey Swamp visitor mentioned, "As soon as you turn off the main road to the park, all roads are dirt, which was a bit surprising. They were well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy" (Lee D.).

Bathroom limitations: Cabin campers should check bathroom proximity. At Turkey Swamp, "The bathhouse is located in the D Loop" and "it would have been helpful to have pathways leading from the other loops" according to one reviewer (Lee D.).

Tips for camping with families

Age-appropriate playgrounds: Timberland Lake Campground offers play areas for different age groups. "Playground, basket ball, beautiful pool and for an extra fee beach access. Now for the down side: it appears that the office and camp store (which offers a lot) has overgrown the facilities," notes one visitor (Jim C.).

Bug preparation: Bring appropriate insect repellent for cabin stays. One family at Turkey Swamp had a positive experience: "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite!" (Jaewook P.).

Activity planning: Many cabin campgrounds offer scheduled weekend activities. A visitor to Timberland Lake noted, "We went to timberland lake last fall. It happened to be the Halloween weekend which was full of excellent activities from pumpkin painting to piñatas and tricker treating" (Ann Marie M.).

Distance to attractions: Indian Rock RV Resort provides convenient cabin access to regional attractions. "We stayed two nights at this park because we wanted to spend a day at Six flags. We would camp here again to go to six flags because it was easy to drive back a few minutes after a long day at the park," shared one family (Valen K.).

Tips for RVers

Electrical capacity: Pine Cone Resort cabins have varying electrical capabilities. Some visitors note limitations: "We are wintering here and it seems to be a great place so far. Most of the neighbors that have been here years are friendly as well as the staff that I have met so far" (Preston G.).

Site surface considerations: Campground surfaces vary widely between locations. One visitor to Timberland Lake noted, "My biggest issue is the sand for all pull-throughs. They do offer full hookups that include cable if you have the outdoor wire" (Robyn W.).

Utility access: When booking cabin accommodations with RV access, check utility placement. "The site was level and meticulously maintained, as were the dirt roads. The atmosphere was tranquil and relaxing," reported a visitor to Adventure Bound Camping (Howard P.).

Water hookup requirements: Some sites require extra equipment. A camper at Timberland Lake advised, "Bring a LONG water hose" when visiting with an RV setup (Shawn).
