Best Cabin Camping near Illgen City, MN

Cabin accommodations near Illgen City provide varying levels of amenities and comfort across multiple resorts and campgrounds. Wildhurst Campgrounds and Wildhurst Lodge and Campground in Finland offer cabin rentals with electric hookups and access to shared facilities. Lax Lake Resort in Silver Bay provides cabin options with electric hookups, showers, and toilet facilities. "The cabins were smallish, but comparable to a state park camper cabin, they need updates, paint, roofing, and leveling the floors," noted one guest who stayed at Wildhurst. Lamb's Resort in Schroeder maintains cabin accommodations directly on Lake Superior with full hookups including sewer, water, and electricity.

Rustic and basic cabins dominate the offerings around Illgen City, with most providing essential shelter rather than luxury accommodations. Eighteen Rustic Lake Campground near Isabella offers primitive cabin options without electricity or running water but includes picnic tables and vault toilets nearby. Most cabins require reservations well in advance, especially during summer months from May through October. Pet policies vary by location, with most permitting animals but sometimes requiring additional fees. A visitor mentioned that Lamb's Resort "has a wonderful family atmosphere" and that "the owners were very friendly and worked hard to meet the camping needs of our family."

Most cabin rentals provide beds and basic furniture but require guests to bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, and personal items. Kitchen facilities differ significantly between locations, ranging from simple fire rings with grills to cabins with small refrigerators or microwaves. Wildhurst and Lamb's Resort both offer on-site markets where basic provisions can be purchased. Visitors planning extended stays should bring groceries and supplies from larger towns, as local options are limited to essentials. Firewood is available for purchase at most cabin locations, eliminating the need to transport it from outside areas.

    Silver Rapids Lodge

    Ely, Mn

We stayed here last June with our large family. My bf and I stayed 2 nights in a cabin and tent camped 2 nights on a camp site. This area has great access to many lakes including the BWCA along with being close to Ely for anything you may have forgotten. Silver Rapids Lodge itself has a bar/restaurant right by campground along with many other amenities. Many cabins to choose from from 4-6 ppl all the way up to a 24 person cabin!! Good fishing and lots of areas to do so without a boat, if you don’t have a boat and would like to rent one SRL offers boat rentals. Small swimming area and play place for kids. Pet friendly, clean, and nice hosts.

    Fisherman's Point City Campground

Ranger Review: GRAND TRUNK PARASHEET BEACH BLANKET at Fisherman’s Point Campground Hoyt Lakes, MN

    Campground Review:

****This campground is located on beautiful Whitewater Lake in Hoyt Lakes, MN. The fall colors are absolutely gorgeous right now, and my pictures don’t even come close to doing them justice!! We have lived just 5 miles down the road from this campground for over 20 years, and regret not camping here sooner!! This campground is very family and pet friendly with so many activities to choose from. We spent the bulk of our time hiking the paved trails, and fishing the lake. You can reserve a spot online at http://www.fishermanspointmn.com/ , or it’s a first come first served campground. There were plenty of spots available when we camped there, but recommend reserving during the busy summer months.

There are 93 spacious and wooded sites divided into separate loops. If you are driving a bigger RV or 5th Wheel some corners can be tight, but they are currently upgrading and widening the traffic areas. Some of the campsites are right on the waterfront which was nice for mooring our boat close to us. They have some 50/30/20 amp spots, but none of the spots are a full hook up with dump capabilities. The campground hosts were super friendly and the showerhouses/restrooms were super clean and smelled freshJ There is no bringing in outside wood for campfires, but they have a nice little general store where you can purchase bundles. Each spot comes with a nice picnic table and a fire ring. One of the things we liked most is the shelters and grill pits they have right on the lakeshore. They have 2 separate boat ramp areas so there is no congestion or waiting in line to get in the water, and the fish cleaning house is just a few steps off the boat ramp. Quiet hours are from 11:00pm to 7:00am, but we noticed there is no enforcement of that rule, hence the 4 Star rating.

