Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Shubert, NE

Park has easy access from Highway. Nice mix pull-through and back-in sites. Pet friendly with large dog park and plenty of green space with mature trees.

Coming from MO, Nebraska is usually just a one night stop for us (as we head onto bigger and cooler states). We were happy to find this clean RV park near Nebraska City. Big, but quiet. Friendly staff. Homey. Green space. Great dog park.

We only stayed here one night but would have gladly stayed longer. We didn't use everything but it seems to have all the amenities you might need - full hookups, propane, showers, laundry, dog park, play space for kids.

We were pretty close to our neighbors but not so close that it felt uncomfortable. Staff accommodated our need for a late check-in and even called to make sure we knew how to get to our site.

Really beautiful surrounding landscape and not too much road noise. Not sure if that might change depending on the site.

All in all, a good experience!

Victorian Acres was fine for one night. Not a lot to say about it. It backs up to the highway, but after a long day of driving we slept through the noise. There weren’t any fire pits because “it was too cold”. That’s exactly why we wanted one. The bathhouse was ok. The women’s bathroom was fine, even large for the size of the campground. Unfortunately, both toilets in the men’s bathroom were backed up and broken, huge bummer! 💩 There was a small dog park , we didn’t get to use it since we got in late and left early so I cannot comment on the condition. We were on site 55, easy to access and leave from. It was sort of level, but we still felt like we were tipping sideways a bit in the van. There were 30amp electric and water hookups.

We loved staying here. Nice sites, older picnic tables. Some sites can be tough to get in if you have larger rig. Nice bathrooms. The hikes were nice to do. Several choices in hikes. Dog friendly and kid friendly park.

Centrally located and walkable. There is a small lake close by that we walked the dogs too. Also 20 minute bike ride to GSR Casino. I appreciated the free filtered water dispenser in the office.

I saw that their hiking trails were challenging. I got two dogs and love a challenge. The views the scenory made you feel like you got away from civilization.

A place where their is things to see and do. A must go.

Just car tent camped here with my fiancé and dog over the weekend. We had many camp sites to choose from because it’s back to school time in NE (timing, timing, timing)! Basic tent sights are first come, $15 a night. The park offered firewood ($6) and ice for sale. Lots of hiking trails with different levels of difficulty and elevation. Most drive up camp sites have outhouses nearby. We sometimes drove up to the group tent sites where they have clean bathrooms, running water and showers (need quarters for shower). We had a great time and enjoyed being surrounded by all the lovely trees. Staff were friendly and the park was clean. Only bummer is the steps to the “cave” is still closed.

We stayed here so that we would be within walking distance of Brownville. It took a while to figure out how to make a reservation (you call the River Inn Resort). When I made the reservation, I was told there is no electricity, which is fine since we have solar. However, we were not told there are no tables, or fire rings... there pretty much isn't anything other than land. The land that is there is pretty rough as well. There were very large burs of some sort throughout the grassy areas, which made it difficult for our dog to go anywhere during our trip. There were also an unbelievable amount of gnats, but that is probably due to the proximity to the river. The people at the River Inn Resort, where you check in, were friendly and helpful. However, we would not stay here again.

This campground is mainly for Rvs. The campsites are full hook ups which are $20. The sites each have a picnic table, and fire pit. They are on pavement, level, and are kind of close together. There is a nice playground away from the sites along with a fenced in sand volleyball court. The park also has a frisbee golf course. The lake/pond has a paved sidewalk surrounding it with plenty of benches scattered to just rest or enjoy the lake and it's wildlife. You can hear the bull frogs, geese, and coyotes when the sun goes down. There is a train track behind the lake, and it seems to have a train every few hours that you can hear from your site. A couple of things that I noticed was the large number of vehicles coming through the campgrounds that were not staying hear. It was very busy and noisy. They also have 2 large fenced in dog runs for the pups.

Getting there: A winding drive through Nebraska City to the River’s Edge.

Sites: Mostly open, very little shade. Campground is right on the banks of the Missouri River.

You have to hike a bit to get to the river, but the view is worth it. Cool cave with drawings and graffiti, as well as a used-to-go town and cemetery. Campsites are very green and there are a lot of hiking trails!

It's just that, well, it is in Nebraska.

Grew up camping and hiking here. Not many amenities but the bathrooms are clean and the trails are fantastic. The view is great from the side bluff train. Close to Nebraska city. Tent sites are not too close together. Can get pretty busy on weekends in the summer.

This park is a beautiful lake. We saw white pelicans and blue herons on this visit but it is not uncommon to see hawks, owls, and eagles in the area. This is a new park dedicated this year by the Nemaha NRD: sort of a multi-county natural resource agency found exclusively in Nebraska.

The picnic tables, vault toilets, paved walking trails, playground equipment are all new and well laid out. Gravel slabs with electrical hookup are only $12 a night but that is deceiving because you need to purchase a $5 day pass or $15 annual pass to come to the park. Yet even the some of the primitive sites have slabs for a pop-up and did not appear to cost anything beyond your vehicle pass.

