Jeff Busby Campground offers free, first-come, first-served camping for travelers with pets along the Natchez Trace Parkway near Kosciusko, Mississippi. The campground features paved pull-through sites that accommodate both tents and RVs, with flush toilets and water spigots available throughout the grounds. Sites include picnic tables, but campers report that spots sometimes overlap, requiring flexibility when the campground is busy. The camping area provides a quiet natural setting with clean facilities and trash receptacles. Campers note the campground remains peaceful at night and in the morning, making it ideal for pets that are easily disturbed.

Several pet-friendly camping options surround the Kosciusko area, with varying amenities for dog owners. Vaiden Campground provides electric and water hookups, fire rings, and a pavilion with activities that pet owners appreciate during longer stays. Most campgrounds in the region maintain basic pet policies requiring leashes and proper waste disposal, though specific rules may vary. During summer months, the humidity at waterfront campsites can intensify bug activity, requiring appropriate protection for both campers and their pets.

      Neshoba County Lake

      Questionable

Can anyone tell me about the primitive camping? My husband and children are planning a camping trip for this weekend over Mother’s Day, we are new to the neshoba county area. I see that fishing has great reviews, but what other amenities are there? Are pets allowed (on leash of course), kids friendly?

      Movietown RV Park

Nice size TV park w cabins

Thanks dyrt for pointing us here. For 30$ a night u get a level gravel drive thru spot electric, sewer, water, and wifi, laundry facilities and bath house very very clean. Very quiet all thru the day and night. Friendly people all round. 5 min to walmart, tractor supply, and many restaurants and gas stations. Spacious lots so you arent right up on each other. Theres rental lots and cabins by the night, week and month. Theres saved spaces for those who just want a pulling over night. Theres big rigs here and small ones. Vintage and brand new. These are friendly people you can sit a chair or 2 outside and not have someone pounding on your door at 7am yelling about a toy or a chair left out all night. This is our face in canton so far. Lovely place with country atmosphere. Pet friendly and spacious. All u need is right here. Thank you ms. Kay and staff.

      Sunset Marina and RV Park

      New facilities

On the shores of Ross Barnett Reservoir where Highway 43 crosses the lake. RV park is tucked behind the marina and boat store and not obvious. Paved roads and concrete slabs. This site is geared towards water sports, boating, fishing and duck hunting. Natchez Trace Parkway is nearby as is Brown’s Landing Park and Trail. Also Pearl River Wildlife Management Area is nearby. New sites are under construction. We were there during rains in January and having the RV on a concrete slab was a plus— the ground was quite soggy. Only problem is that some sewer hook-ups are 12” above ground creating a problem for dumping and drainage.

Jeff Busby Campground, Milepost 193.1 — Natchez Trace Parkway

      It was ok

This campground was just ok in my opinion. I went through it while traveling the Natchez Trace. It is one of only three campgrounds that can be found on the Trace. I did not end up staying here, but wanted to check it out to see if it was worth staying in the future. The bathrooms were very old and could have used an upgrade. There is a very nice nature trail here for walking and it is the highest point in Mississippi with wonderful views!

      Choctaw Lake

      Dump Station!

This is a great place to dump your tanks. Only one problem and we expect it to be resolved soon. The charge is $5.00 but there is no one to pay! The sign claims you can pay in the park, the dump is outside the park, at the entrance or exit. Afterwards we continued to “in the park” to pay with our 53’ rig with car in tow. We looked for a place to pay we gave up and had to try to turn around running over the curb with Motorhome and car we thought we should just mail the fee. A BOX AT THE DUMP STATION SEAM TO BE A SIMPLE FIX.

      A sparkling gem in mississippi!

What a gorgeous farm, and what a marvelous experience! When we first arrived, we thought we would have to hike down to camp. Nope! Brian met us at the gate, and led us down a perfectly manicured field so that we could park right next to our tent spot!

