    Overview

The Bull River Guard Station was built in 1908 as the Ranger's house and office. This structure was a primary ranger station from 1908 to 1920, surviving the legendary 1910 fires that swept through the area. The cabin was home to Granville "Granny" Gordon (District Ranger), his wife and three daughters. Full vehicle access to the cabin depends on weather conditions. The road is normally plowed within 1 mile of the cabin during winter months.

    Recreation

The Bull River is 24.7 miles long from its headwaters to where it meets the Cabinet Gorge Reservoir. Fish species include westslope cutthroat trout, large scale sucker and mountain whitefish. Visit the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks website for fishing regulations and hunting seasons and permits. Hikers might be interested in two excellent day hiking options located near the guard station: the Pilick Ridge Trail #1036 and the Berray Mountain Trail #967. Both lead to lookouts with impressive views of the Cabinet Mountains. The Berray Mountain Lookout tower, built in the 1930's, is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. For those interested in horseback riding, there is plenty of opportunity to explore the surrounding land. Stock animals are not allowed in the cabin area, but visitors may tie up across the road or 50 yards behind the station. As always, certified weed free hay is required on all Forest Service lands.

    Natural Features

The Bull River Guard Station is located in the Cabinet Mountain Range near the East Fork of the Bull River in the Kootenai National Forest. The Cabinet Mountains were named by early French settlers who thought the mountains had a cabinet-like appearance when viewed from the valley floor. The cabin is located minutes from from the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness area which is home to a large range of wildlife from the high rocks of the mountain goat, mountain sheep, pika and golden eagle, to the lower slopes and brushy canyon bottoms of the beaver, woodrat, and beautiful Western Tanager. Fall foliage in this area is truly stunning with a wonderful assortment of Mountain Maple scarlets, Mountain Ash reds, Alder browns, and the Larch golden yellows.

    Overview

The gem peak lookout is located in the Cabinet Ranger District, situated above the Clark Fork River Area at the southern end of the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness. The original Gem Peak Lookout was activated in 1921 as a "rag outfit"--a pole platform tent near a 15 foot open-platform tower. Today, the renovated structure includes a 225 square foot cabin atop a 30-foot tower with amenities such as a wood heating stove, single beds and of course, the incredible view of the Clark Fork River and the Noxon area. Full vehicle access depends on weather conditions, but typically visitors can drive straight to the lookout.

    Recreation

The Cabinet Ranger District features almost half a million acres of National Forest lands offering a full range of year-round recreational opportunities. Approximately 400 miles of trail are available to the hiker, hunter, and stock user to access various lakes and scenic viewpoints. 150 miles of these trails are open to motorized use. The District maintains almost 400 miles of open road, and many miles of gated roads offer additional opportunities to mountain bikers, berry pickers, and hunters. There is a trailhead located near the lookout with access for both hiking and OHV riding. For more information on designated OHV-riding areas, Click here. Visitors may also enjoy seasonal Huckleberry picking in the land surrounding the lookout.

    Natural Features

The Clark Fork River Area is bordered by the Idaho line on the west and the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness on the east. The Clark Fork River flows north and west through the District, and the Bull and Vermilion Rivers join it from the north. Rugged peaks ranging in elevation from 6,000-8,700 feet overlook the valley bottom. The Kootenai National Forest is dominated by a mixed conifer forest, but there is also an impressive ancient cedar grove set aside as a scenic area. In the spring and throughout the summer, a succession of wildflowers add color to hillsides and meadows and in the fall, stands of western larch and aspen mix yellows with the reds of huckleberry bushes, mountain maples and mountain ash.

Amazing views from this old fire lookout tower!

We did not stay overnight, but it's a beautiful spot, with 360 degree views. It's quiet and peaceful. The road up to the lookout is pretty rough and wouldn't recommend it in a car. There's a lovely hiking trail from the parking area as well which leads to even more spectacular views. Recommended for a day trip or overnight!

Great little private campground in the Wolf Lodge Bay.

This is a great little private campground in the Wolf Lodge Bay, and their added free amenities made this campground a really fun alternative to the usual state park/national forest campsites I go to more often. The swimming pool was well kept, and we really enjoyed using the free canoes. They had a lot of decent looking free firewood, but we were camping during a fire ban and weren't able to use it. (This, of course, is no fault of the campground. But if we camp there again it will be nice to have free firewood!)

We originally booked tent site 3, which I cannot recommend as it had no shade or privacy, but the attendant was very kind and let us switch to a shadier site for free. I think this was tent site 4 or 5, which were much better. Tent site seven looked really nice as well and I would recommend that one. But if we go back we will definitely be booking the island tent site 201, it looked to be the best one of all.

Trout Creek Motel & RV Park

    Rude and condescending

We didnt stay here as when we arrived at 9 pm, the office area and road to get to rv park were way to tight for our 40 ft fight wheel. When calling to let them know, no one answered the phone or returned our calls for two days. I finally was called back by a man that was so condescending and rude I could hardly believe he would talk to me like he did. I he pretty much called me a liar. My husband and I have been in 34 states in the last 2 years full time RV so we know to not get ourselves in a spot that we cant get out of. Lack of experience is not the case here.

