    Eagle Point Primitive Campground

Good views, launch and 2 swimming areas

Part of the day use area has been converted into a campground in 2018. There are eight campsites, each with a level gravel pad tent area, picnic table and grill. There is group fire pit area, with a picnic table. Unfortunately, the only place to have a fire at your campsite is in the grill. None of the sites have electricity. There is a central water spigot. The restroom has flush toilets, but no showers. You can go to one of the other many Corps of Engineers campgrounds nearby to shower. Both times we have stayed here, we were the only ones there. It's so new, almost no one knows of its existence. To either side of it, there is a swimming area in the day use area and at the boat launch / swimming beach. All sites have a water view.

    Eagle Point Primitive Campground

    A Scenic Stay

The campground is located in a beautiful spot on a peninsula with great views of Grenada lake at both sunrise and sunset. The tent pads are nice and each camp has a grill and a nice marble picnic table. Several camps have fire pits, trash cans, and water faucets. There is a nice public restroom just a short walk from any camp. The sounds of the water crashing on the shores around you and the birds singing at sunrise are utterly calming. The only problem is the occasional truck that passes through to sit listening to music or use the campground road as a turn around. This could be fixed if the gate at the entrance were kept closed and only opened for actual campers.

    Super quiet

Super quiet, not equipped for many activities. Some covered picnic tables interspersed. Outdoor cooking allowed unless there is a fire ban. One small commercial washer and two dryers available. Water and electric 50 amp at each site. Dump station. Showers and rest rooms are nice. Great overnight for travelers and good price, $25. Propane available. Ok stay if visiting casino.

John W Kyle State Park — John W. Kyle State Park

    Awful

It’s really hard for me to give 1 star for anything, but this place is a dump. This is the 3rd MS State Park (North MS) we have been to and it is clear that MS does not take care of its state parks. Only half of the park is open, the grass was overgrown, trash/garbage is littered every where (especially near the open dumpsters that are randomly placed throughout camp), the ranger only came around to collect fees and then disappeared. The bathroom does not have AC or a fan, so it was a total sweat box. The toilet paper was not replenished, there is no hand soap, there was broken glass on the ground in one of the stalls. The shower portion wasn’t that bad, but again, no AC. The water hook ups are at least 100 foot away from most camp sites, so bring lots of extra hose if you do end up staying here. The site #’s are not clearly marked and they do not post if a site is reserved. No designated fire pits, so people have been just burning where ever they want. The fee is $22 a night, but they will charge you another $16 if you put up a tent. Overall, I paid $39 to stay in the worst campground we have ever gone to. Get it together Mississippi!

George P. Cossar State Park Campground

    Nice older campground

This is a nice older campground with full hookups including sewer, which makes it nice. Not far from I-55 if you needed some place to stop for the night. Restrooms/Shower house was clean and nice. Washer and dryers available, but somewhat unkept. Putt putt golf course and disc golf on premises. Noticed some grills were broken and fire pits were not on all sites. Definitely, stay only in Yocona Ridge as the other section is in complete disrepair. MS really needs to fund their state parks better so they can get the maintenance needed. They will begin charging $10 a day extra for golf carts beginning May 1, 2021. Lakeside sites would allow for boat pull-up within view.

    Wall Doxey State Park Campground

    Abounds in charm and hospitality

My stay won't likely be like yours. First, I drove in while Mississippi was under a blanket of snow. All the roads in Holly Springs and the rest of the state were treacherous with packed snow and ice following a week of unseasonably frigid weather across the southern midwest.

That said, the 2 rangers working at Wall Doxey went out of their way to set me up with a parking place in the practically empty campground, putting me in the youth camp, finding me an extension cord to hook up to power and allowing me access to the group camp for a bathroom and shower.

This was necessary because many areas were either in the middle of renovation, inaccessible or out of service due to frozen pipes. To say these ladies went out of their way to get me situated is an understatement. They were heroines!

The camp has loads of retro charm. A big mid-century lodge, picnic area, swimming lake, frisbee golf and a 2 mile hiking trail around the lake. I enjoyed a walk thru the snow and the comfort of having a safe and caring place to stay during my trip through Mississippi.

I suspect it will be the same for you even if your visit is under far different circumstances.

