Las Vegas Bay Campground — Lake Mead National Recreation Area

In the desert, but feels cozy somehow

We landed in Vegas and headed straight out of the city to this campground.  I booked it online, not ever having seen it in person, but I'd stay again in an instant.

We had site 23 - very shaded and "green" - site 24 (not ours) was very open to the desert.

There is a no generator section meant for tents, but we didn't stay there as it seemed fully booked so I picked an RV/tent site at the far end.  And it was lovely.  The site was in the middle of a turn around, so we were in the "donut center" so to speak and it was quiet, shaded and beautiful.  Lot of palms and oleander that gave a lot of privacy. A short walk to the bathroom (hundred yards maybe?) but they were clean and the toilets were the flush kind, not pit kind. Drinking water was available too. There were fire pits at each site and a picnic table. Our site - and I assume most - were dirt/sand mix that made for easy tent set up.  But don't count on getting your stakes into the ground. There were a lot of small rocks around the site - obviously used by many campers to "stake out" the tent with.  We did so as well.

The campground as a whole was a short drive off the main road, but very easy to get to.

    Absolutely I'd stay here again.

    Wonderful!

Free dump station and potable water. Dispersed spaces asphalt pads, concrete picnic tables, fire rings and gorgeous views. What more can we ask? It’s quiet except for the birds. Quail are everywhere. Close to the water and it’s peacefully quiet.

Las Vegas Bay Campground — Lake Mead National Recreation Area

    The best so far!

This is by far the best national Park campground we have stayed at. They have planted lots of trees in the campground for shade in the middle of the desert. So from the highway you come in at, it looks like a little oasis in the middle of the desert. We arrived on Wednesday and had about 3/4 of the campground to choose from. There were fire rings, picnic tables, and a trash dumpster, plus clean restrooms. There is a dump station and also fresh water to fill your freshwater tank. No hook ups, so bring everything you need. Highly recommended!

    Thousand Trails Las Vegas

    Good park for the city.

This is a Thousand Trails RV Resort located in the city of Las Vegas. The park is large and the sites are pretty tight. It does fit large rigs, but your neighbors are close, and it is FHU. There are a lot of full-timers at this park. The RV resort is decently maintained and has multiple laundry facilities and restrooms. There is a large heated pool and a nice deck area for relaxing. They have large, fenced dog run that could be cleaner. There is also an office and community room where there is live music and other entertainment during the week. This park does have tiny houses for rent and they are well kept. It is in a decent location, close to shopping and casinos. Downtown Las Vegas is just a couple miles away and a quick drive. The resort is located on busy roads which can be noisy at times. There is a ranger station at the entrance and security. The park had some issues with electricity being rewired and they were currently down 86 spots, but we were told they would be fixed soon. Overall, a nice park and a good stay close to everything.

    Thousand Trails Las Vegas

    Typical thousand trails

This RV park is a typical thousand trails park. Kind of dumpy, super tight spots, not well maintained, and not in the best area. The spots are packed in tight with very little room to park your vehicle. Our spot was next to a fire hydrant so we had a little extra room to park our truck but we were 1 of 2. The spots are gravel and ours was very hard to get level in even with auto level.. we had SO many leveling blocks under the back. No bench, no fire pit, nothing extra. There was trash at our site, which seemed pretty standard. We barely had cell service the whole time (T-Mobile) and there is no free WiFi, it’s extra. We also had to pay extra for a 50 amp site (which was necessary to run our AC because it was so hot). The pool was very small, not heated, deteriorating, but clean at least. There are 3 laundry facilities and only 4 working washers and 4 working dryers in the whole 200+ spot campground spread out over 3 different buildings. This made for long waits to do any laundry. There is no change machine on site and they offer the wash connect app, but the app can’t find 6/8 machines which is a problem. Lots of trailer park looking trailers with junk, trash, and permanent structures built on. The campground is gated which is nice because it’s not in the best area and they have barbed wire around the whole thing.

Overall, we would stay here again if we had to, because it was free but it is definitely a pretty dumpy campground.

Las Vegas Bay Campground — Lake Mead National Recreation Area

    Beautiful views, clean

The sites are a first come first served basis. There are paved parking pads, concrete table, bbq grill, and fire rings at each site. View of a canyon stream, some coyotes heard at night. There is a restroom with flushable toilets that are clean. There is a free dump station. Rates are $20 per night, $10 for senior or access pass holders.