The lake is too small for any boat with more than a trolling motor (there is a boat ramp) and should be outstanding for a kayak or canoe. Fishing should be great here. Paved trail and wide gravel slabs with raised fire pits should make this a great rustic getaway for handicapped campers. There is even a paved path to the end of a jetty of fishing in the lake.

This park is close to the Steamboat Trace Hiking/Biking Trail which is a 26-mile trail following the bluffs and coming within spitting distance of the Missouri River. Peru Nebraska is close, home of one of the oldest colleges this side of the Mississippi. Peru is also close for limited supplies such as Ice and band-aids. Auburn and Nebraska City are both about 10 miles away, Neb City has a Walmart.

I think this park is best for a quiet weekend getaway. I recommend you contact the NRD for an annual pass and take advantage of the other parks they operate. You could hike or Bike the Trace and tent camp for free!

Stayed here in the winter (March) and this was one of the few Nebraska Campgrounds that was open.  

Super clean, owners were friendly and helped us in/out of the campground. 

We were only here for a night, but everything worked that we needed minus water which wasn't insulated to use.  No issues as we were just in for the night, but worth mentioning.

I love Indian Cave for the Oak Woodlands! This is unlike any other campground in Nebraska. There are plenty of camping sites around the park no matter your style, even spots for horses! I prefer the hike in spots myself. There are many trails here with great views of the river as well as family activities for those looking for less walking. The actual cave is not much to write home about as sadly it has been vandalIzed for many years. My favorite spot within 2 hours of Omaha/Lincoln for sure!

I surprised my husband for a mini birthday trip in August of 2015. Yes...we went tent camping in August! The tent campgrounds were pretty empty and we were able to find a nice spot off the road. When we went they were resurfacing the road all the way down to the cave so if you wanted to see the Indian Cave it was about a 2mile hike, which we didn’t mind, aside from the Nebraska, August heat! We loved the hiking trails through the trees and difficult terrain. This camping trip will be another one to complete...maybe in September or October next time 😃

First off let me make it clear, I like this park. But for me this is not the greatest camping area. The sites just are to close for me as a tent camper. The could almost use some of the day use picnic area as primitive sites. The rest of this park is great. For one it is clean, and maintained. The hiking trails are not for bikes, and they have several different levels or skills levels. The look out was pretty cool as well. We will return, and do some more hiking. I am not sure the campsites were fall, but it could be because the applejacks festival going on across the river in Nebraska City.

It has been many years since I went to this park. We use to take my oldest here when he was little. We finally came back, and right off the bat, while entering the park we see 2 eagles soaring above. We drove through the park and wow what a ecological beauty. You get down in the valley by the river you almost forget your in Nebraska. There are also several things to do in this park. First the obvious is all the miles, and miles of trails available, and the fishing. There is also horseback riding, discgolf, a archery range, shooting range. There is also a history museum of the area (which was closed due to covid), a living history area with a blacksmith, broom shop, and soap (which was also closed). There is also a old school house, the old town St Derion cementary, and half breed cementary. Also the stairs to the cave was closed (due to the floods of 2019). Even due to the park not fully open the place is a most see for any camper.

Indian Cave State Park is over 3,000 acres nestled in the banks of the Missouri River in southeast Nebraska. It's relatively short hour-and-a-half drive south makes it both accessible and effective for a secluded getaway.

I arrived on a Saturday morning for a simple solo overnighter and the park did not disappoint. Pro tip: be sure to grab a map on the way in to see which camping spots are open. The trails are all open for hiking but only a few highlighted ones are open for overnight stays.

Fires are allowed only in the ring but with proper prep, that doesn't present a problem. Be aware that though there is plenty of fallen Deadwood, you will be hard pressed to find anything besides cottonwood. If you don't want to spend tons of time gathering fuel, bring in some hardwood for a lasting coal bank.

I stayed right along the river at the start of the river road that leads to the main attraction of the park, the Caves. The Caves is an important historic site with natural formations and ancient petroglyphs.

The power during the week randomly shuts off, the trash is not picked up from trash cans during week, bathrooms not cleaned during week, barely any cell service. BUT, as soon as Friday hits, the trash is collected multiple times a day, no power issues, and bathrooms are cleaned at least once a day. So come here on the weekend, or have a generator or battery bank for during the week.

This is a wonderful park.  There are a lot of things to do and the sites are beautiful.  This review is for the site at Hackberry Hollow.  The sites are back-in sites with electrical hookups and water from a hydrant on the loop.  The end of part of the loop is up the hill above the bathhouse that has flush toilets, showers, and laundry. Lots of birds, racoons, and terrific spiders.  Watch out for ticks though.  Lone Star Ticks were abundant in April.

The park also has a store, a museum, horseshoe pits, archery, trails, and boating on the Missouri river.  There is a cemetary and an old restored town. Indian Cave isn't open to the public because the stairs and boardwalk are in need of repairs.

Camping here was great. It’s a tight campground so there are a lot of neighbors. The views are incredible so bring a camera!
