Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Hardin, MT

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Grandview Campground features separate grassy pet areas within each campsite, making it easier for dogs to stay comfortable during summer visits. Full-hookup sites provide ample space for RVs with pets, while tent sites offer grassy spots suitable for camping with dogs. Hardin KOA maintains two large dog parks and a pet washing station for campers traveling with furry companions. Both campgrounds enforce standard leash policies outside designated exercise areas. Sites typically include picnic tables where pets can rest in the shade. Campground bathrooms remain clean and accessible, though shower facilities at Grandview use curtains rather than doors, which may be challenging for campers with pets who need to shower while supervising animals. Dog waste has occasionally been an issue at certain campgrounds, with some visitors failing to clean up after their pets.

Dog-friendly hiking opportunities exist at nearby fishing access sites including Grant Marsh and Captain Clark, where pets must remain leashed while exploring shoreline trails. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, approximately 15 minutes from Hardin KOA, permits leashed pets in outdoor areas but not inside buildings. Summer temperatures often exceed 90°F, requiring extra water and shade for pets. The 7th Ranch RV Park in nearby Garryowen welcomes pets at cabin accommodations, providing a convenient alternative during inclement weather. Most campgrounds maintain quiet hours starting around 10pm, when excessive barking may result in warnings from staff. Hardin's proximity to Interstate 90 means veterinary services are available within reasonable driving distance in case of pet emergencies. Campground stores typically stock limited pet supplies for unexpected needs.

    Billings KOA Holiday

Surprisingly nice stay (and those showers!)

We normally avoid KOA campgrounds - preferring to stay away from large campers pushed together. Our experience was not what we expected. We were the only ones in the last loop. With the way our teardrop faced we couldn’t see anyone else. This gave us a small campground feel.

There are lots of activities - from mini-golf to dog park to river access. We took advantage of the amazing showers.

Walking around was a surprise too. We followed a trail by the river and it led around a pond  it was short but away from everything.

    7th Ranch RV Park

    Best park yet!

We pulled in yesterday and were immediately impressed by the warm and professional check in processs. You are given a map of the camp that has helpful information about the surrounding area on the back (vet and doctor contacts, etc.) Charles leads you to your spot, which is level gravel and spacious. Each and every spot has an incredible view of the hills.

The camp is on a Mennonite farm, and the family has outdone themselves with making the surrounding area beautiful and clean. All sites are pull thru. No dog park but a great couple of trails up the hills behind the camp. Extremely family friendly. And just 6 miles from Little Bighorn Battlefield. We hope to be back!

    Grandview Campground

The office behind the front counter is really gross. Unclean. Junk piled up to the ceiling. Unprofessional.

Dog poo is everywhere. People aren’t picking up after their pets.

    Billings KOA Holiday

    All around great experience

Friendly staff, clean, well maintained grounds, quiet and charming. This place had everything we needed for a few nights of work, rest and play. And to top it off the internet worked great. They have a pool, mini golf, kids play grounds, and an enclosed dog park. The laundry and bathrooms were exceptionally clean and updated. We splurged a little got the deluxe pull through with the swing, patio and fire pit, and saved a little with our AAA membership. And, after having gone through death valley and the High Sierra Valley having the lovely tree coverage was awesome. This camp ground is tucked into a residential area, and far enough off the interstate to not hear the noise, but close enough to town and all the other amenities to make it very convenient. It’s also on the river, but we didn’t have a chance to take advantage of that on this trip. I only gave four stars because we were positioned right behind the maintenance residence and there was a lot of noisy activity coming and going at all hours. I’m not complaining, they did an excellent job of maintaining and I’m sure if we were in any other location on site we’d not been bothered by this at all. We’d definitely stay here again.

    Billings KOA Holiday

    Resort style...

Never have we stayed at a KOA before so this stay was different than anything we’ve experienced before. The pull through site we had included a patio with swing and picnic table- but not much on space... probably only 15 feet between rigs(?) however the campground had plenty of activities and amenities, including mini golf, pool, lodge, dog park, playground, ice cream stand and a BBQ joint, and the mini golf, and food stuffs were all an additional fee. We were only staying one night, and didn’t partake in any of the activities, and at the price of the per night rate, I felt that maybe we wouldn’t stay at another KOA, mostly because of the spacing issue, and the fact that it didn’t really feel like a campground at all... but like I said, we are used to slightly more rustic conditions, lol. It is worth mentioning that just a few miles away is Pictograph State Park- and that was pretty cool, and a beautiful walk after a day of driving!

