Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Nice military campground on the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area (LORA) is a great destination for camping, boating, swimming, water skiing, fishing and other outdoor activities. The lake is one of the Nation's largest man-made lakes, providing you with over 1150 miles of shoreline to enjoy. LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD employees with ID cards, family members and Fort Leonard Wood contract employees.  Plenty to do and see here.  Boat rentals, hiking, and others mentioned above.  The LORA Country Store carries ice, beverages, firewood and a small selection of food including snacks, milk, eggs and bread. The store also carries the basic necessities needed for camping and fishing, including fishing licenses.  Can rent a tent site, camper site with full or partial hook ups, cabins 1-3 bedroom, etc.  The marina has boat and jet-ski rentals (pontoons, wave runners, jet ski's, ski boats, fishing boats, pontoons, etc.) that are much more reasonable then other rental places in the area. Area is staffed by on-duty MP's out of Fort Leonard Wood.

Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Very quiet, very pretty, several issues.

Asked for a lake view cabin. We were the only ones here since it was a weekday after labor day so all cabins were open. I go to check in and it's a long sidewalk between narrow rails. Not at all easy if you are disabled and with my COPD, I had to stop several times.

I get cabin 6. If you go here DO NOT GET CABIN 6. It's the only one you can't park in front of as it's down the side of a hill. You must traverse several levels of steps down a steep grade. The office hours are over by now so I hauled what we needed down.

The lake view was somewhere past the forest so I'll take their word on that.

The refrigerator was filthy and we had no hot water. Since it was after hours all we could do is clean the fridge, make supper and wait till 9 in the morning to call maintenance.

Maintenance arrives and determine the elements are bad. At about 10:30am they started working. Spent most of our only full day watching them fix the water heater. The maintenance guys were very nice but I'm not leaving my stuff with strangers.

So basically, I spent $200 to sit on a deck with acorns falling on us or on the world's most uncomfortable couch as they worked on getting me hot water. Early morning fishing was shot.

They did say we could now switch cabins but I would need to move our stuff back up Mt Fk-That just to move it again into the new cabin, then back out again tomorrow.

It is a lovely area and the people are friendly but they need to do better. Also, warn people that cabin 6 is more cliff side than lake side.

    Camp Takimina

Beautiful quiet campground in Columbia MO!

We stayed at Camp Takimina on our first shakedown trip with our Popup camper.  It was amazing.  It was about 5-10 minutes from I-70, super easy to get to. The camp was quiet, private, and peaceful.  There are no hookups, but water was right next to us near the parking lot, and the picnic tables near the lodge were shaded most of the day.  Portapotties were clean and well stocked.  We brought our dog and two children and the had an absolutely fabulous time!  We hiked a lot in the woods, played in the creek, and had plenty of time and space to figure out our new to us popup camper.  There aren't actual spots for to park in, it is just a big gravel lot with a couple designated areas for campers if the lot is full (it wasn't full at all).  We reserved Arrow Hill also, which is a huge site right next to the parking lot, so we had a campfire ring to cook on.  Most of the firepits have benches that surround them, which was very handy not to have to move chairs around all the time.  The tent sites were huge- easily would fit multiple tents at each site, and we will absolutely be back to tent camp, and with the popup too!

    Happy Acres

Stayed 2 of 3 reserved nights.

PLEASE NOTE THIS REVIEW IS FOR "RV" PARK ONLY. WE DID NOT USE THE EVENT CENTER AND BED & BREAKFAST. We pushed ourselves to stay 2 of our scheduled 3 nights. This is a trailer park with RVs. All hands off for reservations and parking. Stopped in at the office and they could have cared less. Parked us next to someone that yelled at everyone she was on the phone with and although dog had a leash on was loose. We like dogs but this one was not too interested in being friendly. Maybe construction at entrance is complete now but was a mess when we were there. Wifi stunk. So this 1 star is a 0 star.....first one I have ever given.

    Cross Creek RV Park

    Great vacation

Great experience. Access to camping ground was little difficult. It was gravel road but it was very steep hill (very common in this area). Campground had private lake with boat rentals, mini golf pool. Our site was maybe 30 yards from the water.

    Linn Creek Koa

    Not my favorite

The campsite had fine amenities that I would expect from a KOA: decent bathrooms, playground, basic pool. What I didn’t like was the gravel roads around the campsite were very washed out from rain, unlevel, and I was nervous we’d bust up the camper pulling it. Our specific site didn’t have a picnic table, it was very small, and had no shade. We were in spot #26.

It was overall ok. Quiet. I think I’ll try another campsite in the area next time.