    Thousand Trails Las Vegas

Very Close to Your Neighbors & Noisy

We stayed at this park twice while passing North and South of Las Vegas.  It's a no frills Thousand Trails park that could use some updating.  The spaces are very tight together partially because the occupants don't follow the site lines on the ground.  We saw several that parked on the line and extended their slide outs into the area of the next RV'er, therefore, they were unable to extend their awning.  Car parking is chaos, again because no one seems to stay within the space lines painted on the ground. We had difficulty even backing into our site because of the way the next door neighbor parked his rig and vehicle.  They finally saw us struggling and came out to move their car.  There is noise from a busy road behind the park and it's in the path of the airport.  Between the noise and the close quarters, we were ready to move on after a week.  The laundry rooms were decent but twice we found washers to be out of order.  Showers are OK.  Dog park is half grass and half dirt.  Pool was closed when we arrived but looks nice.  Some annual or seasonal sites could use some clean up.  Looked like they were storing everything they owned outside.

Las Vegas Bay Campground — Lake Mead National Recreation Area

    Relaxing Space

Of the campgrounds I checked out in this area I found this one to be one of the nicer ones. Unlike some which had a lot of random garbage this one was well maintained and looked like those who stayed respected the area more.

Sites here were smaller than most but since I stay in a tent of course I had plenty space for my car and tent alike without struggle. I do not see this working well for longer rigs though that need a pull through that is much longer.

I had plenty of space between me and my neighbor and with some low level brush it stopped any of the brash winds from effecting me at night. I had a picnic table and fire ring, standard to most camping sites and that made for a perfect set up for me as I don't really need all that extra most of the time.

The weather was nice other than the wind when I was there so I didn't have any reason to need to plug anything in to keep cool but I do know I wouldn't even attempt to stay here after late May it just gets way to hot. Not to mention they do have a lot of snakes in this area when the heat gets to that point, so no thanks!

The night was quiet, I had read that there were a lot of coyotes but I heard none in the area instead only the sounds of someones RV making a humming noise a few sites over.

The bathrooms were well kept and there was water scattered throughout the campground which made it easy to access. My only complaint in regard to either of these was that the bathrooms did maybe need a bit of restock, but since I am always prepared that wasn't an issue. I would suggest also always being prepared!

    TIPS:

    • Don't leave trash at your site or food outside of your vehicle if you are in a tent. While I did not hear coyotes others have reported that not to be the case. Many times these animals are out because they smell food and are wanting to look for it.
    • Take advantage of lake views for great sunset pictures. I was so upset by the time I got to my campsite I had used all my battery and missed some of the best views of the day.
    • Check out hiking in this area. One of the best trails nearby is just a couple miles up at White Owl Canyon. It is marked on this map, however if you go and get a map from rangers you will not find the trail, this is because it is a wash area and is closed from time to time. Simply ask for directions to the trailhead when passing though the rangers station.

    Thousand Trails Las Vegas

Nothing Special but proximity to the Strip.

This park does not really deserve the word "Resort" as a title. Many of the spaces are so cramped you can't even put an awning or a chair out unless it is in front of your rig. The sites are so tight that some only have an inch or two of separation between neighbors. The staff actually asks the width of your rig at check in and even assists some people backing into the tiny spaces.

The restrooms and laundry room were dark and cramped. I can get that experience in my own RV. The park overall looked dirty and drab. The pool area was really nice and well maintained with a heated pool and simple lounge area. It was nice to be able to relax for a moment and melt into the warm sunny days until a shadow of a plane and the heavy rumble of its engines wakes you from your day dream. Chase that startled moment with the sounds of first responder sirens constantly blaring to save another person from getting swallowed up in Las Vegas statistics.

The WiFi in the lodge was pretty good, as far as RV parks go. That is, if you can get past the funky smell that greets your nose in the lodge. Sort of like old reheated picante beef Cup of Noodles freshly pulled from the microwave. The polite staff as we entered and left the park were always a joy to catch up with as we snapped incredible pictures of fiery sunsets behind the leafy branches of swaying palm trees.