    Product Review:

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I have the privilege of receiving products to test from time to time. I tested the PARASHEET Beach Blanket from Grand Trunk. https://www.grandtrunk.com/collections/goods-for-the-campsite/products/parasheet-beach-blanket-new-colors Navigating their website is easy and very user friendly!! The thing I appreciated the most is that they are in constant contact with you from the minute you place the order to when it arrives on your doorstep. The shipping time is super speedy from this company!! All items were packed well, and they included a free can cozy and decal sticker (it went on our 5th Wheel!!)

When I took Parasheet, my first thought was that I would not have used the word blanket in the description, it is so much more!! (on their website they use the sentence “The Best Beach Blanket Ever.” With that being said, the parachute nylon fabric is very lightweight, but super durable. This sheet is a packing/carrying dream!! They have a nice variety of colors available, and I ordered the Parasheet in the color Berry Bronzed. The contrast between the deep blue/tan colors is absolutely stunning!! The one feature I liked right away is that the sheet has it’s own drawcorded carrying/storage bag for easy packing and storing. We had a chance to take the sheet out on a windy day, and the sand pockets helped keep it in place while we staked it down. There are an endless amount of uses for this sheet while camping, and at home too!! (my son of course tested and gave a “thumbs up” on the Superman cape tryout lol) The parasheet stood up very well on different types of terrain (we tested sand, gravel rock, and pine needles) Overall, I think the Grand Trunk Parasheet is well priced at $39.99, and would recommend it to all!!

    Wildhurst Campgrounds

    Quiet, convenient, and friendly

A great campsite just a few minutes from the main highway up the coast of lake superior. There's a bar with a kitchen where you check in to the campsite filled with friendly people, games, and great food. But enough about that, the campsite itself is very private with a spot to park you car, and you are surrounded by trees and bushes for each individual campsite. A fire pit and picnic table can be found at each site. There is potable water, showers, and an outhouse. Ice, firewood, and limited camping supplies are available for purchase at the bar.

Apostle Islands Area RV park and Camping

Perfect destination to camp by kayak

We kayaked to many campgrounds and islands in the national lakeshore. paddling a total of 60 miles we were able to make it to 3 different island campgrounds. Bathrooms and picnic tables were at most camp sites, some camp sites were very desolate and rustic. No running water on some islands.

Apostle Islands Area RV park and Camping

Great woodsy location close to town

Loved this location. 1.5 miles out of Bayfield, yet great outdoorsy feel with decent privacy. Can bike to the brewery or wineries and bike to town. Common area great for corn hole and a meager playground for the kids. Also super close to the gourmet garage bakery. Yum.

Sawbill Lake Campground - Superior National Forest

On the edge of the wild

No joke, this was our family’s first camping trip. We have five kids 10 and under. The sites were clean and large. Some are larger than others. Ours was about 15 feet from the next site but that was through trees.

Plenty of drinking water and bathrooms. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit with a grate.

The outfitters on site are amazing. Kind and helpful. They have pay showers and all the rentals you need.

We did a day trip and had a blast.

    Hungry Jack Lodge & Campground

    Great retreat on the lake!

We stayed in 2 different cabins. Fox and Beaver. Very nice. Clean. Private. It was quiet. Peaceful. Beautiful views of the lake. The staff was very friendly. The “lodge dog” was friendly too 😊 they have canoe rentals. All the gear. Was a great stay!

Note. There is very limited cell reception here (yay!)

There is WiFi but only near or in the lodge.

The cabins have kitchens and cooking stuff. Some have outdoor grills but not the easiest to use.

The entrances in most of them are not ADA friendly. We didn’t need it. Just note they are on uneven ground.

We visited during COVID. So we brought a lot of our own gear. So not sure what it’s like normally.

We rented a canoe and ventured out onto hungry Jack lake. Sooooo beautiful.

