      Clear Springs Recreation Area

A great little campground for RVs or tents

Clear Springs Recreation Area, located in the Homochitto National Forest near Roxie, Ms, is probably one of my favorite campgrounds within 3 hours from New Orleans. It's located in a beautiful section of the forest, complete with rolling hills and a lake.

The primitive tent only sites are located about half a mile up the road from the main campground, providing a substantial distance between you and the RVs. The dirt road to the tent only sites is lined with individual camp sites until you reach the back area. The back has a few small hilltops that have about 4 sites per hill. Each hill is about 50 yards from each other, again, providing needed space between you and other campers. All of the sites have fire pits with fold down cast iron grills. The ground was level enough for tents, and there's a good amount of trees for hammock camping.

The RV spots are located near the lake(pond), and have picnic tables and the fire pit. Some of the RV sites are more open air and without much privacy, yet some are nestled amongst the trees on the outer perimeter.

Adjacent to the RV sites are the restrooms, equipped with showers. On a very cold and frozen winter morning, I had decided to visit the facilities. To my great surprise, when I opened the door, I was hit with blast of warm air! So you can rest easy knowing that the restrooms are heated. There is a large pavilion that is open to air on three sides. the open sides have a railing with bench seats. There are also picnic tables located within. Most interesting was the oversized stone fireplace. It looks most welcoming, although I had no chance to use it.next to the pavilion is an open picnic area with charcoal grills and more tables. All of these picnic areas overlook the pond.

I understand that there is 17 miles of hiking trails surrounding the area. It looks like a large circuit with shorter trails interconnecting by the map.

I haven't experienced this campground outside of dead winter. I enjoyed the subfreezing temps next to a hot fire. I have been four times in the last couple of years, twice solo and twice with guests. I very much love this campground.

      Tunica Hills Campground

      Mostly peaceful

You have to carry your stuff to your camp site as people have already said. Ownership is nice and helpful. You can buy a small bundle of wood for $5. Stayed in the little A frame cabin. Port-o-potties are clean and there is a shower and a sink. I also had good service the whole time(verizon.)

      So peaceful

Don’t let the condition of the road or the buildings scare you away from this state park. These people have had to clean up after 2 hurricanes this year. All sites in campground B are level concrete, water and electric. State park grills, picnic tables and sunken fire pits all for just 20.00 per night. 20 minutes from downtown Natchez. Great spot.

      Tunica Hills Campground

      Beautiful and unique

Loved this small quiet camp ground. It is basically hike-in, although the host is great enough to offer to haul your stuff with her 4WD atv cart. The common areas are a surprising bonus. Shower was lukewarm but portopotties are spotless. Dishwashing station and outdoor kitchen are icing on cake.

We stayed at the site “Wilson” which was incredible. If you don’t want / need electricity site #10 is tops.

Bob M. Dearing Natchez State Park Campground

      Solid park

My husband and I tent camped in Natchez state park February 2019. We were the only people in the park best we could tell. The bathrooms were great (always important to me),very clean, hot running water, all the essentials. The campsite was nice, no firepit, but we were able to make a fire. It was rainy when we were there, so we spent time outside the park. There are almost no hiking trails in the park, there is a nice lake, but no rental ability that we could find. They do allow hunting in the park, so you must be careful.

      Clear Springs Recreation Area

      Nice family campground

$20, $13 with fed pass. 22 sites. Electric & water hookups. Dump station. Two campground loops - B: Sites 1-12, & A: Sites 13-22. Loop A is prettier that Loop B, but Loop B has more level sites which may be more suitable for larger campers. Camped at site 7 in a camper van. Large site backed against the woods with access to a hiking trail. Not much privacy between sites. Nice family campground. Sites have table, lantern post & fire ring. Picnic Area also in this rec area. Beautiful setting by the lake. Restroom/shower house needs some work. Mens shower stalls have standing water in them - possible drainage issue. Women's toilet stalls also have a similar issue due to a leaky toilet. Bugs were not too bad here in April. No AT&T & T-Mobile service at our campsite, but picked up a weak signal by the lake.

      Clear Springs Recreation Area

      Great camping location

Spent the weekend camping at one of the improved sites with water on site. Site had picnic table, fire pit, and plenty of room for tents and your camp set-up. Our site had a great view of the creek and was a little more tucked away but right by the bathrooms. Trails are throughout the area, couple of fishing spots, lots of picnic areas with grills and a playground. The place was not very crowded and the US Forest Service ranger (Virginia) was very kind and helpful. We hiked some of Richardson Creek Trail, but decided to turn around because it was overgrown at points and we found ticks on our dog. Otherwise, it was a beautiful walk through the woods. Several large banana spiders set up along the way so keep an eye out! Also, the county is supposed to be under a fire burn until the end of October.