Guide to Hardin

Camping options near Hardin, Montana include several established sites located along the Yellowstone and Bighorn River corridors. The area sits at approximately 2,900 feet elevation with summer temperatures frequently reaching the 90s and winter lows regularly dropping below freezing. The terrain features rolling prairie grasslands interspersed with cottonwood stands along waterways, creating natural windbreaks during camping season.

What to do

Fishing access points: Two nearby fishing access sites provide camping opportunities with river access. At Captain Clark, "Approx 4 spots right on the Yellowstone River. Pretty buggy. Bring your mosquito repellent. The site is experiencing some river bank erosion due to runoff," according to Zach S.

Visit nearby historical sites: 7th Ranch RV Park in Garryowen places campers near Little Bighorn Battlefield. "Custer actually rested his troops at this site just prior to starting the battle," notes David N. The location offers "beautiful scenery all around. Very close to Custer State Park," adds Peter W.

Riverside hiking: Mallards Landing fishing access provides "riverside camping quiet beautiful view" with space "for my dog to Rome," though Charles O. mentions they "did have Bug issues." The site offers good trail access along the riverbank suitable for dog walking.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Grandview Campground earns praise for maintenance. "The showers were hot and worth it!" reports Mimi, who adds "The gal who checked me in was super nice." Another camper notes it has "Clean bathhouse and laundry. Hostess is friendly and knowledgeable about the area."

River views: Many campers appreciate the natural setting of dispersed sites. At Captain Clark, "Each of them faces the river with a firepit and a table. There is a vault toilet near the boat launch. The spots are relatively secluded," according to Morgan B., who also mentions "LOTS of cool bird activity."

Pet-specific amenities: Hardin KOA has invested in dedicated pet facilities. "New owners have been here about a year and you can see all of the new improvements! Cute store! Vending machines in the laundromat, one offers ice cream and frozen food. 2 Huge dog parks and pet wash," writes Kristy M.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer visits require heat preparation. "Our site does not have shade. Pads are all gravel and leveling maybe needed," notes Peter W. about 7th Ranch. Late spring brings mosquitoes – Captain Clark reviewers mention being "Pretty buggy. Bring your mosquito repellent."

Water quality issues: Some campers report water concerns. At 7th Ranch, one reviewer mentioned "our site was not level and the water had an unpleasent taste." Bring drinking water or treatment options if staying at sites with hookups.

Noise factors: Train tracks run near several campgrounds. At Captain Clark, "you can still hear the road. But you're hearing it from a distance. It's far from overpowering," writes Kevin C. Two Leggins fishing access receives mixed reviews with one camper noting "Not a place to spend the night. Too many bad things happen here at night."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Captain Clark offers "a great swimming hole on the other side of the boat launch," according to Morgan B., though she cautions "The Yellowstone River is a fast moving and dangerous river."

Playground amenities: Billings KOA Holiday offers family-friendly facilities within driving distance. "There are lots of activities - from mini-golf to dog park to river access," writes Art S. Another camper notes it has "a small fishing pond, swimming pool and adventure golf."

Bathroom access: Facilities vary greatly between sites. Grandview has "shower facilities that use curtains rather than doors," making it difficult to supervise children. At Captain Clark, expect only "a vault toilet near the boat launch" with no running water.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Prepare for uneven sites at several locations. At 7th Ranch, "Pads are all gravel and leveling maybe needed," notes Peter W., while Richard G. mentions "our site was not level and the water had an unpleasent taste."

Size restrictions: Many fishing access sites limit RV size. Captain Clark notes specify "Length limit on vehicles is 20 feet. They clarify 20 ft tow vehicle and 20 ft trailer. Don't know how strict they are on this. It would be tough to get anything big in here anyway."

Dog-friendly RV hookups: Love's RV Stop provides convenient access for RVers with pets. Jennifer H. describes it as having "Clean, new, easy in and out, nice amenities. Can't beat the proximity to gas & propane, great convenience store and nice RV Stop amenities. Dog park, pickle ball courts, trash, playground, great views."