Just amazing! Hidden gem of the Idaho Panhandle

Just. Book. You won't regret it.  The campground is just far enough away to feel secluded but not too far that it's hard to get to.  The views of Mirror Lake are just phenomenal.  Clean campground with all the amenities.  The dock is fantastic and the fishing is top notch.  Electric hookups if you are a "glamper".  Campsite A is the best but all sites are great.

Very small spaces with a sardine like feeling

Very nice front desk staff unfortunately the person who designed the campground tried to squeeze every possible inch into a site. Your neighbors look directly into your RV. It would be a great spot if they had about 1/3 rd less sites. Pricey for such small sites. We got a 50x20 site and we had to tip the picnic table on its side to fit in. Our rig fully expanded easily fits into a site much smaller than this.

Truck Broke Down, Won’t refund 1 night stay

We are in Washington supposed to meet family in Montana and stay one night here on the way. Our truck broke down and won’t be fixed for about 3 weeks at dealership. We were told we couldn’t have a refund because of late notice. I tried to call and work it out politely with a basic no. I understand you could have rented but you are the business taking risk. Do NOT punish future renters for something out of their hands. Bad business. I would understand a week or more booked but one night is petty. Also we called Wednesday to cancel and was told someone would call back, I was told we didn’t cancel 48 hours or more and that is longer than 48 hours.

    Awesome place!

We stayed for a night with our cab over camper. Site 204 was great cause it was secluded and out of view from every other camp site and up a little hill with a “cliff” and full hook ups. They offer free firewood and anything on site is complimentary, first come first service and such as far as boats and other fun toys. Next time we’re through, we’ll definitely be staying here.

Waldron Campground — Farragut State Park

    Mostly a great campground

Pros: most sites are large and well appointed with paved driveways and gravel pad for picnic table, fire pit, and tents if you have them. Water and electricity at site. Plenty of trails to walk. Three dump and water stations. Cons: check in is way too late (2 pm), they require you to check in at visitor center, and the parking lot is not large enough to accommodate all the rvs checking in at 2 pm. Other con is no campsites on the water. The shoreline is very scenic but the camp and surroundings not so much. Just overstocked young forest. Also our electric post was damaged so cord kept coming unhooked. Had to bungee cord it.

    10/10

This was my second time camping here. Was happy to return with my family this time. Well ran, but busy place. Free firewood is much appreciated. Dog friendly. Was great to catch up laundry (located directly across from the pool) while the kids swam. All facilities are clean. Free access to peddle boats & canoes to take out on the lake as well as life vest.

    Very nice family campground

Lots of amenities including pool, bathrooms, hot showers, fire pits with free wood and free access to canoes. The sites are small and close together but being at different levels you get some privacy. Giant pines also provided shades that was quite welcome.

One of the reason we spent some time there was to ride on "Trail of Coeur D'Alene".  The trail was not close enough to ride from the campground but could be reach by car in about 20 minutes.

    Jam packed

I’m typically a dispersed camper type but needed to stay close to the city for work. The RV spaces are tight and I was 6ft from neighbors on both sides, but created a nice social environment if that’s what you’re looking for. Lots of amenities like pool, bathrooms, fire pits with free wood, if you’re looking for a resort experience this is a great clean and friendly place to be.

Waldron Campground — Farragut State Park

    Rude & unhelpful staff

I rarely ever give bad ratings, but this was the worst camping experience I’ve ever had. Their check in process reminds me of the DMV—including rude staff. The park itself is massive and has lots to do. Each campground only has one main bathroom, so you’ll be wise to bring something to ride to get to the restrooms because some sites are 1/3 of a mile away.

    Nice proximity to trails

A really odd hillbilly-esque campground. Some of the sites were awkwardly laid out which seemed to confuse quite a few people. Full hookups were nice and so was the proximity to town and the trail system. There’s also a bowling alley and restaurant on site. Limberlost Brewing is a must stop.

    Great family campground

The grounds are very well maintained. There is a small store, a pool, and docks for fishing. Very family friendly with lots of kids and dogs. Small-ish RV parking spots and there was a wasp problem while we were there, but we had a great time. The staff is super friendly!

    Very nice campground

The campground is really nice and offers a lot of amenities, including free fire wood. The rv/trailer sites are very level. I’d only have to argue with the placement of the power supply. I was in site 45 and my cord is on the driver side and my awning and entry door is on the passenger. The power outlets where on the opposite side. Lucky I had a extension cord and it worked out. The camp is very nice and really close to the lake. I fished the pond/marsh and fish did bite. Host were really friendly. The bathrooms could use some new stalls being that they have extremely short stalls. Very nice place to camp.

    Great campground

A very nice small campground. About 2/3 of the sites are full hookups. Rest water and electric. Tent sites. Owners are great people. Very helpful for sure. They have a path you can walk down right to the Kootanie river with chairs and picnic tables to sit on. Very nice. Grounds are clean and tidy. Owners care a lot about their customers. Bathrooms are clean. Showers also clean. Would recommend staying here if your in the area.