He showered us with provisions grown on his farm, including oodles of chanterelles and a couple bulbs of Creole Ajo Rojo from his passion project. We enjoyed a couple hours kayaking on the big pond/little lake with some ducks. We ended up getting caught in a surprise rain storm while floating, but no worries! We were able to make it back and throw up a tarp in no time. There are lots of primo spots to set up your tent, but ours fit perfectly between the two trees our tarp was strung between.

Brian really thought of everything when it comes to this camp! He provided us with covered firewood- including heat pine, which burned like a match and made building a fire after the rainstorm a breeze. We loved having enough chairs to set up both in front of the water and in front of the fire, so we didn't have to drag them back and forth.

Oh, what luxury it is to have a running toilet and a hot shower while camping! Both structures are incredibly solid and private, and made us feel human again after a couple weeks camping primitively.

As for phone service, mine was in and out. This is rural Mississippi, after all. But when I did have service, Brian was incredibly attentive when I needed to reach him!

      Choctaw Lake

      National Forest lakeside camping

Nice cozy campground on the lake. The campsites are almost all right next to the water, but there isn’t too much tree cover despite very large campsites. This may help a little with increasing breeze since we didn’t have as many bugs as we expected. Yay: Nice little beach for swimming, boating and fishing. All quite clean, water and power at each campsite, great showers. Simple but all you could want.

**Nay: Nice hiking trails around the lake, and other great trails nearby.  **

Surprise:  Saw eagles and some cute little red birds we couldn’t identify :) There is a disc golf course nearby (but we don’t play).

Jeff Busby Campground, Milepost 193.1 — Natchez Trace Parkway

      FREE but....

This Natchez Trace Parkway free campground offers oddly placed paved parking areas, grills, tall fire rings, and picnic tables (most appeared in disrepair). Bathrooms were clean however older and not heated...and no hot water or soap. The parking is pull through but not clearly defined. Grills and tables were randomly placed. The park is rolling hills and drop offs at the curb side of some sites. No electric or water hook ups but there is a single outside faucet at the bathroom for potable water. Large shade trees made for minimal solar power. Honestly I had an eery unsure feeling during my 2 night stay. It appeared like mostly men were staying there and was just an odd placement of sites in general. I suppose it was the undefined site borders. I stayed in a pull through that was the nearest to the restroom. Had I not watched a YouTube video by 2tiredteachers when researching my trip, I would have been very confused on where the site were to even park at. But the highlight was Little Mountain!!

      So beautiful

The view from the back side looking out onto the water at sunset is amazing. Advice: walk the dirt path to the very end and camp there.

    Guide to Kosciusko

Kosciusko, Mississippi sits at an elevation of approximately 440 feet in the central part of the state, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity levels. Camping options in this region range from free National Park Service sites to more developed state parks and privately owned facilities, with most offering basic amenities for tent and RV campers. Water features prominently in the local camping experience with several sites situated on or near lakes and reservoirs.

    What to do

Fishing at multiple locations: Choctaw Lake offers lakeside fishing opportunities with campsites directly adjacent to the water. As reviewer Jonathon B. notes, "Sites 5 and 8 are our favorite. Really, any site on the small lake is great. Almost always one available. Large hands in the smaller lake. I haven't even had a bite in the larger lake."

Hiking trails: The hiking trail around Choctaw Lake provides a scenic walking route suitable for all skill levels. Reviewer Colette H. mentions, "The lake was very pretty and had a wonderful trail around it." This makes for an accessible nature experience where dogs can also be exercised.

Water recreation: Many pet friendly camping sites near Kosciusko offer swimming opportunities. Lake Tiak-O'Khata Campground features a dedicated swimming beach with additional amenities. According to Colette H., "This is a great family spot with a nice swimming beach on a lake with slides and diving boards. Great restaurant as well. Kids will love it!"

