Sandhill crane migration viewing brings campers to Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, located less than a mile from the Platte River bridge where thousands of cranes gather each spring. The campground divides into east and west sections, with the smaller eastern area positioned closer to prime crane viewing spots and the western section spread around several small fishing ponds.
Sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet with electric, water, and sewer hookups available, though some locations offer only electricity. Susan L. notes the area features "beautiful, mature cottonwood trees" that provide substantial shade across many sites. Gravel pads keep most sites level, though some locations near the water show erosion effects. Sites cluster closely together, making this spot well-suited for groups or families wanting to camp near each other.
Seven sandpit lakes within the recreation area offer fishing opportunities, with lakes 5, 6, and 7 featuring handicap-accessible piers. A swimming beach operates at Lake 7 during warmer months. Free bike rentals from the camp host allow exploration of the grounds and connection to trails leading to the historic Fort Kearny site. "Hearing the Cranes fly over morning and evening is delightful," reports Judy B., who also observed "tremendous sunsets" during her stay.
The facility operates year-round with reservations available, though half the sites remain first-come, first-served. A daily vehicle permit costs $14 for out-of-state visitors in addition to camping fees. Coin-operated showers require quarters, and water availability can be limited during spring migration season. Cell service varies by carrier, with some areas receiving stronger signals than others.
Campers seeking different accommodations can explore campgrounds around Kearney for additional options in the area.