    This is a must visit

This place was absolutely gorgeous. I was alone in the campground both nights i was there with a couple of people coming in during the day to have lunch at one of the picnic tables.

I might have worked on my tanlines 🤫

I fit pretty good in my 24' motorhome but woupd be leery of something too much bigger.

Do not try to come at night. It is pitch black and steep drop offs.

Really nice set up for tents if thwt is your thing.

What to do

Disc golf courses: Wall Doxey State Park Campground features a course that winds through pine forests, though visitors should be prepared for ticks during warmer months. "The highlight for us is the disc golf course the winds through the pine forest," notes one camper, adding a practical warning about checking for ticks after playing.

Fishing opportunities: Eagle Point Primitive Campground offers excellent lake access with scenic views. "The campground is located in a beautiful spot on a peninsula with great views of Grenada lake at both sunrise and sunset," writes one visitor who enjoyed the waterfront setting. Sites are situated to maximize water views from multiple angles.

Mini-golf activities: George P. Cossar State Park Campground has a simple mini-golf course near the main playground. "Bathrooms/showers were very spacious and clean. Yokona ridge has a great playground for kids with the putt-putt golf course a short walk away. 4$+tax per person to play," explains a reviewer who appreciated the affordable recreation options.

What campers like

Clean bathhouse facilities: John W Kyle State Park offers updated bathroom facilities at some locations. A reviewer noted, "The shower portion wasn't that bad," which indicates basic but functional showering options. The northern section appears less maintained than other areas, so site selection matters.

Affordable pricing: Hollywood Casino RV Park provides budget-friendly cabin accommodations at approximately $25 per night. "Reserved for 3 nights and we ended up staying 7 and we don't even gamble, but after traveling for a couple months it was nice to relax for a bit without breaking the bank," shared one visitor who extended their stay due to the value.

Peaceful settings: Hugh White State Park Campground offers waterfront sites with natural buffers. "The sites are nice and grassy, and a lot of the sites have privacy bushes and things of that nature," reports a camper who enjoyed the scenery and quiet atmosphere.

What you should know

Maintenance varies significantly: Campground upkeep changes seasonally and between different sections of the same park. At George P. Cossar State Park, "We did drive through the other loop (it was empty and closed at the time, the ranger let us look at it) and it appears to be much older than Yocona Ridge. There were trees/limbs down everywhere and the sites were pretty close to each other."

Water hookups may require extra equipment: At John W Kyle State Park, "The water hook ups are at least 100 foot away from most camp sites, so bring lots of extra hose if you do end up staying here." Another camper confirmed this challenge: "We did have to buy an extra hose to reach water hookup but other than that, it was good."

Reservation systems vary: Some parks require advance booking while others use honor boxes or on-site registration. At Eagle Point Primitive Campground, "The primitive sites are $10/night in the honor box. There are bathrooms with showers about 50 yards from the site."

Tips for camping with families

Halloween events: Wall Doxey State Park hosts popular Halloween activities with decorated campsites. "Every camp site had wonderful decorations and the kids had such a blast. It was awesome. And the rest of the year it is a quiet getaway," shares an enthusiastic visitor about this special event.

Playground options: Playgrounds vary significantly in quality and maintenance. At George P. Cossar State Park, families can find "a new pavilion, nice playground and a bare bones mini golf that would probably entertain very young children."

Swimming considerations: Swimming areas aren't available at all parks. One camper at Eagle Point noted, "Good beach in the summer," but others mentioned restrictions. Another observed, "To either side of it, there is a swimming area in the day use area and at the boat launch / swimming beach."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Many campgrounds feature concrete pads, but they require attention. At Wall Doxey State Park Campground, "Concrete pads for your camper rig but watch your step. Lots of erosion around the edges."

Big rig access: Several parks accommodate larger vehicles, but tree placement can impact accessibility. "We fit pretty good in my 24' motorhome but would be leery of something too much bigger," advised an Eagle Point Primitive Campground visitor.

Arrival timing: Daytime arrival is strongly recommended due to limited lighting and navigation challenges. "Do not try to come at night. It is pitch black and steep drop offs," warns a visitor to Eagle Point Primitive Campground who experienced nighttime navigation difficulties.