    Guide to Woodville

Cabin camping near Woodville, Mississippi offers visitors access to diverse terrain that includes steep ravines, hardwood forests and clear running streams atypical for Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The Tunica Hills region rises up to 200 feet above sea level, creating a microclimate with plants and wildlife not found in surrounding lowlands. Winter temperatures typically range from 30-65°F, while summer months can reach 90°F with high humidity.

    What to do

Explore unique trails: Clear Springs Recreation Area features 17 miles of hiking paths through rolling forest terrain. A visitor noted, "Lots of trails and a large pond to fish and swim. Picnic areas and well maintained banks." The area's elevation changes make hiking more challenging than typically found in southern Mississippi.

Visit nearby waterfalls: Take a 10-minute drive from Tunica Hills Campground to experience seasonal waterfalls in the wildlife management area. "Clark's Creek is nearby for superb hiking," mentions one reviewer, referring to the popular creek system with small cascades after rainfall.

Fishing opportunities: Percy Quin State Park — Percy Quinn State Park offers shoreline and boat fishing on Lake Tangipahoa. The park provides "a boat launch, marina and a fish cleaning area" according to a visitor. For cabin campers who bring boats, some sites allow direct water access as one camper explains: "We brought our kayaks and were able to dock at our campsite."

    What campers like

Unique terrain: Many visitors appreciate the unusual geography not typically associated with the region. A camper at Tunica Hills Campground was surprised by the landscape: "Nice campsite...a lot of hiking trails nearby for all different skill levels...the terrain is amazing couldn't believe I was actually in Louisiana."

Evening atmosphere: The remote setting creates a distinctive night environment. "The campground is very secluded, so you get to experience the sounds of the woods at night," mentions one Tunica Hills visitor, highlighting the natural darkness and quiet that cabin campers often seek.

Diverse accommodation styles: River View RV Park & Resort offers cabin options with Mississippi River views. "We spent a few days at River View RV Park in January, visiting Natchez and enjoying the view of the Mississippi River. The sites were pretty spacious and many have an unobstructed view of the river. There is even a nice paved trail on top of the levee."

    What you should know

Reservation systems vary: While Percy Quin State Park cabins can be reserved online, other facilities require direct contact. For Tunica Hills Campground, "This campground is NOT accessible by GPS, and visitors must follow the online directions... Call to reserve," explains one visitor.

Prepare for limited supplies: Pack all essential items before arrival, especially at more remote locations. "It's a peaceful place to camp. Just make sure you bring all your supplies you think you might need because there isn't any store for miles," warns a Tunica Hills camper.

Seasonal considerations: Spring and fall offer more moderate temperatures for cabin camping. One visitor to Percy Quin State Park noted, "I think the best time to visit is in the spring," when wildflowers bloom and before summer humidity sets in.

    Tips for camping with families

Safe swimming options: Clear Springs Recreation Area has designated swimming areas appropriate for children. A reviewer mentioned the lake has "one side shallow and sandy for smaller swimmers, one side deeper," making it suitable for families with children of different ages.

Playground access: Percy Quin offers multiple recreational facilities for children. "The park is a mixture of older and newer buildings. All appear to be well maintained and clean... The park offers a boat launch, marina and a fish cleaning area," notes a visitor regarding the facilities.

Kid-friendly cabin selection: When booking cabin accommodations, consider proximity to facilities. At Tunica Hills, one family shared, "We were right next to the bathroom, sink, and shower," which made their stay with small children more convenient. They added, "There are areas for the kids to play in the woods some of the areas are steep and they needed supervision (5&6 year old)."

    Tips from RVers

Cabin alternatives: Paragon Casino Resort offers both RV sites and cabin rentals with full amenities. "They also have little cabins and chalets for rent at the back of the campground," notes a visitor, providing options for travelers without RVs who still want cabin-style accommodations.

Accessibility considerations: Not all cabin sites accommodate large vehicles. A visitor to Clear Springs observed, "It has 2 separate areas, both have electric and water at the sites... Smaller RVs and tents only. Dump site at the entrance." Travelers with larger vehicles should call ahead for specific access information.
