Very inexpensive, convenient, nice place to stay for a layover. It's a first come basis with I believe 22 RV sites. They have a dump, clean bathrooms with hot showers(which super clean), a playground for the kids and a couple of walking/hiking trails nearby. The very long Cerro Gordo County trail is close to 50 miles long. Believe the cost was only $15 on our summer early September rate and drops to $10 basically in October for a few months, which includes a small fire pi, tabke, and electric! I'll just say a gem of a simple place.

Small campground for 12 smaller than 30 ft rigs or tents. Most are much smaller. Rough bumpy road for miles ether direction on a first come, first serve campground. Has vaulted toilet with no water or other services. If full, would seek off road area on right just as you approach. Has older building of interest. There was a great horned owl in one of the few eucalyptus trees at the campsite. Quiet and nice area to take a hike or two with pretty nice views if you like the high desert landscape. Warning not to travel dirt roads after a rain as you’re likely to get stuck. Better if you come in from the north side(58) on paved roads, but would limit you to boondocking likely because unable to get to this or Selby campgrounds. Selby is another first-come site to the NW
Just a note from Campendium - Closed for construction from May 23 to June 24 so check website.
Campo Alto is a small campground with 17 individual and 2 group sites with an 8 mile 2 lane route from the main road up to flat mountain top. Roads entirely paved with mostly gravel unlevel parking near sites. Easily traveled by Class B rigs or trailers if enough power for steep inclines. Most sites can handle unlimited length but may not get large rigs leveled. My 30ft class C was fine. Had 2 clean lit vault toilet buildings of 2 stalls. Only text messages randomly worked.
Two objections discussed with service personnel. An arrow painted at end of road up at stop sign was demonstrated one way road. It was on the wrong spot, so ignore since most of the sites are to the right. The other serious issue was the large population of cut dead trees laying on the mountain top. A service came up 2 years ago to thin the area but didn’t bother to pick up logs leaving beetles and potential fire more fuel to consume and spread. A disaster waiting for either problem.(Had to help clear private property of down trees since city told us the beetle would spread further.)
It also would be profitable to cut or trim trees to make available the 4 sites closed. Not economical to keep them closed - not to mention the demand for camping.
Pulled in at dust to find dirt roads out into the desert shrubs. Road at times rough, but manageable. Had a beautiful sunset, evening star gazing, and sunrise undisturbed. Awakened with about 2 dozen other campers spread out over the mile I could see. Just couldn't pass up the price.
