    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Big Foot Horse Trail and Camp offers free primitive camping with toilets for equestrians in the De Soto National Forest near Picayune, Mississippi. The campground accommodates both tent and RV camping with drive-in access and ample space for horse trailers. While the site lacks drinking water, electric hookups, and horse corrals, it provides direct access to forest riding trails. Campers should bring their own water supply for themselves and their horses. The forested setting creates a natural backdrop for camping, though riders should watch where they step due to horse droppings throughout the campground areas.

The equestrian trails at Bogue Chitto State Park, located about 45 minutes from Picayune, provide additional riding opportunities in the region. This park features well-maintained horse trails through varied terrain with full-hookup campsites in the Uplands section. Many reviewers note the excellent trail maintenance and varied riding terrain through forests and along waterways. Riders can access multiple trail systems directly from the campground. Both locations remain popular with local horse owners who appreciate the combination of camping facilities and direct trail access. Neither location requires reservations for horse camping, though Bogue Chitto offers more amenities including showers and drinking water compared to the more primitive Big Foot experience.

      Land-O-Pines Family Campground

      Pleasant campground

Land-O-Pines is a nice private RV park near Folsom and Covington. We stayed two nights because my daughter was in a horse competition at a nearby horse farm. The sites are mostly shady. The streets and sites are gravel and can get a little muddy in spots after a rain. The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly. About half the sites are for permanent users.

Stayed in pull-through campsite C69 which was shady and level. It was a gravel site. There was enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck. Neighbors are nearby by not on top of you. The site included: picnic table on gravel, no fire ring. Utilities: 20/50A electric near the middle. The 20A receptacle looked like it had some minor burn marks. Water next to power pole, good pressure. Sewer near power pole with 4 non screw-on fitting.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon full bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 30.8 Mbps down, 3.6 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 4.5 Mbps down, 11.8 Mbps up. WiFi available, but did not use. Required a login.

Would stay here again. We camped at Land-O-Pines Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

      Nice Spot

This is a really pretty wide open dispersed camping area. Although it may get crowded. I am here on a cold day in the beginning of February and there are four other campers here. The campground is nice and quiet with the exception of nearby shooting. There also appears to be a ton of great trails for horses, walking, running etc. Pretty spot!

      DON'T FEED THE GATORS

Literally, don't feed the gators. There were signs everywhere. Apparently many people don't heed the signs. When my hubby rustled a bag, several alligators swam right up to our site! Our campsite #101 was right on one of the many lakes in the park. Not much room, but nice enough for looking at the alligators and fishing. No sewer hookup, but electric and water. Dump station was a short drive away. We were in the lower area campsites, which were prone to flash flooding. We actually left a day early due to prediction of rain. The bath house was a short walk away and very clean. Camp hosts actually drove around and checked on guests. There are wonderful hiking, biking, and horse trails. Canoeing and kayaking was a short drive away. Did I mention that there are free mini libraries??

      Flint Creek Waterpark

      Beautiful lake view

Second time at Flint Creek in Wiggins Mississippi. Stayed during the middle of January of 2021 on site 29.

The back of the site backs up to the lake, with plenty of beach to fish or hangout. This site would be perfect during the summer if you wanted to swim. The site had full hookups with 50amp connection. Plenty of space between sites. Also there are several shower/restrooms located throughout the Seneca Campground.

Only thing negative about the site was that it was not level. I had to add an extra step to get in and out of my travel trailer.

      Will definitely go back.

    Guide to Picayune

Equestrian camping near Picayune, Mississippi offers access to the DeSoto National Forest's extensive trail systems and pine forests. The region maintains a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers averaging 92°F in July. Trail conditions vary seasonally with spring bringing muddy sections while fall offers drier, more comfortable riding weather through the region's longleaf pine ecosystem.

    What to do

Trail riding through varied terrain: At Bogue Chitto State Park Campground, the extensive trail system accommodates riders of different experience levels. "Very clean, well kept state park. Hiking trails, equestrian trails, tubing, camping... they've got it all," notes James L. The park's trail network connects directly to camping areas.

Water activities for non-riding days: When taking a break from horseback riding, Flint Creek Waterpark offers swimming areas for cooling off. "The water park has a ton of slides and will keep kids young and old entertained sliding down the hill into the lake," explains J K. Multiple swimming areas provide options throughout the park.

Wildlife observation: During quieter trail rides, watch for native wildlife. "We saw plenty of wildlife such as turkey, deer, rabbits, turtles, alligators and birds," shares Tiffany M. about her Bogue Chitto visit. Early morning and dusk rides typically offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

    What campers like

Natural camping settings: Big Foot Horse Trail and Camp provides a rustic experience in a forest setting. "Campgrounds are beautiful with line forests surrounding the sites. Utilities are primitive but expected for a free campground," explains Sam O. The camp's natural setting creates an authentic outdoor experience.

Clean facilities despite rustic setting: Campers appreciate maintained facilities even at more primitive sites. At Land-O-Pines Family Campground, David B. notes, "The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly." Regular maintenance keeps camping areas comfortable despite heavy equestrian use.

Affordability for extended stays: Free camping options make multi-day trail riding trips more accessible. Big Foot Horse Trail provides no-cost camping with basic amenities, while other campgrounds offer reasonable rates for longer stays with more services.

    What you should know

Trail conditions vary seasonally: Spring often brings muddy trail sections while summer heat requires early morning or evening rides. Fall offers ideal riding conditions with cooler temperatures and drier trails.

Limited water availability: At primitive horse camps, water access can be restricted. "Watch where you step! Lots of horse poop," warns Sam O. about Big Foot Horse Trail. Riders should plan to bring sufficient water for themselves and their horses at sites without drinking water.

Campsite spacing considerations: At Creekside Farm Co., site layout provides privacy between campers. "This quiet campground is spacious. They limit the number of campers so this really does feel like primitive camping in the woods," mentions Alicia L. This spacing creates a more natural camping experience.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water features: For families with children, combining trail riding with swimming creates balanced activities. "Swimming, water slide to playing bingo and a lot more," says Farrah B. about the amenities at Land-O-Pines Family Campground.
