2 Bar Lazy H RV Campground

    Nothing special but reliable

Easy access from interstate and Rv friendly fuel stations. Located on a hill with well maintained gravel roads and pull throughs 30/50 Amp and full hookups. Wifi fast but weak, no laundry (yet), no cable and the OTA TV is crappie. Open skies for satellite TV, 2 miles from downtown. We didn't use the bathrooms or showers but they are available. Lots of spaces designated for tent campers.

The Inn at Philipsburg RV Park

    In town, as advertised

Had a van battery issue so needed to plug in for the cold night. Is as advertised, not for typical bookdockers. Owner is nice and accommodating. Maybe 12 sites with some long term renters - it appeared. All hook ups available up to 50amp. Not quite close enough to down town to walk (in winter). Philipsburg is an awesome small Montana town that’s worth a stop.

Sportsman Lodge, Cabins & RV Park

    Great spot, very friendly

This is a great spot in a tiny town south of Butte Montana. They have a couple cabins, several motel rooms and about 10 full hookup, all grass, RV spots. Also a large area for car/tent camping. The grounds are meticulously maintained by the owner and it has nice views of the bluffs and mountains all around it. Walking distance to the restaurant and bar in town if that’s your thing. Quality hookups at each site, and each site has its own trash can. Clean bathrooms and laundry on site. Owners are very present and attentive on site and super friendly. Picnic tables at every site. One shared fire pit out front of the office. It’s in a very small town, with several fishing spots nearby. Very peaceful location. We would stay again.

A few things to be aware of:

    • All sites are back in, but they are reasonably wide and very long.
    • It is about a mile or two from the interstate which is convenient but you can occasionally hear a large truck pass by.
    • There is a train track nearby, we heard about one train per day in the morning.
    • We were here in July and there were some mosquitos. If you plan to be outside probably bring a citronella candle or bug spray.

    Divide Bridge Campground

    Great Forest Service Campground

Clean vault toilets. Friendly Hosts on sight. Grounds well maintained. WATER AVAILABLE. Came in dry and filled up with water. Lower campground has several sites on water. Upper is more rustic with larger lots. (We have a 40 foot fifth wheel) Lovely hike to the top of the mountain over looks the park and the Big Hole River. Boat ramp in the campground and also one at the main entrance (fun for dogs ) Only 10.00/night. 4 stars because the mosquitoes were INSANE! Apparently only in July and August.

    Butte KOA

    Easy on/off the interstate

This was our first stop after leaving Yellowstone.  Drove up to Butte because my husband wanted to go to a local exhibition that was happening that weekend and see Our Lady of the Rockies.  I didn't really walk around the campground, but it seemed like a smaller KOA.  It is easy to find right off the interstate.  I thought perhaps the highway noise would be an issue, but it was not.  As we were a week into our 2 week trip, I used our down time here to do some laundry.  The laundry room was in back of the store/main office where you register when you arrive.  I believe it was open 24 hours.  To my delight, you could also order pizza in the store.  I think they could have brought it to our site, but I couldn't remember the site number when I ordered so I just went back in about 30 min to get my order.  It was very simple, you only had two options--pepperoni or cheese, but the pizza was hot and tasted decent.  Not at all what I expected.  We did partake of the pool, which my toddler thought was fantastic and there was a small older playground next to the pool.  This KOA is right next to the Butte Visitor's Information Bureau and some nice looking walking trails.  We were in a site with full hook-ups, gravel pad with concrete patio, grill, firepit, picnic table and two rocking chairs.  I would have loved to spend some time in the rocking chairs had we not had some wonderful thunderstorms.  Had great cell service with Verizon as this campground is pretty much smack dab in the middle of Butte.

Bernie & Sharons Riverfront RV Park

    Nice campground

I called 30 minutes before our arrival for a tent camping spot and the host was easily able to accommodate us. Two men met us in a golf cart and drive us to our nice grassy site. The campground had coin showers with hot water and a family friendly rec room.

    Galena Gulch

if you're small, skip the campground

Big rigs have a great space at the bottom of the hill... but if you're in a truck, van, etc., head on up the hill. The road is in great shape. There are some pullouts, but look for a road on the right (veer left at the private drive; you'll see a sign) and you'll find a great site with a fire ring and somewhat level ground. Chances are it'll be COVERED in cow poop, but hey. It's quiet, aside from the mooing of cows, and totally private. There's probably more up the road, too, I just didn't go further. Solitude.

