Best RV Parks & Resorts near Darby, MT

Travellers Rest Cabins & RV Park in Darby provides full hookup sites with electric, sewer, and water connections. The park accommodates various RV sizes on gravel pads with adequate spacing between sites. "Very full park with mostly long-term guests on gravel pads, no grass. Spots very close together but each site had a picnic table," noted one visitor about Black Rabbit RV in nearby Hamilton. This park offers 50-amp service and big-rig friendly sites along the Bitterroot River. Lake Como Campground, located west of Darby, provides more basic RV accommodations with drinking water and 30-amp electric hookups, though without sewer connections or dump stations.

Several RV parks in the Bitterroot Valley remain open year-round, while others like Lake Como operate seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with stronger signals in Hamilton and weaker coverage in more remote locations. Navigation to some campgrounds requires careful planning, as narrow roads with low-hanging branches can create challenges for larger motorhomes. Pet policies are generally accommodating, with most parks allowing dogs, though some have restrictions. Dump stations are limited outside established RV parks, so travelers should plan accordingly. A recent review mentioned that "the park is quiet and the RV spots are generally pretty wide, all pull throughs" when describing the riverside setting at Black Rabbit RV.

    Black Rabbit RV

    Compact but Quiet Spot

Very full park with mostly long- term guests on gravel pads, no grass. Spots very close together but each site had a picnic table- no grills. Visitors friendly but staff were marginal. Small laundry room with old machines. Convenient location but check- in early during peak season.

The Inn at Philipsburg RV Park

    In town, as advertised

Had a van battery issue so needed to plug in for the cold night. Is as advertised, not for typical bookdockers. Owner is nice and accommodating. Maybe 12 sites with some long term renters - it appeared. All hook ups available up to 50amp. Not quite close enough to down town to walk (in winter). Philipsburg is an awesome small Montana town that’s worth a stop.

    Chief Looking Glass Campground

    Solid Place To Stay

I rolled in mid-afternoon and was able to find a great spot to camp for a couple of days.  The sites were well dispersed and clean with picnic tables and fire pits available.

AT&T phone service was available and at good speeds.  I chose to stay the extra day and was able to work remotely from the campground with my hotspot.

$18/night for out of state travelers with no hookups was a bit steep.

Good site and will be back!

    Charles Waters Campground

    Quiet camping in the Bitterroots.

Nice little campground in the Bitterroot Valley. It seemed that there were as many dogs as people in the campground. Sites varied in size and shape and shade. I like the sites on the far side of the loop as they are closer to the creek and away from the dusty road. Water at the spigots was good, but I was a bit concerned that they were placed so close to the vault toilets. There are some pull through sites as well as back in, but since it’s first come, it’s luck of the draw in what you get. I got there around 2 on a Sunday and had 3 sites to pick from. All of the sites were full by 4pm. There are some nice hiking and horseback riding trails across the road, and there is a forest road that goes all the way to the top of the mountains with picnic tables to watch the sunset or sunrise (when the smoke doesn’t cloud the view).

    Chief Looking Glass Campground

A very nice, small riverside campground

All the forest service campgrounds in the area were full and we happened across this place. We stayed 3 days & it was very peaceful. Each day a few sites opened up mid-day. There is a beautiful flat water river with two access points and locals tube and paddle here. There are tent sites, back-in sites, and pull through sites. Our site was on the river though separated by a thin strip of woods. At night we could hear coyotes. There are a lot of people who drive through looking around and kicking up dust, but that's the only negative. There are no hookups, only a central hand pump for water and no dump station. Prices are cheaper for residents and those with state fishing license (who have already contributed to the up keep).

    Sam Billings Memorial Campground

    The best in SW Montana

12 sites with good tables and fire rings. This is a well maintained NFS campground. 3 vault toilets that are kept clean. Sites #1 & #2 get the most sun, are the largest, and can accommodate any size RV. The remaining sites vary in size. #2 can easily hold 5 full size trucks side by side, or three medium size trailers/5th wheels with their tow vehicles. It also has 3 large tables, plenty of open ground for tents, and is ideal for large groups and families. Toilets are located across from site 3, between 5/6, across from 12. #7 is low ground camping you walk down to with minimal shade and perfect for hot weather days.

