    Montauk State Park Campground

relaxing and enjoyable; remote off grid

We are trout fishers. This place is perfect for easy stream and running water fishing. We stayed in loop 3, site 325. We walked over to the "river" about 75 yards from our campsite. The water is shallow and clear. it was perfect. You are off grid in this park with Verizon (our service) or T-Mobile (another guest looking for connection). The lodge has Wi-Fi and I was able to pick up signal to text and call when standing outside. No connection for any data at our camp site. No Over air TV stations. One FM radio station. I you want to have any entertainment, BRING DVDs.

Timbuktu Campground — Echo Bluff State Park

    Wonderful Swimming Hole

This is a really nice spot for tent camping - even though it’s clearly geared towards RV camping. Make sure to book a walk-in campsite if you’re tent camping, otherwise you’ll be in the lot with the RVs (no trees, no privacy etc see first picture). You’ll have to carry your gear to your site, but not too far. Each walk in site is fairly isolated and separate from the other site by trees. Each site has a wood tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring with grate. If you want you could even go to the lodge (walking distance) for a meal and skip the cooking! Book your spot in advance as it seems like they fill up quickly.

    Richard's Canoe Rental & Campground

Nice spot to camp and the people are Great!!

We stayed here to utilize their shuttle services for kayaking the 11 point. It was the week before the Memorial Day holiday and we had the place to ourselves! There are bathrooms available and hot showers, awesome people to chat with and a cool dog named Dan. We stayed in the primitive camping section but were informed there are also cabins available. Our site was just what we needed with a Rim fire pit and a couple of picnic tables. Richards definitely catered to us as we decided at the last minute to take another float and they jumped right in and made it happen for us. The convince of having your own vehicle waiting for you after a long day of floating is worth every dime you pay for it! I would highly recommend Richards for their shuttle services and camping area.

    Twin Bridges Canoe Campground

    Early season, limited services

Tent camped here with a group of private boat paddlers from all over the country. Campground operations had not really started for the season. I arrived after dark and could not find the tent campsites. Nearly drove into deep mud on gravel road past RV sites. Fortunately had just enough cell signal to access their website. Found a campground map three layers deep on reservation page and located my group.

Tent sites were well-located along the river with basic tables and fire rings. I never found the store to be open so paid camping fee at bar and cafe at entrance. Great breakfast. $25/night for tents.  Grass had not been mowed and was deep in tent area. RV sites appear to be a work in progress with much erosion around the new pads and access road. What may have been a shower house had key code locks but there was never anyone to ask. Bathrooms near the entrance lacked tp in some stalls. All one afternoon and evening a group of kids with gas weed trimmers  noisely worked on a slope adjacent to the RV area.

This campground should improve over time a the management appears to be developing the grounds.

    Ozarks Mountain Springs RV Park

    Wonderful campground!

If you’re traveling through southern Missouri and looking for a park to stay in, this is a great choice! Right off the interstate and easy to get in to. Site are graveled and level, and most are full hookups. The majority also have picnic table and fire pit. Plenty of potty spots for the babies scattered throughout the park and a 25 acre trail area. John, the owner, is a great guy! Friendly and welcoming, he keeps the park well maintained. Will definitely be using again!

Guide to Pomona

Situated at 1,100 feet elevation in the Missouri Ozarks, the area experiences mild summers with temperatures typically ranging 75-90°F and cooler evenings around 60°F. Most cabin facilities operate from March through November, with limited winter availability due to occasional snow and ice conditions.

What to do

Fishing excursions: Richard's Canoe Rental & Campground offers direct access to the 11 Point River for fishing trips. As one visitor noted, "This is a great place to start your 11 point river trip! Stop here to rent your canoes or kayaks and get dropped off wherever. You can drive to Greer Spring that is a spring that comes out of a cave."

Trout fishing: Montauk State Park Campground provides stocked trout waters for anglers. A camper explained, "This is one of Missouri's trout parks you will find a majority of campers are there to fish. You can purchase a trout tag at the lodge for $3.00, and it will allow you to keep 4 trout per day with a possession limit of 8."

River floating: Several outfitters offer float trips on nearby rivers with shuttle service. According to one visitor at Twin Bridges Canoe Campground, "First the floating was excellent on the northfolk River. Great wildlife along the way including cranes, turtles, ducks, fish. Fantastic on site restaurant with bar and grill that has Saturday karaoke and Friday live bands."

What campers like

Natural springs: The area features multiple cold springs feeding local rivers. A camper at Montauk described, "Cold spring fed, stocked stream, which is the start of the current river. If you're trout fishing, you'll need your MO state fishing license, as well as a daily trout tag within the park."

River access campsites: Harveys Circle B Campground provides sites alongside the Jack's Fork River. One camper shared, "We stayed in our RV on a spot with river view. Was really nice! They have floating outfitter to rent or they will but your own boat in."

Family-friendly activities: Many campgrounds offer activities beyond water recreation. A visitor at Timbuktu Campground — Echo Bluff State Park commented, "This campground has full amenities. Clean bathrooms and showers. Firewood available for purchase and even WiFi. The WiFi doesn't reach the primitive campsites but that was perfect for us to unplug! It was a great place to take our kids!"

What you should know

Booking timeline: Reservations for cabins near Pomona should be made 3-6 months in advance, especially for summer weekends. A camper at Echo Bluff noted, "The only negative is that we have experienced are that you need to reserve your side months in advance because this campground is so popular."

Shade availability: Newer campgrounds may lack mature trees. As one Echo Bluff visitor mentioned, "The only other negative is that all of the campsites are out in the open with no shade. But other than that it's easy to see why the state park is a perfect representation of how much pride Missouri takes in its conservation and park system."

Off-season considerations: Some facilities have limited services outside peak season. At Twin Bridges, a camper found, "Early season, limited services. I never found the store to be open so paid camping fee at bar and cafe at entrance. Great breakfast. $25/night for tents. Grass had not been mowed and was deep in tent area."

Tips for camping with families

Cabin alternatives: Some camping cabins near Pomona offer hotel-like amenities. According to a Montauk visitor, "You can also rent modern hotel suite-style cabins and eat in the dining hall so you don't have to cook. Nice general store too. We didn't take advantage of it, but there were a lot of activities aimed at kids."

Swimming areas: Look for designated swimming spots for safer water play. At Harveys Circle B Campground, a reviewer mentioned, "Super clean campground. Great swim area. Shower house is basic."

On-site conveniences: Laura Ingalls Wilder RV Park provides family-friendly amenities. A visitor shared, "Beautiful yard, walking trails and playground with resident kitty. Convenient location across from Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose carefully to ensure adequate space. At Twin Bridges Canoe Campground, one RVer noted, "The RV sites have zero shade and very little grass so it's mostly clay mud on the ground, which would have been fine but since it rained it made a giant mud soup mess."

Access considerations: Some cabin camping areas near Pomona have terrain challenges. At Ozarks Mountain Springs RV Park, a camper reported, "Site was fairly level. Definitely a wooded setting. Could tell work was being done to clear away brush and debris."

Utility connections: Check hookup options before booking. As one visitor at Laura Ingalls Wilder RV Park shared, "Cheryl was fantastic, was fine with us checking in late and left us an extra hose and power cord in case ours did not reach. The sites are a little close together and you are on a hill, but we had no problem in our 31' class A. Gravel pads made leveling easy."