Wildlife viewing: The natural areas surrounding Kosciusko provide opportunities to observe native birds and wildlife. One camper at Choctaw Lake reported, "Saw eagles and some cute little red birds we couldn't identify." Bring binoculars for better viewing chances.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention the cleanliness of bathrooms and shower facilities at campgrounds around Kosciusko. At Goshen Springs Campground, reviewers appreciate the well-maintained facilities, with Kathy S. noting, "Nice bathrooms with 4 shower stalls, all with bench and hooks for dry goods."

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer generously sized camping spots. Jody D. says about Goshen Springs, "We stayed in N28 in a 38' gooseneck and the concrete pad was pretty much level. In fact, most sites are really level with minimal effort needed to finish leveling."

Fishing access: Local anglers value the proximity to prime fishing locations. Andy B. shares about Goshen Springs, "Has easy access to the Pearl River and Ross Barnett Reservoir. Plenty of boat parking and nice boat launch."

Quiet atmosphere: Several campers highlight the peaceful setting of camping areas near Kosciusko. At Legion State Park Campground, Cathy C. describes it as a "Very relaxing great set up and very quiet," making it ideal for those seeking tranquility.

    What you should know

Tent pad variations: Some campgrounds near Kosciusko aren't optimized for tent camping. At Choctaw Lake, Gregory H. warns, "Campsites are on top of each other with very little tree cover. Also, tents cannot be set up on grass; only on their 'tent pads' (jagged rocks). I asked the camp host if any sites had actual tent pads instead of rocks and was told no."

Cell service limitations: Mobile phone coverage can be spotty in the region. Nicole D. reports about Choctaw Lake, "Hardly any cell signal with ATT but better than nothing." At Jeff Busby Campground, service varies based on carrier and specific location within the campground.

Site overlap issues: At some campgrounds, particularly free ones, site boundaries may not be clearly defined. Jacqueline A. notes about Jeff Busby Campground, "Paved pull through sites are first come first serve. They seem to over lap and lots of folk share the sites. So you may need to back up to get out, even if it is pull through."

Limited hookups: Many pet-friendly camping areas in Kosciusko, Mississippi offer basic amenities only. Randy C. points out about Jeff Busby, "Clean, we were here Thanksgiving weekend. Loved every minute. Flushing toilets. Free water. NO DUMP SITE."

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming facilities: When camping with children, prioritize campgrounds with dedicated swimming areas. Tiffany C. recommends Choctaw Lake, saying "This campground was amazing. Our site was right off the lake. The scenery was beautiful, it was quiet, the sites are pretty spread out. Camp sites 3-12 is where you want to be. There is a playground for kids, a boat dock if you have one, or you can just fish right off your site."

Activity options: Choose campgrounds with additional recreation for kids. At Vaiden Campground, Paul P. shares, "There is pavilion with corn hole and things for kids. It is nice place."

Bug protection: The high humidity in Mississippi makes insect protection essential, especially at waterfront sites. As Maddox H. explains about Choctaw Lake, "Nighttime can be quite humid and bug ridden but if you're equipped for it i'd say this spot is great for beginners or family trips."

Bathroom proximity: With young children, consider campsite location relative to facilities. Ashley K. mentions about Jeff Busby Campground, "There isn't a lot of space but the bathrooms were decent and they had water spigots and trashcans set up at intervals."

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Many RVers note the importance of level sites in the area. At Reflect, Renew, Resolve, the host helps ensure proper parking, as LaRee S. describes: "Brian met us at the gate, and led us down a perfectly manicured field so that we could park right next to our tent spot!"

Hookup positioning: Some campgrounds have unusual hookup placements. At Vaiden Campground, Paul P. advises, "This is a old KOA so some spots are small. You may need extra sewer or water hose due to hookups being in front of camper."

Dump station availability: When planning longer stays in the Kosciusko area, note which campgrounds provide dump stations. Randy C. mentions using Choctaw Lake: "This is a great place to dump your tanks. Only one problem and we expect it to be resolved soon. The charge is $5.00 but there is no one to pay!"

Site selection: For RVers seeking privacy, carefully review site descriptions. Johan S. cautions about Goshen Springs: "It wasn't the kind we were looking for though. Stacked sites side by side."