The exit is at site 12, one way travel thru the campground. Across the street from the exit is the entry to sites 1-4 horse camping. Small sites with table, fire ring, and enough room for a small tent. There are 3 large metal structures with 3 chains each for horses and 2 horizontal tie out bars. No room to park horse trailers on that pull thru. One trailer spot across from site 4 by the “stock water trail” sign, the rest can park 50 yards down the road at the trail head/turn around. There are 2 additional tie out areas here for horses and plenty of room for horse trailers and several other vehicles.

Be sure to read the notice above the envelope box before you pay. From weather dependent dates chosen by the Rangers there is no cost from late Oct to late May. Otherwise it is $10 per night, $5 with golden or access passes.

No cell service, only 1 mile to the paved road, Ranger station is only about 1/2 mile down that paved road. The Rangers are proactive in sharing any important information such as severe weather, bear activity, or any other notable activity.

Details: Ranger station on the main road less than a mike from the entrance. They show up once a week Ravialli county sheriff is who to call on weekends and holidays, they will respond Be bear aware in season Equestrian specific campsites Trailhead next to the CG So much firewood laying around There are some karens that have been “coming here my whole life” and think they own the place; avoid Only three site requires walking access, the rest are drive right in to. Only a few sites so if its great weather or holiday show up mid week or even a week ahead if you can Free stays out of season, otherwise it’s a daily fee, pay at the entrance sign

River's Fork Lodge & RV Park

    Hidden Gem

What an unbelievable place. Found this place on a total random pick. I was actually a little concerned about the cell/WiFi ability with being so potential remote. When we booked our RV spot with Porter he mentioned that Verizon cell service wasn’t very good but they did offer free WiFi which was extremely important as my wife needed it for work. When we arrived we found zero cell service but the WiFi was a savor. Now depending of what your here for no cell and WiFi could be just fine, I surely enjoyed the seclusion and being disconnected from the world.

We stayed in site #2 pretty close to the lodge which I think helped with the WiFi signal. The sites are large and easily fit our 28’ trailer and truck. Definitely could fit any size class A rig. There are full hookups at each site 20, 30, and 50amp at each site as well I believe. Not sure if you can get any closer to the river. The back of the trailer was probably less than 10 ft. to the river. Outstanding view.

The fishing was spot on, right on the river you don’t have to even drive anywhere if you don’t want. They also offer kayak rentals. Unfortunately I didn’t realize how warm, calm, and popular the river was. Next time we come back we will definitely float the river.

If there was really anything they could add, would possibly be something for kids to do. Just as a family of four with a 3 and 6 year old, they can only fish so much.

But over all 5 star, unfortunately this place won’t stay a hidden gem for much longer, can’t wait to come back. A huge thanks to Porter again!

    Black Rabbit RV

    Nice Campground on the river

Nice little park in Hamilton. If you were wondering why its called "Black Rabbit" RV park, take a look at some of the photos below. Contactless check-in if you don't arrive during business hours. The park is on the river. It was a short walk from our RV to a cool spot with chairs and a fire pit on the river. The park is quiet and the RV spots are generally pretty wide, all pull throughs.

The park is in town, so very convenient if you want to get groceries. The staff was friendly and helpful!

    Sula Country Store and Resort

    Nicest, cleanest, friendliest

I was camping at a nearby national park site that had a flyer for Camp Sula, saying that if you show the receipt from your stay you can use Camp Sulas shower, laundry facilities and wifi at no cost. I arrived there and the ladies working in the combination store/restaurant/gas and coffee station were so friendly and down to earth. I was given a towel and shampoo/conditioner for the shower, they had complimentary and coin washing machines, and coin dryers, all very efficient. After my shower and waiting for clothes to dry, I walked around the camp, the log cabins are adorable and cozy, each has its own porch, picnic table and adjacent fire pit. There is free put-put golf, horseshoes, tetherball and a small well stocked fishing pond with benches to watch the action or simply admire the beauty of the surroundings. It is close to the main highway but tucked back enough you feel "away" from the bustle. I enjoyed myself so much I inquired about camping there for the night & I would only need a parking space because I sleep in my truck bed canopy. They were full (accommodates RVs and tents) but offered a makeshift spot right by the creek. It was perfect. Because of COVID, they had limited reservations for dinner, and practiced social distancing and requested patrons wear masks. Not everyone participated with their request but were equally treated with kindness and respect. I highly recommend their breakfast, big fluffy pancakes and local meats. They kept the restaurant, showers & bathroom & store very very clean. The location is a landmark, the Lewis and Clark expedition camped there on their way to discover the west. I highly recommend them

Guide to Darby

Camping sites near Darby, Montana offer access to the Bitterroot National Forest with elevations ranging from 3,900 to 8,500 feet across the region. Summer temperatures typically reach 75-85°F during the day with nighttime lows in the 40s. Cell service remains inconsistent throughout the area, with some campgrounds providing better connectivity than remote dispersed camping options.