Guide to California

Cabin camping options near California, Missouri provide convenient access to lakes, hiking trails, and family activities. The Missouri Ozarks region typically receives 43 inches of precipitation annually, creating lush forested areas and ample water recreation. Elevation changes around California range from 700-900 feet above sea level, creating varied terrain for both lakeside and wooded cabin sites.

What to do

Fishing from private islands: Cross Creek RV Park offers unique camping experiences on their 8-acre private lake. "We tent camped on the island for 2 nights. It was awesome, you can fish right off the bank of your own private island within in minutes of waking up. Not as secluded as the other survivor tent site but really fantastic place. Had a restroom on the island, big plus for a family with 5 little ones," writes Barrett C. about Cross Creek RV Park.

Boat rentals at multiple price points: Military Park Fort Leonard Wood offers affordable options compared to commercial rentals. "You can launch your own kayak or rent a motor boat to explore this gigantic lake. Free laundry facilities. Lean restrooms with nice shower," notes Kate B. about Military Park Fort Leonard Wood Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area.

Explore 160 acres of natural areas: Cedar Creek Resort & RV Park provides extensive grounds for day hiking. "Oh my as we drove in this place was amazing. There were fishing ponds a retreat center and cabins. Hiking trails, RV park w laundry. Over 160 acres of land to explore on!!!" shares Kathy F.

What campers like

Pontoon boat access included with some cabins: Cedar Creek Resort offers unexpected amenities with cabin stays. "The cabins are spectacular and right on the water! We just took 40+ family members and everyone fell in love with this campground. Free rentals on pontoon boats, kayaks, and paddle boats," reports Jason R. about Cedar Creek Resort & RV Park.

Budget-friendly food options: Some resorts offer affordable dining compared to other lake establishments. "With no cover charge for live music and some of the lowest food and drink prices on the lake, it's a great place to relax and enjoy the waterfront views," explains Myranda H. about Deer Valley Campground.

Quiet, secluded tent camping spots: Camp Takimina provides peaceful alternatives to busier lakeside resorts. "The camp was quiet, private, and peaceful. There are no hookups, but water was right next to us near the parking lot, and the picnic tables near the lodge were shaded most of the day. Portapotties were clean and well stocked," explains Kari W.

What you should know

Multiple cabin accessibility challenges: Some lakeside cabins require navigating significant elevation changes. "Asked for a lake view cabin. It's the only one you can't park in front of as it's down the side of a hill. You must traverse several levels of steps down a steep grade," cautions Aaron R. about the Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area.

Group housing options for trail users: The Turner Katy Trail Shelter offers bunk-style accommodations at low rates. "The shelter is open for individuals and groups, including youth groups, using the trail. The shelter is two stories with 40 bunk style beds. Guests must bring their own bedding. The cost is $6 per night per person. For groups of 10 or more the cost is $25 plus $2 for each member," explains Joyce R. about Turner Katy Trail Shelter.

Gravel road access can be challenging: Several cabin sites require navigating unpaved roads. "Access to camping ground was little difficult. It was gravel road but it was very steep hill (very common in this area)," notes Martin J. about Cross Creek RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Consider sites with dedicated family areas: Little Niangua Campground separates camping areas by atmosphere. "There are spots for campers or tents and they also have cabins. They have a party side and a family side. Bath houses are also available," explains Brandy C. about Little Niangua Campground.

Look for campgrounds with recreational amenities: Multiple options include additional attractions beyond cabin facilities. "Campground sits on 70 acres and includes an 8 acre stocked lake. Boat rental, paddle boats, miniature golf, shuffleboard, volleyball, playground, hiking and a general store," suggests Sherry D.

Check cabin sleeping capacity carefully: Some California, Missouri area cabins advertise 3+ bedrooms but have limited space. "It's my favorite place to stay at the lake of the ozarks! Kids love the mini golf, shuffleboard, and basketball. Huge private lake great for fishing and watching duck families swim by and come up to you on the grass!" shares Keidra P.

Tips from RVers

Consider seasonal timing for cabin rentals: Some facilities become very busy during peak months. "We are here in the middle of October waiting for the leaves to turn. Good access to the Lake of the Ozarks," notes Teri H. about Linn Creek KOA.

Check bathroom proximity to cabins: Facilities vary widely between properties. "Bathhouses are pretty new and adequate but a pretty long walk from the transit sites. I don't think the baths are cleaned daily," reports George L. about Cedar Creek Resort.

Road noise impacts some cabin locations: Highway proximity affects some camping cabins near California, Missouri. "Lynn Creek KOA is a mediocre resort. The pool and the bathroom facilities are pros, and the sites have trees for added shade. But the noise from the freeway running in front of the resort is unbearable at all hours," warns Human B.
