    Knob Noster State Park Campground

    Cute, Small Quiet

We camped the last weekend in September picking a late reservation where kayaks were available for our first tent test run were our main goals, which the site met. Kayaking was wildly available, due to the small lake and difficult launch, we can see why, but still very enjoyable. Site was very sizable for our tent, as most are suitable for campers. Lots of even ground, with decent distance. Facilities could do with some updates, but there were a number of bathrooms on site, spaced so no site seemed far, including the vault toilet and a lot of people masking up while going into bathrooms as well, which was appreciated. Current host was super nice and helpful to first timers. The tiny market has a number of random items, including a collapsible fork which was the only thing we hadn't overpacked, and wasn't overpriced. Fire pits on our site were adjustable, making grilling food easier to control.

    Beautiful lake views

Stayed on the A loop and had a beautiful view of the lake! Nice to be close to bathrooms and have a gorgeous view. Friendly staff, great price, and campsites have a fire pit with a grill, and a picnic table. We’ll be back!

    Well maintained campground

Well maintained campground with nice, level concrete pads. Sites are spacious. Bath houses (there are at least 2) have 4 unisex shower pods that are clean and have good pressure. There are no sinks or mirrors, just shower and bench. I did not go into bathroom, which was a separate building. The only reason I took off a star is because my site (13) was adjacent to a fenced off sewer lagoon which did emit slight odor. If I came again I would choose another site.

    Trailside RV Park

    Decent

Good: New management seems friendly and helpful. Laundry facilities acceptable. ($1.25 to wash)
Propane fill on site. Pool and restrooms closed during my stay, appear nice enough.

Bad: Noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic. Situated between two neighborhoods, the highway, and an RV dealership. Did I mention noise? WiFi is laughable.

    Phone/internet service is low average.

Overall, adequate. Nothing too bad (except the noise), and nothing to rave about.

    Great Overnight Campsite

Stayed here for one night after driving down from Nebraska. Great place to set up for the night, clean bathrooms, a nice fire pit, and plenty of room to set up a tarp for the rain. Not too much privacy as there’s not very many trees around and the sites are close together but otherwise a great campground!

    Great Camping

Stayed here for three nights. All spots have plenty of shade when we walked around. Shower house and bathrooms were clean and nice. Lots of things to do such as boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and swimming. Fire pits were even nice with an attached grill grate.

    Great get away

Camp ground was very clean and the staff is very helpful! Drive you right to the campsite so no need to have to look for it. Pizza delivery a d wood was a nice touch. Laundry room was nice and easy to use. Everything is very close in the campground. Close to downtown

    Nicely shaded spots.

We stayed for two days in spot #92. Many of the spots have a good amount of room, but there are some that looked tricky to level. 92 was fine for leveling. The only downside is that the spots, while larger, are fairly open (in the area around 92). I prefer a spot that has a tucked away fire pit and table, but this worked OK for us. Bathhouses were clean and there is a great 3.75 mile paved loop around the lake if you have dogs that enjoy long walks.

    Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park

    Quick Questival Camp

We are camping here while doing the Cotopaxi Questival Adventure Race. It's a very nice setting in a Grove of trees atop a hill. Both electric and primitive sites are available. The bathrooms are the nicest campground bathrooms I've ever used - large, clean, and not communal, so you get a sink, toilet, and shower all to yourself. This campground is in close proximity to the lake, trails, and many other outdoorsy diversions!

Guide to Lake Winnebago

Lake Winnebago, Missouri offers camping and glamping options within 30-40 miles of Kansas City, with sites situated near several lakes and waterways. The area maintains moderate temperatures through spring and fall, though summer humidity can make tent camping challenging without proper ventilation. Most campgrounds in the region remain open from March through October, with limited winter availability at select locations.

What to do

Biking the trails: Smiths Fork Recreation Area features a network of riding trails throughout the park with lake access points. "There is a really nice walking/riding trail that goes all through the park! This is a family favorite!" notes Steven N., who appreciated the well-maintained pathways.

Fishing opportunities: The multiple lakes near Lake Winnebago provide excellent fishing conditions, particularly at Crow's Creek Campground. A camper observed, "We had a short walk to the lake for fishing, and the loop had a restroom. We were able to enter the swim beach without having to pay extra," highlighting the convenience for anglers.

Practice archery: Glamping near Lake Winnebago, Missouri puts you close to unique outdoor activities like the bow range at nearby parks. "It also has a great bow range for siting in and practicing with your bow. You can even climb towers to practice shooting from 'tree-stand' elevations," mentions Jason W. about facilities within 30 miles of Lake Winnebago.

What campers like

Private bathroom facilities: Campgrounds in this region often feature individual bathroom units rather than communal facilities. According to Anita M. at Watkins Mill State Park Campground, "Clean facilities include plenty of stalls and sinks, separate showers and laundry. Well lit and accessible."

Lake views from campsites: Many sites provide direct sightlines to the water, especially valued by campers seeking luxury glamping experiences. "One site has a view of Lake Jacomo and is somewhat level (#31 I think?) and is hard to reserve on short notice," notes Susan J., highlighting the premium nature of waterfront locations.

Historical attractions: The region surrounding Lake Winnebago combines camping with educational opportunities. Josh P. shares about Weston Bend State Park Campground: "If you like history, take a tour of the woolen mill part. Very cool," referring to nearby historical structures not commonly found at typical glamping sites.

What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the Lake Winnebago area require preparation for uneven terrain. A visitor to Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park reported: "One of the 3 Jackson County campgrounds, but the most in level sites in any of the parks... had to use lots of wood to level everything up, including extending one of our jacks to the maximum and causing it to throw an error message."

Seasonal wildlife concerns: Raccoons become more active in warmer months at glamping sites near Lake Winnebago. One camper at Knob Noster State Park described: "We did have a problem with Raccoons, but with our site being on the very edge of the sites I think that may be inevitable."

Noise considerations: For glampers seeking quiet, location selection matters. Kris M. notes: "Noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic. Situated between two neighborhoods, the highway, and an RV dealership. Did I mention noise?"

Tips for camping with families

Look for playgrounds: Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA provides child-focused amenities that complement luxury camping experiences. Ashley S. mentions, "Our friends stayed in the cabins which are awesome... Very little green space but had a lot of amenities and the cleanest bathrooms!"

Consider paved pathways: Some campgrounds feature smooth surfaces ideal for children's bikes and scooters. Julie B. appreciates that "Trails and roads within the campsite are paved, so it's great for bikes and scooters. Grounds are well maintained and grassy areas feel fine to walk through and play in."

Check for seasonal activities: Campgrounds often coordinate special events for families during peak months. One camper praised the efforts of staff members: "Been here several times and they are more than accommodating. Always a clean, safe and organized campground. Can't wait until next year to see all of the events!"

Tips from RVers

Site spacing varies: Knob Noster State Park Campground receives high marks for its layout. John J. explains, "The campground honored our disability rating and gave us a discount - $22.00 for 3 days & 2 nights. If you require electrical hookups, it is getting to be more common to plan ahead and submit a reservation."

Full hookup availability: For RVers seeking luxury glamping with all amenities, options exist but require planning. Robin R. notes, "This is full hook up. They have both 30 and 50 amp. Close to 169 hwy. Perfect for families with young children. Smaller park, very friendly hosts."

Reservation strategies: Holiday periods and summer weekends book quickly for premium glamping sites with RV hookups. "We camped in our 39' diesel pusher... Sites run from 20/30/50 amp, some with FHU's. One site has a view of Lake Jacomo and is somewhat level and is hard to reserve on short notice."