The redeeming quality of this park is its location to The Strip, only ten minutes east and a few minutes more to Fremont. With a little over an hour's drive north you can visit Valley of Fire State Park for an amazing day of hiking and exploring. You can even catch a glimpse of petroglyphs scribbled on the vibrant red faces of massive boulders and cliffs.

Like I said, there is some good and some bad to rightfully earn that balanced 3 stars. @RoarksVentures stayed here in March, 2018. We were grateful to experience the place, both its pros and cons, while traveling through Nevada.

Guide to North Las Vegas

Cabin options near North Las Vegas, Nevada range from rustic to modern accommodations within a 45-minute radius. Located in the Mojave Desert at elevations between 2,000-3,000 feet, the region experiences summer temperatures frequently exceeding 100°F and winter nights that can drop below freezing. Most cabin sites near North Las Vegas require reservations well in advance, particularly during spring and fall seasons when weather conditions are most favorable.

What to do

Explore nearby natural areas: Las Vegas Bay Campground at Lake Mead National Recreation Area serves as a convenient base for nature exploration. "Easy access from Las Vegas, but feels a world away. Lots of big trees and bushes make the campground feel like an oasis. At night I've always heard coyotes and owls. Access to Lake Mead is a 15 minute drive away," notes camper Lance E.

Visit historic sites: The Retro Camper with Desert Mountain View offers proximity to local history. "The Pioneer Saloon just a 5 minute walk down the hill. Live music Friday-Sunday. Everyone is friendly," shares Lynda M., highlighting accessible entertainment near this single-cabin accommodation.

Photography opportunities: Desert landscapes provide striking backdrops for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset. The terrain surrounding cabin sites features dramatic rock formations, desert vegetation, and mountain silhouettes against the sky.

What campers like

Convenience to Las Vegas: Thousand Trails Las Vegas RV Resort receives praise for its proximity to attractions. "This park has great proximity to Vegas action and is centrally located for day trips around the area. Staff and security are excellent," writes OurEpicFieldTrip, though noting the tight spaces.

Desert night experiences: Cabins offer shelter while allowing guests to experience desert nights. Temperatures can drop 30+ degrees from daytime highs, creating comfortable evening conditions even during summer months.

Wildlife viewing: The natural setting provides opportunities to observe desert wildlife. One camper at Las Vegas Bay Campground reports, "Quail are everywhere. Close to the water and it's peacefully quiet," highlighting the birdwatching opportunities in the area.

What you should know

Security considerations: Some cabin locations maintain security measures given their proximity to urban areas. At Thousand Trails Las Vegas RV Resort, "Security is present with 24/7 gate monitoring, but enforcement felt lax when an unknown vehicle parked in front of our RV on Halloween night. Though the intruder eventually moved, it was unsettling that security didn't intervene," reports Paulina B.

Weather preparations: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F between June and September. Cabins with air conditioning become essential during these months.

Noise factors: Aircraft noise affects some cabin locations. As Joshua R. notes, "It was nice to be able to relax for a moment and melt into the warm sunny days until a shadow of a plane and the heavy rumble of its engines wakes you from your day dream."

Tips for camping with families

Best seasons for children: Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) offer milder temperatures more suitable for family activities. A camper at Las Vegas Bay notes, "We stayed in late March which was a great time to stay. Low 70s during the day and maybe 59 at the coldest part of the night."

Pack extra water: The desert environment demands additional hydration. Each person should plan for at least 1 gallon of water daily for drinking and basic needs when staying in cabins with limited facilities.

Look for shaded sites: When booking cabin accommodations, prioritize locations with natural shade. "We had site 23 - very shaded and 'green' - site 24 (not ours) was very open to the desert," shares Amy G. about her experience at Las Vegas Bay Campground.

Tips from RVers

Bathroom facilities vary: Facilities range from basic to well-maintained across different cabin locations. "The bathrooms are clean, but good luck getting paper towels," notes Schylar M. about Thousand Trails facilities.

Check site dimensions carefully: Many cabin and RV sites in the area have size limitations. One camper observes, "Sites are small. RVs larger than 31 ft will have a hard time fitting," regarding Las Vegas Bay Campground.

Supplies and provisions: Most cabin guests should plan to bring essential supplies. Proximity to urban areas means grocery stores are accessible, but on-site purchasing options remain limited at most destinations.