Guide to Illgen City

Cabins near Illgen City, Minnesota provide visitors with rustic getaway options within the Superior National Forest, an area comprising over 3 million acres of wilderness with elevations ranging from 600 to 2,300 feet. The region experiences cold winters with temperatures frequently dropping below 0°F, while summer highs typically reach 70-80°F with occasional heat waves. Most cabin locations connect to hiking trails and waterways, with peak rental season running from late May through early October.

What to do

Kayaking on Lake Superior: Apostle Islands Area offers excellent day-trip options for paddlers wanting to explore sea caves. "Went kayaking out here and the caves are awesome!!!! So much fun and lucked out having a nice still day!!!" notes Jordan L. from Apostle Islands Area RV park and Camping.

Fishing freshwater lakes: Birch Lake provides multiple fishing spots with northern pike catches. "Very nice northern Mn. Campground. Semi primative. Stayed 2 nights and kayaked close to shore out of the wind. Caught a couple of Northerns," shares marty L. from Birch Lake Campground.

Hiking forest trails: Many cabins connect to trails through Superior National Forest. "Hiking trails right out of the campsite," mentions Kara B. about Birch Lake's immediate access to woodland paths. The area features trails ranging from easy 1-mile loops to challenging day hikes with significant elevation changes.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many cabins offer secluded settings with natural barriers. "The sites had good privacy due to the trees, and I managed to set the tent up at the way back of the site, so you couldn't see it from the road," writes DJ about Birch Lake Campground.

Bar and food options: Some facilities feature on-site dining. "There's a bar with a kitchen where you check in to the campsite filled with friendly people, games, and great food," says Evan G. about Wildhurst Campgrounds, noting this amenity operates even during off-season periods.

Lake access: Direct water access ranks high with visitors. At Sawbill Lake Campground, "The lake was beautiful! The trail continued along the shoreline in the wooded area," according to Molly Y., who appreciated the clearly marked paths to reach the water.

What you should know

Varying bathroom facilities: Facilities range from modern to primitive. "The pit toilet was pretty clean and there were even hand sanitizer bottles outside for use," notes DJ about Birch Lake, while other properties offer more substantial facilities.

Water quality concerns: Well water quality varies by location. "The well water available had a bit of an off smell and came out a little more yellow/brown than I prefer so I did not use it," warns DJ about Birch Lake's water supply.

Reservation requirements: Advance planning is essential. "We called around to a few campground, and luckily the owner at Lax Lake Resort said they had a spare tent pad available, not normally reservable," shares Adam T., who noted this was exceptional luck during peak season.

Tips for camping with families

Cabin selection for kids: Choose properties with dedicated play areas. "The playground had enough equipment to keep our children busy with plenty to do while we prepared meals," notes Sheri F. from Lamb's Resort.

Lake activities: Rocky beaches provide natural entertainment. "Our boys, age 5 and 3, spent hours throwing rocks in the lake," shares Sara P. about Lamb's Resort, highlighting simple activities that engage younger children.

Site placement: Request sites away from busy areas for family quiet time. "Tent campers and RVs are separate to minimize noise. Site was private and tucked in the corner," notes Sara P., describing how Lamb's Resort's layout benefits families needing consistent sleep schedules.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Be prepared for uneven terrain. "Not a great campground for kiddos to ride their bikes, and not super fun to walk uphill in every direction," cautions Nick & Allyssa S. about Apostle Islands Area Campground, noting the hillside location creates access issues.

Dump station availability: Not all properties offer full RV services. "Dump station next to the outfitters," notes Tracy O. about Sawbill Lake Campground, highlighting this essential amenity for longer stays.

Site spacing concerns: RV sites vary significantly in privacy. "Sites are hit or miss. Some are spectacular. Some are on top of each other," warns Rachel O. about Sawbill Lake Campground, suggesting careful research before booking specific sites.
