Clear Springs Recreation Area offers two fishing areas—a deeper section for experienced anglers and a shallow sandy area suitable for children. The recreation area contains 17 miles of interconnected trails through the Homochitto National Forest with varying difficulty levels. Camping options span two separate loops, each with water and electric hookups for $20 per night or $13 with federal passes. Cell coverage remains limited with AT&T and T-Mobile users experiencing weak signals except near the lake.
What to do
Trail exploration with kids: Richardson Creek Trail requires caution due to potential ticks, especially with children. "We hiked some of Richardson Creek Trail, but decided to turn around because it was overgrown at points and we found ticks on our dog. Otherwise, it was a beautiful walk through the woods," notes Jeri W. from Clear Springs Recreation Area.
Water activities: Lake Bruin State Park provides excellent swimming and boating opportunities. "Stunning Views in a Serene Setting. If you want to swim and you love cypress trees, this is your spot. The spots along the water are all amazing but 4 & 5 are extra great because they have shade all day and decks," according to DENISE G. from Lake Bruin State Park Campground.
Hiking and biking: The trails at Clear Springs provide varied terrain for different skill levels. As one visitor to Tunica Hills Campground noted, "Nice campsite..we had the area to ourselves..alot of hiking trails nearby for all different skill levels..the terrain is amazing couldn't believe I was actually in Louisiana."
What campers like
Secluded camping spots: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Roxie offer secluded sites with natural privacy. "Select your campsite then pay your fee. We arrived Sunday morning in February and only two other campers were here. The sights are flat, well groomed, with access to the pond and trail around the pond," explains Team D. from Homochitto National Forest Clear Springs.
Fishing access: Multiple lakes around Roxie provide excellent fishing opportunities. "There is a great lake that you can swim in. They were working on the trails so there were only a couple different options but there was 1 or 2 longer hikes that we completed," according to Ethan K.
Lake views: Waterfront sites are popular among campers seeking pet-friendly camping opportunities. "We brought our kayaks and were able to dock at our campsite. We had a lot of fun playing in the lake. The kids also did some fishing," says Jason R. from Percy Quin State Park Campground.
What you should know
Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds may be challenging. "The road was a little rough on the way in but not too bad," explains Kelly E. about Natchez State Park.
Limited cell service: Most campgrounds in the area have minimal reception. "Verizon had no service and AT&T 2 bars," reports Tiffany M. about Percy Quin State Park.
Bathhouse conditions vary: Facility quality differs between campgrounds. "The bathhouse is dated but clean and warm. Although the gaps between the shower stalls leave little privacy in my opinion," notes Kim T. from Natchez State Park Campground.
Weather preparation: The region experiences significant rainfall patterns. "Our trip was clouded by the rain...pun intended. As is typical for the Gulf Coast South... it rained and rained and rained."
Tips for camping with families
Campsite selection: For families with younger children, certain loops offer better accessibility. "If you are with kids and/or in a tent then sites 1-12 are perfect," advises Team D.
Playground access: Several parks feature play areas for children. "Nice campground with decent showers and bathrooms. Electric and water at every site. Nice playground by the lake."
Water safety: Swimming areas vary in depth and safety features. "The park is staffed with friendly staff and was very clean. Great access to the lake from most of the camp sites," reports Dee D. about Lake Lincoln State Park Campground.
Wildlife education: Prepare children for potential wildlife encounters. "Don't be surprised in the evening to found you have visitors such as raccoons or possums...they are looking for treats."
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Many campgrounds have limitations on RV size. "Not a lot of room for large RV's so check with them. Water and electric available as well as a dump station," advises Doug D.
Hookup availability: Most pet-friendly camping areas near Roxie offer electric and water. "Water and electricity at my site was 40 psi no issues," reports Rod A.
Leveling requirements: Site terrain varies considerably across the region. "Be careful selecting your site, some are uneven and the pad sets above ground level. Sites all have a grill and fire pit."