What to do

Fishing access: 0.25 miles of riverfront. At Anglers Roost Campground, the name indicates the primary attraction. "A pleasant walk along the water provides ample bank fishing for the plentiful trout. Other fishing spots including Lake Como are just a short drive away," notes a camper who appreciated the variety of angling opportunities.

Hiking trails: 8-mile lake loop. The area around Lake Como Campground offers excellent hiking options. "The loop trail around the lake is around 9 miles, and worth every step. The constant view of mountains and the clear lake are phenomenal," states one visitor who enjoyed the trail system.

Swimming: Warm lake waters. Lake Como provides surprisingly comfortable swimming conditions. "Lake Como is a dammed river that sits at a high elevation," explains a camper, while another mentions "Super warm water" as a highlight of their stay, making it suitable for summer recreation even at higher elevations.

What campers like

Affordability: $12 tent camping. Budget-conscious travelers appreciate Travellers Rest Cabins & RV Park for its reasonable rates. "I have only tent camped here. Really nice flat grass for tents. $12 gets you campsite showers and toilets, WiFi and coin laundry," reports one camper who found value in the basic amenities.

Privacy: Well-spaced sites. The layout at Blodgett Campground offers campers separation despite limited capacity. "Only five sites so come early to this free Campground. You're allowed to stay 14 days. Clean sites, vault toilet, BEAUTIFUL granite mountains on both sides," observes a visitor who appreciated the campground's setting.

Dark skies: Minimal light pollution. RV campers enjoy stellar stargazing conditions at some rv sites near Darby, Montana. "The nights are dark and star gazing is wonderful," notes one camper at Anglers Roost, highlighting an often-overlooked benefit of camping in this less developed region of Montana.

What you should know

Seasonal limitations: Late May through early September. Most campgrounds in the Bitterroot Valley operate within a narrow window. "Lake Como Campground, located west of Darby, provides more basic RV accommodations with drinking water and 30-amp electric hookups," with operations running "from Memorial Day through Labor Day."

Booking challenges: Limited availability. Popular sites fill quickly, especially at smaller facilities like Sam Billings Memorial Campground. "Only a few sites so if its great weather or holiday show up mid week or even a week ahead if you can," advises a regular visitor familiar with the competition for spots.

Fee variations: Free to moderate. Some campgrounds waive fees seasonally. "From weather dependent dates chosen by the Rangers there is no cost from late Oct to late May. Otherwise it is $10 per night, $5 with golden or access passes," explains a camper detailing the flexible pricing structure at Sam Billings.

Tips for camping with families

Flat terrain access: Good for younger children. Black Bear Campground offers family-friendly terrain. "Secluded, rustic, and free campsite by Skalkaho Creek. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit," reports a visitor who found the area manageable for family camping despite being rustic.

Water safety considerations: Monitor creek access. Families should supervise children near water features. "You have access to the creek with most sites (look for the trail in the back of your site)," notes a Black Bear camper, pointing out the proximity to water that requires parental attention.

Limited facilities: Plan for basics. Most family-friendly campgrounds have minimal amenities. "There are no hookups of any kind, no potable water, and no trash service so pack it out," explains a camper at Black Bear Campground, emphasizing the need to prepare thoroughly when camping with children.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Varies by location. RV sites near Darby, Montana offer different utility options. "Full hook ups" are available at some locations, while others provide partial hookups. "The campground has water and electricity. It's a great deal, especially for seniors with the America the Beautiful pass. We paid $12.50 a night," reports a Lake Como visitor.

Site dimensions: Width variations. Size considerations matter when selecting rv camping near Darby. "The sites are pretty spacious. The campground sits below the dam with less wind," notes a Lake Como camper, indicating adequate space for standard RVs despite being in a more rustic setting.

Seasonal restrictions: Different operating dates. RVers should verify operating seasons before planning trips. Some campgrounds maintain limited seasonal access while others remain open year-round with reduced services during shoulder seasons.