    Fairmont RV Resort

    Nice location

Nice location for an overnight rest spot. We had a tent site, close to the road, but traffic wasn’t bad after dark. Site was grassy. No fires allowed for obvious reasons. We were the only tent guests. Most people looked like they were long term RV’rs. IMMACULATE bathrooms and showers with hot water and pressure ! There’s a hot springs nearby, a water slide, golf course and resort hotel/casino. Easy access to I-15. Only drawback I could see was that there was dog poop everywhere. Bags were provided, but apparently people don’t use them :(

    Basin Canyon

Very Small 2 site free primitive campground

Basin Canyon Campground and Picnic Area in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest is a bare basics campground with only 2 sites(an old 3rd site can be found but is over grown and falling apart). Be careful not to drive right by the site as the sign for the campground is missing. The two campsites sit on the Boulder River side of the road. A picnic area and two outhouses sit on the other side of the road. One of the two sites is a very nice site next to the river with a picnic table and metal fire ring. This site appears to get heavy use as the ground is all bare dirt. The other site sits closer to the road in a grassy area. The second site also has a metal fire ring and picnic table. This campground does not have water(but looks like it may have in the past) and does not have trash service, so be sure to pack out your trash and bring plenty of water for your stay. Across the road is the picnic area which has three large picnic tables and two concrete fire pits. A rock ring fire pit has been placed in the picnic area and this might be a safer place for a fire at the picnic site do to the encroaching forest at the concrete fire pit location. The picnic area could use a little maintenance. The picnic area side of the road has two outhouses. These are old school wooden framed forest service outhouses, but are very nice, clean and well stocked inside. I did find one more former campsite/picnic site that has pretty much been reclaimed by the forest and the table is falling apart.

Spacious sites: Bernie & Sharons Riverfront RV Park offers generous spacing. "It has large spaces and nice walking area. It is nice that the owners have intentionally kept prices down too," writes Melanie A. Sites include grassy areas between camping spots.

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain high cleanliness standards. "The bathrooms at Boulder Creek Lodge are huge clean shower stalls," notes Aaron L. This attention to maintenance extends to common areas.

Affordability: Lower rates compared to other Montana destinations. "At less than 40$ for a site with 30 amp this was a steal compare to what we paid at other campgrounds," mentions JP C. about Bernie & Sharon's Riverfront RV Park.

Mountain views: Surrounding landscapes visible from camping areas. "The snow capped mountains were a nice touch," writes Don R. about Indian Creek RV Campground, highlighting the natural scenery despite highway proximity.

What you should know

Highway noise: Some campgrounds are located near interstate roads. "This campground is adequate and has easy access from I90... Only downside was the freeway but it wasn't a problem," states Don R. Light sleepers may want to request sites farther from highways.

Weather variability: Spring and fall nights can drop below freezing. "Frost free spigots were good especially since the weather at night was below freezing," notes Chris D., highlighting the importance of proper equipment for shoulder seasons.

Reservation requirements: Summer months fill quickly at popular locations. "We were planning on staying for just one night and ended up staying for two," reports Bernie Z. about 2 Bar Lazy H RV Campground, suggesting flexibility in travel plans.

Mosquito presence: Bug protection recommended in warmer months. "Only cons are the mosquitos, slight highway noise, and trains can be heard every now and then," advises Samantha S., emphasizing the need for insect repellent.

Tips for camping with families

Recreation facilities: Look for campgrounds with game rooms. "After we ate, we went down stairs to the game room and played pool, table soccer and checkers for about 4 hours," shares Aaron L. about Boulder Creek Lodge, highlighting indoor entertainment options.

Speed limits: Observe posted restrictions for safety. "Just be sure to NEVER drive over 5mph as its the number one rule that is the quickest way to get booted out of there. It's for the children's safety," warns Casey L. about Fairmont RV Park.

Playground access: Some facilities include play areas. "They have a general store thats cute and homey and the park itself is very spacious. Clean restroom and shower areas," mentions Casey L., noting family-friendly amenities.

Outdoor games: Look for campgrounds with activity spaces. "Very spacious spots, some mountain views. A bit of road traffic noise, but still quiet," notes Lynn A., describing the layout that allows for recreational activities.

Tips from RVers

Site preparation: Gravel pads require proper setup. "The campground as well laid out plenty of room to drive around with big rigs. Each site has a picnic bench," Bernie Z. reports about 2 Bar Lazy H RV Campground.

Electricity considerations: Amperage options vary by location. "Wiring held up great, ran both AC's at the same time with no issues," reports Samantha S. about Bernie & Sharon's Riverfront RV Park, indicating reliable electrical service.

Hookup reliability: RV parks in Anaconda-Deer Lodge County typically provide consistent utilities. "This is an older park, and the amenities are lacking," cautions CATHLEEN B. about Big Sky RV Park, suggesting RVers check specific site features when booking.

Pet policies: Most facilities welcome dogs but enforce cleanup rules. "Dog friendly," notes Laura W. about Boulder Creek Lodge, though specific restrictions may apply at individual campgrounds.
